Sunbeamers Reach Bronze Level, "Bid Me" Results

By Bixyl Shuftan

It's been a good week for the Relay for Life in Second Life's Sunbeamer team, the team of the Sunweaver community. Last Friday, March 17, the team reached the 25,000 Linden mark, and "Rising Star" rank. as a result of their "St. Patrick's/Capt'n's Birthday" event.  Since then, the team has continued to get more funds, thanks in part to two "Bid Me" events, a "Bid Me (your choice) by team captain Rita Mariner, and a "Bid Me Human" by Ranchan Weidman. The Wednesday night party at Club Cutlass was the last chance to make donations at the four kiosks for the two events, each woman having a "stay" and a "change."

Finally at 8PM, the totals were made official. Those bidding to have Rita change came out on top, 3222 to 3073, for a total of 5773 Lindens. Ranchan's bidders for human also came out on top, 2551 to 1700, for a total of 4773 Lindens. The combined total of the two events was 10,546 Linden dollars.

So what would Rita be stuck as for a week? There was a comment or two about making her the East Indian human avatar from the 2011 "Bid Me Human" she was in. But instead it was suggested she use an avatar she uses only once in a good while, her custom-made vixen Lotta Lamour, a character from the "Tale Spin" cartoon. Those less than familiar with the cartoon had called it her "harem vixen."

Ranchan, whom has switched around a little from domestic canine to fennec fox, now had a change of her own to make as well. She soon found an anime-influenced human avatar to wear for the following week.

The money from the event put the team over the 50,000 Linden mark. But the cash would continue to roll in.  The following night, Rita would announce the team had passed 75,000, "We are now at Bronze Level!"

Despite that the community already had to raise lots of cash just before the Relay season, the team has been progressing faster than last year. In the 2016 Season, it took until May 19 for the Sunbeamers to reach Bronze rank. But eventually the team would go on to reach Platinum rank. How high can the team go this year? Eventually we'll see.

For those looking to donate to Team Sunbeamers, you can find our kiosks at Club Cutlass in Sunweaver Bay  (114/117/757), the Happy Vixen at Purrfection Estates (236/219/24), and the SL Newser office at HV Community (140/85/25).

The Relay for Life in Second Life is a chapter of  the Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society's most noted fundraiser.

The New Steelhead's First Town Meeting

Steelhead is back. For over a year, the members of the community had to live in other places after the estate faded away from the grid. But with the founding of Steelhead Bay, they now have a home once more. Tuesday night, March 21, was both the opening of the sim to community members and the first town hall meeting since the closing of the old estate.

Reader Submitted: Skunkie Party

Over time, Club Cutlass, the main club of the Sunweaver community, has gone through a number of changes. From about 2009 to Feb 2012, the club was of a Meso-American "pyramid" design. Among the events held was this "skunk party."

Zorro Wuramunga took these two pictures of the event of which the only clue of the time was the background. Then as now, the club has the air of the sweet smell of friendship.

Interview With Dusk Griswold

Dusk Gridwold is one of the key members of the Sunweaver community. As one of the founding members, she has been with them since day one. Before she was in Second Life, she helped get a furry convention, Midwest Furfest, started, and was known there, and a few others, for her puppetering, her most noted character being Vixie the Fox. While she no longer sees a place for herself at furry cons, she remains active inworld, having DJed in the past for the Relay for Life's Passionate Redheads team, as well as being the team leader for a time, and is still helping out with the Relay.

Sunweaver Bay Easter Egg Hunt

Shockwave Yareach is known for building a a number of things in the Sunweaver Estates, including the "Alien Egg Hunt" that's been up a few times at Easter. But this year, "I needed something new and different." So this year, an Easter Egg hunt in the Sunweaver Bay sim, "14 eggs hidden in all the common areas of the entire sim.  Find them all and get a unique relaxation prize. ...  I modded one of my own private relaxation devices into a special prize you cannot get any other way but to find all the eggs."

To play the game, head to The Drunken Parrot pub at  Sunweaver Bay (125, 90. 22). Between the kiosk and a sample Easter basket, there's a chocolate bunny. Touch the bunny for both the instructions and the basket. Wear/add the basket to do the hunt. Touch an egg, and a copy will appear in both your basket and your inventory. There are a total of 14 eggs.

So how hard are the eggs to find? Shockwave answered, "A couple are easy.  Some are devilish (deviled eggs). But nothing is in private areas.  Public area of the sim, but that's a LOT of hiding spaces. You don't have to fly or scubadive."

You'll also find a vendor for a clean brass Edison bulb table lamp where you get the basket. It costs 100 Lindens, the money going to Team Sunbeamers.

So far, after a quick look around the sim, I found one egg. And it's at ... well, you shouldn't have too hard a time finding it. Any 'ol pigeon should be able to see it. Shockwave didn't say how long his hunt would be up, but it should be around at least until Easter, which this year is April 17.

"Brought to you by Shockwave Yareach, Cynthia Farshore, and the Sunbeamers."

Happy egg hunting.

Sunweaver Bay (125, 90. 22)

*Addition* The number of eggs, 14, wasn't originally given. It's since been corrected.

"Spoonful of Sugar" Festival

March 18 was the start of an event called "The 2017 Spoonful of Sugar," a fashion, home and garden, and breedable festival in Second Life. Over the weekend, there were a number of live performances, such as the singer Maximillion Kleene. The next events are on Friday March 24, with Trader Whiplash of T-1 Radiointerviewing people from "Doctors Without Borders," and will go on to Sunday March 26 when there's another break. The final events will be on Friday March 31 and Saturday April 1.

"Spoonful of Sugar" takes place over five sims. Besides live events in the central sim of the same name as the event, there are numerous shops in the four surrounding sims of which goods sold raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders.

"Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. Our actions are guided by medical ethics and the principles of neutrality and impartiality."

Ivory Tower Honors Michael Linden

Avi Arrow alerted the Newser of what was going on over the Natomi sim where the Ivory Tower of Prims is. Over the map was a picture honoring Michael Linden, whom had recently left Linden Lab. What It's Like To Acquire A Sim

The Newser has written about hundreds of locations in Second Life. But the process of getting one, this is something we have yet had to write about, until now. MajikVixen recently opened her new sim, Zamargad. In this article, she chronicles the steps she took from the decision to get one, to the steps of the process, to the party to celebrate it's completion.

Read Majik's article in Extra.

A Busy Weekend

Quite a bit happened this weekend. If one counts Friday, there was the Linden Snowball Fight and the Team Sunbeamers party. But there was the Giant Snail Cross-Sim Race (see below), The VWBPE (Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education) Press Day (picture above), the event itself starting on March 29, the Relay Rockers "Skunk Aid" party, and more.

We've gone into detail about the Sunbeamer party. More on one or more of the others later.

Bay City's Secret Event Revealed: Everfest March 30 - April 1

Recently, E.F. Committee (EFcommittee Resident) of Bay City finally revealed the reason for the secret messages he or she has been sending since just after Mole Day, here, here, and here. The community would be holding a festival to honor a late noted resident; Ever Dreamscape.

"We aimed for mysterious and 'Ever-like,'" E.F. Committee explained to me, "We realized that there were 3 days between the 'Dreamscape 500' on Thursday and Ever's night on Saturday, so decided to make it a festival this year. Three days we think she'd have totally loved. The Bowlathon is for Ever's favorite charity, Child's Play."

For those who don't know, Ever was a noted part of the Bay City community, who helped organize events. But she was also known for her quirky sense of humor. She would set up many kinds of calamities, but was particularly known for setting fires. In early May 2014, she passed away. Shortly afterwards Bay City honored her in an unusual way by setting much of the city aflame.

Of the earlier teaser messages, "We wanted to build 'mystery' but also get people thinking 'WTF?' We'll type up what each image had to do with Ever, including the links."

The event will include, "random sharks, fires, aliens and Godzillas. We did, with love, when Ever was ever around." Of fires, "that's post party on Ever's Night. Dennis will burn, and we hope most of BC will as well with us. ... We are striving for a very.... ForEver event. She was very unique, it's taking a lot of us to try and even come near" her level."

E.F. Committee concluded, "More details are coming, and everyone is invited. We'll send out LM's in the notecard explaining the posters."

And so, Bay City gets ready to honor one of it's more unique residents in a very unique fashion.

(Click here if the video fails to play)

A recording of the Giant Snail Cross-Sim Race that took place on Saturday March 18. 17 racers took part, and the race was unusually tight for a cross-sim race of this length with five crossing the finish line within a couple seconds. They are, in order:

1: Josu Tenk
2: Gunwald Constantine
3: Alden Cortez
4: Imzadi Amaterasu
5: Lorraina McDonnell

Organized by RacerX Gullwing, the race raised a good amount of money for the Relay for Life.

Flonne Ninetails Has Died

Ranchan Weidman, the owner of HV Community where the SL Newser office resides, announced that a friend of hers, Flonne Ninetails, had passed away.

For those that have known Flonne Ninetails, either in passing chats or on more deeper levels; from being friends or family with Flonne, both in Real life and Secondlife, it saddens me to pass along the news that early this march, for those that didn't know yet,  Flonne passed away.  Our hearts and wishes go out to you.  The strength and personality shared by Flonne, even under the medical issues being battled, will forever resonate in our hearts.  May you Rest in Peace, Sis.

Flonne's profile listed her age as 29. Besides Tiny Empires, she was involved in a few sci-fi roleplay groups.

Cartoon of the Day: Canned Linden

Taken at the Linden snowball fight/Snowball showdown. Among the Lindens there was a relatively new one, Mazidox Linden, who went around in a spray can avatar. Actually, how he left his old job is unknown, but when you go about in a can avatar, one "can" expect some kind of ribbing. What "Pesticide Sprayer" means, I can only guess at.

Team Sunbeamers Reach "Rising Star"

Friday March 17 at 6PM SL time was Team Sunbeamer's first event, the "St. Patty's/Capt'n's Birthday" party. The happening took place at Club Cutlass. Besides the usual crowd in the Sunweaver's airship club, there were a number of notable Relayers showing up such as Trader Whiplash, whom was sporting a shaved head from his "Bid Me Bald" event this week, Arizona Balinger, Bain Finch, Panza Elde, Madonna Daehlie, Oldesoul Eldemar, Gem Sunkiller, and others.

As this was partially a St. Patrick's event, just about everyone except the "Pink Wonder" Marusame Ari showed up either wearing a little green or were all green. The latter included birthday girl Rita Mariner, the team captain of the Sunbeamers, whom in real life was feeling "older than dirt," but still able to dance and misbehave.

Despite having to make some donations just before the Relay season to one of the community members in need, the Sunbeamers had reached about 10,000 Lindens in donations thanks in part to two Bid Me events by Rita Mariner and Ranchan Weidman. But thanks to donations from the Sunbeamers' Relay friends, the total shot past 25,000, the level to reach the "Rising Star" rank and past 30,000. As of the writing of this article, the team has so far raised a total of 35,000 Linden dollars.

Beamers!  We made Rising Star Level, after our first event, FRI, at Cutlass.  We went from 10K to over 35K in our kiosks, BID MEs kiosks and Vendor.  I am delighted and so proud of all of you that showed up and helped out.  Plus a good time was had by all, with a wide variety of drinking, celtic, etc music provided by DJ CRIM.  Hope we can keep this up and make Bronze next time.

The "Rising Star" rank is a recent one in the Relay for Life in Second Life, having been created as the levels to reach Bronze, Silver, and Gold have been raised over time as a result of the teams' continual successes in fundraising,  and an intermediate rank was needed so smaller and local teams wouldn't feel discouraged. Ranks beyond Gold, such as Platinum, Jade, Diamond, and Purple have also been established.

With this first event, the Sunbeamers have launched themselves into the Relay. Some other top teams, such as Goreans for Life, Team Strange Journey, and the Second Life Cheerleading Squad are also in the Rising Star rank. Already there is one Jade ranked team: Unmasking a Cure. Several teams that hit Gold and Platinum rank last year have yet to reach Rising Star, but will probably do so very soon.

"Go Sunbeamers! Go Relay!"

*Addition* Ishtarkiss (IshtarAngel Micheline) would later post some pictures of the event on her Flickr page.

CENT Discussion at Ethnographia Island

There was recently a discussion at Ethnographia Island
about the Capable Entrepreneurs Nurturing Talent, or CENT, an organization for the disabled to share or promote ideas. Krijon, aka "Shyla the Super Gecko," hosted the discussion. Since a number of disabled use Second Life to do things, the entrepreneurs among them can use the virtual world as the place to run a business. Deaflegacy was there to report on the event.

Read Deaflegacy's article in Events.

Corrected 6PM SL time, earlier wrong location was given.

Linden Snowball Fight Today

There's no argument that the Lindens do a lot of good, but don't you get the urge sometimes to just throw something at them? Maybe scoop up some snow and pelt them with a few snowballs? Well, today's your chance. From 9AM SL time to 10AM, and again from 1PM SL time to 2PM, Linden Lab will be having one of their snowball fights, or "Snowball Showdown" as they've been calling them lately, with the residents at the Winter Wonderland arena, accessible through Portal Park

Spring Equinox is coming - even if the East Coast of the USA didn’t get the memo - and we can’t properly bid adieu to the chill of the Winter winds without another epic Snowball Fight!

That means it’s time for one last Snowdown Showdown - before the snow melts! Join us this Friday, March 17th from 9:00 to 10:00 AM SLT and 1:00 to 2:00 PM SLT - to enjoy the thrill of the chill and the fun of pummelling one another with tons of virtual snowballs!

Lindens and Residents run amok through the icy castle towers and tunnels, the sky pours snowballs, and the good times roll!

Mark the time and date in your calendars and don’t miss this last chance to enjoy the Snowball Fight Arena before the Winter Wonderland regions come down
The Linden Snowball Fight/Snowball Showdown, has happened about twice a year since December 2015, and no doubt allows for a little fun and/or release of friendly aggression. The teleport to the Winter Wonderland is at the Portal Park area.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Today is Saint Patrick's Day, a holiday not only celebrated in Ireland, but also the United States, Canada, and a number of other countries where numbers of Irish settled. Even countries where Irish came only to visit, such as Russia and Japan, have Saint Patrick's Day parades.

Second Life has a number of Saint Patrick's Day parties today, notably the one at Club Cutlass tonight at Sunweaver Bay (114/117/757) at 6PM SL time. But one location that will be having them all day starting at 8AM SL time is the Blarney Stone Pub in Dublin (82/82/25). The place has been around on the Grid for over ten years, and the sim gets hundreds of visitors this time of year.

Another location to visit is Castle Blarney at Wilde (159/109/33). For more information, check the article written about it in 2012. Or just head there and look around, and perhaps kiss the stone for yourself.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Second Life's Community Platform Is Open (Finally)

After about a month since Linden Lab announced they were moving their forum, blog, and knowledge base to a new server and a new Community Platform, and about a couple weeks since they estimated it would be ready, the Lab announced on Tuesday March 14 that the platform was up and running. Xiola Linden posted the following:

The new Community Platform is finally here! It has taken a bit longer than we anticipated, because we encountered some challenges during this transition that are unique for this community, which unfortunately required more time than we’d initially planned. We want to thank the community for your patience while we ironed out some of the larger issues to get the new platform ready for prime time. We also want to thank you in advance for your continued patience as we continue with some of the polishing work that will come over the next few weeks.

We have a new Community Home Page. From here you can see the latest things happening across the community platform, and click through to your favorite areas. This brings more visibility to areas like the Knowledge Base and Blogs, instead of dropping you directly into the forums. Speaking of the forums - one of the things that we were unfortunately unable to transfer to the new platform was background images on profile pics. If you were using a background image for your profile, you will need to upload a new profile pic. The good news is that uploading a profile image on the new platform is much simpler and more intuitive than before. Just select your profile from under your name, and you can upload an image from there. We will continue to make improvements, but wanted to get the community platform out as soon as possible, so that the Knowledge Base was back online.

Xiola stated there would be a number of other issues that they expected to fix in the coming weeks.

If you come across any bugs that are not listed above, we encourage you to let us know about them through our Jira system here. (NOTE: Please be sure to file with the System type “Website” and related Community sub-category.). While there is still work to be done, we are very excited to unveil the new Community Platform to you.

So it seems the platform is here, but still needs a little work. To see things for yourself, Click Here to check out the Community Platform.

Announcment: Relay for Life Team Sunbeamers St. Patty's/Captain's B-Day Party

For Team Sunbeamer's first event this Friday, it's going to be a double-theme. As it's March 17, we'll be doing a "wearin' o' th' green" with a St. Patrick's Day theme. But wait there's more. In real life, team captain Rita Mariner just had her birthday. So we'll be making it a combination event: a St. Pattys and Birthday party. But the presents go to the Relay. The event takes place at Club Cutlass from 6-8 PM SL time. DJ Crimm will be spinning the tunes. Kiosks will be taking in donations for Team Sunbeamer. Don't forget the kiosks nearby for the two Bid Me events involving Rita Mariner, which ends March 24, and Ranchan Weidman's Bid Me Human.

Friday March 17, 6-8PM, DJ Crim

Crew Meeting

Saturday March 11 was when the crew of the Second Life Newser met for a staff meeting at our office in HV Community to discuss possible events to cover. Those attending were MajikVixen, Gemma Cleanslate, Bixyl Shuftan (myself), Deaflegacy, Mylie Foxclaw, and Grease Coakes

MajikVixen had made another Kittycats pet into an avatar. But what really got everyone's attention was when Gemma got out a large Donald Trump doll and began beating it, "I'm watching the (TV) news."

Guess the President has a way of "Trump-ing" even virtual news.

We have lots of stories planned for you, in addition for the latest news around Second Life. Stay tuned.

MajikVixen's Lesson at Sacred Cauldron

One can do quite a bit on Second Life and the Internet that would be practically impossible, or terribly inconvenient, in real life. This includes bettering oneself through education, including education of religion and spirituality. Besides having it's own sim in Second Life, the Sacred Cauldron Witch School Wiccan Seminary offers a chance of an online education course. MajikVixen took interest, made inquires, and got the impression she was being welcomed in. But as the process went on, she found herself disappointed.

Game Review: Conan Exiles

One of the newer survival games out there that's been getting a little chatter is "Conan Exiles." Many are probably familiar with the title character from the 1982 movie. But there's been a number of games about him and his stories, including an MMO from several years ago. The survival game is a bit glitchy, more than a little buggy, and deals with a subject some will have a problem with: slavery.

Read the review in Other Grids, MMOs, and Games.

SL14B Logo Revealed

On the night of February 22, Doc Gascoigne announced the theme of the SL14B, the Second Life Fourteenth Birthday, in chat: Carnivalesque. A few days ago on the Second Life blog, it became official.

If this is a birthday, then we’re going to have a festival worthy of Second Life®! Strike up the band, toss on your glad rags, and join us at the SL®14B Community Celebration as we hit the carnival.
While much of the interest around virtual reality has shifted to singular experiences, largely fueled by the pursuit of headset-focused content, we want to remind you of the joy of hundreds of people from all over coming together in one place in celebration, and form a carnival-like atmosphere that you simply cannot achieve alone. Let’s challenge all the perceptions, break all the molds, and show everyone that we know how to celebrate.

But what was truly revealed was the logo for the event, designed by Harper Beresford.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Second Life Birthday.

Dolphins were chosen because Farrell Stormcrow's mother, who lost her battle with cancer in November 2015, loved dolphins. Seeing a statue of dolphins reminded him so much of his mother, he knew it was meant to be. What could be more representative of life and hope, than leaping dolphins at play?

1) As the name of the contest suggests, this is about Pictures of Hope. Photos should embrace this concept fully.  We want you to interpret "hope" into a unique photo that you design.

 2) Participants will be asked to photograph a statue. You will be issued a copy of the statue after registration. You may take the photo from any angle and the object may be manipulated in any way to personalize your photo.  While the subject will be the same for every participant, we want it to be unique to you. This is an opportunity to showcase your ability and get your name out there. We offer you a chance to show how good a photographer you can be.

3) You will have until 5pm SLT April 13 to create your work; at that time you will send your finished photograph to Ariel Goldrozen, FULL PERM. We will place them on display, first come first served.

4) With your photo, we are asking you to send a note card explaining how this photo represents Hope to you. It's important that you express to us, how your photo represents inspiring Hope!

TIME FRAME AND CHOOSING THE WINNER:

The contest will open April 16 at 5pm SLT and run until 4pm April 23.

Choosing the winner will be twofold - the combined scores of highest kiosk amount and most votes in a popular vote.

Each photograph will have a kiosk placed next to it for donations.  Each photographer will enter their name on a contest board.  Starting April 16 at 5pm, people can donate to the kiosks of their favorite photographs, AND they may vote for ONE photographer on the contest board.

Each placement will be assigned a point value: for example: 1st place 50 points, 2nd place 45 points, 3rd place 40 points, and 4th place 35 points. etc.  The points will be assigned for both the popular vote and the fund raising portion.  The combined scores will determine the winner.

The winner will be announced at 6pm April 23.

Avination Virtual World Closes

Some sad news for virtual world fans, especially advocates of OpenSim. Avination, which used to be one of the largest alternative worlds to Second Life, has shut down after being offline for months. The company of the same name behind the world went bankrupt on March 7.

According to an article by in Hypergrid Business, Melanie Thielker, the owner of Avination, stated that there was hope that users of the grid could see their builds and inventories again. But since the company behind the grid was bankrupt, all the money was gone. In the comments following the article, Thielker stated, "The grid itself isn't dead. The grid is it's users and it's content, not a name or some servers. We have found a way to be able to offer the Avination experience, just not under that name and not with me as the top dog. Stay tuned, after the weekend there will be some info on the old Avination website address."

A look at the Avination website had no links to other pages. The blog and forum were apparently gone. Just a message stating, "The name Avination is going away. Your avatars and sims will soon be available again. A grid is more than a name. We have realized this and are working to restore what made this grid the fun place it used to be. We are currently in the process of negotiating a merger. Please stay tuned for more information as talks develop."

After Avination went online in 2010, it quickly gained a following of about 9,000 active users a month in April 2011, rising faster than InWorldz, which went online at about the same time, though never did come remotely close to Second Life's numbers. When I visited the world in it's first anniversary celebrations, things were looking well. Inara Pey of Modem World would also write about her experience there, feeling although the place wasn't as well known as InWorldz it showed promise.

But then the grid was hit with severe setbacks. Later in 2011, criminals used stolen credit card numbers to buy up $126,000 USD worth of virtual currency from Avination, which it had to pay back. This would happen again in 2015. Both instances wiped out the savings of the company behind the grid and left it in debt, or "gutted like a fish" as Thielker put it. The number of active accounts would plummet, and the number of sims would drop as well. Also in 2015, Linden Lab's lawyers ordered Avination to stop trading Linden dollars directly for it's own currency. By January 2016, it had only around 1000 active users a month.

Then disaster struck. In the summer of 2016, Avination suffered a "catastrophic data loss" that took the grid offline. Thielker would look for a new hosting provider to house the grid, but never found one. Finally it was decided Avination was just too far gone to save, "We allowed the company to lapse because of the damage to the name Avination."

And so, one of the better known alternatives to Second Life is no more, at least for now. Though even if it does come back, the tiny numbers of "There" are not a good sign for what future Avination might have.

Mauritius in Real Life and Second Life

Yesterday March 12 marked Independence Day for Mauritius Island. American students might recall the place as being the home of the dodo bird, and tourists might have heard of the place for it's beaches. But not many in North America or Europe remember the small country in the Indian Ocean as it seldom makes headline news. As it turns out, Mylie Foxclaw is from Mauritius. Some years ago, she found a Mauritius sim that was for both those residents from the real island, and to inform others that the island is far more than just the home of an extinct bird.

Official Second Life Community Platform Up, But Not Running Well

In mid-February, Linden Lab announced that it was moving it's Community Platform to a new server, and that while there would be no more new forum posts during the move, the old ones would still be readable. The process was expected to be complete by February 27. But it would not be for another week and a half in which the new community page was finally up. However not only were the official forums not updating, they along with the Linden blog were unavailable to view, as was the "Flickr Pic of the Day." In the "Announcements," there was a statement from Xiola Linden.

Currently, we have turned on the Knowledge Base. Blogs and Forums will come soon - but for now those areas are still under construction. We will update as those become available.

As of the writing of this article, the blogs and forums are still unavailable. Clicking on them just brings up an error page stating "our community is still under construction."

The issue has been discussed on one of the more popular alternative Second Life forums: SL Universe. Daniel Voyager guessed it would be another week before everything was ready. One poster commented, "It's annoying it's taking them so long but, when I recall the things that have gone wrong with previous botched attempts to transfer the forums from one format to another, I'm glad they're taking the time to do it properly." A number commented along the lines of "Here we go again."

Stay tuned for further details.

Raglan Map Madness: "Stay Crunchy"

Just when you thought it was safe again to look at the map over Raglan Shire.

From early November to early January, with a respite for Christmas, Raglan Shire, or specifically the Raglan Galaxy sim has been the subject of some pranking/airborne graffiti. Since then, nothing new has been posted about the map until the weekend when Linn Darkwatch posted this picture on Facebook, "Apparently it's Bunneh Butt Friday in Raglan Galaxy," a reference to Raglanders posting pictures of the behinds of rabbits on the community's Facebook page as some kind of inside joke.

Whatever "Stay Crunchy" means hasn't been guessed at. But it seems the Raglan map pranks are back.

*Addition* Linn Darkwatch stated in the comments, "'Stay Crunchy' is a motto of Zayn Till, the Raglan sims' magistrate"

Cartoon of the Day

From the Relay for Life Kickoff. Not sure why this lady has so much eye shadow, though it looks like the results of an old kind of prank.

The Relay For Life Season Kickoff

It's been many months in planning, but once again the official Relay for Life in Second Life fundraising season is under way. This year's theme: "Passport to Hope." On Sunday March 5, the Relayers held their "Kickoff" event, the traditional launch of the Relay season that culminates in July with the Relay Walk, and ends in August. Bixyl Shuftan was there as both the Newser's reporter and a representative of Team Sunbeamers.

Steelhead Updates: Steelhead Bay Under Construction, Team Steelhead "Rising Star" Status

Fuzzball Ortega posted a couple entries on Facebook showing his progress in setting up the Steelhead community's new home. The first showed he had finally gotten the sim, which was a private one just north of Nevermoor, "And when we say Steelhead Bay rose from the depths. Yes, it literally rose from the depths. I accidentally ordered the water sim, and had to terraform it up."

His next update showed a picture, emphasizing the images were "NOT the builds. Those are so 2007. This was the layout of the original Steelhead City sim. I'm using this layout for Steelhead Bay SL (FYI, there's a Steelhead Bay in InWorldz that Thad and Lumi built that I had forgotten about). This layout is flipped from the original layout. Lighthouse Island is to the west this time, originally, the lighthouse was on the eastern part of the sim, town hall will be North, my house is to the Southeast. I'm limiting the common builds at the moment. Lighthouse Island will be the welcome area. Town hall will include the meeting room, marshal's office, and a couple of offices upstairs along with a classroom. Club Gearz will move to Steelhead Bay. There will be a Steelhead Ballroom. And my house. That leaves plenty of places for folks to rent."

And while Steelhead is taking shape, the comunity's Relay for Life team, Team Steelhead, is back in business. After having been in hibernation for a season, they've made a roaring start, already making it to "Rising Star" status, 25,000 Lindens.

Steelhead is making progress in it's comeback. We'll have more updates as they come in.
