Christmas Scenes

Before we close out 2022, Bixyl Shuftan looks back on various events and places he went to over December. This includes a few pictures of a couple events that weren't shown in the paper, but most were of other occasions. So here's a collection of pictures from across the season.

Winter at Astoria

With the Holiday season winding down, Christmas over and New Year's around the corner, Gemma Cleanslate decided to stop at one more winter place to write about before the year's end. Astoria was a little quieter than some she visited as there were no stores. But there was plenty to do from skating, to snowboarding, or just enjoying the scenery and animals. She also took a trip back to the Dickens Project to watch a performance on stage by Virtuoso Performing Arts.

Woman of the Year: Gem Sunkiller

The Newser got a few nominations for Person of the Year. Among them was someone who was part of group of major newsmakers, the Relay for Life.

For over a decade, officially joining in 2012, Gem Sunkiller has been active with the Relay. Originally the founder of Team Shadow, she would go on to be on the committee in a number of positions, as well as organizing numerous multi=team events. One Relayer would say of her, "She has been for lack of a better title Teams Lead for several years. She helps teams on board and show them how to fundraise." She's also been a host on Relay Radio, including during the Relay Weekend, "Her enthusiasm for Relay is evident during her set." For 2023, she is the Relay for Life Lead. She also describes herself as a lover of live music and has photography as a hobby.

"My hope ... beyond the prayer that we are not needed next year because a cure has been found, I hope we Relay the right way, for the right reasons.  It's our desire to help other Relayers reach their goals.  As far as goals, Relay's goal is to finish the fight."

For 2022, Gem Sunkiller is the Second Life Newser's Woman of the Year.

Stay tuned for our runner-up.

Preparing For New Year's Eve

2022 is winding down, and people are getting ready to celebrate. Partially for those who will be at real-life parties, Club Cutlass will be having it's New Year's Eve party a night early, tonight from 6-8 PM.

But on the big night is when the most parties are. Some places with Australian, Asian, and European residents will be celebrating early. At 8PM, the Goblin Cave at Caledon Downs will be where the Caledonians and Sunweavers will be celebrating.

There will be other places as well, such as the Premier Business Center.

One of the last parties, but not least, is the Prim Drop at Bay City's Fairgrounds, starting at 11PM SL time, and climaxing when the big prim starts lowering down the pole at 11:59, touching down when 2023 officially arrives on the Grid.

Have a happy New Year's Eve.

Reader Submitted: "I Brewed It My Way"

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final drop
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full of caffeine
I drank at each and every sim
And more, much more than this
I brewed  it my way........................

SL Fiction: Christmas In The Deathlands

We take a break from the news to bring for your entertainment a piece of Second Life fiction. In the continuing tales of Melvin Cooper, an ex-burglar brought from early 21st Century America to the post-apocalyptic area known as the Deathlands. Christmas Day starts out like many others for our protagonist, hungry with no food. But his luck takes some unusual turns, and eventually gets to show some locals what the Christmas spirit is about.

The Dirty Grind's Final Night

On Wednesday December 21, The Dirty Grind would hold it's final events. About a week earlier, it was announced that the venue would soon be shutting down after over 11 years of operation

Safe Wednesday everyone ♫ With a heavy heart,  The Dirty Grind IAC today hosts its last show; we want to thank anyone who joined us in our journey and we hope we passed onto you some of our passion for the arts in Second Life. Come on over for one last dance, and please keep supporting these hard-working musicians ❤

In the afternoon were three performers: Lluis Indigo, Dee Timeless, and Corwyn Alle. At 6PM, a musical duo familiar to the Newser would play for the crowd, Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe, also known as Effnjay. The audience would make occasional comments, "Frogg's voice is just perfect for this song." Eventually, their set would finish, Jaycatt concluding, "Thanks everyone (smile).  And a special thanks to Ian and Lisa of course, don't you two be strangers!!" Hostess A fiya Grimbaker (asimascott Resident) would say, "Thank you so much EFFINJAY! I LOVED IT!" "Thank you Afiya!" Frogg would respond.

The last singer that night, and the last one for an official Grind event, was Nigel Freeman (Nigelfreeman Resident). Like Effinjay, he had a variety of songs. But the last one was appropriate, "Closing Time."

Closing time, time for you to go out
To the places you will be from
Closing time, this room won't be open
Till your brothers or your sisters come.

So gather up your jackets, move it to the exits
I hope you have found a friend
Closing time, every new beginning
Comes from some other beginning's end, yeah.

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home.

As the song ended, the audience broke out in cheers. But with the applause was sadness, "Going to miss the Dirty Grind." "One of the best sims/venues on the grid." "So many great times here...so many great dances, friends, laughter." "Take the feeling the Grind gave you...use it as inspiration. Make something. Sing something. Play something. Let you imagination run wild." "Send it up for a wonderful venue where lots of memories have been made." "Thank you so much Ian and Lisa!" "Good bye everyone. Love to Ian and Lisa (who I never met) I hope to see you all at other venues around the grid." "Good night everyone. Thank you for all those years Dirty Grind." Elektra Panthar, the Grind's blogger, would say, "Thank you everyone , it's been so wonderful. ... Thank you Thank you Thank you everyone, and Ian Lisa and Afiya"

Then hostess A Fiya spoke up, "I have something to say...: In December 2019 El & brought me in to host here at TDG. I had a lot to learn not having done professional hosting before, El made that easy for me.  Even though this job proved to be THE busiest job I've ever had at times, I fell in love with it and TDG all together.  I have met the nicest people ever here.

"A BIG THANK YOU! to Lisa & Ian & Elektra for all your support and love through the years.  I also thank each & every one who has come here. YOU are as NECESSARY as the GREAT performers that came here.  The Dirty Grind Independent Artist Community will always have a special place in my heart. And only right NOW.....it's just HITTING me. I hush now.

The last word, however, would be Elektra's, on the Grind's blog.

This will be my last post on this blog. It’s been a great experience and a pleasure to work with so many talented people.

Thank you, Ian  and Lisa , for this opportunity and for the many years you spent advocating for the arts in SL and creating this wonderful community.

If you have memories you want to share in form of pictures or posts, please feel free to send them to me ( elektrapanthar@gmail.com ), post them to our Flickr group page or Facebook group – they are most welcome ❤

Stay safe everyone, and take care.

And so, after over a decade of live performances, The Dirty Grind has closed it's doors, becoming a part of Second Life music history.

Here's To You Jessicabelle Dayafter

As thoughts look back over the past year and a half, yours truly thinks about the good times. But, there were also some sad times. Among them was when a longtime friend and virtual neighbor passed away, Jessicabelle Dayafter. She was someone I knew since 2008 and my days at Woodlin, who went on to become a crack combat RP/pilot, as well as someone who frequently appeared in Nydia Tungsten's videos and calendars. In this article, I look back at the times I knew her.

A Sunweaver Christmas Miracle: Fundraisers Save Home From Foreclosure

On Friday December 23, there was a fundraiser event at Club Cutlass. The usual two hour Friday night event was turned into a six-hour marathon as five DJs played music to the crowd. A few days before, Perri Prinz had come forward saying she and her partner Recoyote Mindes were facing a real-life eviction due to their landlord both raising the rate and moving up the date of their next payment from the middle of January just after after Rec's paycheck would come in to the first, and they had exhausted their savings.

Tonight we are having the Battle of the DJ's benefit for Reco and Perri, if you can't make it here, please drop what you can here!  https://paypal.me/RECoyote

The final idea was for a "Battle of the DJs" going from 4 PM SL time to 10 PM, with six tip jars placed just in front of the DJ booth, and the dance poles beside it. Five were for the DJs, the six for Perri Prinz where people could donate to her any time. To avoid taking a cut when buying Linden dollars, there was also the option to donate directly to Rec via Paypal. The five DJs taking part were Alexandra Tymets, Mattie Carlton,  Snowy HunniBunni Lefavre (Skylark Lefavre), Cynthia Farshore, and Perri Prinz herself.

There were a few issues, miscommunications, and snags along the way, which was no surprise as there were just a few days to get everything ready. Paypal itself was also an issue as they had supposedly enacted a rule in which they could heavily fine users for posting "misinformation" online, and hours later revoked it. But with the home of a neighbor at stake, the event went through.

DJ Lexi started things off at 4 PM SL time. Next at 5 PM was DJ Mattie. At 6PM was DJ Snowy, playing at her usual time slot. at 8 PM was DJ Cynthia. And DJ Perri closed things off at 9 PM. The themes for each set were Christmas, or some variation of it such as "Country Christmas" or "Rockin' Christmas." Club owner Rita Maniner would put prizes of 1000L on each of the two boards for each set, one session getting 2000L. But winners would usually donate all or part of their winnings to Perri's jar, as well as the DJs donating what they were tipped.

By 10 PM, a little over 76,000 Lindens had been raised at the Cutlass fundraiser. This was a little more than $300 USD before the Lab would take a cut. By itself, this was less than half of the $860 USD needed. But people also sent in money through Paypal, including one who wished to remain anonymous who told me he sent $500, which Perri confirmed. "Yes we did," Perri answered when asked if enough had been raised, "My poor math skills put the total at $1,435.77." This was much more than what was needed. Perri told me she would likely use the extra money to help with future medical expenses.

Once again the Sunweavers came through, and demonstrated the good that virtual worlds can accomplish.

Addition: Perri won the "Battle of the DJs," followed by Mattie, then Snowy.

Fundrasing Event Tonight at Club Cutass For Recoyote Mindes and Perri Prinz

This week, the Sunweaver community found out two of its residents are in trouble. Recoyote Mindes and Perri Prinz become a real-life couple when they moved in together. But a few days ago they got some very bad news. When Rec made the payment on their mortgage, he was told that the time of payment was being moved from slightly after the middle of the month to the first, and they had just a short amount of time to come up with the money: $860 USD.

We need your help!
Reco and Perri are facing a financial emergency!

Perri Prinz: REC came home from paying the rent saying they are not only raising the rent, but they are insisting he pay on the 1st some the month, when he knows he doesn't get paid till the middle of the month, and we have no savings to come up with an extra month's rent, which is what we need to beat this eviction trap. The rent is $860.

As you can see they need our help ASAP, if you can donate cash GREAT! If not we will be having an event this Friday to help them raise lindens more info on that coming soon!
Please help us perform a Christmas Miracle!

As plans started coming together on what to do, it was decided to hold a fundraiser event at Club Cutlass. Right now, the schedule is for five DJs to perform from 4 to 10 PM. The idea is for people to either donate Linden dollars or make direct donations through Paypal.

If you can spare some money, by all means come by and give a little.

The Big Chill: "Once In A Generation" Winter Storm Rolls Across Much of US, Canada

Millions of Americans and Canadians face being stranded at home and without power as a powerful winter storm, described as "once in a generation" and "bomb cyclone" is making it's way through the countries. In some parts of the country, low temperatures are approaching -30F, -40F, and even in a few places approaching minus fifty degrees fahrenhiet. Storm warnings and severe weather alerts are being issued. Record low temperatures are being set and predicted to be set. Flights are getting cancelled. People in a number of states and provinces are being urged not to travel. It's being called the coldest Christmas in forty years.

For Second Life residents, this means the possibility of power outages, which may be for overnight or days, depending on where they are. For those whose power doesn't get knocked out, plans inworld may be inconvenienced as some of their friends will likely be in the dark and unable to log on. For some, it will be a cold, dark, Christmas.

Stay safe.

Cynthia Farshore's Santa Sleigh Ride

As the days to Christmas wind down, it's time for the Newser to take a look at what's been going on in the community where the main office makes it's home: The Sunweavers. Cynthia Farshore set up a Santa's sleigh ride that takes one around the many sims of the estates. There was a lot of ground to cover.

Filmed in SL Movie "Waarheid" Priemers At Film Threat

Last week on Thursday December 15, the made in Second Life movie (or machinima) "Waarheid" premiered at the "Film Threat" theater. Scheduled to start at 10AM SL time, the 100 second countdown started at 10:30. There were over a hundred people in the sim.

The movie is a dystopian sci-fi tale of which the script was written by Huckleberry Hax, who has also done over a dozen novels and numerous short stories in Second Life, the most noted being "AFK", and also plays the part of the antagonist, Belletristik. Caitlin Tobias is the actress behind the protagonist Erika Janssen/Waarheid. Other roles played include AvaJean Westland, Ylva (Soulfullife ), Boudicca Amat, Lydia Lindemann (Lydiadecremorne), Mich Michabo, and Strawberry Singh (Strawberry Linden). The movie is a sequel to Stomol, Huckleberry's first major SL film, which debuted in July 2020.

The movie starts with Waarheid / Erika trying to track down the location of the man who nearly killed her, recalling what happened to her, losing her arm, and her recovery. But things do not quite go as she planned. She eventually wakes up in what apparently is a very sophisticated virtual reality simulation, placed there by someone who says she wants to help her accomplish her tracking down her attempted killer, but wants her to trust him, which she's reluctant to do.

The movie ended with applause, and afterwards much of the cast and audience went to a club to celebrate at an afterparty, Huckleberry saying at one point, "We have this amazing venue tonight due to the generosity of Amelie (amilee34) and Ylva - please show your appreciation to the venue and DJ."

Yours truly doesn't want to give too much away about the movie, though with her in an ultra-realistic virtual reality simulator comes the question how does she truly know she's out of it (Total Recall anyone?) I was pleased with the ending. A lot of work was done on the movie and it was well-done.

A few days before on December 9, Strawberry would interview Huckleberry, Caitlin, and AvaJean in a Lab Gab episode. Huckleberry would say he didn't plan on doing a sequel to Stomol at first, but hearing what people thought eventually came up with the idea for Waarheid. It was filmed in a number of locations, some of which are no longer around. Huckleberry spoke that he has no plans for a sequel to this, though he won't say "never" either.

Caitlin would also write about the movie in her blog: https://caitlintobias.com/ .

To see the movie, head to Film Threat  (48/126/23). It should be there for a few more weeks. Exactly when the theater's next movie is scheduled to be up is unknown.

RFL Team Sunbeamer Tribute Horse

Penny Shuftan of the Sunweaver community just loves horses. Getting an emerald-green one, she overheard someone comment that one of the Relay for Life's fundraising levels, the one for one million Linden dollars, is Emerald. Since this is the level that's the goal of the Sunny team, the Sunbeamers, she named one horse "One Million Dollars Sunbeamer" in tribute.

Meanwhile, off-season fundraising has been going well for the Sunbeamers. Team captain Rita Mariner told those at a party at Club Cutlass the other day the team had collected almost enough to qualify for Platinum level fundraising for the upcoming season (provided the ranks remain the same). So it should be an interesting Relay season in 2023.

Go Sunbeamers! Go Relay!
