Thirteen Years Ago: The Emeraldgate Scandal

Thirteen years ago, Second Life's most popular then was collapsing, and the one that would replace it would be born as a result of it's demise.  In early and mid 2010, the Emerald third-party viewer had been the most popular one. But in August came a Directed Denial Of Service attack that was caused by computers using the viewer at the time, resulting in what came to be known as the Emeraldgate scandal. It would be thirteen years ago tomorrow, September 1, 2010, in which Team Emerald announced it would soon be folding. Two days later, on September 3, former Emeralgate member Jessica Lyon announced she had formed a new team and had made a new viewer "from the ashes of Emerald," Team Phoenix and it's Phoenix viewer. A few years later, the Phoenix viewer would be retired and replaced by the Firestorm viewer, the team having renamed itself Firestorm as well.

Angels Beach Land Rentals

At the Angels Beach Land Rental Agency, you can find a great new home in Second Life. With many sims to choose from, in the Sunweaver Estates, Hidden Valley, and Purrfection, you can choose from a variety of environments.

We offer places with friendly and interesting neighbors. Some places have a tropical island look, others more temperate. Some of the sims have access to enough water to boat around in. And there are plans later on for an open water sim for even more water activities. The sims are home to a number of quality clubs, such as Cutlass, Zero Gravity, Xanadu, the BBBC, and the Happy Vixen Beach Club. In one sim alone there are two quality clubs that work together so there is no lag from them. There are also some small shopping areas available.

The sims range from Mature to Adult, but the purpose of the adult rating is for a relaxed atmosphere in which couples can relax. The places do not allow for harassment, and while there are vendors that cater to mature tastes they are discreet about it. Spaces available range from small plots to a full homestead that will rent out for only $30,000L's per month. Most of the sims break the parcels down into 512 Sqm parcels and and most have a sliding rent scale, so the more you rent the cheaper it gets. Our prices are VERY competitive here in Second Life.

And if you bring a friend to an Angels Beach area, you get more than just a good neighbor. Anyone that refers a renter to us and they rent land, they will receive 10% of the first months rent. And if someone you know needs help renting out land on his/her sim, bring them to us. Renters who bring in a sim owner needing administration, we will give 10% of our first check.

To learn more, please contact Nydia Tungsten, Brandi Streusel, Jasmine Dawn (Jasmine Knickers), or Matoazma Kazyanenko.

"We pride ourselves on on not just renting land but renting our customers the land you want. We listen to what you tell us on what you are looking for."

Hurricaine Idalia Threatens American Southeast

Just after Hurricane Hilary caused a scare for California, there's another major storm taking aim at Florida, and on course to barrel through Georgia and South & North Carolina: Hurricane Idalia. Projected to strengthen to Category Three before it lands, there's the possibility of it getting still stronger to Cat 4 when it hits the Florida coast this morning. The storm is expected to remain at hurricane strength as it heads through Georgia, and only weakening to tropical storm status in South Carolina, and continue on through southeast North Carolina, being out at sea only very early Friday morning.

People in the path of the storm can expect a strong possibility of electrical, and Internet, outage, and some on the outskirts may experience some interruptions as well. So some of us in Second Life may be offline, or notice some friends who are usually on being off.

Three Underwater Places: Mad Mines, Pacifique, Nightgarden

In the USA and many other places, August can seem like the hottest month of the year. So many of us are looking to cool off a bit. And one place to cool off is in the water. Recently Bixyl Shuftan decided to check out a few underwater areas in Second Life: Mad Mines, Pacifique, and one that was part of a place we looked at before, Nightgarden. So what did he find?

Laura X Release Date Not Announced Yet

Checking in on Bellisseria chat, one question that occasionally came up was about when the new Maitreya avatars were coming out. It was soon brought up by Gemma Cleanslate that there had been no release date given, posting a notice from the Maitreya group about it.

The most common question all day every day is about a release date for Lara X.   We do not post projected release dates. When something is ready, we release it. This means that we do not sit waiting for the date to arrive. When it's done you get it. This also means that we never have to deal with the drama of delaying a release. And we don't have to rush anything to get it good enough for release. This is how we have always done it. Nobody knows a release date.

Gemma would say the notice was sent by Gryphon Ronas, "first notice I have ever gotten in that group."

Cartoon Of The Day: Standing Tall

There's a stereotype about the average SL resident being a seven foot blonde. While not everyone is such, there can be some big height differences between avatars sometimes. But with this lady, maybe there's something under her dress giving her a boost.

From Traci Quandry-Marabana (Traci Quandry), who posted this picture in the Bellisseria group chat. The words on the big balloon are "enjoy every moment," and the two raccoons seem to be doing so by dropping water balloons. Traci would comment the working title was, "you bombed who and what do you mean Xia's home is next? Xia Xevious would respond, "Ooh lovely picture! And don't bomb anything on my roof. I have a live bird flying around, to keep my roof clean (grin)."

Commentary: Is Furry Discrimination Widespread? Probably Not

Recently in the SL Enquirer, there was an article about the discrimination those who prefer furry avatars face, going as far as to call them "the most hated community" in Second Life. There have been tales of discrimination against furs in SL for years. But how much could most expect to encounter? My own personal experience suggests: maybe not too often. So in response, a commentary of my own.

Read the story in People.

The WelcomeHub Bridge

When the WelcomeHub area opened in June, the area was connected to Bellisseria by sims, but traversable only by water or flying. Not long after, someone messaged me there was a bridge connecting them. So I recently went back to take a look.

The bridge, put in place by a few different Moles, isn't a traffic one for cars, but a railroad bridge. It connects to WelcomeHub in the Rubber Ducky sim, passes over All Tuna, and connects to Bellisseria in the Three Sheets sim, where the tracks connect to the rail system.

No new updates on the Ranch sims, yet. But there should be more news about them or somewhere else on Bellisseria. Stay tune for more updates.

The Maui Wildfire Relief Donation Drive

In real-life news, there's been a lot of talk about a devastating fire that hit the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui in Hawaii on the night of August 8. Believed to have started by high winds knocking down power lines, the flames rapidly spread through the town, of which residents had no alerts from it's early warning system, knowing something was wrong only when they saw the flames or heard explosions. The fire spread rapidly, and overtook many before they could get away, some taking refuge in the ocean as buildings on land burned out of control. Out of a population of less than 13,000, over a thousand are missing and over a hundred confirmed dead (AP News article), with a number of survivors having lost most everything.

In Second Life, the response has been a fundraiser event. Called the Maui Wildfire Relief Donation Drive, it began on Saturday August 19, and will go on to Saturday August 26. The event is taking place at Tropical Hideaway.

On August 8, 2023, wildfires fueled by a dry summer and hurricane winds spread across the island of Maui. On August 9, the city of Lahaina fell victim to the flames, leaving residents with no choice but to run into the sea to escape the fire.

With fires still burning in outlying areas, the fight is not over for emergency responders. For the survivors returning to find their lives in ashes, however, a new struggle is only beginning.

Moments like this can leave us feeling helpless, but Second Life is known for its ability to come together in support of those in need. We are asking you to do that again today.

The Maui Wildfire Relief Donation Drive will be held from Saturday, August 19 to Saturday, August 26. This will be a 100% donation event, with ALL proceeds going to Maui Food Bank, a verified organization providing food to the hungry in Maui.

Saturday had an event, with DJ Acacia playing from 9 AM to Noon, and Trickylicks on stage at 12 PM. When I dropped by Just before 1PM, almost 12,000 Lindens had been raised in the two kiosks on stage.

Most of the money coming in is from item kiosks placed in a square pattern in the store area. Unlike some fundraisers, the organizers pledge a hundred percent of all sales are going to charity. The money is going to the Maui Food Bank.

As of Midnight Saturday, over 722,000 Linden dollars had been raised.

For more information, check out the event website on http://mauiwildfirereliefsl.com/

Update: There were two DJs at the club on late Sunday morning. So there may be music events most every day at the fundraiser.

Spark Project's Olympus And Bellissaria's Splash Adventure

Raven Frostwych and her Spark Project recently made a new place in Second Life, Olympus. This location "reaches far back into time to the Greek deities ... of the historical view of what Olympus was visioned in antiquity." Gemma Cleanslate went there to take a look around. But that wasn't the only place she went to. At Bellisseria Fairgrounds, the Splash Adventure water park is back.

"Unscheduled Maintenance" Strikes Wednesday Afternoon, Night

If you had some trouble Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night inworld, from appearing as a cloud to inventory issues. You weren't alone. I saw in several groups inworld saying that they had problems rezzing, finding items in their inventory, seeing others, logging in and staying logged in, and other troubles.  In the Sunweavers community group, it's leader Rita Mariner would post about it, "Technical Issues With SL Tonight."

Seems LL broke SL.  No one can rezz anything.  I have a club of invisible people.  If the issue isn't cleared by start of dance, I will cancel it.

And as it turned out, Linden Lab was doing Unscheduled Maintenance at the time.

We are currently conducting an unscheduled maintenance & investigating an issue impacting logins. You may experience issues logging in or with rezzing items from your inventory during this time. Please monitor this blog for updates.

At 6:32 PM SL time, Linden Lab declared the issue resolved. But that wasn't the end of the troubles. Up to late morning the following day, people would continue to have issues with rezzing and seeing others. Various residents had things to say about it, including Rose Redfoxx (Rose Evans), who sent the Newser one memefied picture (left).

The Firecracker Arcade

For those looking for a little game time, one place you can head to in Second Life is the Firecracker Arcade. Located in Montecito Bay, the venue is owned and run by Mateo Firecaster. While some locations have just a few games, Firecracker has plenty.

The ground floor has some table games, pool, air hockey, and a couple others. There's also skeeball, hoop games, shooting games, and a dancing game. There's also a novelty game "Off With Their Head," and a mechanical bull. Getting on the bull will send you on a wild ride that will usually throw you off after a few seconds.

The bottom floor is the bowling alley, with several bowling lanes. You'll need to click on one to get a bowling ball and attach it to play. There's also a few other games, such as one in which you try to run over as many slimes as you can within a time limit.

The top floor will give those who grew up in the 1980s memories of the video arcade. There's dozens of arcade games there able to be played. Some are actual games that were in the arcade such as Punch Out and Elevator Action. There's also some games from home video systems such as Kid Icarus and Sonic the Hedgehog. And some computer games are represented, such as Wolfenstein 3D and Sim-City.

The Firecracker Arcade is in the north-central part of Montecito Bay, near the Roller Club Disco. Those dropping by the club on Wednesday nights can always go to the arcade for games before or after the tunes.

Reader Submitted: Pony Drivers of SL

Great article on the SL Grid Drive.  Enjoyed reading that.  Here is a recent bit from my drive adventures.  Unfortunately I don't have the photos to back this up. Just for your info.

Typically I do the Grid Drive a little later than the group start on Saturday after the Giant Snail races are done. I do it on my own but I see all sorts of other drivers out then. Some I might pass as I am usually pretty speedy. Others might pass me or I might keep seeing them at the stops along the way.

Most weeks, usually at a stop somewhere along the way I'll find the place will packed with what I call the "My Little Pony gang." Last week I arrived at a little outdoor bar where the Nav HUD said we were to sit. There were only about 3 or 4 seats. The ponies were all hippity-hopping and surrounding me on all sides. Must have been 10 or 15 or more, all madly gesturing funny noises and stuff as we approached the bar. Totally mobbed by ponies. They were taking turns on the seats. I decided just to ground sit amongst them which also triggered the HUD to move to the next part. A hilarious crazy few minutes there.

As I pulled out of the parking lot in my sports car. I noticed a bus pull up and sure enough all the ponies were riding that day on a big charter bus and were all hopping back on as I left.  Heh heh.

So funny, sure brightens your day when you run into something like that.

EOTB: Linden Lab Now Taking Applications For Halloween Shop And Hop

It's August, and already Linden Lab is getting ready for October's spooky season. A few days ago in the official blog, the Lab announced they were taking applications by merchants wanting to take part in the Halloween Shop and Hop. But, there's only a short time for those interested in signing up to do so.

The Halloween season is fast approaching and our annual multi-region inworld shopping event is coming back. If you are a Content Creator, this is your chance to spook up some sales and reach a large audience with your creepiest and coolest creations!

The 2023 Halloween Shop & Hop will open on October 5th, and will run through November 5th. This is your opportunity to bring a ton of new customers to your brand, by offering some of your best items. We are looking for Merchants willing to offer a discount on their items (at least 20% off) and provide a new non-exclusive gift to shoppers.

As stated, sellers will have to offer discounts of at least twenty percent off their items to all customers, regardless of if they're in the merchant's group or not. All items need to be either General Audience or Moderate in Nature, with nothing Adult rated, and politics is to be avoided (no Trump or Biden Halloween masks or anything of the sort). And the store cannot be used to promote items at other locations.

For merchants interested in taking part, click on the link for this Google doc. You will be asked things such as the majority of items you sell and when you last took part in a Shop & Hop event. People have until Sunday August 20 to fill it out. After that, it probably won't be accepted. The Lab reminded applying does not guarantee a spot. The setup period is from September 28 to October 1. The event runs for one month, from Thursday October 5 to Sunday November 5.

"Effinjay" At The Rose Theater

Jaycatt and Frogg have been performing in Second Life for over 18 years, and continue to appear at various venues across the grid.

Drivers of SL

Sometimes when driving, you just want to get where you're going. And sometimes it's the journey itself that's more important, listening to the radio, and taking in the scenery. And on occasion, there's no particular destination, except maybe back home, eventually, the journey made just to see new things and new places. If this is something you like doing, there's a group for you, the "Drivers of SL." The Newser interviewed a few people behind this large group of people here in Second Life.

Last week, Gemma had an article about the Bellisseria Bureau of Bureaucracy, which included an interview with it's founder Boo Rojyo. The writer welcomed her story, "For all our efforts at publicity it was clear to those of us who spent a lot of time talking to visitors at SL20B that there are still many SL residents who don't know who we are and what we do. An article like Gemma's in one of SL's most widely-read newspapers has to be a good thing. Thank you Gemma."
