Cartoon of The Day

Scenes From The SL16B

Late Saturday night, or was it early Sunday morning, DJ Grease was playing to the crowd at the Spin Masters stage at SL16B Beguile (123/5/30). There's been a lot of music, but according to the calendar of events, Sunday will be the last full day for music events. After today, the next events on the schedule are two on Friday, notably a five hour "thank you" party.

But the exhibits should still be up until July 8. And there are plenty to see such as the "Fantasy Faire Litfest/50's Mashup - A Troll in Narnia." This exhibit is a tribute to fantasy stories written and published in the 1950s, such as "The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe," which was published in October 1950. It would be followed by six more books, making up "The Chronicles of Narnia."

The Fairelands are vast, with so much to see! Venture forth with confidence along with the Faire Folk, as they ride out from the LitFest home base daily, exploring a new region each day. Don’t forget to add pencils and paper to your travel bag, as you may feel the urge to write a story for our Tours and Regions Writing Challenge.

A detailed Literary Festival Calendar of Events at the Fantasy Faire website will help you plan your visits and choose your activities. And you can keep the spirit of the Faire alive, even when you have returned home. Fantasy Faire Radio provides you with music, news and other Fantasy Faire information, wherever you are.

And of course there is the last event of the season, the Relay Wrap-Up. The Newser would see some of the teams last events, and of course the Wrap-Up.

Xiola and Strawberry Linden at "Meet The Lindens" Today

"Meet The Lindens" concludes today with two popular women in Linden Lab: Xiola and Strawberry Linden. Xiola as "Lead Community Manager" is behind a number of Linden Lab's announcements, as well as organizing many events in which residents have a chance to interact with the Lindens, such as the Halloween "Creepy Crawl" and snowball fights. Strawberry was one of the most noted fashion bloggers in Second Life, if not the most noted, known as Strawberry Singh, until recently hired by Linden Lab a couple months ago in April.

Meet Lead Community Manager Xiola Linden and Marketing Content Specialist Strawberry Linden at this special event, held June 27 at 2 p.m. (Pacific). Xiola currently handles all things social media and community related for Second Life, while Strawberry strives to create tutorials and imagery that will resonate with not only new Residents, but also the current community.

Book Island SL Newser Location Gets A Makeover

Remember a few days ago when the Newser had to move it's auxiliary office at Book Island? Since then, we've decorated the place a little. Yours truly put up some pictures. But Gemma Cleanslate did most of the work, putting in carpeting, chairs, desks, and flowers. So it's now a place to relax, as well as get the news.

Book Island (225/217/496)

Book Island continues to have events, such as the book reading here hosted by Selina Greene, with manager Otter Xue also there. So if you're an avid book reader, or perhaps want to share a little of something you did recently, join the group and keep an eye out for events.

Press Release: Homes For Our Troops Concert This Weekend

Frets Nirvana and US Military Veterans Group announce 2019’s June benefit for Homes For Our Troops in Second Life!

Frets Nirvana, the premier guitar artist in the virtual world Second Life and the US Military Veterans Group announce the 2019 May benefit in Second Life for the Veterans Support Organization Home For Our Troops.  This week is the one where we celebrate the founding of our country and we will be kicking it off with a benefit for those who have sacrificed the ultimate for our country so this month’s Homes For Our Troops benefit is a special one.

Frets Nirvana states:  “HFOT is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans are multiple amputees, paraplegic, quadriplegic or suffered severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).  Since its inception in 2004, over 90 cents of every dollar spent by Homes for Our Troop has gone to directly support Veterans. DURING THAT TIME HFOT HAS BUILT OVER 274 SPECIALLY ADAPTED HOMES NATIONWIDE FOR WOUNDED VETERANS.”

In 2018 the community in Second Life sent over $13,000 to Homes For Our Troops, thanks to may kind hearts and great Second Life performers.  HFOT built 34 homes for extremely wounded veterans in 2018.  We hope to help them exceed that in 2019!

Moonlight Ducklings, A Daycare In Second Life

You may or may not have heard about SL kids, residents in child avatars whom go about as kids in Second Life. Often, they're part of roleplay families with adopted parents. But what happens when the parents don't have a lot of time? Marcel Mosswood recently interviewed the owner of Moonlight Ducklings Daycare, a place that offers "fun and safety" for the young children of virtual families.

Read Marcel's story in Extra.

Scenes From The SL16B

Quite a lot has been going on at the SL16B. Numerous musicians have been playing, such as Jaycatt and Frogg at the Festival Stage on Sunday June 23. There's a youtube of their performance available (link).

But there were other performers at other stages, such as on Monday June 24, when DJ Lia (Female Winslet) played her music at the Spinmasters Stage.

There were plenty of exhibits to see, such as "Torgon Woodget's Fun Fair Time," with it's roller coaster, made to look like a birthday cake.
https://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL16B%20Enchant/82/93/24/

Besides the resident and group made exhibits, there were examples of upcoming Linden Home varieties. At SL16B Spellbound, there were some campers and trailers up for display.

There's also the "Meet The Lindens" events, such as when Patch Linden appeared on Monday May 24 (video link).

Patch Linden had much to say. Among which, he stated that there would be no new games by Linden Lab soon as the Lindens and Moles had been concentrating on getting the new Linden Homes out, as well as organizing the SL16B. Of the new continent Belliseria, he stated there would soon be railroads and a ferry there, as well as commercial areas. Of the rainbow Magellan statue, he stated that was part of a new "Fairgrounds" area, much like the one at Bay City's North Channel.

Reader Submitted: "Attack of the Giant Woman" At The SL Newser SL16B Exhibit

From Treminari Huet. King Kong may be enormous. But as part of the scale model of the SL Newser's SL16B Exhibit, not so big compared to a regular avatar. So Treminari decided to try and one-up Kong. And then came a girl on a Colossus avatar who could make the "Fifty Foot Woman" look small.

Watch those flag Ma'am ... okay, you can step on the North Korean and Iranian ones.

"Meet The Lindens" Oz and April Linden

"Meet The Lindens" continues today, with Oz and April Linden.

* * * * *

Today, don’t miss a Q&A with Senior Director of SL Engineering Oz Linden and System Engineering Manager April Linden.

ABOUT OZ LINDEN
Senior Director, Second Life Engineering
Prior to joining Second Life, Oz spent many years developing all sorts of networking code -- eventually including contributions to the development of HTTP and from there to open source SIP (voice over IP). Internet Telephony turned into something of a corporate nightmare, so he looked around for something more fun. A friend who was working at the Lab recruited Oz to help with the open source program. Since he had already played a little with Second Life, he thought that it certainly met the "fun" criteria but he had no idea just how much fun. Nine years later, Oz is responsible for Second Life Engineering and having the time of his life. He is proud to be working on a product that means so much to so many people.

ABOUT APRIL LINDEN
Systems Engineering Manager, Operations

Before joining the dark side and going into management, April was an operations engineer herself for over 20 years. It’s the operations team that handles the care and feeding of the computers that power Second Life.
April has been a Resident of Second Life since 2006, and a Linden since 2013. She adores Second Life and the power that it has to change lives by providing people a safe place to explore themselves, and giving them the courage to change their lives in positive ways.

Patch Linen will be at the Auditorium at 2PM. It is recommended to those interested to come early as these events are typically crowded. Keep an eye on the SL16B group for possible live broadcasting of the event.

On Tuesday will be Oz and April Linden. On Wednesday is the CEO of Linden Lab Ebbe Linden. And on Thursday is the last of these events with Xiola and Strawberry Linden. All of these events are scheduled at 2PM as well, and also at the Auditorium.

Eye On The Blog: The #SL16B #SecondLifeChallenge

There's a lot going on at the Second Life Birthday with the music events, the exhibits, the Swaginator hunt, and more. On the official Second Life blog, Linden Lab (via Strawberry and Xiola Linden) was offering one more activity: the "#SL16B #SecondLifeChallenge."

Strawberry Linden and Xiola Linden decided to pose a Second Life Challenge to you - pick up your free party hat at the welcome area and take videos and/or pictures of you and your friends wearing your hats. Share them with us on social using #sl16b and #SecondLifeChallenge - it's that easy!

To take part, one gets the party favor bag in one of the welcome areas, such as the one ar SL16B Pizzazz (129/244/23), and unpack the hat, flag, and lanyard. Then the person takes pictures of themselves and friends in the hats. And finally, the person shares the pictures on social media, and submitting a picture to Second Life's official Flicker page and the Second Life Challenge page, "using the hashtags #SL16B and #SecondLifeChallenge ."

Three SL16B Exhibits

There's so many exhibits at the Second Life Birthday, we can't write about them all. But we can put the spotlight on a few. One is from the Safe Waters Foundation, a community of merfolk and their landwalking friends.

Tell your friends!  There be mermaids, mermen and sea creatures at the celebration event for SL's 16th year of existence (SLBD16)! Do come by to see our booth ... and check out the other displays.  Booth is incredibly well done by JJ Yowahoshi (Miss JJ).  Thanks  to Miss JJ and Celtic Infinity for all their hard work and talent. Hope you have a moment to drop in and admire our outreach to let people know - MER IS AN OPTION.

With the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing next month, it's fitting that there would be a "Back to the Moon" exhibit,  made by both the International Space Museum and National Space Society.

From the era of sock hops and the Space Age, to a possible future a short 16 years from now, the International Spaceflight Museum and the National Space Society invite you “Back to the Moon!” in a tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11.

While getting a man to the Moon became science fact in 1969, in the 50s, it was still very much science-fiction. Part of the exhibit is a nod to how people in the 50s imagined the trip. Another part examines how in the near future we won't be just returning, but making a base there.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL16B%20Astonish/157/99/24

With the Relay for Life in Second Life having just concluded it's fundraising season, it's fans will appreciate it's own exhibit at the Second Life Birthday. This build by Eclair Martinek resembles the inside of a 50s diner.

Since 2007 the American Cancer Society has had a "virtual office" in Second Life. The American Cancer Society provides inworld support groups for cancer Survivors and Caregivers throughout the year at Hope Haven on the American Cancer Society region. Visit the Relay for Life exhibit at SL16B for more information.

Probably the most important development in the 1950s in the fight against cancer was that the link between cigarettes and lung cancer was clearly established in 1950.

RFL Team Sunbeamers Reach Jade

Although the Relay Weekend was two weeks ago, the last really big event of the Relay season, it wasn't the end of the fundraising season. For Team Sunbeamers, the last couple weeks have been a somewhat anxious question of would they reach Jade level, 500,000 Linden dollars this year, or not. The Relay Weekend resulted in enough donations to get them to 400,000 L. One person sent a donation by check to the Relay for Life in the name of the team on June 8 that would have covered the remaining cash to get to the next level. But the person needed to cash it in and give the Sunbeamer's credit was on vacation. So other people from in and out of the team began donating amounts large and small, including one at least 20,000 L. Finally at 6PM SL time, it was revealed the 500,000 Linden mark, and Jade level, was reached.

For the Sunbeamers, it was one of two crowning achievements, the other being it's campsite award, for 2019. Once again, "the little team that could," despite real life throwing two of it's key members curb balls, had come out with what can only be called a successful year. For yours truly, it was owning up to a challenge. I'd told everyone if we reached Jade, I'd be green for a week. And on that night, I was in the green bilby avatar a friend had christened "Bix Bilby," after "Incredible Hulk" actor Bill Bixby.

So what happens next year? Well, we'll see.

Go Sunbeamers! Go Relay!

New Santorini

One group of sims the Newser keeps writing about year after year is Calas Galadhon Park. The sims are always well-designed, and there's something new every few months. Sadly, in the past a few of the sims had to be shut down due to real-life finances. But recently came some good news. One of the lost sims, the Greek-themed New Santorini, is back. Gemma Cleanslate went there to look around.

Behind The Scenes of the Second Life Birthday

As the Relay Weekend fades into Second Life history, attention turns to the next big event: the Second Life Sixteenth Birthday celebration, also known as the SL16B. Behind the scenes, the moles have been busily making the infrastructure, the exhibitors and their crews making the builds, and the volunteers have been training. Gemma Cleanslate, whom is one of the volunteers, had an inside look at things.

Read Gemma's story in Design.

SL16B Opens Today

After months of anticipation and weeks of preparing, the Second Life Sixteenth Birthday celebrations start today. Beginning at 10AM today, the grounds of the SL16B will be open to the public. The official welcome areas are at SL16B Pizzazz (129/244/23) amd at SL16B Impressive (127/7/23), But one can drop in anywhere in the sims

Many of the exhibits are a fun look at the 1950s, the era Linden Lab takes a nod at with the "Sweet Sixteen" theme.

But the 50s weren't all fun and games. "The Forgotten War" exhibit by Prokofy Neva and Henry Hutchence looks at the Korean War, in which over thirty thousand Americans met their end, at SL16B Sparkle (175/112/23).

And among the exhibits there are those by the Second Life Newser. Once again, Silvia Ametza has volunteered her time and talent, and came up with this scale build of the United Nations Headquarters building in New York City. Completed in 1952, it's been the meeting place of the organization that makes up most every nation. Considering Second Life's international userbase, it's a fitting exhibit.
SL16B Sparkle (153/36/24).

To keep up with the goings-on, there is a Calendar of Events.

Have a happy Second Life Birthday.

Mens Health Awareness Expo This Weekend

Cobalt Niles Hoffman (Cobalt Niles), the co-founder and vice-president of the Mu Sigma Nu SL Fraternity whom in March was raising awareness at kidney disease, is behind another health event in Second Life. He recently contacted me about an upcoming event this weekend, the 2019 Men's Health Awareness Expo.

JUNE is Men's Health Month! and in conjunction with many celebrations occurring across the country, our fraternity will
be launching a "2019 MEN'S HEALTH AWARENESS EXPO" in world. (Optional: and on FB) ***The goal of this event will be twofold:

ONE - To display Top Leading Information related to men's health, Its leading causes of death in men, and preventive measures. and,
TWO - To show thats there is a real and dynamic unity among second life men via their Greek organizations, working together in the spirit of true brotherhood.

Colbalt told me that last month, he had been working to being other SL fraternities in the event, through Facebook and inworld, along with fraternity founder Gregorian Lytton and Trini Frequency. There are a number of booths looking at various health issues of men, such as heart disease, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. There was one of an illness that Cobalt felt men should be reminded they can get too: breast cancer. He felt men have a "misconception of ourselves" that this was a problem they didn't have to worry about when the facts were 2000 American men are diagnosed with breast cancer ever year and about a quarter of them die. Cobalt states because men don't check themselves or dismiss signs, they often don't find out until the disease has reached a late stage.

Of their kidney disease awareness event in March, Cobalt says they had raised $1200 US for the US Kidney Foundation. They had also gotten the attention of the Source Awards, whom nominated them for SL Fraternity of the Month for their fundraising work.

The event is scheduled to run from Friday June 21 at 6PM to Sunday June 23. Cobalt was telling me there was a chance it might be opened slightly earlier. But as they were still setting up booths, the area would remain closed to most until Friday.
