RFL Cinco De Mayo Party by Hands Hearts and Hope

 

 

Monday May 5 was an unofficial holiday, Cinco de Mayo. And in Second Life, there was a Cinco de Mayo event by the Relay team "
Hands Hearts and Hope" in the Silver Isles sim.

Come join me for some spicy Kiosk fun!  No, not that kind... the kind that comes with chip n salsa and some guac, and sizzling fajitas, and well... you get it! Let's do a Mexican Hat Dance and toss our change in the Kiosk Fountains!!

 

As mentioned, this was a multi team (or Bring Your Own Kiosk) event. And dropping by, there were people from a few teams, notably Roos With A Dream. Dropping by, there were smiles along with the music from DJ Chevy, along with some tacos, tamales, and tequila to the side. And there were a few jokes as well

While it celebrates a Mexican victory against those who tried to turn it into a colony, the date is celebrated more in the USA than Mexico, notably in pubs and bars.

Weekend in Brief

 

 

 It was quite a weekend. Saturday May the 4rth saw the tenth annual Sunbeamer Air Show for the Relay for Life. Despite schedule problems, organizer Cynthia Farshore managed to get two squadrons to take part and during the music event with DJ Kayla and the Roos, it was announced that the Sunbeamer team had crossed the one million Linden mark.

The Fantasy Faire was still going on (and still has a couple days left), and other Relay events took place as well. No doubt there were some "Star Wars Day" and Cinco de Mayo events as well. Sadly there was also a death reported. Smoke Texan, one of the people behind a large 911 memorial had passed.

Reader Submitted: Cinco De Mayo in Second Life

In the past, Any1 Gynoid had written for the Newser, as well as CNN iReports. While she has left the paper, she occasionally keeps in touch with us. She recently sent us a submission about a party she had went to recently: Cinco De Mayo. While many of us north of the border have "Cinco De Mayo" parties in bars and other places around the fifth of May, just exactly what is the holiday? And as it turns out, the day is also celebrated on the other side of the Atlantic, but for another reason.

"Cinco De Mayo Madness"

Sunday was the 5th of May, or Cinco de Mayo in Mexico and the United States. The event celebrates a victory by the Mexicans in their war against occupation by the French Empire. Oddly enough, the holiday is more popular among Mexican-Americans in the US than most of Mexico. For "gringos," the event is more of an excuse to party.

Besides bars in real life having parties for the holiday, some places in Second Life had them too. DrFran Babcock, Ariel Loonie, and this tiny porcine had a little Cinco De Mayo fun of their own.

"Hats off" to them.

The Passionate Redhead’s Cinco de Mayo Party

On Thursday May 5th, the Passionate Redheads held a dance party in Southern Colorado. As it was the Mexican-American holiday Cinco de Mayo, that was the theme of the party. Beginning at 5PM Second Lite time at the Enchanted Forrest, team officer and DJ Dusk Griswold cranked up the tunes with a selection of mariachi music. There were a few decorations setup, including a band wearing sombreros and a green liquor glass next to limes and a salt shaker.

A number of Redheads showed up, the total number showing up probably close to three dozen. The sim had a diverse crowd too, a mix of furred folk and normal human avs. Builder Lomgren Smalls and club owner Nydia Tungsten were among those attending. Not long after 5, someone else showed up: Daaneth Kivioq. His first event since returning from the hospital, he greeted everyone in voice, and the crowd greeted him warmly with a mix of voice and text, “Welcome back Daan.” He didn’t have a problem reading, as once feared, but couldn’t respond with type of his own.

At one point, Daaneth crashed. He soon got back on, but was ruthed! Going into “Appearance” didn’t help, nor did relogging. Amused, the girls in the crowd began kidding him about his ruth shape with bosom jokes and “boobies!” gestures. Finally, Daan changed to his feline av from the “Bid Me Furry” event a couple years ago. It worked, though changing back to human his skin remained gray for a while. Someone joked it took time for the fur to shed.

During the event, some special news was announced. The total amount of cash raised by the Relay for Life in Second Life since it’s beginning had reached one million US dollars. The news flash was greeted with cheers.

The event officially ended at 7 SL time, and Dusk had to leave. So Nydia invited those remaining to the Little Dove zeppelin club flying over the sim. There, they danced and joked for a while until they had to retire for the night.

Passionate Redheads to Hold Cinco De Mayo Party for RFL

Today at 5 PM SL Time, the Passionate Redheads will be having a party at the Southern Colorado sim. The event will be having a Cinco De Mayo theme.

Dusk Griswold will be the DJ for the event. No word yet on who supplies the beer and drunken animations.

Cinco De Mayo, Spanish for Fifth of May, commemorates the victory of the seemingly outclassed Mexican forces over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5 1862. French Emperor Napoleon the Third had sent the army over in an attempt to establish an Empire in Mexico. The holiday isn’t largely celebrated in Mexico outside Puebla, but is mostly celebrated by Mexican-Americans in the United States.
