"Jamm For Genes" Raises Over Half a Million Lindens

Late Sunday evening at the Vahalla sim, the "Jamm for Genes" reached it's goal. Just after 11PM as musician OhMy Kidd was playing on stage along with Sariane Sands, the total amount raised for the charity for the Children's Medical Research Institute passed the half million Linden mark. The moment was marked with much cheers and applause.

There was also a bit of joking. "I'm sooo tired," Cellandra Zon of The Pocket commented, "and I didn't stay up as much as Bundy did." Bundy Xue of B&Bs just laughed, "Cell, it makes it worth it to go without sleep." The two girls huged one another, Bundy commenting, "Oh emm gee, I am not tired now, I am wide awake."

As the last hour of the fundraiser that had gone on since Friday went on, people were saying goodnight and congratulating one another, "It's been an awesome weekend." "Congratulations to everyone involved." Checking the next day, the total raised was over 530,000 Lindens.

"Thank you for your gene-erous contribution."

"Jamm for Genes" Raises Over 300,000 Lindens

This weekend, the "Jamm for Genes" event raised over 300,000 Lindens. From 10PM Thursday to close to Midnight on Sunday evening, live musicians performed for the Australian charity at three different clubs, one at a time. On late Thursday, "Lacy's Place" in the Sasha sim started the action. Just as the events there began to wind down 22 hours later, at 8PM the musicians at "The Pocket" at Cassandra began playing.

Once owned by Second Life media personality Delinda Dyrssen, the Aussie club "The Pocket" is the most well known of the three clubs. After Delinda's passing, Cellandra Zon took up the reins of running this popular music spot, which normally runs Friday nights and very early Saturday morning.

Getting to the Pocket at around 9AM SL time, the dance floor was packed with about two dozen, including musicians such as Beth Odets and OhMy Kidd. Bundy Xue of B&B was also there. On stage was singer Mash Rhode. The off-duty musicians and others in the audience cheered him on, and donations continued to be dropped into the kiosks.

At one point, he was singing a song that got a few chuckles from the audience, "I'm an apeman, I'm an ape apeman, ooh I'm an apeman." One girl sang along, "You be my Tarzan, I'll be your Jane.
I'll keep you sane and you'll keep me warm. And we'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all."

Others singing at The Pocket included GuitarHero Dougall, Freestar Tammas, NeoMaximus Brandenburg, and more.

After The Pocket's 24 hours were up, the action went to B&B in Utopia and EnGedi at Midnight Saturday night. The tunes continued throughout Sunday morning and afternoon. Getting there Sunday evening just after 7PM, the party was still very much going with Kat Rose playing her guitar. After her was Bo Carter.

With the musician cheered, there was also some joking around, with suggestions that one guy get on the dance pole, and more funnery.

Latte Dagostino, "It's ok to perv for the cause!" Cellandra Zon, "(laughter) Not me!" Bixyl Shuftan, " 'Perv for the cause?' Heh, can I quote you on that for SL Newser? (grin)" Latte Dagostino, "Sure (laughter)." Cellandra Zon, "Nooooo! (laughter) Bixyl, you brat!"

As of just after 9PM SL time, the total amount raised was over 308,000 Lindens. No doubt more was raised in the next few hours, OhMy Kidd scheduled to be the closing act at 11PM SL time. SL Newser had yet to be informed of the final total. But the Jamm for Genes event in Second Life was an undeniable success.

*Correction* Cellandra later told me The Pocket is actually run by OhMy Kidd and Saraine, "I'm just the Events Manager."

Jamm for Genes

From Friday August 6PM SL time to Midnight on Saturday, “The Pocket” club hosted the “Jamm for Jeans” marathon live music event. “Jamm for Genes 2010 at The Pocket!” Delinda Dyrssen, the owner of the Australian club advertised, “Come on down for 30 hours of SL's best musicians and singers all performing for a common cause, Genes! here at The Pocket! ”

"’Jamm for Genes’ is part of the annual ‘Jeans for Genes’ fundraiser for the Children's Medical Research Institute, an Australian charity with global benefits," singer Cellandra Zon explained, “ ‘Jamm for Genes’ is all about live music raising money, for research into cell biology that helps with both prevention and cure of childhood, congenital and genetic diseases.”

The day and a quarter event offered a variety of singers in Second Life. Besides Cellandra Zon, there were Truelie Telling, Lyn Carlberg, OhMy Kidd, and many more. There was also a wide variety of styles. At one point, OhMy played as part of a pop music band, The Kidds. ZeroOne Paz offered more relaxing, ambient, music with his xylophone. Alienspeaking, whom spoke in a voice that sounded like “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” had a strange series of odd tunes that one might describe as an acquired taste. Delinda commented, “Someone in Second Life once told me that a venue cant mix rock and roll next to ambiant or country or whatever ... but you know what, music is music. It’s all good!

On Saturday at 9PM SL time, “Jamm” finally reached the 200,000 Linden mark. The final tally at the end was 241,399 Lindens, with a last second 1000 L donation arriving just in time. Delinda felt the event had the potential to be higher, “definately see the economic impact. Three years ago I did a 36-hour non-stop and by now we had 400,000. That was Unday for thrombosis research. And AngelAid we did two 8 hour days. We hit over 1 million in 16 hours. That was three years ago, though. And this event always falls shortly after Relay for Life, and people are burned out.”

Still, a quarter million Lindens had been raised for genetic research. Another example of Second Life aiding people in real life.
