Novel Writing Discussion at Milk Wood by Huckleberry Hax

 

 

 At 1PM on October 31, there was a discussion about novel writing at the Milk Wood sim. The speaker was Huckleberry Hax, a writer of SL fiction such as the novel "AFK."

ღ Harri ღ (Harriet Gausman): It's National Novel Writing Month again! Prepare yourself for pep talks! If there's one thing aspiring novelists can rely on in the month of November (besides sleep deprivation and bleeding fingertips) it's other writers delivering their 'top tips' for getting 50,000 words written in the space of 30 days.

Huckleberry talked for about an hour, about his various experiences writing. Among his rules was to believe in your novel, talk about it some to others (though don't overdo it), and find some way to keep track of your progress. The event was followed by a small party elsewhere in the sim.

Milk Wood is the location of Camp NaNoWriMo, and supports a number of writing events. November is listed as National Novel Writing Month.

A few days ago, I dropped by a writing class at the Milk Wood sim. The event, a discussion on how to publish, was advertised by the Book Island group.

Not every writer wants to publish, but there are several good options for those who do. Learn how to get your novel or short story collection into print and how to avoid the pitfalls along the path to publication. This workshop is geared for fiction writers but may also be useful to anyone who’s written a memoir or a collection of essays. 

KeyKey Underwood was the host of the event, whom spoke mostly in voice. Among those there was GoSpeed Racer. 

There would be another discussion that day about world building for story writing.

First things first, be sure to check out the main NaNoWriMo site. You can create your account, post information about yourself and your novel, meet other Wrimos and verify your word count once the party gets started on November 1st.

Next, join our special Wrimo group - Milk Wood Wrimos (found in SL search).

Next, grab our 2014 NaNoWriMo gift bag which you'll find next to Nate our friendly NaNoWriMo Officer (will be released on October 25th).

Next, wear our NaNoWriMo Participant Badge (found in the gift bag), activate the group so you are also wearing the group tag, then stand next to Nate (don't worry, he won't bite) and touch his badge (won't work until November 1st, so no cheating), then type in your new word count. Repeat the last step daily.

Please Note: Be sure to remove your 500 Word Snatch titler before you wear your NaNoWriMo badge as the word meter will interfere with it.

A prompt is given and you have fifteen minutes to dash out a paragraph or two using the word (or picture) as inspiration. As well as being useful for sketching out notes and scenes before November, and for kick-starting your writing sessions during the month, they are another fun way to increase your word count. We also offer brief critiques for those attending.

You can use the buzz and excitement of November to work on other writing endeavours, such as poetry, plays, short stories or essays. Write whatever takes your fancy - but try to write something every day.

Press Release: Milk Wood's 3rd Annual March Poetry Fest

We have much pleasure in announcing that this year's poetry fest will take place at Milk Wood Writers' Colony and Showcase from Friday 30th March - Sunday 1st April, 2012.

The poetry fest will embody the edginess and energy that is currently exploding across the Second Life® poetry scene. It provides a 3-day opportunity for some of the best poets to display and perform on one of the first writing sims created in Second Life® - now 5 years old.

How to Get Involved :

There are several ways you can get involved. You can choose to exhibit your work in one of our easels or in the fallen leaf displays (which enable you to exhibit your poetry in simple notecard format).

If you choose the easel route you will be given a special easel with a script that allows several pieces of work to be installed. The viewer simply clicks on the easel and the display automatically changes screen.

In addition to the easel exhibits and fallen leaf displays, we will have readings by popular poets throughout the festival.

We also have a special Book Fayre for artists to display more of their creativity. Be sure to rent asap if you want to take up the offer of our 2 weeks free rent.􀀀. We plan building a stage area for Book Fayre renters to promote their work through readings and our Virtual Book Tours interview.
