SLB Last Pictures: Now It's Over

And so, it's truly over. Yesterday, Thursday July 24, was the last day the sims were up. After 9AM SL time, they were closed to everyone but the Lindens and Moles entering (exhibitors who logged off while in could still log in and walk around a little).

Missy Mole had one last message:

Thank you everyone for being a part of SL22B! The exhibits were amazing! Great job to all involved! We will be closing down general access to the regions by 9am SLT Monday, July 21. If you want to save anything from your exhibit, please pick it up by 9am SLT on Thursday, July 24. After that the regions will be going down for the season. Don't worry though, we will be celebrating SL23B before you know it! Time to start planning next year's exhibit <3

Have a great summer!

And so, the sun sets on another great SLB, with some great exhibits. We'll likely have at least one more article on the exhibits and scenes that we didn't have time to post earlier. As it's the end of our "busy season," we'll likely be doing articles on topics we didn't have time for earlier. But for now, a word of thanks to the exhibitors and assistants, as well as the Moles, for their great builds, and especially to Silvia Ametza for the Newser's (yes, ours didn't have a sign, we were in a bit of a hurry).

See you at next year's SLB, and the next big thing in SL,

Sunset Over Sunweaver Space

Picture from Penny Shuftan, of a sunset in Sunweaver Space, just over the bridge that allows road traffic between islands. The draw distance was short, so there's no view of the island to the west.

The SL20B Sims And Exhibits Come Down

Officially, the Second Life Birthday is over. The official events ended on July 2, and the sims were supposed to close to the general public on Sunday July 16. Monday and Tuesday were supposed to be "takedown days" with access limited to exhibitors, and of course to the Lindens and Moles. Though on Monday I was able to get an alt over.

On Tuesday July 18, just six sims were registering as still on the map, SLB Alluring, Breathtaking, Delightful, Electrify, Incredible, and Triumphant. I never could get to SLB Fantasy, where the Newser's exhibit has been. Later on, Squeaky Mole would say all the sims would be back open to exhibitors for another 48 hours, extending the takedown to Thursday July 20.

Some exhibits in these sims were still up, like that of Caledon's Catgirl Brigade Quest.

Others were gone, no telling if they were taken down Monday or just earlier.

The Second Life Birthday was closed to chat, but there was plenty in the Second Life Birthday Exhibitors group. "It's been a great experience and I learned so much from other more experienced builders, you all have been so nice <3 thank you." "*tear in my eye, waves farewell to my parcel*" "Thanks everyone! It's been fun! See you next year!" "A fabulous SL birthday bash!    Goodbye from the International Spaceflight Museum.  You're all welcome to come see our full exhibits anytime." "Thank you to all the organizers and participants! See you next year."

And so, the sun sets on another Second Life Birthday, this time "the big two-oh." No doubt it will be talked about for a while, and we'll be doing another article or two about it. But the "busy time" for us at the SL Newser that's lasted since late May is coming to a close for us as our focus goes from the Relay Weekend and the SL20B to other events.

It was busy fun, but it's coming time to say goodbye.

Reflections

It hasn't been an easy week for me. Someone I was close to in real life passed away a week ago, which left me pondering much how he meant to me over the years. While the subject of what I write about confused him sometimes, he did appreciate me (and others on the team) writing about the Relay for Life and veterans' charities, as well as 9/11 remembrances.

To those whom were there for me with words of support, or even just listening, thank you.

Back in Ark: Boats In The Sunset

Since last writing about "Ark: Survival Evolved," the survival MMO with dinosaurs, earlier this year, things have continued to move on with the gamers at Nydia Tungsten's server. Eventually, there was a reboot, and we began building all over again. I've been too busy in Second Life lately to describe our adventures, at least so soon after our last time. In short, we started in the southeast and after making rafts made our way to "Herbavore Island" and leveled up in it's relative safety. But a funny thing happened. People found out one could put floors on the rafts and began making boats. These mobile bases became very handy as you could build smelters, smiths, fabricators, etc. on them. One monster ship was a huge "aircraft carrier" many stories high. My own just had a couple storage cabinets.

Eventually, we were looking to make other bases. I made a small base on the island's western peninsula. But a larger one was made further north near the top. Nydia took this screenshot from there.

"I have always enjoyed sunsets, and this is from the balcony of our westridge base built by out tribe's master builder Jaz, you can see our hunting rafts in the protected bay below"

There have been some frustrations of course. One recent update had the "flying nerf" that put big limits on our birds and pterodactyls, and introduced a big fish that would attack boats on sight, smashing them into smithereens. Once that center portion was gone, the rest of even the biggest ships would disintegrate. Needless to say, that made sea travel a lot more complicated. Nydia grumbled this update was the result of the developers giving in to demands by the PvP crowd. And then there's the upcoming update which introduces active volcanoes, and almost certainly wipes out our best source of iron, crystal, and obsidian.

So how will the tribe deal with this new complication? Like with everything else, find a way.
