A Marine's Story (2011)

Memorial Day has many stories. One would first be told one Veterans Day in 2011. At the Second Life Veterans Tribute, Laken Titanium, a US Marine in real-life, was introduced to me. He had a story to tell, not of himself, but rather of a number of his platoon whom sadly never made it home.

Read the story from 2011 in People.

Black Hills National Cemetary Pictures Near Vietnam Wall

The Heavens Sunset sim is noted for it's virtual replica of the Vietnam Wall. But recently Suta Northman whom runs the area had something else to show me. It was a number of photographs on display, under a roof supported by pillars. At the opening were two plaques. One had the Gettysburg Address. The other had the following:

Angel Flights.

In the end .... They gave all.

Black Hills National Cemetary
Spearfish, South Dakota

*********

This is one of many sacred resting places of Angel Flights throughout the world and for our brothers and sisters over the years.

The pictures were of numerous photographs of the cemetery and the nearby Back Hills. Suta would explain some of his family were intered there. Among them was Major Kenneth C Owens, whom had enlisted as a private, got a commission, and worked his way up to Major. He served in Korea and Vietnam. He would also show photos of the nameplaques of two other relatives, Specialist Leroy Boucher and Sergeant Dean Boucher. Both were also veterans of Korea and Vietnam.

The photos are not far from the Native American Veterans Memorial, which itself is close by the Vietnam Wall.

RFL Team Sunbeamers Make Sapphire

 *

Yesterday was the Relay for Life's Team Sunbeamer's "Medieval Fest" event. The event was fun with rides, archery and axe-throwing competitions, a joust competition (Dusk Griswold won), kissing booths, jail and bails, and a performance by "Roos With A Dream's" DJ Kayla. Plenty of cash was raised. But one huge donation sent things over the 750,000 Linden dollar mark, and into Sapphire rank.

As Alison Flow of the 'Roos put it, This event raised over 100k, shared by two teams. That sounds nice. ... the fair raised 107K for Relay for Life." A little over 90,000 Lindens went to the Sunbeamers. The 17,000 Lindens the 'Roos raised pushed them into Diamond level fundraising.

That night, the Sunbeamers would get their Sapphire badge, which was put on display at Cutlass.

As of now, the Sunbeamers are number 12 of 133 teams. The 'Roos are number six. Fifth is One More Light. Fourth is Cure Chasers. Third is The River of Life. Second is Camping For A Cure. And the top team, and only All-Star ranked one, is The Adult Partnership.

Sunbeamers Raise Almost 10K At Happy Vixen

 *

Yesterday's fundraising event for Team Sunbeamers at the Happy Vixen was a success. The small but enthusiastic crowd donated to not just the Sunbeamer kiosk, but also one for Team ACTS whom was also there. They also donated to the kiosk for DJ Mattie's (Mattie Carlton/Mattie Foxglove) "Bid Mattie Pink."

Despite some recent personal tragedy, DJ Mattie performed for the crowd with a set of tunes, such as "We Belong To Each Other" by Garth Brookes, "You've Got To Stand For Something" by Aaron Tippin, Clay Aiken's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Braid My Hair" by Randy Owen, "Angels Among Us," and Zach Sobiech's "Clouds."

And we'll go up, up, up
But I'll fly a little higher
Go up in the clouds because the view's a little nicer
Up Here, My Dear
It won't be long now,
It won't be long now

If only,
I had a little bit more time
If only,
I had a little bit more time with you

By the end of Mattie's two hours, 2737 had been donated to both kiosks, with 2750 Lindens in the "Bid Me" kiosks, for a total of 5487 Linden dollars. But in Scratch Musikatt's set afterwards, with tributes to Memorial Day weekend, people continued to donate to the kiosks. 5150L would be donated, including one 5000L donation! This made for a total that night of 10,637 Linden dollars raised, 9,426L which went to Team Sunbeamers.

The kiosks for "Bid Mattie Pink" will be up at the Happy Vixen until Saturday June 4.

Counting donations from outside Second Life, as of the writing of this article, the Sumbeamers had made 675,552 Linden dollars, and closing in on Sapphire rank fundraising. They have another chance today as the team has it's Medieval Fest in Caledon Downs.

Go Sunbeamers! Go Relay!

RFL Announcement: BYOK Sunbeamer Event With DJ Mattie, Today 4PM

Today, the Relay for Life's team Sunbeamers is hosting a BYOK (Bring Your Own Kiosk) event at the Happy Vixen. The event will be from 4 PM to 6PM SL time. People can request that a kiosk for their Relay team be rezzed, and it will stay there until the end of the event or the last person from the team leaves. The talented DJ Mattie will be playing the tunes. People will also have the chance to "Bid Mattie Pink" or not.

The money raised goes to the Relay for Life, the largest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Strawberry's "Then and Now" Challenge

Earlier this month, Strawberry Linden posted a "Then and Now" challenge on the forums, "May 9th is my Resident avatar's 15th rez day so I thought it would be fun to do the Then and Now Challenge. To do this challenge, pick one of the oldest images of your avatar and do a side-by-side comparison with a recent image of your avatar. "

Some got my attention, such as how Draxtor's had changed over the years.

Panterapolnocy (formerly Chakat Northspring) would comment, "June 2011 vs now, May 2022. In exception of species... not much of a change, to be honest."

DeniseUnicorn Toonie, my neighbor, showed how her avatar had improved over the years.

And then there was Callum Linden, "Let's just call it 'timeless, vintage, immutable' shall we."

The Newser Is In The SL19B

Good news! Despite a glitch concerning our application, the Newser is now among the exhibitors at the Second Life Nineteenth Birthday. So our proverbial hat is in the ring, or rather, our hat on the parcel.

Later on, Silvia will move it for our exhibit. But if we can, there'll be a hat placed on it somewhere.

The exhibit will be at SLB Imagination. So when it opens on Thursday June 16, come on by.

RFL Weekend Track Sims Up

 *

The Relay Weekend is just a few weeks away. And in another sign of the approaching event, the sims of the track are now visible on the map. Counting the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society 2 sims, there are thirty-six in total, in an "H" shaped pattern.

The sims (most of them) are currently visible from the ACS sims, for those who can stretch their draw distance enough. As of now, there isn't much more than the grass and the track on the sims. But this will soon change. Among those with camps is the team of the community the Newser has it's home office in: Team Sunbeamers.

The Relay Weekend is from Saturday June 11 to Sunday June 12.

Stay tuned for more information.

RFL Announcement: More Sunbeamer "Bid Me" Events

Earlier this Relay season, the Sunbeamer team did a few "Bid Me" events, which resulted in two taking on a different look for a week. Once again, the team has a few members putting their looks on the line to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The various "Bid Me" events all involve pairs of kiosks at Club Cutlass. The left ot each pair is the "default" in which those wishing to keep the volunteer as is can donate. The right kiosk is the one for the volunteer's new look. How long the person stays in their new look depends on the change kiosk being higher and how much was donated. Fractions of weeks are rounded down. For instance if someone pledged to stay a new look for every 5000 Lindens donated, and 9999L was donated, he or she would only need to spend one week changed. But one more Linden dollar would make it two weeks.

Team Captain Rita Mariner is offering to go pink bunny with "Bid Rita Pink." This is something of a big deal due to Rita doesn't care too much for the color, as what she spoke about it in the past illustrates:

Sunnies:  I have put myself up for a BID ME,  You can choose to keep me my cute, sweet, white bunny, or turn me into an EBIL, PINK BUNNY!  I dislike pink on me!  So here is your chance at REVENGE!

For every 3000 Linden dollars, rounded down, Rita has to spend a week having a "bubblegum crisis" as a bubblegum pink bunny. Those wanting to keep her white can donate to the left kiosk.

Next to Rita's kiosks are that of Bixyl Shuftan, whom volunteered for "Bid Bixyl Stinker." For every 3000 Linden dollars, rounded down, the normally foxy reporter will have to spend a week as a skunk (unless he's doing an interview or something else obvious for the Newser).

Liska da'Lantros (LiskaDaLantros Resident) is doing the third fundraiser in "Bid Liska Pink." For every 3000 Linden dollars, rounded down, she'll be a pink vixen.

The fourth Bid-Me fundraiser is that of òᴥó Mr.Fox da'Alenfey òᴥó (Spooked Dreamscape). For "Bid Fox Blue," for every 4000 Linden dollars rounded down, he will be in a different avatar.

All four "Bid Me" fundraisers last until Saturday June 4. At 8PM at the end of the party at Cutlass last night, the totals will be calculated and the results final and announced.

Burnal Equinox : Time Travel

This past weekend, Gemma Cleanslate was at the Deep Hole sim for the Burn2 spring event, the Burnal Equinox. The theme this year was "Time Travel." As usual, there were a number of interesting artistic builds. But there were also some talented music performers as well.

SL19B Map Update

Checking the map, the sims for the Second Life Birthday celebration are in two groups. Nine sims, SLB Amaze, SLB Astonish, SLB Astound, SLB Breathtaking, SLB Captivate, SLB Electrify, SLB Enchant, SLB Fantasy, and SLB Imagination are presumably the exhibition build areas. The other fifteen, SLB Awesome, SLB Beguile, SLB Dazzle, SLB Exhilarate, SLB Fascinate, SLB Impressive, SLB Incredible, SLB Magnificent, SLB Mesmirize, SLB Pizzazz, SLB Sparkle, SLB Spectacular, SLB Spellbound, SLB Stunning, and SLB Wonderous are presumably for Linden builds such as the stages and Tower of Time. Presumably a few days before the event opens, the sims will be combined again.

At this time, exhibitors are getting their plots. Some get their replies later than others. For the latter, the Moles are asking for patience, and for applicants to stay calm.

The Second Life Nineteenth Birthday celebrations take place from Thursday June 16 to Tuesday July 5. The theme this year is Steampunk.

The Sci-Fi Con is in town. Taking place between the Fantasy Faire and the Relay Weekend, this fundraising event may not be as popular as the larger events before and after. But there's still some fun to he had there.

The theme this year is "Brave New Future." There are ten sims in total, the entry hub, and areas representing a different aspect of science fiction from Space Westerm to Cyberpunk to Exo-tech, and more.

There are events from DJ music parties, discussions, movie showings, etc. There are also numerous shops, roleplay information areas, and other places. The Relay for Life and the National Space Society also have places here.

Recent Relay For Life Events

There's been much happening with the Relay for Life in the past few days. With the Fantasy Faire and Relaystock over, there were a number of events by the teams. On Thursday May 19 was "Bid the Lindens Bald," taking place at the side of the Relaystock sim next to American Cancer Society. A number of Lindens and Moles, including Patch Linden, were in five teams, each with a kiosk for people to donate to. The team that raised the least would end up losing their hair.

It was a huge part with way over fifty people present, including many of the Lindens and Moles. Team four, consisting of Frosty Linden, Kit Linden, Sequoia Linden, Derrick Linden, Milli Mole, was the one that came up short, and ended up in the barber chairs. A total of 620,682 Lindens was raised.

Saturday May 20 was the Sunbeamer (and Roos) Air Show. Taking place at Farshore Field in Sunlight Bay, as usual Cynthia Farshore outdid herself with displays of WW2 aircraft, numerous carnival rides, had a cannon people could shoot themselves into the air and a parachute to float back down, and a bicycle blimp racetrack that had people going about in three dimensions. There was also a performance by "DJ Kayala and the Kamgaroos" from "Roos With a Dream."

There was also a performance from the Hawks Aerobatic Team, which put on quite a show.

Wildstar Beaumont would take some pictures and post them: (here).

A little more than 10,000 Lindens was raised by Team Sunbeamers that day. The Roos would also make several thousand Lindens.

Later that day from 3-5 PM Was "The Ultimate Hud To Hud Dance Challenge," taking place between the Relay Rockers and "Roos With A Dream." This was a competition decided by donations to the kiosk of each team.

There was some playful trash-talking between the two teams as the competition for Lindens was fairly intense as the two teams were close. But in the end, the Roos pulled out a win. Then the two teams danced together in celebration.

A total of $100,000 LIndens were raised by both teams.

There were other events that weekend by other teams, and there was the Sci-fi con (https://www.scificon.org/) and several more "Bid Me" events by the Sunbeamers at Club Cutlass. More on those later.

Go Relay!

Catching Up On Bellisseria

Gemma Cleanslate is back from her medical leave. On her return, she looks at what's been going on with Bellisseria. Plenty took place that she missed, both events and the addition of new Linden Homes. She took a look around, and wrote a few note about her journey.

Read Gemma's story in Places.

Looking Back: Shellie Sands and Grey Lupindo

As the Second Life Newser approaches it's twelfth anniversary, there is much to look back on. We have reported much on the People, Places, Events, and things across this virtual world over time. And perhaps a little about ourselves. Gemma Cleanslate and Bixyl Shuftan have been here since the beginning. But there were two others at the start who are no longer with us. Shellie Sands was noted for her poetry and love of pet bunnies. Grey Lupindo wrote about various places around Second Life, including her home community of Syzygy. Today, we look at these two founding members of the Newser.

A Short Break From The Cartoons

Usually the Newser has two cartoons a week, a short chuckle for the readers that's sometimes an inside joke only we residents of Second Life can understand, and sometimes most anyone whether in Second Life or not can laugh at. But on occasion, we delay a cartoon, usually if someone passed away or someone close to the Editor is going through tough times.

We've had a few less a couple weeks ago when one of the Sunweavers was going through tragedy. And now, not only is another going through sad times, but someone close to yours truly in real life has not been well lately.

So a short break from the cartoons. Hopefully they'll resume next week, hopefully. For those who miss them, Click Here to look at the list, or Click Here from those recovered (so far) from the old SL Newspaper from 2007-2010.

Bellisseria Newbrooke Area Expansion

With attention on the latest brand of Linden Homes, the Sakura, the Lindens haven't stopped work on the previous ones, the Newbrooke. We last wrote about them a couple months ago when they opened. Taking a look at the map, the area has been expanded (area circled in red on the map).

When work started on most of these homes is unknown, but looking around the majority in the completed areas have yet to be occupied. Some in a belt extending to the west are still marked SSP and still under construction. I found some in the middle still being worked on. I found Abnor Mole, and other Moles, busy at work, laying roads and foundations.

Of the belt of SSP sims, most had one thing in common: railroad tracks.  From SSP Queeg in the east, tracks went from the developed sim of Lavon to the south to SSPPierless, then west , passing a rail station in SSPDrama Llama (bad omen for the rail workers), going all the way to SSPThimble Shoal Farms to the west. The tracks came to a stop only past the edge of the sims, a hint there's expansion to the west planned for the future.

Linking the roads and rail lines in these new sims to that of the Chalet Linden Home sims to the south, I found a couple bridge tunnels. Both start in the Lost Creek sim and are somewhat close to one another. The rail tunnel goes to the track in Lavon. The road tunnel goes to a lane in Muhavara. There may be more tunnels sometime in the future.

With the Second Life Birthday just a month away, it's fair to say the Moles will be quite busy in the month ahead. In the meantime, feel free to drop by and explore.

(Addition, I goofed on the map a little, and moved the red line to cover more sims that weren't around in March)
