Tribute to Wednesday Addams

On Saturday January 28, Lisa Loring, the actress best known for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in "The Addams Family" TV show in the 1960s, had died. On Monday, I saw Gil Otaared going about dressed like her, complete with "Thing" on her shoulder.

"Well, Friday I just had an idea to make a Wednesday avatar," the ringtail told me, "Then right after, Lisa Loring, the actress from the 1960s Addams Family show, died.  So it seemed fitting. Because honestly as sad as it is, it is an extremely Wednesday thing that this happened."

She told me she wouldn't mind her picture in the paper, "Make sure you get Thing's good side."

Press Release: Mole Day 2023, February 5

"MOLE DAY" TO BE OBSERVED 5 FEBRUARY. ALL INVITED

Event honors the many works of the Linden Department of Public Works throughout the years.

BAY CITY, SL (16th January, 2023) -  Bay City will once again come together to salute the hardy Moles of the Linden Department of Public Works in with celebration held in the Bay City Fairgrounds.

Initially honored in 2010 by Residents of Bay City, Mole Day is set aside to show appreciation for The Moles and their many contributions to Bay City and the rest of the Second Life® Grid. Residents of all Second Life communities are encouraged to attend to share their appreciation of the LDPW’s many moles.

Normally held on the same day as Groundhog Day, this year’s annual Mole Day will take place just a couple days later, on the 5th of February. The event will feature a DJed set by GoSpeed of KONA Stream at 11:00 a.m. SLT, followed promptly by a performance by Wolfie Starfire beginning at noon..

For point of reference, “Moles" are members of The Linden Department of Public Works (LDPW). The LDPW is a program focused on improvements related to the experience of living on, or visiting the Linden Mainland. The LDPW is a team of Resident builders, scriptwriters, and others to create new content on Linden Lab's behalf and to the benefit of all. These Residents all have Second Life accounts with the last name “Mole.”

Moles build the infrastructure of Second Life: the public roads and railways, items in our coastal waterways and protected lands, and even larger scale projects like the Linden Homes regions, premium content and experiences, and much more.

Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab® and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest group for Residents of Bay City.

Ten Years Ago: The End of "Fluffee"

It was ten years ago, January 30 2013, that a certain character popular in early 2010s Second Life media gave his farewell. Pooky Amsterdam and Draxtor Despress would release the last of their "Flufee on a Meshion" videos

The series, which started in September 7 2011, was a hit. But there was a not so slight problem, pointed out in both the final video, and spelled out by Draxtor in his 2021 interview. Someone else owned the rights to Flufee, and they eventually had different ideas where to take him. So Draxtor and Pooky eventually decided to end the series.

Cartoon of The Day: Prison Jumpsuit For Eggs

Taken at Club Cutlass' "Crime and Punishment" event. Lately even with inflation in mind, egg prices have gotten outrageously high. There's even reports of them being smuggled across the Canadian border. So it looks like people could soon very well end up in the "big house" for mishandling them.

Announcement: Space Remembrance Day, Monday Jan. 30

Join the National Space Society in SL at 3 pm SL time on Mon., 30 Jan., as we remember those lost to making real our dreams of space.  We will discuss space disasters, space risks, and how these affect the future of space exploration and development.

The three American space tragedies which roughly define this observance are the Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia missions. NASA sets their date of observance inconsistently, based on scheduling and other considerations at the time, and different NASA Centers may hold events on different days. This is not publicly announced very far in advance, so we set our own date. NSS in SL considers that this is likely to be an important annual observance for future space settlers, and that they will want consistency (and a three day weekend!), so we have instituted the "Space Remembrance Monday Holiday Bill" and hold our observance on the final Monday of January.

Bonniebots and The Debate About Them

In the past few days, a new controversy has come up in the Second Life forums: the Bonniebots. Some say they provide a useful service. Others call them a privacy threat and a violation of the Terms of Service. The topic was a hot one in the Second Life forums with four threads on the topic shut down by the Lindens. In the last one, Patch Linden stated they would soon be meeting up with the bots' team.

And so is the Animal Crossing sim at Retroville. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Retroville/110/190/32

Reader Submitted Picture: Light in The Darkness

From Kazaron Klata. So what's with this black fox in a dark home at night, with only a single candle-like small electric lamp providing a little light to the place? He would say, "It was just a scene I kind of made at home. I thought it looked neat."

It does look poetic, as if someone wanted to light a candle for a late friend, but finding this lamp first, which worked just as well.

Cartoon of the Day: Squishy Name

Taken at Kitticats. I was getting some cat food for a friend, and TPing in almost landed on this lady. That wasn't quite the answer she gave me, but having almost landed on her, I could think of another reason for the name.

News and Commentary: Logins Slightly Down, Sim Numbers Slightly Up Over 2022

During the Coronaviris/Covid-19 Pandemic, the number of people using Second Life rose. Linden Lab stated in April 2020 that signups had gone up sixty percent since it started. In June 2020, CEO Ebbe Altberg stated the number of active users, those who were logging in at least once a month, had gone up to 900,000, a one-eighth of an increase over the previous year.

Since then, the Lab has been quiet on just how many are coming in and staying in. There has been some speculation that with the Pandemic over, people have been leaving once more. In an article by Daniel Voyager, he stated that the daily peak has gone down slightly, from 55,000 about a year ago to about 48 to 53,000 this month. Checking the Second Life Grid Survey, this was the case.

So it seems some people are leaving, though it appears to be a smaller number than those who joined during the Pandemic. Some who came back are sticking around, at least for now.

Of the number of sims, things looked more encouraging according to Daniel. With the growth of Belisseria, it should be no surprise to most that the total number of sims has continued to go up. He reported the total number at 27,659. This is an increase of over 2000 from two years ago. What will surprise some is that the majority of these, at least from two years ago, were private sims, from 17,024 to 18,370. But it should be noted almost all this increase was in 2021. The number of private sims didn't change much in just 2022, an overall increase of thirty-eight. But the number of Linden-owned sims grew at almost the same number, 378 more in 2021 and 380 more in 2022.

So the number of private sims is still growing, but it appears economic troubles such as inflation causing the prices of everything from food and energy to rise and cut back on the amount of cash available for entertainment is resulting in fewer people getting new ones.

So what do things have in store over the course of 2023? Difficult to say. If inflation drops and the global economy avoids a recession, we may see a few more people logging in and more people getting private sims. But if we end up with 1979-1980 style "stagflation," the news over the next several months may have some sim closings.

Magican Productions and Twilight Imaginarium

At the corner of Montecito Bay is a store where you can find a number of avatars, avatar mods, parts, clothes, and other goods: Magican Productions and Twilight Imaginarium, by Becky Nosferatu and Moni Vyle (Tatteredwilite).

The first floor is for Magican Productions. Upon entering, to the left are a number of mods. This includes Becky's prize product, the Speckled Dragon mod. You can get one of several colors, or a fatback with all of them. There are other mods suchas the Rainbow Crux. For those on a budget, in the back to the left are some freebie avatars. To the back on the right are some discounted avatars at a fraction of their original price, such as the batlike Bloodkin. On the right wall are various parts, tails, hands, legs (too bad you can't send them to Horizons_ and more. There are also a few clothes available for sale, such as Disability Motivators shirts. You can also get a free cup of cider or one of a few other drinks.

The second floor is for the products of Twilight Imaginarium. Currently all of it's products available at the store are on just one wall, various avatar mods such as the Metal Panda and the Generic Goat Demon. It seems the floor is a work in progress as the paint in the place is still wet. There's also some odd card came in progress in the middle of the floor with some chalk lines and circles drawn underneath.

Don't forget to explore around while you're there as this is picturesque Montecito Bay with it's futuristic design and neon lights. For instance the nearby WCRX radio station is there.

Year of The Rabbit

Sunday January 22 was the start of the Chinese New Year, the "Year of the Rabbit."

So to all you Mandrin speakers out there, have a "hoppy" new year.

2024 is considered a "water" rabbit in the Chinese zodiac. So I imagine Chinese-Americans are hoping this year won't be "all wet."

Reactions to Palomma Casanova's Passing

After the announcement that Palomma Cassanova, the owner of the Free Dove store, had died, there have been a number of reactions from Second Life residents. In Belliseria chat, there were many. "Oh so sad Palomma has been a help to all new peeps in SL for a very long time." "I was searching YT for a nice video about Free Dove and can't really find anything which is just "about" however the amount of users who have referenced Free Dove in their search terms of their sales videos is pretty amazing. Here is the oldest referenced one I found. Wow have times changed in SL's world of freebies and dollarbies. https://youtu.be/BXlHfTyti9A 8 years ago. ..." "She started her place back in 2006, thousands of people have benefited from it. Great freebies, sandbox, and you could set home there. Not a house, just 'Set home' there. The group has 150K members, plus all the ones that didn't keep it." "Yes I used to help at a place for new members years ago and we sent everyone there and often teleported them directly to Free Dove. I was often thanked by new members for showing it to them. Last time I was there was for the kittycats hunt." "The Free Dove has some of the best freebies in the grid.  I go there every few months and always recommend it to people. They also have some great hunts." "She was trying to improve the quality of freebies as back then it was hard to find good quality and original from a creator." "Very much so and they were all over the grid in the mainstores so it helped explore.♥" "She'll be missed for sure by many and I hope they do a nice memorial for her. Apparently she did not want Free Dove to continue without her."

There would be a thread in the forums for Palomma's passing, "I was sad to hear today that Palomma Casanova of the Free Dove has passed.  I'm very sad, but she is beyond suffering now, which is a blessing, as was counting her a friend throughout my time here.  Her hard work and generosity were remarkable, and SL will be the poorer without her"Patch Linden would post a comment on page 2, "I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Palomma Casanova.  My first reaction was to think through how to save the legacy she left behind, however this does seem to be in conflict with her wishes.  We will do whatever is respectfully necessary to move forward and offer any assistance where we can." Anne Brightstar would then suggest saving Palomma's Sunflower Park, at Epilais (230/197/100), "I do not think that in any way conflicts with Palomma's wishes to shut Free Dove, and it already has a touching memorial to her sister." Patch seemed to agree, "I would be absolutely supportive of that and I will explore if there is a way to preserve it and a memorial for her."

Someone in Bellisseria chat would point out this youtube made of the Free Dove some months ago.

This youtube was made just a few days ago to honor Palomma and her store.

Considering the reaction from her fans, it's fair to say Palomma will be remembered for a long time to come.

Update on Mieville

Yesterday in the Mieville group posts, I noticed one "Regarding Mieville Rentals in Mieville Regions," in which "The rental situation is being resolved in a new way," I noticed the following sentence, "Linden Labs is in direct contact with us." Noticing that Wyv the FloxMonster™ (Wyvern Dryke), I asked if they were stepping in to help. Wyyvie wasn't sure as the talks were still ongoing. Annakari Dragonsworn (Annakari Genesis) did say, "Yes we are working closely with them to organize a plan for in case Perryn is unable to return to us. We are also gathering any information for possible transfers and have been guaranteed ample time to remove items from regions if there is no one able to have them transferred.  However, at this time, there is no reason to do anything except to plan."

Wyvie has gotten his own sim, Flox, where "Haunted Nawlins" can be found, and was told others in the community either have or are planning to get more sims. Exactly what will happen to the community lands is still up in the air. But it's fair to say they'll continue to have a place, or places, to call home.

Stay tuned for more details,

Plane Wreck in Bellisseria

Picture from Larree Quixote. Not long after the "Chicken incident," Larree announced in Bellisseria chat, "Uh oh. There has been a terrible accident!" Then he posted this picture, that of a still-smoking plane that had smashed into a house-turned-club. There were soon other comments, "I didn't do it." "Not me either *sips her coffee casually*" "Just get out of the Larree! Ya saw nothing!!" "Looks like my flying, but it wasn't me, today." "Flying into a house like yours. Just not today!" "Think of it as.. an attic conversion (grin)." "I mean ... ya drive a plane into a house and it's for sure going to be an open floor plan hey? (grin)" "Belli Homes .. now featuring unique skylights!" "I take requests if anyone wants that new skylight, but best warn your neighbours in case I get the wrong street."

I never did get the location of the "Launch Pad" pilot.

Owner of Free Dove Store, Palomma Casanova, Has Died

Sad news for fans of the Free Dove store. It's founder and owner, Palomma Casanova, has passed away. Dolleen McMillan, one of the store team, posted the following:

It is with great sadness and pain that I have to announce you that Palomma Casanova left us on Saturday January 14 after a long illness. This is a shock to me and a huge loss. She fought her illness with all the energy she had and endured the pain very bravely. Her passion for her work and for helping others was admirable.

Of the store's future, Dolleen explained it will be closing.

When the subject of her eventual departure was brought up, Palomma's response was that Free Dove would POOOOF when it was over for her. Free Dove was her baby, the vehicle that allowed her to express her love of people and her willingness to help them, but she didn't want it to outlive her. She had created Free Dove in 2006 and when she left, her group had reached nearly 150,000 members, a rare achievement. We will remember her as the generous woman who dedicated 17 years of her life to SL citizens.

I have no idea when Free Dove will disappear. In the meantime, I have blocked all payment boxes for Free Dove shops, I am unable to refund your last payments, but your shops can remain in place until the end comes.

Dropping by the store in Gallii on the mainland, the place was full of shoppers. At first the sim was full, so I had to wait to get in. As the day went on, there would be more post in the group, paying tribute to Palomma.

Fowl Times at Lighthorse, Bellisseria

One never knows just quite will happen in Bellisseria next. The other day in Bellisseria chat, someone asked, "Has anyone seen the big rooster at Lighthorse?" "It's funny." "It is a damn yuge™ rooster, it YUGE™! I feel I wanna ride it." "Oooooh what a lovely covenant violation! (big grin)" "Chicken nuggets."

Curious, I sent my alt Rezz to Lighthorse and looked around. On the map, there was a brown oval, and I eventually saw it, an enormous rooster on somebody's roof.  It towered over me, bigger than the house it was on.

The comments in Bellisseria chat continued, "*wakes up to chat about 20 meter rooster*" "Turn it into chicken soup, with dumplings." "Man you know how many chicken nuggies we could make that thing into?" "Rude, now I want chicken soup." "Maybe the over size poultry is the owner comment on the neighbourhood?"

No word on if this was part of some B-rated machinima "Attack of The Fifty Foot Rooster," a publicity stunt by an upcoming "Bellisseria Fried Chicken," or simply someone's attempt at fowl humor.

A place filled with whimsy, where flowers tower over you. A place of wonder where gravity may (or may not) not exist. A place of mystery where... Well, that's for YOU to discover!

Leave your world at the door, and enter ours...

Winter Days

Christmas and New Year's are over. But winter still rages on, and so does Gemma Cleanslate's search for areas in theme for the season. Among the places she came across was Winter Days. There's plenty to do from skating to snowmobiles, and just taking in the winter scenery. For those who want to take a break from the cold, there's an open house where one can warm up with a warm meal and there's art gallery to see.

Gofundme for Becky Nosferatu

Becky Nosterfau, one of Montecito Bay's content creators, has fallen into hard times. She explained the situation in a Gofundme for the situation.

So long story short, my disability was up for review and due to the Post Office not delivering my paperwork, I lost my disability. I've filed for a reclaim, but I have no fucking idea if they're going to give it back to me. I had to file 4 different forms and mail them in.

My case worker lost it last week, so I had to fax it in this time. This situation took 3 months to even get this far, because every time I called Social Security, they kept jerking me around, giving me wrong advice, and/or didn't know what to do properly to help me. My disability officially ended in December. (No one in my family got Christmas presents from me this year because of it, including my 15-year-old child.)

Becky had some good news. Not long after the Gofundme went up, some generous people donated the initial $500. But she was hoping to get a little more, "Hopefully I can get a bit more. I lowballed as much as possible, cause I didn't want to seem greedy."

For those wishing to donate, once again, the gofundme is here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/need-help-disability-cut-me-off?

Cartoon of the Day: Fowl Humor

Taken at Sunweaver Space. Kazaron was wondering what kind of cartoon I could get from his chicken. The problem with poultry humor is that it may be "fowl."

SL Enquirer Editor Involved in "Karen" Incident

Note: Comedy article, it didn't really happen.

Lanai Jarrico, the editor of the Second Life Enquirer, can't seem to enjoy a simple coffee in peace these days.

The editor of the publication had supposedly gone into a Starbucks when she was harassed by a "Karen Smithstofferson" who proceeded to accuse her of shoving her and began verbally badgering her, calling her a bad journalist, making a 911 call and complaining to the police she'd been assaulted. Lanai got her coffee and left, but the indignant woman continued to hassle her. Finally the editor whacked her with a rolled up newspaper (presumably hers), fed up with her personal space getting constantly invaded. The verbal assaulter fell onto the sidewalk, dazed.

Police arrived finding Lanai and a third woman giving first aid to Karen, who then proceeded to accuse the editor of assaulting her with a baseball bat. After talking to other witnesses, the policeman told Karen he was letting Lanai go with a warning, then proceeded to arrest the whacked woman for dialing 911 for a non-emergency. Then Enquirer would report someone at Starbucks would give Lanai a lifetime supply of virtual coffee for doing something about "the rash of Karenism spreading like wildfire across various Starbucks, Walmarts, Costco, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Walgreens, Taco Bells, Hobby Lobby, and numerous Hair and Nails Salons."

Cutlass Hospital Ship

It's been, interesting times, for the Sunweaver community. A few days ago, community leader Rita Mariner came back home from the hospital after a precautionary check in some days earlier due to an infection on her leg. She's been far from the only Sunny in not so sunny times. A week and a half ago, Zorro Wuramunga was checked in the hospital, and a few weeks ago so was Valkyrie Ice. Others such as Penny Shuftan, Snowbuns Lefavre, and Mattie Carlton have also not been feeling well lately.

Shockwave Yareach mused that the way things were going, Club Cutlass would soon need it's own Intensive Care Unit. So when he DJed on Friday the 13th at Cutlass, the club sported the red cross symbol on the sides, there was a heart monitor near the DJ booth, and the dance poles had IV bags. He commented with his luck, he'd be the one in the hospital next. Rita, who was there, had a chuckle over the dark humor. There was no comment from Zorro, who was also there.

SL Video: "The Return Of The Great Tuna"

From Trytofight on November 12, 2022, "Welcome to the return one of the grooviest, most peaceful spaces anywhere. Utter calm and sometimes the most intense freneticism somehow merge, or melt, or even explode. Be brave and embrace what was once and will always be... the Odd Ball !"

The Newser's New Year's Party

About twice a year, the Newser crew takes a short break from covering the news and has a little party for itself and it's fans. So a few days ago, they gathered on top of the office at HV Community for a little music and dance. A number of people showed up, and some pictures were taken.

See the pictures in Events.

Happy Friday The 13th

It's Friday the 13th, the "bad luck day." So watch out for walking under ladders, broken mirrors, and of course black cats.
