There are many clubs across Second Life. But Netera Landar found one that combines the songs of today with the atmosphere of the 1920s speakeasies: The Pharmacy. She would have a few words with Pet Pinklady, the owner and manager of the venue. So what did Netera think?

Second Life Destinations: "1920s - 1940s New York in Time Portal"

Linden Lab's "Second Life Destinations" from a few days ago is a small step to a time and place most of us have seen only in movies, downtown New York in the 1920s-1940s period.

Put on your very best era-appropriate outfit (think Guys and Dolls, The Great Gatsby, The Aviator, or Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries) and step through the Time Portal and into New York in the 1920 - 1940s. This week’s Destination video takes a jazzy glimpse into the steaming streets and humming hustle of New York during one of it’s most interesting times. Sip a daring drink the speakeasy, cut some rug at the Cocoanut Grove, and experience life outside our current timeline, as you travel back to the noir time of an era gone by!

Gemma Cleanslate wrote an article about the Time Portal in January 2017, with 1920s-1940s New York as one of a few destinations aspiring time travelers can go to.

Reader Submitted: "St. Valentines Day Massacre Revisited"

From Jessicabelle Dayafter. Jessicabelle was trying to do a an animation that was a playful tribute to the St. Valentines Day Massacre done by Al Capone's men in 1929. But it didn't quite come off right. So for now, she settled for a screenshot, with a pink "tommy" gun that shoots hearts, not bullets.

1920s Berlin Project's Eighth Anniversary Celebrations

History fans in Second Life should be happy to know that the 1920's Berlin Project is celebrating it's eighth anniversary. Jo Yardley, who runs the historical roleplay community, made an announcement on her blog.

I can’t believe that it has been 8 years since that evening in 2009 when I opened my club and had our first little 1920s Berlin themed party in a tiny skybox. I didn’t expect much of it, I had only been in SL for a week when I started building and I had no idea what I was doing. But the theme somehow managed to attract the right crowd and within no time a vibrant community of creative, fun, interesting and exciting people started to grow and populate my simplistic pile of prims.

It is impossible to explain how much the 1920s Berlin project means to me and I am always touched and excited to hear that it also means a lot to so many others.

Starting May 30 and ending June 6, there will be celebratory events daily, mostly in the early to mid afternoon, though a few are in the late morning or late afternoon. Tuesday May 30 was the dance under the Brandenburg Gate, followed by fireworks. Wednesday May 31 has children's events. Thursday June 1 includes the food festival with beer, sausage, beer, cheese, and more beer. Friday June 2 will be a celebratory dinner and live music at the Hotel Adlon. Saturday June 3 has the Miss Berlin Beauty pageant. Sunday June 4 has the opening of a new library and art venue. Monday June 5 has a pool party and a showing of the movie "Berlin Alexanderplatz" (1931). Tuesday June 6 is when the normal rules about modern clothing and nonhuman avatars are relaxed (personal note: the only day I can get into the place with my normal look).

There is also a "My Favorite Spot in Berlin" photo contest, with a 2500 Linden prize (second place 1000 Lindens).

The Time Portal Community Hub

Gemma Cleanslate's latest travels took her to a place that can take visitors to other places representing different time periods, the Time Portal Community. Created by Jo Yardley, noted for her 1920s Berlin Project, the hub is for "time travelers and virtual history." Gemma used it to engage in a virtual history tour herself.

1920's Chicago Roleplay

Fritter Enzyme is back from exploring an American city from an earlier time. In the 1920's Chicago roleplay area, visitors are welcome to drop in and look around. You can get yourself some outfits that fit the era, drop in at the local movie theater, the local speakeasy, an art exhibit, or even a burlesque show. One can also take part in the gang wars if one desires. Though take note, the morgue and undertaker are around for a reason.

New Toulouse

Last Tuesday in Second Life was Mardi Gras in Second Life. One of the places holding a parade, as it has every year for a time, is New Toulouse. A residential and roleplay community, it reflects New Orleans in the 1920s. Fritter Enzyme took a look at the place once "Fat Tuesday" was over, and even when it's most famous event wasn't going on, found there was a great deal for visitors to see.

1920s Berlin Project Fifth Anniversary's Open House

Among the historical RP areas is the 1920s Berlin Project by Jo Yardley. Normally closed to nonhuman avatars, it was briefly opened to them in its "Open House" last Thursday as part of it's Fifth Anniversary line of events. Bixyl Shuftan took the chance to visit the place, listened to a few locals, including Jo, and took a few pictures.

Seraph City and Dryland, to Close

Yesterday came some news that two places in Second Life would soon be closing their doors, Seraph City and Dryland.

Seraph City was made in the style of the early 20th Century view of the urban experience of the future, or "Dieselpunk" as it was branded. There were numerous buildings, such as shops, as well as a train and a couple cars. The main buildings were the town hall, located next to the SURL I came across, and the "Seraph Club," a place that could easily hold a crowd  and was made with live events in mind.

 There was quite a bit to see. The old fashioned advertisements and signs added to the feel of the place.

Seraph City was one of the locations in "The Blackened Mirror" Second Life show, as well as where one of the characters came from.

It is still unknown as to why Seraph City is closing, which is set for mid-March. The group for it's fans has been closed to new entries. It did state, "Please direct any questions to Bromo Ivory or Edward Pearse."

"Dryland" is located in the Mado sim. In January, Second Life Newser was here when the "Lost Second Life" (link) exhibit by Ziki Questi was set up here. And now irronicaly this sim itself will soon be lost.

Designed by Anita Witt, a notecard I picked up stated she was, "Inspired by the man-made disaster that is the giant dried out Aral Sea in Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan" caused when the body of water shrank after rivers feeding it were diverted by the Communist government for collective farms. The result was that towns and villages that once depended on the sea were abandoned when their source of livelihood dried up.

The sim has a sense of being an abandoned wasteland, with scattered abandoned ships and buildings, and numerous other wrecks and debris. A lighthouse was still running, providing light for sea traffic that no longer existed. Not far from what was left of the water was a small carnival of some kind.

Inara Pey says the sim will most likely close in late March, quoting Anita, "I thought I’d give you all a fair warning in case you have photos or machinimas to make that requires a Dryland background, or if you’d just like to hang out one last time before it’s all gone."
