The ancient Greeks were instrumental in developing fundamental concepts in a wide range of science and math disciplines such as Palaeontology, Geometry, Medicine, Astronomy, and Physics. I am by no means an expert on this topic but will present what I know in voice and participants are free to share their knowledge on this topic in local chat.

"Deep Learning"

Saturday January 8

In 2021 I had the opportunity to give a presentation on computer vision and bias in artificial intelligence. I touched on a subset of AI methods termed “Deep learning”. In this presentation I hope to discuss the principles and utility of these methods, share some of my experiences in learning about and applying them and tell you why I think it’s super cool that computers can mimic processes in our brains to process information.

"My Greece, My Cats" by Slatan Dryke

 

Last week, a new photography exhibit opened in the Kultivate Gallery, "My Greece, My Cats." The various pictures were from Slatan Dryke. The Newser was at the opening party, and had a look at what was there.

The Museums of Archaeology

Gemma Cleanslate found out about a place called the Museums of Archaeology. Owned by Qvintvs Petilivs Secvndvs   (SeverusAlexander Resident), the place is a history lover's delight, offering not flat pictures of locations in time, but three-dimensional landscapes and builds. Gemma took a look around, finding ancient Greece, Rome, Medieval France, and other places.

Reader Submitted: Postcards From Greece

 Anne Brightstar, after informing the Newser of a tip that the Greek Islands would soon be closing, send over several screenshots of the location.

 A build of the Parthenon, one of the most famous remains of Ancient Greece.

As it turns out, much of the thirteen sim area has already been lost. How much longer the rest of the estates remains up is unknown.

"Final Sunset Over the Parthenon?" Greek Island May Close This Week

If you're a fan of real-life locations brought to Second Life, it looks like some bad news just dropped in. A thirteen sim area collectively known as the Greek Islands may be closing as soon as Tuesday July 5.

Anne Brightstar, informed the Newser that she had found out through a Japanese blog that the Greek Island sim would soon be closing. Soon after she posted on her Flickr a message sent to the community's renters

First of all we want to say thank you for your loyalty to us and finding yourself a Home on the Greek Islands. As sad as we are over it, we have to inform you that by next month begin of July 5th, the Greek Islands will close. The rentals which are already paid and going over the Date of 5th July, those days will be of course refund to you. For all further Informations about Rentals please contact our Rental Manager Bai Franciosa or the General Manager of the Greek Islands Bahus Black Gausman, (BBahus Resident). Thank you all for your understanding,

Second Life Newser reported on one of the sims, Myconos, in January 2014 when the sim name was Hellenic Island.

Myconos Island: A Greek Island in Second Life

One special thing about Second Life is that one can find people from around the world on the Grid. And when inspired to build, what they build sometimes reflects their home country. One Greek lady was inspired to take a small island of her country, and rebuild it on the Grid. Going down it's streets, it's like walking about the island's town.

The CALL Art Exhibition Protest

Artistic expression can take on many forms. Sometimes, art is done as a means of protest. At the Somnium Photo Art Gallery, there's a floor dedicated to an exhibition protesting Linden Lab's Terms of Service update infringing on content creators. Second Life Newser took a look at the art, some thought provoking, some humorous, but all with the same message: Linden Lab, respect our rights.

Do you enjoy a good story when told by someone, a fan of Greek myths, or both? Then a place you'll want to check out is Lyle Lindman’s amphitheater. Two times a week, Lyle will tell an audience about the stories of ancient Greece. Grease Coakes had a chance to check out his myth class and talk to him.

The Minoan Empire

Overshadowed by the Lost Gardens of Apollo, another place slated for vanishing was the Mionan Empire historical roleplay sim. Unlike the Lost Gardens, however, the community behind it was able to rebuild in a new location. Before the original place faded away, Netera Landar was able to drop in for a look.
