In Second Life Birthday group chat, talk turned to the balloons the Moles had set up for people to ride around. Camden McAndrews showed off a couple pictures, one "Ballooning over the BBB." When a Rubbery Toy joked "seems you'd need a permit for that," Camden laughed and mused, "Next thing you know, we'll have Bellisseria Balloon Pilot's licenses."

"Tracks To Trenches"

 

 

With this being Veterans Day week, it caught the Newser's attention that the Zany Zen Railway was doing a commemoration in honor of the soldiers of the First World War, "Tracks to Trenches." 

It's that time of year again when we remember those who fought for us, as always the ZZR will be remembering the men and women who served on the WW1 trench railways, delivering vital support to the front line troops. ... During this special tribute, the ZZR will transform into a front-line service, paying homage to all those who served during this critical period in history. You can choose to ride the rails in our Troop Transport, experiencing the journey as soldiers did, or join the munitions train responsible for supplying our troops on the front lines.

 

I dropped in on the last day the exhibit was still being set up. The volunteers were dressed looking more like they were getting ready for a wild party than a military exhibition, but they did their job well. the station had plenty of barbed wire and an observation tower next to it, with a trench and British Mark 1 tanks and Sopwith Camels across the road. At the station itself, small trains were making their rounds. I hopped on one after getting a ticket, and traveled to a couple other stations, the engineer telling any soldiers boarding, "keep your battle bowlers on."

I had a few words with Zen Swords-Galway (ZenriaCo Resident), one of the women setting up the exhibit. She told me this was the eighth year in a row the ZZR had done an exhibit like this. She enjoyed the banter from the bot engineers, "love those announcements, we got supah lucky and found a actor in SL who did a fairly good British accent."

World War One, originally called The Great War, has been overshadowed by the Second World War, particularly in American history books. But it still had a huge impact on world history. All the death and destruction was a profound shock to Western Civilization and would lead to what some called "The Age of Anxiety" which would last for some decades. Almost 20 million were killed and about as many wounded, many in the static trench warfare that characterized the fighting on the Western Front in which thousands would get killed in fighting a battle and the front line would barely change. The war toppled empires, resulted in the creation of the world's first Communist dictatorship, and although called "The war to end all wars" sadly a generation later the world would be caught up in an even greater global conflict.

 

The exhibit will be up until Monday November 13.

The words on the big balloon are "enjoy every moment," and the two raccoons seem to be doing so by dropping water balloons. Traci would comment the working title was, "you bombed who and what do you mean Xia's home is next? Xia Xevious would respond, "Ooh lovely picture! And don't bomb anything on my roof. I have a live bird flying around, to keep my roof clean (grin)."

Reminder: Sunbeamer Air Show Today: 9AM to 5PM

 

Just a reminder. One of the big yearly events of the Relay for Life's Sunbeamer team, the RFL Sunbeamer Air Show at Sunlight Bay, is today. The action takes place from 9AM to 5PM. There's bicycle blimp races, DJ Kayla and the Roos, dunk tanks, and of course flying airplanes.

RFL Announcement: Tenth Annual Sunbeamer Air Show Saturday April 29

 

 

 Welcome to the 10th Annual Sunbeamer Air Show & Roos With A Dream Dance

The Teams Sunbeamer's and Roos With A Dream welcomes you to the 10th Annual Sunbeamer RFL Air Show Fly-in on Saturday the 29nd of April between the hours of 9AM to 5PM SLT. Roos With A Dream will be performing on stage with DJ Kayla and The Roos at 3pm to 5pm to close the event! 

There will be planes on display with information about them. Some Pilots will be on hand to give rides and flight demonstrations or you can just BYOP [Bring Your Own Plane] and stunt around yourself. 

This year we have two major contest running. The Balloon Bicycle Race and a Bumper Car Contest! At either contest upon a donation to the American Cancer Society kiosk you then acquire a free bicycle powered balloon provided for each entry. You can not use one of your own in the contest unless it is the same thing that is being given. This makes for an even playing field. Also we require that only participants fly the course as non-players will cause the timers to be thrown off. The course runs through the sky were you must pass through rings spaced at intervals that vary in height and direction. Missing a ring causes a disqualified time. You may run the course as many times as you like hopefully bettering your time. Contest runs through the air show hours and the prize of a Aerial Outfitters Sky Skiff Airship will be sent to the winner at the air shows end at 5PM.

The bumper car contest is no ordinary contest, remember it's the Sunbeamers who are not noted as being a very sane group. The contestants may experience changing obstacles, exploding cars, and maybe even...cannon fire? Oh My. Yes the spectators are armed and willing. The contest will be in 5 minute runs with trophies awarded at the end of each. You can enter as many contest as you like.

There will be a carnival midway with a number of activities to participate in.

Balloon Festival in Lavender Lake

 

I heard there was a Balloon Festival in the Lavender Lake area. So I headed over, and was surprised by the number of them in the air around me. There were dozens of them in the air. There were a couple on the ground that had directions to click on the rezz another. They didn't work for me, but they did work for others. 

Supposedly, the festival ends after Sunday, so if you like balloons, hurry on over.

Burglar Ballooning a Bust

Recently, The Podex Exchange was the target of an attempted burglary. The day in late July began much like others at the time. The tellers were discussing the weekend at the Relay for Life track, and were talking about the various exhibits there. Up in the air, however, someone was headed their way.

Floating high up was a figure. He had gotten hold of some lighter-than-air balloons, and was able to take flight. And the breeze was taking him towards Podex. He was the burglar the SLPD have nicknamed “Clumsy Cooper” (a play on the noted thief Sly Cooper), whom has a record of trying to rob the exchange, and never succeeding. His plan this time: when just over the bank, he’d let go of enough balloons for a soft landing, sneak inside from the top, and make off with the Lindens.

However, Clumsy Cooper didn’t count on the region’s air traffic. First a vintage Second World War Two Imperial Japanese bomber flew by, blowing him off course. Then, a little pink dragonette flew over, and began pecking and clawing at the balloons, bursting them. Clumsy Cooper tried scare it by shouting at it, then tried to shoo it away. But the dragonette popped the last few balloons, and the bandit plummeted back down.

Fortunately for Clumsy Cooper, he was over the water at the time. Unfortunately, some of the bank’s neighbors had heard his shouting, let alone the big SPLASH! Wadding out of the drink, he saw people headed his way. He promptly ran off, dropping a notepad and some tools. Although soaking wet, the notepad revealed his plans. The people seeing the pink dragonette with popped balloons in it’s beak and claws, and the SLPD questioning nearby airports, Clumsy's ill fated mission was figured out. Another thing that doomed Clumsy's efforts, he had brought with him safecracking tools, which would have been useless at Podex. “All our exchanges are done through electronic transfer,” a teller explained. There had never been a threat to the exchange's funds.

Clumsy Cooper is wanted for attempting to circumvent a region ban and attempted griefing. Anyone with information of his whereabouts is asked to contact the nearest chapter of the SLPD.

The Podex Exchange has a record of being one of the safest Linden exchange services in Second Life, the data processing done outside the exchange, and has a record of thousands of satisfied customers. Transactions can be done at their website, or their location inworld at Moonberry (26, 223, 34).
