Bomb Diffused At The Newser Office

While reporting the news has always had it's share of critics, seldom do things with telling Second Life news stories result in violence. So it was a surprise when Rebel Wolf (HermitBlue Resident) of the Deathlands informed yours truly that a bomb had been placed at the Newser office in HV Community.

The bomb itself was a metal canister that was small enough to be carried by one strong man, and had a nuclear symbol and a countdown clock. While we could simply toss it into the water into the next sim, we didn't want to cause radioactive pollution. So the decision was made to try and disarm it. 

 So the cover of the circuitry was opened, and we carefully looked things over. Then we went ahead and cut a wire. The result was an alarm going off, and we barely had enough time to duck before there was an explosion of - confetti? It was a prank.

Rebel Wolf didn't say how he found out about the bomb, so it may have been an anonymous tip. So far, there have been no leads on who left the device. Stay tuned for further details.

Reader Submission: Second Life Museum of Nuclear War

Fritter Enzyme was a regular writer for the Newser in the past. While real life has kept him busy, he still writes on occasion about Second Life. Next month are the 72nd anniversaries of the atomic bombings of two cities of the Japanese Empire, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These superweapons finally brought an end to the most destructive war of modern history. But it wasn't long before the Soviet Union developed it's own nuclear weapons, and for decades it and the West were engaged in a nuclear standoff that many feared would end in war and each side destroying the other with their arsenals of atomic weapons. Eventually, the Cold War ended. But rouge states and terrorist organizations are still trying to develop or acquire these weapons of mass destruction. Fritter came across a place in Second Life which takes a look at these issues: The Second Life Museum of Nuclear War.

SL Video: The War In Vietnam Part 1 The Ground War

Vickster Khun announced recently in the WW2 Combat RP group, "You may recall last month WWII Players were asked to participate in an SL movie production about Vietnam. The first segment has just been released on youtube! Check it out!" Vickster herself played the roles of a soldier and an F105 "Thunderchief" pilot. Produced and directed by Luke Flywalker.

Having a Blast at the Military Expo

It was "Death from above" at the March Military Expo early Tuesday afternoon. at 12PM SL time, formations of A-10 "Warthog" ground attack aircraft from the Flying Tiger's 74th Squadron took off from an airport in the WW2 Tribute sim. Their mission: destroy as many of the nearby ground targets as they could.

From the safety of the airport, onlookers could watch, and pan out safely from a distance. They watched as the aircraft blanketed the ground with bombs and missiles, turning tanks, oil drums, observation towers, etc. into black, smoldering, wrecks. But it wasn't long before the wrecks were repaired back into operation, requiring more blowing up from the pilots happy to do so.

Eventually, the pilots came back to base, where they congratulated one another. Among the Tigers was Vickster Khun, also known for her role at the New Bastogne WW2 Combat RP region. Earlier I had a few words with her and officer Jessi Warrhol. They described a few events, including a firefight and rescue on Thursday March 29th. Set for Noon SL time, the 38th Squadron will work with the SL Coast Guard in a firefighting and rescue mission. A ship on fire, if all goes as planned, will have the flames estinguished and the crew evacuated. At the Expo tomorrow. March 28th, will be two air assaults at Noon and 6 SL time respectively.

Besides watching the air campaigns, one can also go to the many shops set up on the memorial flying platform and buy a plane for oneself, or go to one of the music events. Sunday for instance had an Areosmith tribute band, with donations collected for the Relay for Life.

Battle of Britian, 70th Aniversary

While most in Second Life were buzzing about the Emerald mess, some took the time to honor those who fought and died decades before. Tuesday August 24th marked the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the London Blitz. Residents gathered across three places on the Grid to remember those killed.
