"Hamraiders" at Bellisseria Fairgrounds

The Bellisseria Hamsters are at it again. In Bellisseria Fairgrounds, the Bell Hammies' ”Hamraiders The Carrot of Life” is going on in Bellisseria Fairgrounds. Gemma Cleanslate dropped by to check things out, and thankfully there was less peril than a certain archeologist with a fedora, bullwhip, and snake phobia had to go through.

Jurassic Park

Almost thirty years since it's release, the movie "Jurassic Park" continues to wow people and stir memories of those whom saw it. At the time, it was praised for both it's special effects and reviving interest in scientific study of dinosaurs. The first time the heroes see live examples of the extinct beasts walking around ranks as one of the most stirring moments in film. Here in Second Life, a tribute to the movie was made high above the River sim. Recently, the Newser gave the place a visit.

King Kong's Skull Island at LEA9

Even if you're just remotely familiar with the classic movies of Hollywood's Golden Age, chances are you've heard of King Kong. Recently, the Newser found out about Skull Island, a build at LEA9 based on the home of the famous movie monster. Gemma Cleanslate went to the island, and there was a lot more to see than just the giant gorilla. It's a big jungle out there with a lot to see, plus there are the activities and events.

The Amazon River- Eight Regions, One River!

Britty Bee's travels in Second Life took her to a particularly adventuresome place: The Amazon. With eight sims of jungle, there is no shortage of sights to see from villages to ruins to tall mountains. Not only that, the place is home to an active roleplaying community made up of tribes and hardy loners. With the roleplay HUDs, danger is quite literally around every corner as someone or something may be out to get the next unwary traveler.

A Trip to the Amazon: Day One

A few years ago, Linden Lab came up with it's "Amazonian Adventure." While liked overall, some residents thought there was room for improvement. Recently the Newser found out about a newer Amazon area, one which has adventure, but also some dangers. Bixyl Shuftan took a trip over, likely to be the first of a few.

The Jungle

Gemma Cleanslate found an interesting place to explore: The Jungle. Created by Perry Krell and Leigh Elton Krell, the place offers much to explore and see with numerous animals and plant life. There's also a number of places to just relax. Gemma also found an old friend at the location. So who was it?

New Wilderness area in Second Life for Premium Members

Earlier this week, Linden Labs revealed a new region in Second Life, the Wilderness.

Meet other Premium members and travel together through a dense rainforest filled with abandoned ruins, mysterious tombs, and hidden surprises in Wilderness, Second Life's newest exclusive destination for Premium-only fun. Hop aboard a boat cruise for an Amazonian adventure sure to thrill and chill, or check out one of the bars or hangout spots. Rumor even has it there are fish within the waters of the Wilderness, so grab your fishing rod and attempt to catch a rare species - or try to wrangle an ornery alligator!

The wilderness is made up of six sims far (southeast) from the mainland: Gecko, Caiman, Piranha, Tapir, Capybara, and Leech. different from the rest of the Grid in a few ways. Like the Linden Realms gaming area, it's a creation of Linden Labs. Unlike Linden Realms however, it's finely detailed, making much use of mesh objects. Plus it's limited to Premium Account members, the post asking people to take advantage of a 50% discount on memberships (lasting one quarter). Free players trying to get in will be blocked. According to the blog post, it also makes much use of the new Pathfinding tools to animate the critters. It also stated they would be generally available "at the end of March."

There was also a Frequently Asked Questions page for the Wilderness in the Knowledge Base. Besides exploring the place by foot, one could swim or scuba dive and "additional fun activities include competing in a goat race, charming rats with a magic flute, capybara herding, playing fetch, riding around on guided mounts, and various mini-games." There were also details on getting the best visual appearance, depending on how powerful one's computer is.

The response has been, on the whole, positive. In the "Eternal Sunshine" blog, Mera thought the place looked much better in-avatar than what the pictures suggested, "I got a different feeling when I walked around the paths of those sims than I usually get in Second Life. They had more LIFE!" She very much recomended walking about instead of flying or teleporting. She did wonder if a few more features, such as poisonous snakes or infectious diseases, might be needed to keep the place something of a challenge, but she liked it.

Yordie Sands had a more mixed review. At first she had a great impression of the place. Then she had some second thoughts, being less than thrilled with what she saw as "silly" animals, "strange choices" by Linden Lab, and "2007 level animations." She felt while it would still appeal to Premium members, she thought it would mostly be to newer Premium members.

Hamlet Au called the place an attempt by the Lab to boost Premium memberships to make up for shrinking revenue from land tiers. His short article was more noteworthy from it's varied comments. Some free players thought it looked good, but it would take more than this to make them subscribe. Some seemed to have the opinion the one big thing wrong with the sim was Linden Lab itself, "From some of the comments here, I get the sense that there really IS something new and different here (a vast place to explore) but the video just looks like More Of The Same."

Luskwood's Rumble in the Jungle

Last Saturday, I decided to stop by Luskwood to see what was going on. The place certainly had changed since I last stopped by, the Big Tree's platform now overgrown with grass. This might have been a one day happening as I noticed a sign: "Jungle Party - March 26." It was today. These kinds of events don't happen too often at Luskwood, so I checked the map for the nearest cluster of avatars, and headed over.

In the Perry sim next to Lusk, an ancient ruin had been set up, with a rain forest and waterfall around it. There were about a few dozen avatars gathered there, so it took a while for them to rez, and there were probably a couple whom never appeared more than a cloud. With Lusk's strictly enforced PG rating, residents at the tree stay in their clothes. It was somewhat relaxed at the party, with the majority of the avatars wearing loincloths, resulting in a few bare thighs. A few appeared looking like Victorian explorers.

I noticed one security guy looking like some kind of space probe, presumably keeping an eye out for griefers. Mousegirl AnneDroid Lilly stood over the bunch, wearing skins and a ham in her hand (hamming it up?). Blogger Treminari Huet was also there. And in the middle of it all was popular Luskwood Founder Michi Lumin, the skunkgirl still in her trademark tank top and top hat.

Luskwood is one of the oldest social areas in Second Life, as well as the location of the Luskwood furred avatar company. Some in Second Life get their start here, either by stumbling across it, some poping over from the entry area for newcomers, or by hearing about the location. This includes yours truly.

I don’t drop by as often as I used to, but that night was a fun time to be back.

Cap Estel Goes Safari

Grey Lupindo is back after an exciting African safari here in Second Life. At Cap Estel, Maurice Messmer has created a nature park very much worthy of a visit. Ride a giraffe, watch dangerous predators, cross rickety bridges, it's quite an experience.
