Some More SL20B Exhibits

There's a lot to see at the Second Life Twentieth Birthday, and not a lot more time to write about it before it closes. So here's a few more to see while they're still up. Some are educational. Some are funny. Others a little thought-provoking. But they are worth seeing.

Antiquity Art Museum At Texas Capitol Building

The Newser was notified about the opening of an art exhibition in the Antiquity area. Dropping by, the opening party was characterized by people in period clothing. Bixyl Shuftan had a talk to the person behind the exhibit, Jacon Cortes de Bexar (Jacon Cortes) about the exhibit, and why it's location.

Two User-Made Maps of Second Life

Lately the map function of Second Life has been glitched, a fact that somewhat complicated our reporting of the new sims in Bellisseria last week. For a number of residents, these glitches can mean getting around is more complicated and takes longer. And as of now, Linden Lab has no idea when these issues will be fixed. But two people took matters in their own hands with resident-made maps, which can be accessed on a web browser.

One is the Eddy O'Farrel map, found on http://maps.eddyofarrel.com/. The other is the Chaser Zaks map at http://secondlife.softhyena.com/map/. The Chaser Zaks map is more versatile as one can zoom out for a "world map" view showing all of the continents. While it has a "find on map" listed on the right, it doesn't seem to do anything. The first map may change in the future as Eddy plans to update it, "I realise it's probably not that much use right now, particularly as there isn't (yet) any way to search for/load any particular region or area of the map, but I will add more functionality in the next few days if anyone thinks they would actually find it useful."

Neither map can see the new sims, which only show their names. On both maps, the land is still invisible.

Hopefully the Lindens and Moles will fix the Second Life map soon. Until then, hopefully these maps made by residents can help.

Underwater Area Maps

In Safe Waters Foundation chat, Celtic Infinity posted a link to a map showing some mainland, but also plenty of water sims, "The artist collective [ MD ] has been working on a comprehensive map for the Explorers among us. ... We hope it will raise awareness of how immense the undersea area is, and inspire to swim further and find new muses."

One can find a link to it on Flickr here: https://flic.kr/p/2kGaD5v

There is also a second one, "Sea of Fables," here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzsus/50993125817/in/photostream/

The Rumsey Map Islands

Recently a reader requested the Newser to write up on a unique location in Second Life: the Rumsey Map Islands. The four sim area is an extension of a collection of maps by David Rumsey, the resident of the Cartography Associates company in real life. Rumsey began his "David Rumsey Collection" on the Internet two decades ago as a database and blog that today has thousands of maps, mostly from the 18th and 19th Centuries. Deaflegacy went to check out the location and there was quite a lot to see in this spot on the Second Life map.

Maps of Second Life

Maps are pretty important in our lives. When we go some where, we take one. And they're important in Second Life as well. How long can one go without using the one in our viewer? For those curious about maps of Second Life locations old and new, there's a place to check out: the "Maps of Second Life" exhibit at the New Kadath Lighthouse Gallery. Gemma Cleanslate went to check it out, and wrote about it for the Newser.

Minecraft Games

Minecraft is above all a freeform platform in which one can build whatever one wants. It is not a "game" in the traditional sense as there's no "win" (unless one counts The End). But one can build games on it, and one can make these games available via importable Minecraft maps. Nydia Tungsten made a server just for games like these, and on a couple occasions invited her friends and neighbors over to play.

Vanwenia - Realms of Fantasy

Becky Shamen's choice of locations to explore turned out to be not that far away on the Grid from the SL Newser office in the Sunweaver Estates. Across the ocean about two miles away was a large group of Fantasy Medieval sims. The area wasn't unified, and didn't even have a name for the whole place. So besides writing about the region, Becky took it upon herself to give it a name.
