SLife and Times: Instant Judgement Misconceptions

You may have come across them before, people whom when Second Life is mentioned think it's weird. But a few of you may have run into someone who thinks it's more than that, but downright mentally toxic. And then there are those inworld whom will have nothing to do with a particular group of residents, such as those in furred avatars, because of one incident with one errant individual that gave them the impression every single person with his kind of appearance acts like him. Some time ago, I had a confrontation with one of the former, and recently a talk with one of the latter.

Commentary: Misconceptions About Virtual Worlds

Wesley Regenbogen is back writing for the paper after a leave of absence for a few months. During this time, he was making an effort to start a fundraising effort to collect funds for a real-life charity that was working to research treatments and ultimately a cure for a genetic blood disorder. But ultimately his effort would prove unsuccessful. Wesley felt the main reason for the lack of interest of the charities he contacted was either they couldn't understand the concept of virtual worlds, or they had mistaken ideas about what users of virtual worlds did there. Wesley had a few words to say about this.
