More on The Bellissarian Stamp Giver

Last week, we announced that the Newser office in HV Community was now a location one could get a stamp for the Bellisserian passports. Since then, the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy gave us a mention in their own newsletter

"It's a venerable SL publication with a suitably old school HQ build," they spoke of us, "and – now – a wonderfully old-fashioned stamp!"

Other locations mentioned include a couple airports, the Willowtail Airfield, and Abbot's Historical airport.

As for the stamp, well, the design is simple and to the point. Just as is our goal when telling the news.

Christmas Shopping: Dench Designs and Khargo Market

Thanksgiving is over, and unofficially the Christmas shopping season is underway. Gemma Cleanslate stopped at two places, Dench Designs and Khargo Market. Dench is known for it's bargains, but she found a special Christmas Shop on a platform above the sim that was well designed. Khargo also offered an attractive shopping experience that obviously had plenty of planning behind it with winter scenery and Christmas decor.

Commentary: Fourteen Years of Writing About Second Life

It was on November 2007 in which I officially began writing the news about Second Life. I started off as a freelancer at Dana Vanmoer's Second Life Newspaper, soon getting the hang of things and writing about the people, places, and events across the virtual world. Fourteen years later, I'm still doing it. So how did it start, and what's happened over time? Here, I reflect a little on what I've done and what else I've been writing on.

Bellisserian Embasy Opens in Continent of Corsica

The Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy has long been known for it's issuing of passports and stamp locations. But recently, they've been getting involved in something new. Embassies from Bellisseria are springing up in mainland continents, with the first appearing on the land of Corsica last week. Gemma Cleanslate was there, and wrote about the embassy and it's opening.

Looking Back: The Misadventures of Clumsy Cooper

In March 2011, the Newser ran a "fun article" for the purposes of helping to advertise the Podex Exchange. A furry raccoon with a popgun made a lame attempt to hold up the place, possibly inspired by it's nickname: the Podex Bank. As it turned out, this would be just the first of many such fun articles about the clumsy burglar whom kept trying to rob the place and hilariously failing every time. They would go on for over four years until sadly Linden Lab's new rules brought them to an end. In this story, we look back at the takes of the bandit known as Clumsy Cooper.

Organic Chem Basics: Diels-Alder and Similar Reactions

Saturday November 27,

10 AM to 11 AM SL time

The 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Dr. Benjamin List (Max PLack Institute)  and Dr. David MacMillam (Princeton University) for “the development of asymmetric organocatalysis.” One of the first reactions that they found could be catalyzed by purely organic compounds was the Diels-Alder reaction. The Diels-Alder reaction is a well-known example of a fundamental class of reactions in organic chemistry, and it can proceed unaided, be catalyzed by metal-containing compounds, or most recently catalyzed by purely organic species. We’ll talk about what makes the Diels-Alder reaction special, and how it has been catalyzed in the past, and why the recent Nobel prize is seen as a jump forward.

Mieville's Community Thanksgiving Dinner

On Wednesday November 17, the Mieville community held it's Thanksgiving Community Dinner. While aimed at the community, it was open to all. So I sent my alt RezzDammit over. The setting was arranged by Farzaneh Eel, Unalunaqat and BellaBorneBradley.

I arrived a bit late, but there were still some people over. So I got a few pictures. I few more can be seen in Mieville's Flickr page

Cartoon of The Day: Pilgrim Hunter

Taken at the Happy Vixen. Gil Ottared was dressed as a pilgrim hunter, gun in hand. But this Thanksgiving has a shadow over it. Not only do people still have to worry about the Pandemic, but also the supply disruptions and shortages it's indirectly caused. So some people will have to forget having a bird on the table, or take matters in their own hands.

Crystal Craze

There's a new game on the Second Life grid, Crystal Craze. It's a hunting game in which you travel to various locations to get crystals. For the players, not only is there the thrill of the hunt, they also get a chance at some Linden dollars. For the landowners, they get traffic. Gemma Cleanslate went to take a closer took at the game, and got a chance to talk to it's creator.

EOTB: Viewer Search Updated With New Look

On Monday November 22, Linden Lab announced on their blog they had updated the appearance of the search function on their Second Life Viewer.

Today we’re excited to announce that we’ve updated the look of our inworld and web-side Search feature to bring it more in line with the look and feel of our viewer and the direction that that rest of our web properties will be going (see the new Join page, and the new secondlife.com landing page - they’re excellent).

Our goal was to clean up the interface and provide a more streamlined and user friendly Search feature that maintained all the functionality that we’ve all come to expect and rely upon. Helpful tool tips will guide you in getting the most functionality out of your searches, and will update as we add more options for more sophisticated searches.

Once you’ve begun your search, you’ll find that all the familiar options are still available so that you can refine your search for Places, People, Events, Groups, Land to Buy or Rent, Classifieds, etc. We have not changed the algorithm that our Search feature uses in any way. We have simply tried to present the information in a more pleasing and useful manner.

Trying it out, I noticed some differences right away. The appearance was different, wth larger letters, and fewer names initially visible, just several. Of the latter, one could just scroll down. It was also possible to not just search categories one at a time, but all at once.

Checking one thread on the forums, reception seemed to be mixed with those not liking the change being the more vocal. "This new search page looks like a roll back to geo cities looking websites very very horrible look." "Grade B-, for effort." "I have never understood why the Lindens broke this, and why they couldn't remain happy with it as it was." "The massive space taken up by the SL logo and search area title at the top if the entry page is problematic..." "We are NOT impressed, LL."

Inara Pey would write about the "search facelift" on her blog. She called it an example of "flat design," feeling it was "understandable" if the Lab wanted to make this new search function part of a mobile client. She felt it's home page "looks clean" with "options easy to identify." But there was "A terrible waste of space in the banner area" and the left sidebat tabes were too broad. Of search results, she felt there was "Much better listing layout and improved readability." But on the other hand, "the number of results displayed before scrolling is required is an annoyance, and something of a step back" and "There are also some informational elements lacking (such as traffic)." In the end, her conclusion was, "I can live with the shortfalls and can appreciate the improvements, and will await further changes to see how things fair."

Bellisserian Stamp Location At The Newser Office

 *

For about a year and a half, the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy, or BBB, has been offering passports to residents. And these residents have gone about Second Life to add stamps on them representing locations. Now, the main Second Life Newser office has a passport stamper.

Just go to our main office at HV Community, go inside, walk past the desk, and in the back is a stand marked "BBB." Touch the top of the stand to get your stamp, and you'll have another mark to show what a traveler you are.

While you're there, why not explore around? Walk the stairs to a train station, where occasionally the Sunbeamer Express stops to pick up passengers. Just across the street is a shop, Brandi's Intimates. To the east is Sunlight Bay, with Farshore Field where one can rezz and fly a plane and the Puddlejumper Mall. To the northeast at Sunny Beach and SunWaterThree, there are the Gathering Oak and Bouncing Bunny Beach Club, in which between events one can surf or drive bumper boats. In SunWaterTwo are hidden caverns one can explore. In SunWaterOne is a German pocket Battleship and a small volcano.

Just respect privacy at homes when going about.

Botanica's Thanksgiving Mini Hunt

Caught between Halloween and Christmas, Thanksgiving sometimes gets the short end of the stick when it comes to attention. But in Blue Moon, there's a "mini hunt" in the theme of the holiday going on. So I dropped by to take a look.

It’s the one day in the year when Americans who can’t agree on anything will sit down together and agree on what to have for dinner. Enjoy a holiday feast and learn about the Thanksgiving traditions that bring together family and friends in the spirit of gratitude at Botanica’s Café Americana. This is an educational mini hunt with 7 Thanksgiving-themed prizes to earn a Thanksgiving feast for your table. The event runs from November 12th to 26th.

Blue Moon had a wintery look, and the SURL I found took me to a building in a town area with Christmas and Thanksgiving decor, with a few turkeys around, including one walking around. One lady 'bot going about offered me a little cocoa. Stepping inside, the place resembled a small bakery and diner. There were a few tables up front, the nearest to the door I could sit in and get dinner. A smaller one looked like another a couple people could play a game of chess. In the back was a counter full of pies and other baked goods. There were also numerous pictures on the walls, such as American Indians and the classic Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving dinner picture.

Going in, I was handed a notecard, "Welcome Botanica's Thanksgiving Mini Hunt. Begin by finding the painting of the First Thanksgiving, click it,  and then follow the clues." Clicking on the picture, I got a copy, and a Internet link to some information about the first Thanksgiving dinner. There were some dishes that aren't usually part of what's served today. I also got a clue on what to click on next. I had eight things to click on, and the clues were easy enough for me to figure out. So I ended up with eight decorative gifts.

As stated, the hunt goes on to the day after Thanksgiving, November 26.

Jurassic Park

Almost thirty years since it's release, the movie "Jurassic Park" continues to wow people and stir memories of those whom saw it. At the time, it was praised for both it's special effects and reviving interest in scientific study of dinosaurs. The first time the heroes see live examples of the extinct beasts walking around ranks as one of the most stirring moments in film. Here in Second Life, a tribute to the movie was made high above the River sim. Recently, the Newser gave the place a visit.

"Choking on Red Pills, A Biological Take on Modern Dating Dynamics"

Saturday November 20,

10 AM to 11 AM SL time

The basic tenet of biology is reproduction to continue the species. Evolution and genetics has programmed every species’ to follow behaviors to ensure the next generation. Sometimes this has resulted in seemingly contradictory behaviors like male spiders sacrificing themselves after mating.

Given this pattern of programming in sexually reproducing species, it is flabbergasting that some people are choosing to exit the mating pool consciously. These movements (Men Going Their Own Way, Involuntary Celibates, parts of The Manosphere, etc) espouse very different interactions in the mating game, primarily to exit it. Collectively using the term “Red Pill” (a reference to The Matrix) this philosophy claims to now be awakened to the truth of how society oppresses men.

This presentation will explore initially the biology of sexual reproduction in vertebrates and humans then look to reconcile or at least understand better the current society/cultural situation.

People can contact him by IMing if he's on, or by notecard if he isn't. He can also be found at his sim, the Deathlands at Paradise Kingdom (88/35/22), notably at the Fallout Shelter when it has events Sundays 4-8 PM SL time.

It's been a few weeks since Mark Zuckerburg announced the company behind Facebook would be changing it's name to Meta. Since then, there have been more developments, and more people commenting. Among those with something to say was Grumpity Linden, or Anya Kanevsky in real life. She was interviewed by a magazine, and had a few things to say about Facebook's plans and how they related to Second Life, the existing virtual world.
