Happy Leap Year Day

It's February 29, which occurs only every four years. Sorry that there's no picture of a bunny, or anything. It's been a busy, leaping day.

Belliserria For Life

The Belliforlife group has opened its 10 fun filled days of games , music , dance , and live performances.

The fairgrounds is packed amazing games and among the builds a Scavenger hunt. The event is remembering Doug Windsor, who was a victim of cancer last year.

There is a huge Bowling alley so bring friends and check out all the games available to play! There will be trophies awarded for top winners.

Here is the event page for each day! Come join in the fun and support the Relay for Life at the same time!

Mojo And Styfy Linden Have Left Linden Lab

Two of the Linden Lab team, Andrew Kertesz aka Mojo Linden and Steven Feuling, have recently departed. According to an article by Inara Pey, they were still on in late December, but by mid-January were no longer listed on the company website. There was no announcement by Linden Lab the Newser is aware of.

Mojo Linden was the VP of Engineering, having signed up in August 2021, some months after the departure of the popular Oz Linden. Styfy Linden was the Chief Marketing Officer.
Mojo Linden has been at several Lab Gab events over the past couple years, and has been part of the team working on the mobile viewer, currently in a limited release public alpha. Styfy didn't appear at public events as often, but was at a Second Life Birthday's "Meet The Lindens" event last year in June 2023.

Inara would comment, "I had wondered as to Mojo’s whereabouts a couple of times of late; his absence from the CCUG meetings had become sufficient enough for me to notice." She would "wish both gentlemen well in their respective futures, and also thank Mojo (should he ever read this!) for taking the time to engage with users and in responding to nagging enquiries from the likes of myself."

Expansion of Mediterranean Linden Home Area In Bellisseria

In December, Linden Lab unveiled it's next line of Linden Homes for Premium-Plus accounts: the Mediterranean. With this announcement, some land with the homes was opened just offshore north of the  Bellisseria landmass just west of the Sakura homes. This month, the area of sims has been expanded. This included two connections, one of which was linked by a bridge.

The bridge is in the Goodge Reef sim (no sign of anyone named Charlie Brown). One could walk or drive across the bridge. But there's also a cannon at both ends. One can get in, and with a press of the button, fly into the air, and go splat onto the beach at the other side.

Premium-Plus residents are no doubt happy to hear about the new homes available to move in, as well as fans of Bellisseria who are pleased to have more land to explore.

Haunted House in Bridesmere, Bellisseria

October isn't the only time you can find a haunted house in Second Life. Gemma Cleanslate recently heard about one in the Bridesmere sim in Bellisseria. Called the Mysterious Manor, it was created by Evangeline Ling, and has a number of spooky thrills. So what did Gemma think?

Read Gemma's story in Places.

Comedy Club to Open

There are many clubs in Second Life. But what about a stand-up comedy club? The Newser was informed about a Cody LaSala (codyjlascala) setting one up in the Rebeck sim. He's currently looking for performers. Talking to him, the club is set to open on Thursday March 7.

Reader Submitted: The Sunbeamer Moon Dance

You never know what you might find on the dark side of the moon. In SL, you can find humans, furries, robots, Roos and more at the weekly RFL team Sunbeamers Moon Dances with deejay Cynthia Farshore. Kudos and a big THANK YOU to the team for hosting their first of many BYOK events this season. They repeatedly show their "One Team" spirit by bringing together many teams at this weekly dance where attendees can contribute to the fundraising efforts of every team present, rather than only to their own. And on a side note, their very first event of the season just happened to be on the same day that a private American company landed a craft on the south pole of the moon, over 50 years since the last time an American space craft landed on the moon. What synchronicity!

Taken at the Relay Kickoff. In SL, one can make their avatar more or less as big as one wants. So how would this happen elsewhere? I could think of a few possibilities.

Lab Gab On Mobile Viewer Update This Thursday

Last week, Linden Lab announced there would be an episode of Lab Gab on Thursday February 29, at 10 AM SL time. The subject: an update on developments on the Second Life Mobile Viewer.

Interested in learning more about our Second Life Mobile app? Our development team is working hard to add new features and fixes to bring the best of Second Life to iOS and Android mobile and tablet platforms – it’s an entire virtual world in the palm of your hands!

Second Life’s Senior VP of Product Grumpity Linden and Senior VP of Product Operations Patch Linden will be discussing the latest updates and future plans for Second Life Mobile ...

Residents are free to submit questions. Those interested need to fill out this form on Google Docs, "some selected questions will be answered by both Grumpity and Patch on the show." You'll need to hurry as it will close sometime tomorrow, Monday February 26. The event will be pre-recorded and presumably no live audience watching.

"Special Rezday Livestream - Draxtor is turning 17!"

From Draxtor Despress on February 29, "On February 20th this year it has been 17 years. Of being STUCK in the virtual realm ... OR HAS IT? Where does the time go? Does it go into a prim and it is then stored somewhere on the mainland where only Philip Rosedale has access to it? Why does Drax still wear a Slink body? What about the turtleneck he sported in 2009, or the Pacman shirt he used to wear until Linden Lab Lawyers (LLL) made him burn it and distribute the ashes over the Blake Sea? Lots of questions and no answers shall be given on this special Rez Day live stream. BUT lots and lots of stories and videos and perhaps special guests, and friends, and maybe enemies (since I am naive enought to show the location where I am at), dropping in and out"

Possible adult language in the video (yours truly didn't see all two hours)

Linden Lab Spotlights Creations Park

Earlier this month, Linden Lab highlighted Creations Park, run by Barbie Alchemi with the help of Carlyle Chaparral, and the home of the Creations for Parkinsons group.

Dive into the heart of creativity and connection in Second Life with the latest addition to our Made in SL series, "Creations Park Made in Second Life."

In this two-part feature, we highlight the inspiring stories of Barbie Alchemi and Carlyle Chaparral, two remarkable Residents who have transformed their virtual experiences into avenues of real-world impact and cultural enrichment.

In the first video made by Draxtor Despres about Creations, he talked to Barnie Alchemi, who described how her mother Fran Serenade was the inspiration to create the place. In Drax's second video, he talked to Carlyle, who talked about the Savoy Ballroom, and the history of it's real-life counterpart.

RFL Sunbeamer Weekly Moon Dance Starts Tonight

The weekly event of Relay for Life in SL's Team Sunbeamers is once again starting: the Moon Dance. "Be shot from the Moon Cannon to a dance on the moon in support of Relay for Life in Second Life." This is a multi-team event, and all Relayers, and others in Second Life from newcomers to long-timers, from tiny to huge (large dragons please watch where you step when you dance) are welcome.

Every Thursday, starting February 22 from 6 to 8 PM

Goes on to Thursday June 6

DJ Competition For Relay For Life

On Sunday February 18, there was a DJ competition hosted by Relay for Life's Team Sugar Skols. the event took place Sunday afternoon and early evening, starting at 4PM SL time.

The Sugar Skols RFL season kicks off on Sunday, February 18th at 4SLT with an EPIC DJ Battle to raise money for the ACS! Please join us to support the battle cries of our incredible DJs as they face off head to head with surprise theme and twist to kick off the season in style and raise money to kick cancer’s ass! Every warrior goes to Valhalla! Skol!

Among the several DJs were two from Team Sunweavers, DJ Snowbuns and DJ Shockwave. While most competitions had the performers playing one hour at a time, in this one they would play two or three tunes, then another DJ would. Each was on a small stage with a kiosk next to it, with fans sending money to them. The winner was the one who raised the most.

DJ Snowbuns would later tell me she won second place at the DJ battle. She had gotten a trophy for her efforts.

Go Relay!

RFL Sunbeamers Starting Off At Over A Half Million Lindens

With the start of the Relay for Life fundraising season last Saturday, the various teams started raising Lindens. Some had spent the time between seasons quietly collecting cash. Among them was team Sunbeamers. Between seasons, they had raised funds in an off-season jar. When the Relay kiosks were ready to receive the money, the "Sunnies" had over half a million Linden dollars, as of now over 545,000 Lindens.

Assuming fundraising levels haven't changed since last year, this puts the team in Jade level fundraising. And this is just the beginning. Can the team match last year's Ruby level?

Go Sunbeamers! Go Relay!

The Bellisseria Commissary

Gemma Cleanslate stopped by Bellisseria the other day to check out a location that has been around for a little while but hasn't been written about yet: the Commissary at Hartsmere. You can get (virtual) food there. But you can also get some information and a chance to relax a little and maybe some conversation. So what did Gemma think?

Black History Exhibit at Learning Virtualē

In August 2009, I established LV, a learning center, in Second Life. The Black History Exhibit has been a permanent, evolving exhibit since 2013 while Black History Month has been observed at LV since 2010. The 2024 theme for Black History Month, as determined by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), is “African Americans and the Arts.” Below are some pictures of the Black History Month section of the Black History Exhibit at LV which tie into the annual theme.

(LV Black History exhibit )
A presentation about the development and purpose of Black History Month.

Scenes from the 2024 Black History Month section:

This section includes summaries of major African American arts movements: Coming to America, the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, Hip Hop, and Afrofuturism.

This section includes presentations with biographies and summaries of honors/recognition for 5 featured artists in each category: Performing Arts (Alvin Ailey, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, and Prince), Visual Arts (William Artis, Margaret Burroughs, Edmonia Lewis, Henry Tanner, and James Van Der Zee), and Literature (James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Octavia Butler, Phillis Wheatley, and August Wilson).

This section has the first few paragraphs of the annual Presidential Proclamation for Black History Month plus a visitor can touch the object for a notecard of the full proclamation from President Biden. A visitor can touch the other board to access the 2024 ASALH Black History Month Theme brochure (an online PDF file).

In this section, visitors can touch the image for a notecard with a list of African American artists that have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by year.

The rest of the Black History Exhibit covers Slavery and Emancipation, the Civil War, Why We March (Jim Crow Laws) and the March on Washington (the Civil Rights Movement), Civil Rights and Voting Rights, and a general reference room with a timeline 1600s-present of major events and other information. Historical documents, images, and notecards share the stories of black history, an integral part of U.S. history. The permanent exhibit will continue to be available and the 2024 Black History Month section will be available until at least the end of 2024 when preparations are made for the 2025 theme.

Valentine's Day - Love in the Air at Love & Harmony Jazz Romantic

Much happened in Second Life on Valentines Day. There was the Love Train and Hug A Linden (which none of the Newser reporters were able to attend, maybe next year). But there were also many other events across the various venues of Second Life. Among them was Love and Harmony Jazz Romantic.  Dancerina Starlight stopped by there, where owner and manager Orchide Delmar held a special Valentines Day party.

The 2024 Relay Season Kickoff

Saturday February 17 at 10 AM was the official start of the Relay For Life 2024 fundraising season - The Kickoff. This event was the beginning of this year's season of the most successful annual charity event in Second Life. The place was packed, with almost 200 residents in the two sims the event took place in, American Cancer Society 2 and 3.

The event was streamed live, and later a recording of the event posted on Youtube

There were avatars of all shapes and sizes there.

Wildstar and Oldesoul (tiny) were with Team ACTS' captain Liz Wilner.

Cynthia Farshore was there, flying the flag of the Sunbeamer team.

Some of the team "Roos With a Dream" were there as well (sorry to say with all the lag not all the avatars rezzed for my camera.

I was there for almost an hour. Despite the lag, the enthusiasm was very contagious. Almost two hundred humans, furs, ferals, tinies, and other avies all united for the purpose of defeating cancer.

Be sure to check the Newser for more Relay articles, and announcements.

SL Living Expo Announces 4 Million Lindens Raised At Event

Yesterday February 17, it was announced by Cody and Roxy Chronotis of the SL Living Expo that the event had "surpassed all expectations" and raised over over four million Linden dollars. Details were in a press release on the bottom of the front page of the event blog.

Thanks to the overwhelming support of the Relay for Life community and beyond, we are thrilled to announce that this year's event has surpassed all expectations. Not only did we exceed our fundraising goals, but we also kickstarted the Relay For Life season with enthusiasm and momentum.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. From our sponsors and participants to the talented performers, this event truly exemplified the power of teamwork and community spirit.

Together we are making a difference in the fight against cancer by raising over $4 million Lindens at the SL Living Expo and that number is still growing. That is over $16,000 USD!

While the Expo events are official over, the sims will be up for another day or two. The fundraising for the Living Expo is about over. But now the official fundraising season is underway, and the various teams are now raising cash. For the Relay this year, things have gotten off to a good start, and it's only the beginning.

Valentine's Day

Taken at Calas Galadhon Park

It's Valentines Day (or happy stick it to singles day depending on your point of view), the day in which couples give one another small tokens of their affection, or find other ways to demonstrate it to one another. The Shop and Hop is open for those looking to get a present for someone. Or you can take your virtual honey to a romantic spot to cuddle, or perhaps a themed event to dance to. And there's also the "Hug A Linden/Dunk A Linden" today at the Isle of View.

Happy V-Day for couples and singles (you can still get lucky, find a nice new friend of the opposite sex, or both).

No Word On One Billion Rising Event

For several years, February 14 in Second Life not only had numerous Valentine's Day events, but also had the One Billion Rising event, part of a worldwide demonstration in support of women's rights across the globe. There were numerous music events, and many displays by artists.

Last year however, the event was called off due to a number of the people being "overwhelmed by real life and other commitments." Checking the blog and the group, there was no information about any event for 2024.

It's likely the event will revive some time in the future. But it seems for now One Billion Rising is closed.

It Came From Bellisseria Chat: "Sorting My Patches"

Last week, at one point the people in Bellisseria chat were talking about an inventory sorting party, "We decided to start the inventory sorting party early. Come on over and have fun with us while sorting your inventory... or not." At one point, Dreamer Pixelmaid commented, "I keep deleting things, but it keeps increasing LOL!" Then later on, "I'm going to rez all my Patches." Someone commented, "Hey cutout Patch!" Traci Quandry-Marabana (Traci Quandry) remarked, "A Patch a day keeps the cornfield away." Dreamer pointed to the largest cutout, "Touch the big Patch to get candy!" She had rezzed a total of six cutouts of Patch Linden, calling it, "Sorting my Patches."

Kowloon Locker Festival: A Virtual Spectacle of Creativity Second Life

After a hiatus, Newser reporter Klaus Bereznyak is back with an article. Today, he looks at an event going on in Kowloon. This Asian urban-themed sim has been in Second Life for years, know for it's appearance. But there's also events there. Klaus recently went to Kowloon's Locker Festival. So what's a locker festival?

Community Exhibition In The WelcomeHub Sim

On January 30, something new was introduced to the WelcomeHub sim. Linden Lab wasn't just touting Bellisseria to the residents. They were offering other communities in Second Life to tout themselves to newcomers and others visiting the region. The location was called the Community Exhibition.

As part of our effort to better connect virtual world newcomers with some of the best and most active inworld communities, we’re excited to debut an all-new expansion to the Hub – the Second Life Community Exhibition (SLCE).

SLCE aims to bring more visibility and exposure to a diverse range of Second Life communities during the earliest moments of the new Resident journey via primely-positioned exhibition space in one of our most active and popular starting points for all newly-registered Residents.

Dropping by there, there were exhibits from the first eleven communities that had signed up to be on display. Some were more familiar than others. Among those that most seasoned residents would most likely recognize included Bay City, Virtual Ability. Burn2, Non-Profit Commons, and Caledon.

There was also a special Lab Gab episode, streamed live on the day of the announcement, featuring Strawberry and Patch Linden. Besides the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, they talked to several individuals representing their communities, such as Marianne McCann of Bay City.

The Lab plans to expand the Community Center, and is inviting more communities to sign up. Community leaders, or officers who can represent their communities, are invited to fill out the application form (here). Those taking part need to be open to new residents, "priority consideration" will be given to those with a history of having newcomer-friendly events, they need to have been active for at least one year, while communities don't have to be G-rated their exhibits at the Center need to be, and more.
