Gift Grab Week Ten

Week Ten of the SL15B "Gift Grab" is almost done. For those with the "Swaginator HUD" from the SL15B, there's one day left to get the prize if you haven't gotten it yet. This week's hint is, "Come have a drink at this futuristic bar. This is where the gift will not be too far." The location is the Horizon's Community H-Bar in Horizons Themis (121/194/24).

Unpacking the item, you get a crystal hoverboard. This is a small vehicle that you can control with the arrow keys or viewer movement controls, and can skim over water. Pressing "jump" will boost the board in the air. Doing so a number of times will make it take flight. And yes, it glows in the dark.

Tomorrow is Week Eleven, and after that just four more until the fifteenth and last item.

Gift Grab Week Eight

For those who haven't done the latest "Gift Grab" from Linden Lab yet this week, (described in their blog post of the event and briefly at the end of our June 22 article of The Birthday), this week's area is a bit on the creepy side. The hint is, "Come and visit for a spooky stay. Once you enter you may never go away!" It is in the Falmouth Hotel in the Falmouth sim in the Bay City area.

The description of the place is, "The Falmouth Hotel will reopen soon after some slight superatural damage is repaired." The scream I heard just after I arrived was a sign that it wasn't. The hotel was one creepy place inside and outside, with some low spooky music playing. Getting to the room where the gift was located, it was a bar with a bloody zombie bartender and some creepy-looking teddy bears. They were old, bloodstained, and had their eyes redone with buttons. One group was drinking what looked like blood in teacups and the other one had a desert bowl of eyeballs. There was some occasional childish giggling, and once in a while the teddys would break out into outright laughter, often while their heads were turned toward someone in the place. Creepy.

The room had been made by Governor and Michael Linden and Squishy, Crazy, and Silent Mole. What they were thinking of, who knows? A certain Bay City resident spotted me on her radar and messaged me, "Say hi to the teddy bears for me." I went ahead and got the Crystal Anniversary gift, and headed home. There, I rezzed the crystal it was packaged it, and got the contents.

And this week's gift, a crystal ball. When rezzed and placed, when clicked on it will give you your fortune for the day. Occasionally, it will offer useful advice, "Don't just say that you are sorry. Mean it." But more often are witty and amusing comments, "May your hair ever be worn on your head." "Never sit on a pose ball you aren't prepared to make a commitment to." "A conclusion is simply the place where you got tired of typing." "Avoid loud noises and low-flying ducks."

This is Week Eight of the Gift Grab, which lasts until late September in which Week Fifteen is for those who got all fourteen of the previous gifts.

SL15B's Bear Island Open For Gift Grab This Week

For those of you doing the "Gift Grab" from the Second Life Fifteenth Birthday from last month (described in their blog post of the event and briefly at the end of our June 22 article of The Birthday), this week's gift is found at a sim from the SL15B grounds that's either been brought back (or perhaps not closed yet): Bear Island. “Go to this location and you can see, all the bears that already be.”

Heading over to Bear Island (170/201/21), the place looked like what I remembered it from the Second Life Birthday. For those who don't know, many Lindens carry a teddy bear with them, each having their own personal touches depending on the Linden, that residents they run into can politely ask for (if the Linden's having a busy day, your bear may have to wait). Bear Island has most of these bears, plus some special commemorative ones, such as the one given out to celebrate the one millionth resident getting an account, and the one made to promote the release of Viewer 2.

There were other residents going about the area. This week, people could grab more than just the weekly gift. One lady was saying, "I'm always pestering lindens anytime I see them for their bears, this way I can get them a bunch all at once."

In previous weeks, some chests could take a little effort to find, one week it being on the second floor of the building. The chest for this week's gift was plain to see. I had on my "Swaganator HUD" (not visible in this picture), and got the gift.

Previous weeks gifts have included t-shirts, a crystal staff, a can of "party string", and more. This week, the gift is a crystal teddy bear. Not the most cuddly-looking kind of teddy, but one can change it's color by clicking on it.

This week is Week Seven of the Gift Grab, with a new one every week. The one for the fifteenth week is available only for those who get the first fourteen. What is it? We know only that the Lab says it's a special gift.

The Simon Linden Bear Hunt

Last week I wrote about a skiing place in Wengen. Something caught my eye when I was near the summit. I was looking around to make sure I did not miss any options for the skiiing when a tiny object sticking out of the snow caught my eye. Being a nosy reporter I cammed in on it and clicked.

“Hi - Do you want a Simon Linden bear? You'll need to say all four of the magic words you picked up on the trip. If this makes no sense, chat 'help' and you'll find out.”

Wow I thought , you don’t see Linden bears like you used to years ago. They are hard to come by. “

"I didn't get the magic words.   Did you type them in chat?   Touch me to try again.”

I was too far away so moved closer and tried the word help again.

”Glad you made it here, Gemma Cleanslate.  I hope you enjoyed the view. Here is some more information.” And I was handed a notecard.

“Do you want a Simon Linden Bear. These are no longer just given away to everyone who comes along ... you have to go on a treasure hunt to find one. To get a  bear, first go to the .... and look for a bear.   Click on him and he will tell you what to do next.  You'll have to answer a few simple questions. On the way, you'll get several notecards with instructions and 'magic words' that are needed for the next step.   Keep these - if you get stuck, go back and read them carefully. You will also need all of the magic words at the end to receive your bear. Good luck! - Simon Linden  P.S.   If you get totally stuck, or there's something not working right on the quest, please send me an IM“

This point where I was standing in the middle of nowhere at the top of the ski lift was END of a quest. Swell, now I had to find the beginning . I was directed to Simon Linden’s office in Linden village as the place to get the first clue and here is the address . http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Denby/211/36/33

I am not going to reveal anymore ... it is a hunt .. so I will leave you here in Denby at the office if you want to go follow the clues and get your bear. I got mine!

Now I want to find out if any other lindens are having quests for their bears. I will let you know. Maybe this is not new but it is new to me and maybe to you .

Eye on the Blog: Linden Lab Marks SL10B With Special Edition Bear Avatar

Linden Lab's involvement with SL9B was very little. For SL10B, as expected the Lab is leaving the celebration event to the residents. But this time they have a gift for the residents, and a contest involving the gift, which were announced in the Linden blog entry this week: "Celebrate a Decade of Second Life."

This month marks ten years since Second Life first opened to the public in June of 2003! We’re incredibly proud of Second Life’s success and longevity and we hope that all of you are too - it’s thanks to everyone who has made Second Life part of their lives over the past decade that we’ve reached this major milestone.

After the Valentine's Day blunder, one could be pardoned for thinking the Lab would be offering a paltry or unwanted gift. This time, the Lindens put a little thought, and humor, into their present for the residents. For the first eight birthdays, the Lindens offered a free teddy bear (the SL9B bear was made by Sway Dench). As it turns out, the Lab is offering an SL10B bear this year, but not a teddy bear. They're offering a bear avatar.

... you can get a free, special-edition SL10B avatar on the Marketplace. This avatar is made with some of the new Materials features and will look even better once that Materials Viewer launches (you can also check it out with the Materials Beta Viewer). Visit the SL10B Marketplace and get your commemorative avatar today - they’ll only be available until the end of June!

The past ten years have seen Bears play an important part of the Second Life experience. To pay homage and celebrate the history of this noble animal, we have created a limited edition SL10B Bear avatar that comes ready to have a good time!

The avatar is no teddy. It's a realistic-looking bear with teeth and claws. So did this ursine end up bombing? On the contrary, it's proven to be a hit with residents. The Marketplace page was offering one positive review after another, "Love the bear!" "Awesome!" "This bear changes accordingly with any shape you put on without glitching out."  "I have looked and bought most bear avatars and I can say this is one of the best I have seen so far, that it's free is great and the clothes are a separate option I like better."

Among those commenting was personality Crap Mariner, whom reacted by creating a Flickr page inviting people to add bear pictures to it, "Looking forward to seeing what fun folks have with it." And so far he's had a good response, with a number of people sending numerous picture of the avatar, often having fun. There were a couple of bears with guns (bear-ing arms?).

While not a complaint, there were a number of residents whom wished a female bear was available. SL reporter DrFran Babcock had a response of sorts by dolling up her bear av.

Besides the bear avatar, Linden Lab it also having a contest based on it.

We’re also kicking off an SL10B Snapshot Contest! Start snapping your celebratory images and get ready to share. Top prize is free use of a homestead for four months, and second and third prizes are free use of a homestead for two months.

The Lindens are offering a few other presents, baseball caps and T-shirts, both regular and mesh. But it's the bear that steals the show.

For the first time in two years, Linden Lab is getting some birthday cheers from the residents as they happily accept their present and aren't "em-bear-essed" to show their praise.

New "Direct Delivery" Linden Bear

When logging in, the link that appeared on my screen was about getting a Linden bear on Marketplace. Curious, the Linden bears popular as they are (even if the Lindens aren't), I look a look, and came across this page on the official offworld Second Life store.

Get this free limited-edition Linden Bear in celebration of the new, more efficient way to receive purchases from the Marketplace — not BOXED! The bear will be delivered to a new Received Items folder. Grab your free bear, find it in your Received Items folder, and get a notecard telling you more about the changes to the Marketplace.

For more information, see the updated Knowledge Base article on shopping in the Marketplace: http://bit.ly/ShoppingMarketplace.

And getting the bear and rezzing it, he appeared as in the picture, roasting marshmallows over older X-Street delivery boxes (the more recent ones were pictures of the product).

So if you want to add to your collection of Linden bears, Click Here (be inworld to get it).
