Cartoon of The Day: Getting A Head

Taken at The Relaystock. Dropping in on Trader Wiplash's set Sunday night on April 12, the lag was a bit heavy, so for a couple moments, he was just a head. It eventually cleared and he appeared normal, but not before I'd gotten this picture.

Relaystock Continues Today

The Relaystock got started yesterday, Friday April 10. The three day tribute to Woodstock lived up to the promise of music and mud, with performers playing music at the stage.

Among those playing the tunes were Trader Whiplash and Nuala Maracas of the Relay  Rockers, standing in for a performer that couldn't make it.

A number of teams have themed campsites. This includes the Sunbeamers, the team of the community where the Newser office makes it's home.

The Sunbeamers have a few items for sale for charity, including a virtual replica of the Victorian Era toilet by Thomas Crapper (yes, women could use it in those dresses).

On this second day of performanices, the schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30am – DJ Melina Firehawk
    Heroes Helping Heroes
  • 10:00am – DJ  Temptation
    VRaze Dreamers
  • 11:03am – DJ Starlight
    Team Darkpaws
  • 1:00pm – LIVE Eva Fae
    Seekers Of Hope
  • 2:00pm – Erika Ordinary
    Relay Rockers
  • 3:00pm – DJ  Kayla & The Roos
    Roos With A Dream
  • 4:30pm – DJ Hell

  • 6:00pm – DJ Cynthia Farshore

  • 7:30pm – DJ Castion Eyre

  • For those in the Sunweaver community, Club Cutlass will be closed tonight with those usually showing up Friday evenings asked to head to DJ Cynthia's set at the Relaystock.

Annoucement: T1 Radio 20th Anniversary Party Sunday June 29

T1RADIO CELEBRATES TWO DECADES ON AIR
Second Life’s First and Oldest Classic Rock Stream Turns 20
With A L$20,000 Loyal Listener Contest!

When Trader Whiplash learned of the plans to close La Vie en Rose and take Radio dAlliez off the air on June 18, 2005, he decided Second Life needed the venue to remain open. The manager of Alliez Mysterio’s club, located on Rue d’Alliez (one of the first private regions in SL), Trader, who was also head DJ and program manager for Radio dAlliez, decided to bring his own stream, T1Radio, on air full time and keep the club open.  Along with Nuala Maracas and later Madelyn Majestic they continued to provide an alternative to the electronic club mix music prevalent in Second Life’s earliest days.

T1Radio would grow into one of the best-known music streams in Second Life. T1 also became the sound of Relay For Life (from 2006 to 2024), the Spoonful Of Sugar Festival and several other mega-events.  Affectionately known as ‘The T’, it operates from LEGENDS Classic Rock in Arinultra Cay. (Itself one of the oldest continuously operated venues on the grid.)

To celebrate the milestone anniversary T1will be holding a Homecoming Party on Sunday June 29th. T1Radio listeners are invited to attend the event at LEGENDS and to bring their oldest snapshot or texture of themselves at a T1Radio event. The attendee who provides the OLDEST photo will win $L20,000.

To enter the contest simply find your oldest photo of yourself at La Vie en Rose, The Warehouse or Chaps, LEGENDS or any other T1 locales in Rue d’Alliez or Arinultra Cay or other T1Radio event. Take a Gyazo of the picture including the data found at the top, showing the SLURL and DATE and the “Properties” menu from Inventory. The picture must include your avatar and an easily identifiable T1Radio venue feature, signage or logo. Information on how to submit the Gyazo will be provided at the Party. You Must attend the event on June 29th to enter and be present at the time of the winner announcement to win.

Today, T1Radio continues to run 24/7, providing a music mix of Classic Rock, blues, pop, modern country and more. The On-Air Staff of Trader, Nuala, Madelyn Majestic, Fuzzball Ortega and Anni Braveheart host dance events each evening from 5pm to 7pm at LEGENDS in Arinultra Cay. You can also listen to the T by placing our stream URL, http://T1Radio.serverroom.us:8242/stream , on your SL property or in your browser, phone, smart speaker or other internet connected device.

Trader and Nuala and the entire air and production staff at T1Radio look forward to seeing all our friends, old as well as new, as we celebrate our 20th anniversary! We are sure there will be some great stories and reminiscences to share!

RFL Announcement: Relay Rockers Announce 2021 Event Dates

The Relay Rockers, RFL of SL’s oldest team, kicks off its 17th season by announcing the schedule for its signature fundraising events in support of the American Cancer Society.

The team will once again host the Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back (CRFB) Top DJ Competition, Bid Me Bald Team Challenge, Bid The Lindens Bald and the popular multi-team RelayStock.  The Rockers are also planning their Blues for Life, Hard Cure for the Cure and Country fair events.

The CRFB DJ Competition begins March 27 with preliminary rounds through April 24th. The competition is open to Club DJ and Radio Presenters who are challenged to raise funds for the Relay For Life during one hour sets.  The Top 4 competitors move on to the May 1st & 2nd semifinals rounds with the 2 remaining DJs performing in the Finals at RelayStock May 14, 15 & 16. The event, which has been held since 2012, has raised nearly L$10 million in support of the ACS. Entry forms will be available at the team website: https://relayrockers.org/ beginning on Feb 20th and is limited to the first 20 DJs to sign up.

The Bid Me Bald Team Challenge will be held April 9th through the 17th and is open to all Registered RFL of SL Teams.  Teams fund raise to “Keep Their Hair” with the last place team pledging to go bald until RFL 2021 Weekend, June 13 & 14. Teams share kiosks with the Relay Rockers during the event.

Bid The Lindens Bald will be held during the Rockers annual multi-team RelayStock weekend, May 14 -16.  Teams of Lindens and Moles compete to outraise each other and again the last place group pledges to ‘shave’ their heads until Relay weekend 2021.

Anyone interested in participating or attending Relay Rockers events can visit https://relayrockers.org/ for more information, sign ups and landmarks, when available.

    "Bernie Mittens" At The Relay

One of the latest memes to take the Internet by storm is that of a picture of Senator Bernie Sanders at the Presidential Inauguration a few days ago bundled up and wearing a pair of handmade mittens. They've been both a success for the Vermont woman who made them, and others have made a lot of use of them. For the Relay for Life in Second Life, Trader Whiplash and Stingray Raymaker have had a little fun with the meme as well, showing pictures of the bundled Bernie as a Relay supporter.

Bernie Sanders is a rare character in politics. In an era in which those on one party usually treated as vermin by supporters of the other, the Vermont Senator gets respect not just from other Democrats, but also Republicans as well. And of course the Relay is something both liberals and conservatives, as well as progressives and populists, can get behind.

"Hard Hat" Birthday Party at Arinultra Cay

On Sunday August 16, a party was held at the Arinultra Cay sim. The occasion, the real-life birthday of Nuala Maracas, one of the co-captains of the Relay Rockers team for the Relay for Life of Second Life.

Trader Whiplash-Ballinger, also of the Relay Rockers, DJed the music for the party. Hard hats were passed around, and there were a number of well-wishers from others in the Relay, such as some of the "Roos With a Dream" team whom danced in a line next to the birthday cake display.

The party was held in a pier in the middle of a lake, away from the beach. Trader would say that the sim had been undergoing some renovations, the "Legacy" club, which had been the club for T-1 Radio, being no more. During the terraforming of land a "Relay for Life Relic" was discovered some days ago and sent to the Relay museum.

So what will take the place of the "Legacy?" We'll likely know soon.

    Go Relay!

Addition: The new club will also be called "The Legacy." But it will be a brand new building.  The "Grand Re-Opening" party will be on Wednesday September 16

"RFL Relic" Found At Arinultra Cay

On Thursday August 14, Trader Whiplash-Ballinger (Trader1 Whiplash) was in the process of working on the club and boardwalk at Arinultra Cay, which involved moving both parts of the building and land. In the middle of the work, he made a surprising find. He found a Relay for Life bracelet, one made for it's very first season in 2005.  Overjoyed, he announced it to the Relay group.

[17:41] Trader Whiplash-Ballinger (Trader1 Whiplash): Just found a RFL Relic while terraforming as we redesign Arinultra CAy and Legends Classic Rock!  Its been buried on the sand for years!  https://gyazo.com/9df5a021b4a273d17e638d6afddc79e3
[17:42] Trader Whiplash-Ballinger (Trader1 Whiplash): Its a 2005 RFL Awareness Bracelet..   from the 1st RFL Weekend in SL
[17:42] Ʈɨρρɨ Ʈǿƹȿ Dąǥǥƹř ŦǿřƹȿɨǥɦƮ (Tippi Dagger): o wow
[17:42] Alexia Hykova: Archeologists will have a hell of a time if they start excavating in SL
[17:45] Trader Whiplash-Ballinger (Trader1 Whiplash): this was buried under the boardwalk
[17:48] Trader Whiplash-Ballinger (Trader1 Whiplash): Sending it to Kitty for the museum.

Alexia would joke, "Did you find a helicopter under the boardwalk by any chance? I know someone who's been looking for it for years." Trader would go on to invite everyone to the sim at 5PM on Sunday to celebrate fellow Relay Rocker teammate Nuala's real-life birthday, and witness the remainder of the old club blown up.

Multi-Team "Bid Me Bald" Event By Relay Rockers Ends

From Wednesday April 8 to Sunday April 19, the Relay Rockers hosted a multi-team "Bid Me Bald" event at Arinultra Cay. Finally on the last day at 4PM, the final totals were tallied.

    Relay For Christ L$41,857

    Relay Rockers L$20,000

    Cure Chasers L$17,660

    Cancer Gets Stung L$16,000

    Roos With A Dream L$13,161

    Mieville Steampunks L$11,912

    Heroes Helping Heroes L$11,000

    People Are Rainbows L$10,500

    Team Wishing Star   L$10,304

As Arizona Ballinger put it, "Woooot! Awesome 'Bid Me Bald Challenge' ending .... Total L $152,394." "Congrats Relay for Christ," Sienna Thor would add for the team that got the highest total.

The captain of Team Wishing Star was not around.  Arizona would say, "Team Wishing Star will be bald until June 6, 10am slt. Unfortunately she could not be here today due to illness. We will cut her hair on return." But not wanting to disappoint those who came for a haircut and shave, she took her place in the barber chair, with the team captain of Relay for Christ handed the scissors. One remarked, "Can Leelee be trusted with scissors? Or are we all in danger?" "Just hair, Leelee. no ears eyes or noses!" But Arizona took it in stride, "I never had a mermaid cut my hair before."

After the fact, as Arizona would say in group chat, "I stood in and Leelee cut my hair!  No band aids needed!" Nuala Maracas would comment, "Having a little mermaid floating around with scissors and doing a hair cut, it was touch and go on the band aids for a bit (laughter)."

While the multi-team Bid Me Bald is over, the Relay Rockers have another event soon, the Relaystock. This is another multiple team event, including Team Sunbeamers, that's a salute to the three day music festival in 1969.

The RFL "Bid Me Bald Game On, Cancer Team Challenge"

Today is the final day of the multi-team Relay event "Bid Me Bald Game On, Cancer Team Challenge." Taking place in Arinultra Cay and organized by the Relay Rockers, several teams are putting their virtual hair on the line as they compete to have Lindens donated into their kiosks there, and the team in last place goes bald. I had a few words with Trader Whiplash of the Rockers about the event, and he had a few things to say.

Christmas Expo Events End, Over Six Million Lindens Raised

Yesterday, Sunday December 15, was the last day of events at the Relay for Life's Christmas Expo. Among the last events was the Holidays of Hope Gala, which took place in an area high over one of the Relay sims. The party took place from 1 to 6 PM SL time, with the music provided by Madelyn Majestic for the first two hours, and Trader Whiplash for the last two. The hour in the middle was for "special guests Satin and Erin."

The fundraising goal of the organizers was five million Linden dollars. The event ended up exceeding their expectations. After the last events,a total of  6,013,534 Lindens have been raised. This amount will likely go up a little as people continue to buy items from shops and stalls.

This was the tenth Christmas Expo event in Second Life. It is unknown how much longer the sims will remain open, save the permanent American Cancer Society. They may come down today, or remain open until tomorrow or Wednesday. The 2020 Relay season itself will take place in about a few months.

    Trader Whiplash Diagnosed With Cancer

For one noted Relayer, Trader Whiplash of T1 Radio and the Relay Rockers team, the fight against cancer just turned personal. Yesterday on the Relay Rocker's blog, he announced he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer.

Now is the time when we say the ‘OMGs’ and ‘OH I’m so sorrys’ and ‘Oh I will Pray for Yous’ right?

    NO IT IS NOT

Now is when we as ACS Volunteers, who have grown from Cure Cancer Do Gooders of RFL 2005, turn into a vibrant and passionate Army who go forward armed with the tools and information that Saves Lives Celebrates Lives and Leads the Fight For a World Without Cancer.

Now is the time when we say We’ve got you back!

We’ve got a plan for this!

    We can Treat This!

    WE WILL BEAT THIS!

And that is just what my oncologist said this afternoon.  The man who has treated my leukemia for 16 years looked at me and said “OK, so make an appointment for Friday and lets get the pathology and figure out how we are going to beat this!”

And you know what.. That is just what I am going to do, what he is going to do and what we as a community are going to do.

And by God THAT is how We Cure Cancer!

In both the Relay for Life Volunteers group in Second Life and their Discord server, there were numerous well-wishes and words of encouragement for Trader. "You got this Trader!!!" "I think cancer got stupid and picked a fight with the wrong person." "Keep fighting cause your not alone."

At The Relay Rap, Relay Weekend

Before the Relay Weekend was officially underway yesterday, there was a special session of the Relay Rap, a broadcasted chat about the Relay for Life in Second Life by T-1 Radio and Trader Whiplash at 7AM. There were a few guests invited to speak, the Giant Snail Races organizer RacerX Gullwing, noted interviewer and informative machinima director Draxtor Despress, and yours truly SL Newser editor and head reporter Bixyl Shuftan

I was asked a few questions, such as a favorite early memory of the Relay for Life in Second Life. What stood out for me was my first good look at the Passionate Redheads team and it's Wild Wild West camp. T-1 Radio's location is in the sci-fi looking area of RFL Victory.

The Opening Ceremonies started at 10AM, and at 11 the Survivors/Caregivers lap, and 12:30 the team lap, and at 2PM the various themed laps. This included a "Game of Thrones" theme for the first time.

The Relay Weekend continues today, so be sure to come by if your computer can handle it.

Press Release: A Very Successful RelayStock 2019 Concludes

CRFB Finals and Bid Lindens Bald Raise more than L$1 Million

The 6th Annual RelayStock multi-team Relay For Life event concluded Wednesday with a solo performance by  the Tiny Maniac Band and the 3rd annual Bid The Lindens Bald fundraiser. The annual event hosted by the Relay Rockers, and sponsored by X-City Games, gathers RFL of SL teams for a weekend of ‘Peace, Love, Music and Hope”. Teams are provided prepared VW van and tent sites set on a 1960’s style outdoor music festival venue. RelayStock is organized by Rockers’ co-captain Arizona Ballinger and this year hosted more than 30 teams, who came together to celebrate the RFL season. Teams were also provided the opportunity to host 90 minute segments on the RelayStock stage and raise funds in their own kiosks.

RelayStock also host two of the Relay Rocker’s signature fundraising events: the CRFB Top DJ Fundraising Competition and Bid The Lindens Bald.

The weekend, which kicked off on Friday May 17, hosted live performances by Wild Eagle Tribute Band with MrMiKie String, Austin Moores, Todd Rumsford and Keeba Tammas and the Tiny Maniacs and more that a dozen DJs.  On Sunday afternoon the Relay Rockers concluded their 2019 Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back Top DJ Competition crowning Tril MacLeod as the 2019 CRFB Top DJ.

The 3rd Annual Bid The Lindens Bald fundraiser at RelayStock.  Five teams of Linden Lab from different departments put their virtual hair on the auction block with the team raising the least going bald in Second Life for 30 days. Teams were made up of nearly 30 members from Concierge Support, Tier 1 Support, Customer Account Operations, Land Operations, and Support Management. On Wednesday afternoon SL residents, along with dozens of Lindens with their distinctive blue tags and text, got to watch Governor Linden shave the hair of the members of the Tier 1 Support team. They will be bald in Second Life for the next 30 days.  Overall the event helped raise L$429,000 ($1716) to support the American Cancer Society.

The fundraising was shared by 3 RFL teams, the Cure Chasers, Roos With A Dream and The River of Life.  Earlier in the week, the Relay Rockers reached their season goal of raising $15,000 and decided to retire their own kiosks in favor of helping these three teams.  Rockers Captain and former RFL of SL Chair “We couldn’t have done it without these three terrific teams supporting us.” Nuala Maracas explained. “The CRFB Top DJ competition drew competitors from across SecondLife, including DJs affiliated with the River ( DJ Landy ) and the Roos (DJ Kayla Flow). These 2 competitors raised nearly L$800,000 ($3200) towards the Rockers fundraising goals. The Roos and Sienna Thor of the Cure Chasers were a constant presence throughout the competition, during RelayStock and at many RFL team events all across SL. The River hosted several CRFB events at their own venue and while the Rockers will continue to fundraise until the end of the season, we decided to recognize these 3 teams by retiring our kiosks and dedicating our remaining fundraisers, such as the Twisted Hunt, to these 3 passionate and supportive teams.”

The CRFB competition kicked off on March 30th with 15 DJs. Each competitor presented a 1 hour set of music while their supporters ‘voted’ for them by donating to a special kiosk set up for them by the Relay Rockers. The preliminary round, which raised L$ 1,050,081 ($4200) eliminated all but the top 4 djs.  DJ Landy ( L$ 102,773) DJ Kayla Flow (L$ 121,523) DJ Tazzie Tuque (L$ 145,000) and DJ Tril (L$ 302,600) qualified for the semi final rounds. Landy and Tril outlasted their challengers and moved on to the Finals.

The finals were held on May 19th on the RelayStock stage. Both presenters turned out large numbers of supporters forcing organizers to raise the region limit in order to accomodate the crowd. Following a short rainstorm which provided lots of mud for attendees to dance in at the front of the stage, Landy began his 90 minutes. His kiosk quickly rose, ultimately topping out at L$186,000, bringing his 3 show total to L$504,773  ($2019). Tril followed and it was obvious she came prepared to win top honors. Donations to her kiosk passed the L$300,000 level quickly and after just 40 minutes stood at more than L$500,000. Her final total was an amazing L$575,100 bringing her 3 show totals to L$1,183,184 ($4732). Overall the 2019 CRFB Top Dj Competition provided L$2,518,618 ($10,075) to help the American Cancer Society Save Lives, Celebrate Lives and Lead the Fight for a World Without Cancer.

Awards to all participants followed with special appreciation awards presented to host venues Junkyard Blues, The River, Greased Lightning, and EZRyder/Motorworld.  The Rockers also presented appreciation awards to the Roos With A Dream, The River of Life, Cure Chasers, X-City Games and the Headhunters MC for their support.

The weekend concluded with Relay Rocker co-founder and T1Radio DJ Trader Whiplash playing music from Woodstock as Relayers danced in the mud and celebrated late into the evening.

The Rockers wish to thank Linden Lab, X-City Games, all of our CRFB Competitors and their supporters, They also want to thank the 100’s of Relayers and Second Life residents who turn out each year for 3 Days of Peace, Love, Music & Hope at RelayStock.

    Peace
