The Relay Weekend: Part Two

Sunday June 11 was day two of the Relay Weekend. In the wee hours of the morning, there were fewer people walking the track, but there were still plenty.

And of all shapes and sizes.

9AM was the "Floating to The Finish Line" lap, with rubber duckies.

Some people flew rather than floated.

At 10 AM were the Closing Ceremonies, which Cynthia Farshore of the Sunbeamers attended in the team balloon.

The Comittee had a few words to the crowd at the stage, and to those listening from elsewhere (video).

Which included the empty chair ceremony, to remember those who did not survive their fight against cancer.

Then came the Victory Lap, in which teams and individuals would make one more lap.

On American Cancer Society 3, there was the "Don't Wanna Go Home Party," that went on for some hours.

It was quite a Relay Weekend. But it's not the end of the Relay Track. Teams were asked not to pick up their builds yet, as cleanup wasn't until Thursday. So people have until Wednesday to see the camps. As for the Relay season, while most teams stop their fundraising events, the season won't end until July with the "Relay Wrap-Up" party.

Wedding Bells

On Thursday February 16, Chuul.King (ChuulKing Resident) and Sophitia.Queen (SophitiaEqui Resident) exchanged vows at a virtual wedding. While the Newser has covered weddings before, it's uncommon that the groom is a human and the bride is a furry.

Before the event, the groomsmen and bridesmaids were in separate rooms, but still able to talk to one another through extended chat. At one point, one of the girls showed the others a picture of the five of them she had taken, then "Oops, Chuul don't open that! (I) forgot the guys would see it too," her thinking of the tradition of the groom not seeing the bride on the day of the wedding before the ceremony. There were jokes about having Sophita casting kobol magic to make him forget the image. But Chuul responded, "No magic could make me forget you, Love."

The ceremony was conducted by Lance Horsley, "We are here today as the result of the love that Sophi and Chuul have found with each other and this ceremony is the joining together of their two hearts and souls in marriage. ,,, Is there anyone present here that knows of any reason why  Sophi and Chuul may not be joined together in marriage? No? Excellent. Then we will proceed ..."

Lance Horsley: Sophi do you take Chuul to be your lawfully wedded husband? To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and not so good times, for richer or poorer, keeping yourself unto him for as long as you both shall live?

SophitiaEqui Resident: I do.

Lance Horsley: And Chuul do you take Sophi to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and not so good times, for richer or poorer, keeping yourself unto him for as long as you both shall live?

Chuul.King (ChuulKing Resident): I do.

The pair then exchanged rings.

Lance Horsley: Before these witnesses, you have pledged your love and to be joined in marriage. You have now sealed this pledge with your wedding rings. By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you Husband and Wife. ... Congratulations to you both. Chuul you may now kiss your bride! Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my great pleasure to present to you Mr King and Mrs Queen."

Following the ceremony was the reception, with dancing and dinner. And of course the throwing of the boquet, which was caught by Luna Sakurano (LunaSakurano Resident).

Chuul and Sophita can occasionally be found at Club Cutlass and the Happy Vixen. While Sophita has several avatars, she's best known for her kobold.

Wedding Bells

 *

Yesterday, Monday June 18, was a happy occasion for the Sunweavers. It was the wedding of ღ Sнίηƴ Wнίϯє ƊƦαɢσɴ ღ (ShinyWhiteDragon Resident), a longtime regular at Club Cutlass, and LilyBethPatterson Resident.

The wedding took place at the Maven Estates, and was well-attended.

Some of Shiny's dracomic friends were there, two taking the groom then bride to the altar.

Afterwards, they headed to the after-wedding party, which was at the Happy Vixen. DJ Khyra (aka the Dazzlecat DJ) and hostess Ana played the tunes to an audience of about forty humans, furs, dragons, and tinies.

Congratulations Shiny and Lily, and may your Second Lives be happy together,

Wedding in The Deathlands

As a post-apocalyptic region that describes everyday life as a struggle to survive, one wouldn't expect the Deadlands to be the scene of a wedding. But it was. Rebel Wolf, the local baron, recently announced the place's first wedding. The Newser asked him how it went about.

A number of events have happened at the new continent from car shows to boat races, and of course music and dance parties. But what about weddings? Gemma Cleanslate came across the ceremony of Red Daidig and Ravyen Woodward, a couple that had taken their relationship to real life, and were marrying in Second Life as well. Patch Linden was also there, not as a guest but as the one leading the ceremony.

Scenes From The Relay: Lantern Release Ceremony

The Relay for Life is usually a fun time for all. But there are occasional reminders of the seriousness of why the fundraiser exists. At the Home and Garden Expo, there's been a daily lantern release ceremony, every day at 4PM. It's suggested those watching set their viewers to Midnight.

In the ceremony, many dozens, well over a hundred, of paper lanterns slowly float up into the air, illuminating the sky. The lanterns represent friends and loved ones lost to cancer. The time I watched the ceremony with several other relayers, one talked about how his grandfather had taught him how to make his own paper. We each reflected on those we knew whom had passed away from the illness, and hoped that someday soon, there would be a cure for all forms of it.

"Welcome Home Rangers" Ceremony at Burn2

With everything that was happening on Saturday, I only had a short time to visit Burn2. And most of what I saw, Klaus Bereznyak described in his story. I did notice a few out of the ordinary avatars, such as a nine-tailed kitsune. Hopefully that was an omen of good luck. But I also stumbled across a ceremony conducted amongst the Rangers of Burn2.

"Welcome Rangers," Leondra Larsson told the others, "I first want to say how much I enjoyed training and learning with each of you. I first want to say how much I enjoyed training and learning with each of you. You are special. You have answered the call. You have trained and you are ready. This past year at Burning Man marked the 25th anniversary of the Rebar Ceremony. In mirroring that ritual, I am honoring the Black Rock Rangers and the BURN2 Rangers".

"I am going to draw a line on the Playa," Leondra told them. "On the other side of this line, everything will be different. I am going to do that now. ... See it?" People hesitated to answer at first, then were saying they could. Leondra continued, "All step up to that line. Magic of SL, it can be bigger (smile). What you serve is the community. Please, Rangers of the class of 2017 cross this line." And they did, "Rangers stepping up."

Leondra went on, "Now brother and sister Rangers of former years, cross this line with me,  and join our new Rangers. ... What we make out of this is up to us. May we serve with kindness, empathy, and helpfulness. May we be the embodiment of the 10 Principles and be viewed as helpers of the community." "And do a whole lot of nothing this week," Miss Suzanne Super Sweet (SuperSuz Resident) quipped.

"Welcome home Rangers"

After that and a few more lines, and a picture taken, the rangers split up to go to different places around the Burn2 grounds.

Lantern Release Ceremony At The RFL Home And Garden Expo

The Home and Garden Expo is taking place in Second Life. Among the events there is the Lantern Release Ceremony. It takes place every day at 4PM at the Hope 5 sim. At the start of the event virtual replicas of Asian lanterns are released into the air, in remembrance of friends and loved ones whom have been lost.

Saffia Widdershins, who invited me to the event, told me, "These lanterns were created especially for the Home and Garden Expo about seven years ago, by Alchemy Immortalis. We started the tradition of releasing them then, and ever since, every day at Expo, we have the lantern release ceremony."

The ceremony ends with a sunrise, a reminder that tomorrow is another day, and of new beginnings.

For more on the ceremony, check the RFL Home and Expo blog. To head to the Expo, head to http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Hope%201/128/123/23 .
