Happy Flag Day: The World Peace Flag Garden

In the United States, it is Flag Day in the United States. There are some flag stores in Second Life. But there is also a place where one can get flags, and flag-themed clothes, for free. They're at the World Peace Flag Garden in the Odaesan sim.

Free  flags of all nations.  Hand-held, modifiable for your build.  Free patriotic swim trunks, gym shorts, speedos, shirts.  Camping for world peace.  In Second Life, good people of all nations meet in friendship.

The place has flags of just about every nation in the world, including a few places not officially recognized as countries. They are grouped by continent. There's also boxes where you can get flags of American states and Canadian provinces, some American cities. You can also get the Confederate and Pride flags. Many of the country flags come with themed items of clothing, such as caps, jackets, and swimsuits.

The Flag Garden is owned by Edd Thor, who also has the Thor's Oak Christian Men's Center next door.

WW2 Memorial

Today is the 79th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion of World War Two, also known as Operation Overlord, on June 6, 1944. Well over a hundred and fifty thousand American, British, and Canadian soldiers stormed five beaches on the coast of Normandy France, Omaha Beach being the most heavily defended, following the dropping of paratroopers over the interior. The Allies would suffer over 10,000 casualties including over 4,000 dead. Germany would loose up to 9000 dead, captured, or missing. The successful invasion and the liberation of France over the summer would help ensure the defeat of Nazi Germany less than a year later.

At the World War 2 sim, there is a memorial, the World War 2 Campus - Memorial Garden. While the sim itself serves a variety of roles, including a shop area with "a variety of World War II-themed merchandise," the purpose of the memorial garden is a serious one, "a serene and contemplative Memorial Garden, where you can reflect and pay your respects to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives during World War II. It is a place of solemnity and remembrance, and we kindly ask that you maintain an atmosphere of reverence while visiting this area."

Home and Garden Expo Raises Over $14,700 USD

The first of this year's Relay mega-events, the Home and Garden Expo, was a success. Over the course of the Expo, more than $14,711 US dollars worth of Lindens was raised

The 2022 Home & Garden Expo closed last week with a $14,711 USD in total donations - all going to fund the mission of the American Cancer Society. With 9 regions filled with exhibitors and a stage that featured multiple performers, the Expo gives the home and garden community in Second Life a chance to fight back against cancer in their own way. This event is the longest actively running event of its kind in the history of Second Life. Under Kaerri Rae’s guidance, the Expo has experienced a resurgence of activity and interest over the years.

But Kaerri Rae will not be directing things next year. Near the conclusion, she announced she would be stepping down as the Expo's coordinator.

It is with mixed emotions that i am announcing my retirement from the Home & Garden Expo organizing team.

It has been a pleasure working with you all over the last seven years but it is time to go and do other things for me now. (like possibly even make some new stuff for my store).

Good luck and thank you all for all generosity you have shown over the years.

* * * * *

At the end of the Expo, Kaerri announced her retirement as the Home & Garden Expo’s coordinator and is ready to enjoy some much deserved personal time. “We are grateful for Kaerri’s commitment for so many years and we know that there will never be anyone quite like her,” says Stingray Raymaker, Director of the American Cancer Society in Second Life. Each year, Kaerri worked hard to improve areas of the Expo and connect its patrons to the mission of the American Cancer Society.

Being the coordinator of an event this size is no small undertaking. It requires countless hours of planning and organizing ideas and people over the course of many months. Like all of our mega event coordinators, Kaerri volunteered her time to this community and this event for so many years, never seeming to take a break. Stingray added, “When Kaerri messaged me to tell me that she’d decided that this would be her final year as the H&G Expo Coordinator, she assured me that she’d still be involved in the future because the cause and the community mean so much to her.”

Stingray would add this comment in Discord.

As the Director of the ACS in SL, I want to thank everyone involved in the Home & Garden Expo this year, and I'd like to thank you all for helping to raise over $14k usd this year...and thank you to Kaerri for her leadership all these years. I'm sure you all have already done so in your own way, but in case you havent, feel free to send Kaerri a quick thank you for coordinating the HG Expo for so many years.

Ms. Orchide Delmar's Love and Harmony Jazz Club

Our newest reporter, Dancerina Starlight, today writes about a classy venue: the Love and Harmony Jazz Club. Owned and run by Ms. Orchide Delmar, the place spends no small amount of detail in it's ballroom, gardens, restaurant area, and other areas. The place was designed for both occasional dates by couples and for weddings. So what works best for Love and Harmony?

Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "Urban Agriculture And Sustainable Food"

"Urban Agriculture And Sustainable Food"

Saturday December 19,

10 AM to 11 AM SL time

Urban agriculture and sustainable food: field trip to a Second Life backyard food garden with Delia Lake

UN Sustainable Development Goal #2 is Zero Hunger, yet worldwide, hunger is increasing.

  • Getting fresh food to people with little waste and reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs)
  • Food – one of the essentials for life.
  • Over 4 B people worldwide and growing live in urban areas.
  • 1/3 of food produced worldwide is wasted, with people in affluent countries wasting even more, while almost 1 B people experiencing food insecurity.

Most food is produced far away from where it is eaten and is transported to us. All told, it’s estimated that it takes about 10 kcal of energy for every 1 kcal of food we get.

Can we get fresh food to people with little waste and reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs)? Yes, we could grow a significant portion of our food in or near urban areas where most people eat it, but as Joni Mitchell said it in Big Yellow Taxi (1970). “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone? They paved paradise, put up a parking lot.”

There is a nascent and growing movement toward urban and suburban farming. I have been growing vegetables in real-life urban environments for decades, and in SL since 2008. On this Second Life field trip we’ll explore a few ways that each of us might advance urban farming in our solid lives.

Organizer: Linda M. Kelley

World Peace Flag Garden

This Fourth of July, there are a number of places one can get an American flag. But there's one that not only allows you to get one for free, but also flags of most of the nations of the world, each of the fifty United States, Canada's provinces, and some international and movement flags. It's the World Peace Flag Garden, and it offers them for free.

Free  flags of all nations.  Hand-held, modifiable for your build.  Free patriotic swim trunks, gym shorts, speedos, shirts.  Camping for world peace.  In Second Life, good people of all nations meet in friendship.

Most every nation is represented here. There's also flags for a number of territories and islands. Some places in the news in recent years, such as Kosovo and Hong Kong, are represented. Some are not recognized by all, such as Taiwan and Northern Cypress. And there's Nepal's double-triangle. There's also a box with a modifiable flag and various textures of American Indian flags. Another box has various "Pride" flags.

The place is owned by Edd Thor, whom also owns the Thor's Oak Christian Men's Center (aka Men's Recreation Center and Chapel) next to it. There, one can pick up some free clothes, skins, and jewelry.

The Tarot Garden Offers 22 Days of Winter Gifts

In August, Gemma Cleanslate covered the opening of the Tarot Garden in LEA17. Late in the month, the exhibit will close. But before it does, you can drop in for some gifts. Every day until the 22nd, the exhibit will be offering a new item by one of the sculptures. Klaus Bereznyak writes about these parting presents to the art lovers who come by.

The Tarot Garden

Gemma Cleanslate's latest trip to the Linden Endowment of the Arts regions took her to LEA 17 where she found something that got her attention: the Tarot Garden. Built by Secondhandtutti, the exhibit is based on a real life sculpture display in Naples Italy by Niki de Saint Phalle. Gemma had a look around the place, and a few words with the artist.

The Garden of Absentia To Close

Usually it's a great thing to find out about a well-done sim. But if you find out the place will soon be gone, the joy is mixed with some sadness. I was recently told about the Garden of Absentia, made by Filo Tani and Sage Allegiere. But after a decade, the sim will soon be going away. So I went there and took a look around.

Cartoon of the Day

Taken at the "Afternoon With The Lindens" at The Castle Home and Garden. Looks like Tommy Linden is trying out the different positions on the kissing booth. At least it'll save his avatar a trip to the chiropractor.

More On The Castle Home and Garden Contest

By Gemma Cleanslate

I am having a wonderful time helping out at the Castle Home and Garden Contest! I am really glad I am not a judge!! So many beautiful builds grace the sims. Walking in the gardens of winter, summer and underwater is great fun.

Here are a few pictures of the gardens and castle details you will see .

Climbing around in the castles  looking for hidden rooms can be very interesting. Since the event takes place on two levels the TP pads are helpful for moving from sim to sim. There is a hunt going on as you move through the shops and lots of goodies for sale.

The main stage has events every day and you can find the times here.  http://chgrfl.org/schedule/
The live music has been so enjoyable and the visitors are loving it!

This is the landing point at the main stage where you can pick up the guide book and find the tp pad to all the sims take a look at the maps there too showing the two levels.

Castle and Home and Garden Contest Opens

Yesterday, the Relay for Life spinoff event, the Castle, Home, and Garden Contest, officially began. Although taking place a little late this year, with it's time being after the Relay Weekend this means the event will get a little more attention from Relayers who miss the excitement and fun from earlier this month.
