Happy Birthday US Marines

 *

Wednesday November 10 was the anniversary of the founding of the US Marines, 246 years since the founding of the Continental Marines in 1775 (July 11, 1798 was when they were re-founded under the Federal Government). To celebrate, the Veterans Tribute held a party in their honor, with a number of residents whom were Marine veterans present.

The 15th Annual Second Life Veteran's Tribute requests your presence in joining us as we celebrate 246 years of the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS with a formal ball.  The ball is open to both military and civilians.

DJ Huntyr played the music from 5 to 7 PM.From 7 to 10 PM, the music was DJed by Flattop Ewing.  A benediction was done by Samson Rowley.

There was a cake in the corner. There was also a present giver that when clicked would offer a package. When unpacked, the person would get a Marine-themed bracelet.

This is far from the last of the Veterans Tribute events. Today, there are eight hours of events planned there from 2 to 10 PM.

The Flag Factory

With Canada Day and the Fourth of July just around the corner, Residents from the United States and Canada may want to get a flag to help celebrate. While you could shop around on Marketplace, one place inworld you can get on is the Flag Factory at the Made in Paris sim.

Dropping in, one will be surrounded by banners of many kinds. The store boasts, "More than 400 countries and topics with 14 styles of flagpoles : hand-held to huge." The sizes most vendors offer are 4m 10m 23m, hand-held, and "street." There are also "conference" and "ultimate" packs one can purchase for extra cash. The ones of the latter two for the United States are showcased with their own vendors. Besides the standard US flag, one can also get a weathered "Old Glory" or a combination US and Texas flag. The store also offers a Canada and Quebec flag combination. I was told that the store is offering hand-held US flags for a limited time.

There are flags of just about every nation on the planet, and for individual US states, Canadian provinces, and French localities. There are also flags for holidays, flags for personalities such as Michael Jackson and Nelson Mandela, pirate flags, gay pride flags, even a gay pirate flag, castle flags, and more.

Some residents may recall the controversy about the Confederate flag a couple years ago. While it has been largely taken down from Marketplace, one can buy it here. However, I couldn't help but notice where it was placed, right next to the Cuban and Venezuelan flags, two countries with noble people, but repressive governments. Perhaps coincidence. Perhaps a subtle statement of some kind.

Hurricane Mathew Threatens US East Coast

Some residents of Second Life are finding real life will likely cut off their connection for a while. Hurricane Mathew, a storm that delivered death and destruction in Haiti and the Bahamas, is heading to Florida as a highly dangerous Category Four hurricane, making impact there today. But instead of making landfall there, it looks like it will brush the East Coast that while slowly lessening in strength will still be destructive. Evacuations are already being ordered in Georgia, and North and South Carolina have declared emergencies.

For Second Life residents in the storm's path, a likely consequence is the cutoff of electric power, and being cut off from Second Life/ Already at least one DJ living in Florida sent a notice to the clubs she performs at that she will be offline indefinitely due to the certain loss of power.

As a few of the Newser's writers live in areas likely to be affected by the storm, there is a chance stories could be delayed, possibly updates in general to the Newser as yours truly the editor is among them. So for now, it's wait and see, making sure there's enough emergency supplies on hand, and taking any calls to evacuate seriously.

Winter Storm May Offline Residents

In the weather news, a large storm has hit much of the northeastern and east-central part of the US. This may mean some residents may be temporarily knocked offline. If so, hopefully the damage to the power lines will be fixed soon. Another example about how offline inconveniences impact Second Life.

Happy Fourth of July

It's Independence Day in the United States, and once again the Elizabeth Town sim has brought back "Summertown USA." Read more about the place in our 2013 article. Note: not everything from last year is necessarily there this time.

In Relay DAlliez, the Relayers have set up the sim as a Fourth of July celebration, with the four corners of the sim having a different look.

In the Southwest, people can party in the shadow of a Statue of Liberty build.

When I got there, the DJ herself was sporting a Lady Liberty avatar

In the southeast is a build of the Washington Monument

In the northwest of the sim is an aircraft carrier by the dock. Other nations have carriers, but no one else has the number the United States does. This one offers 7Seas fishing and a bumper boat area.

The northeast corner of Relay dAlliez has a DJ booth in the shadow of a Mount Rushmore build, a replica of the famous monument to four American Presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

There were some red, white and blue goodies to be found. I found a red white and blue straw hat.. This girl found some strawberry, creme, and blueberry treats.

Among those there was Gemma Cleanslate, in a red, white, and blue dress.

Have a happy Fourth of July everyone.

The Fourth of July

Looking for those flags and banners for July 4? USA is commemorating its Birthday which occurred in 1776 when we became a free nation. To celebrate in real-life, there will be parades, picnics and lots of fireworks! Flags will be raised high and banners across the roads. We in the US call it the Fourth of July.

To celebrate in SL, you need some decor. Vickijo Rivera had her creators gather some wonderful flags and balloons and other decor at the Corner of Revolving time for you. They are all free! Just take a trip over to Ophelia sim and grab them. Look for this cute picnic blanket on the lawn. Take a look inside too at the other decor you might like to grab.

While you are there take a walk to the amusement park next door and have some fun! You can also go fishing if you have time. http://slurl.com/secondlife/DreamSeeker%20SL9B%20Devet/255/81/21
