Looking Back: The Sunbeamers At Relaystock (2024)

It's been a sad time for those in the Sunweaver community. With the passing of Rita Mariner, we naturally look back at happier times, including yours truly. One of the things we took pride in was our efforts to raise money for the Relay for Life in Second Life as Team Sunbeamers. And one of the activities we did every year was taking part in the Relaystock. Sadly, both the Relay Rockers, the team that organized the Relaystock, and Team Sunbeamers, are gone. But we can look back on the memories. A couple years ago, I would write an in-depth article of just went on while the girls danced on stage for an hour, while one guy would live up to a couple bets with mildly embarrassing but funny results.

The Sunbeamers At Relaystock

Yesterday on June 30, the Relay for Life's fundraising season for 2024 came to a close. Among the teams taking part were the Sunbeamers, which ended at Ruby level and eleventh place. The team had taken part in a number of events to raise money. Among them was the Relaystock in mid-May, a tribute to the noted three day rock music festival in 1969. DJ Cynthia would head a band of dancers on stage. So how well did they do?

Sunbeamer Moon Dance

A slight "oops" on our part.

While the Sunbeamer Moon Dance has been going on every week this spring, we didn't include it in SL Clubbin' as it wasn't at an actual club. A couple readers have requested we "make it so." And so we'll be listing the Sunnie's weekly dance on the lunar surface as part of SL Clubbin', at least until the Relay Weekend after which the Moon Cannon goes silent, until next February.

Go Relay!

A Sunweaver Christmas Miracle: Fundraisers Save Home From Foreclosure

On Friday December 23, there was a fundraiser event at Club Cutlass. The usual two hour Friday night event was turned into a six-hour marathon as five DJs played music to the crowd. A few days before, Perri Prinz had come forward saying she and her partner Recoyote Mindes were facing a real-life eviction due to their landlord both raising the rate and moving up the date of their next payment from the middle of January just after after Rec's paycheck would come in to the first, and they had exhausted their savings.

Tonight we are having the Battle of the DJ's benefit for Reco and Perri, if you can't make it here, please drop what you can here!  https://paypal.me/RECoyote

The final idea was for a "Battle of the DJs" going from 4 PM SL time to 10 PM, with six tip jars placed just in front of the DJ booth, and the dance poles beside it. Five were for the DJs, the six for Perri Prinz where people could donate to her any time. To avoid taking a cut when buying Linden dollars, there was also the option to donate directly to Rec via Paypal. The five DJs taking part were Alexandra Tymets, Mattie Carlton,  Snowy HunniBunni Lefavre (Skylark Lefavre), Cynthia Farshore, and Perri Prinz herself.

There were a few issues, miscommunications, and snags along the way, which was no surprise as there were just a few days to get everything ready. Paypal itself was also an issue as they had supposedly enacted a rule in which they could heavily fine users for posting "misinformation" online, and hours later revoked it. But with the home of a neighbor at stake, the event went through.

DJ Lexi started things off at 4 PM SL time. Next at 5 PM was DJ Mattie. At 6PM was DJ Snowy, playing at her usual time slot. at 8 PM was DJ Cynthia. And DJ Perri closed things off at 9 PM. The themes for each set were Christmas, or some variation of it such as "Country Christmas" or "Rockin' Christmas." Club owner Rita Maniner would put prizes of 1000L on each of the two boards for each set, one session getting 2000L. But winners would usually donate all or part of their winnings to Perri's jar, as well as the DJs donating what they were tipped.

By 10 PM, a little over 76,000 Lindens had been raised at the Cutlass fundraiser. This was a little more than $300 USD before the Lab would take a cut. By itself, this was less than half of the $860 USD needed. But people also sent in money through Paypal, including one who wished to remain anonymous who told me he sent $500, which Perri confirmed. "Yes we did," Perri answered when asked if enough had been raised, "My poor math skills put the total at $1,435.77." This was much more than what was needed. Perri told me she would likely use the extra money to help with future medical expenses.

Once again the Sunweavers came through, and demonstrated the good that virtual worlds can accomplish.

Addition: Perri won the "Battle of the DJs," followed by Mattie, then Snowy.

Sunbeamers At The Relaystock

The Relaystock was good news to many teams. It's organizers the Relay Rockers hit Purple level, and many others went up a fundraising level, such as Meli's Maniacs, Seekers of Hope, Team Invictus, Roos With a Dream, and others. While the Sunbeamers didn't get step up from their current level, Jade, they did make some good progress on it.

DJ Cynthia's event at the Relaystock stage was Saturday May 15 from 5:30 to 7PM. She shared the stage with several other "beamers" such as Shockwave and team captain Rita Mariner. She ended up raising almost 40,000 Lindens in the two kiosks on the stage. The following evening, Sunday May 16, DJ Matt was the closing act at 7:30 PM. Her event would raise several thousand at the stage kiosk. But people would donated at other Sunbeamer kiosks that night, and after the event continue to donate. By Monday, the Sunbeamer's total had gone up to over 640,000 Lindens.

The awards for the CRFB DJ competition were also given out that night. DJ Mattie would get the fourth place trophy for when she took part in on April 13, raising over 110,000 Lindens for the Relay Rockers.

As of the writing of this article the team has raised a total of over  678,000 Linden dollars. With the Sunbeamer Medieval Festival this weekend, the total promises to go higher.

 Go Snowbeamers! Go Relay!

Happy New Year Second Life

As the hours ticked away on the last day of 2014, various places in Second Life celebrated the arrival of the new year. For some such as Bay City, they rung it in a big way with a tower drop. Other places, such as Club Cutlass, had more local events.

New Year's Eve Party Tonight at Club Zero Gravity

Second Life's noted space station club, Club Zero Gravity, "the party among the stars"
will be having a New Years Party, which will go on as the famous ball over Times Square drops down it's pole.

Tonight marks the end of 2013, and as Times Square New York gets ready to drop the ball, Club Zero Gravity throws it's New Year's Eve Party. Dress up in something formal, black tie for the gents or dresses for the girls. Or perhaps dress as either Father Time or Baby New Year.

Cynthia Farshore will be DJing for the event. Last year, she was the DJ for Little Dove's New Year's Ball.

The event will start at 6PM SL time, and go on for as long as people keep dancing.

Purrfection Estates (232, 35, 3340)

Club Zero Gravity is owned by White Vixen Enterprises.

This Week at the Sunweaver and Angels Clubs

DJ Cynthia Farshore at Club Zero Gavity's Military Night. Earlier in the week, the club had a Police and Firefighter's theme in honor of the first responders on Sept 11th, and then it was the turn for those in the armed forces. Cynthia played a number of military-themed songs, starting with one composed at the time of the American Revolution and a few from the Civil War such as "Goober Peas." There were a few from the Second World War, such as "Der Fuhrer's Face." And later in the party were ones from the "War of Terror," such as "Al Qaeda," a parody sung to the tune of "Elvira," and "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue."

Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage:
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage.
An' you'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A.
'Cos we'll put a boot in your a**,  it's the American way.

Club Zero Gravity has events on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 PM at the Purrfection Estates, (232, 35, 3340)

After some months in hiatus, Club Little Dove was back in business. The Zeppelin club flies high over Sunweaver Bay, offering a few events a week in the evening, usually at 8PM, and some games between events. Here, DJ Yulia (center) performs with a few of the crowd around her.

Sunweaver Bay (130/137/77)

In contrast to Club Zero Gravity, Club Cutlass' events this week were more lighthearted. Here's club owner Jenni Greenfield as a "Pink Beret" bunny at the "Pretty in Pink" party, which naturally had mostly females dressing in theme. DJ Shockwave was performing that night. Because a few males dressed in theme, we couldn't show a pic of the crowd without embarrassing them.

Club Cutlass is over a hundred meters high in the Sunweaver Space sim at (176, 62, 125).

Reader Submitted: "When the Reporter's AFK"

"Be careful where you go "Away From Keyboard" we residents remind ourselves, as you never know what some wag might do. Well, one night while at Club Cutlass, I had a minor emergency that couldn't wait. And when coming back, Zorro Wuramunga had sent me this picture, which he also put on his page.

And then there was this one by Cynthia Farshore.

Zorro's known at Cutlass as "The Fisher Fox," noted for his devotion to fishing and crabbing games, even while on the dancepole. His antics have also gotten him in the Newser's cartoons time to time, such as here and here.  Cynthia's a DJ who plays at Cutlass and other clubs, who's appeared in the cartoons as well, such as here and here. So perhaps a little payback was deserved.

And I'll be on the lookout for more cartoon material from Zorro's antics.

Club Cutlass Goes Poof

Cyanthia Farshore sent me this picture of Club Cutlass during their Wednesday party, or rather what was left of it after a mishap. The dance floor was still there, but the walls and much of the place just vanished.

In addition to the picture, someone else sent me a short segment of the chat there when Nydia Tungsten showed up to help take care of the mess.

Cynthia Farshore: powder room accident
Nova Manadragon: Huricane Rita hit the club, that's what
Nova Manadragon: took half of it away
Nydia Tungsten: Damn Rita...what did you DO in the powder room to make the walls dissolve?
Nydia Tungsten: o-0
Cynthia Farshore: I guess some of it was not locked so delete struck
Sha: Bless you Nydia :)
Rita Mariner: You know, burritos and a good (windbreaking)!

What probably happened, Nydia later told me, was that the sim the club was in was overloaded with prims, and something had to give. Eventually, the club was restored, but it took returning a number of items to one parcel owner whom had exceeded his allotment.

Club Nights

Wednesday night this week at Cutlass was it's "Dungeons and Dragons" night, with DJ Cynthia playing music to the costumed crowd. Among the adventurers was a Beholder, and of course a dragon.

Cutlass events are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 6-8 PM SL time, Sunweaver Space (245, 88, 123)

The following night at Club Zero Gravity was it's Comedy Night, with people dressing up in clown outfits, clown noses, cartoonish avatars, and one laughing hyena. And whom better to play the music than DJ Shockwave, whom entertained the dancers with songs from Ray Stevens, Weird Al, and a few of his own music parodies.

Zero-G events are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8PM SL time, Purrfection Estates (229, 11, 3365)

And Friday night was the Steelhead dance, this time on a floating platform held up by balloons. DJ Fuzzball, whom danced away with his partner Eugine, held the event in honor of Amelia Airheart, whose birthday it was.

Friday Night at Steelhead takes place at 7PM, but the location can vary.
