 Taken at the Relay Weekend. Some of the time, I went on horseback. And well, when I did the "walk of lag" into past the sim border and into the unrezzed area, it looked like the horsie was walking over water.

New Genisis Bay Riding Sim

 

There are a number of racetracks around Second Life, including some three-dimensional ones that would hardly be possible in real life, twisting up and down. Some are fairly long and take a little time to go from start to finish. But at the Kinder der Nacht sim, I saw a track that is REALLY long. It bills itself as 25 segments high, and needing an hour to finish. And having lost track of time and distance when trying it out, it measures up to it's claims. And it's not just the length that distinguishes it, but the variety of scenery from urban to countryside to something out of the imagination. So just what was the experience like?

A New Intercontinental Route for Pod Riders

While some residents are content to remain in their own small corner of the Grid, others like to explore around. One way residents can do so on the Second Life Mainland are the Yava Script Pods. An automated form of transportation, all a resident has to do is hop on, adjust the speed to allow everything to rezz, then sit back and enjoy the ride. Pod routes exist on several continents. Klaus Bereznyak recently found out that there's a new route that was recently made between the station on the Corfeld sim station on Corsica and the DeMorgan sim station on Gaeta V. He decided to check it out.

From Lady Digs Jewel (1x1x141 Digfoot): "I've had more positive than negative in dealing with LL. Riding sims are tricky to manage. But I did have a Linden from live chat ride on the back of my motorcycle for 2 hours for the ride up one sim and down the other with 20 members of the MC in tow. .. all the while me MC pres was skeptical about her ability and want to do anything ... and LL switched the sims to the Le Tigre server thanks to me being stubborn and working with Madori. .... I had her ride with me and she saw what was going on the sims. Without her concentrating on the navigation, she was able to concentrate on what the numbers were doing on the sim."

Firestorm's Seventh Anniversary Gift Fire Mule

It was September 3, 2010 that Team Phoenix, later renamed Team Firestorm, was formed. They had come about as the result of the "Emeraldgate" controversy, which soon led to the removal of the Emerald Viewer. On Saturday September 9, Team Firestorm had their anniversary party. Besides two live music performers, there was also a gift available: a rideable pet mule, in Firestorm's colors.

As with nearly every major event we hold we try to arrange a gift for all Second Life residents and this year will be no exception! ABC – AWESOME BREED CREATIONS have very generously created an exclusive collectible pet mule with an amazing one of a kind coat and eye! I like to think the Mule represents our strength and perhaps our stubbornness! WOW it’s gorgeous! Thank you so much ABC!

I headed to Firestorm Dow Forest (224/232/3902), and found the avatar giver in the size and shape of the mule. I clicked on it to get the package, went to the Ivory Tower to rezz it, and got a box. Opening it, I got the mule and was able to rezz it on the ground and ride it. I was able to name it, and my friend with me was able to click to get saddle and reins.The mule was listed at 143 days old, and was perfectly rideable. It didn't need food or water, but it was not breedable,

Unfortunately, Chilly the firekitty at the Newser office has no mule companion. By accident, I tried rezzing him in a spot where only the landowner could, and not only did the horse fail to rezz, it failed to appear in my inventory. When going back to the mule rezzer, it wouldn't give me another. So be careful where you take the mule from you inventory.

It is unclear how long the anniversary gift will be available. So go get a mule while you can.

Update: I later found the mule in my inventory after logging back on.

The Cobras MC Motorcycle Club

Wesley Regenbogen has been riding on the wild side lately. He met up with a motorcycle club called the "Cobras MC," and began hanging out with them with the idea of doing a story on them. But they got along well enough to the point he was invited in, or "patched in" to borrow a term from biker lingo. So who are the Cobras and where do they ride? Wesley had a few things to say.

Taken at Yareach and Farshore's Mercantile in Caledon, this shopper came in with a raptor mount. Perhaps one could eventually tame such a critter to the point it was okay to handle, but it's doubtful one can truly get a predator to overcome it's instinct to hunt.

The Skybeam Fox Hunt (Nov 2009)

In late 2009, Second Life Newser's predecessor, Second Life Newspaper, moved to the Skybeam Estates. There would soon be a chance to write about the location, with it's third anniversary celebration. Among it's events, a "fox hunt." Covering it would be SL Newspaper's own "fox reporter." The result was a thrilling chase and pursuit, with more than a little funnery. Gemma Cleanslate continues her explorations across Second Life, looking around for Winter-themed areas. She came across some more, and gave them a look. The three places she describes today are a bit different, one intended as a memorial to a late friend, another offering a train ride, the third horse and carriage rides, but all of them offer good frosty fun.
