Guy Fawkes Exhibition

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November." For the people of Great Britain, today is "Guy Fawkes Day," also known as "Bonfire Night." For those who don't know, the holiday is to celebrate the failure of a plot to blow up the English Parliament building with barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes wasn't the ringleader, but was the one caught guarding the explosives. People lit bonfires in celebration. Later celebrations would include fireworks and the throwing of effigies into the bonfires.

To find out a little more about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot, there's a place in London Village one can find out a little more: the Guy Fawkes Exhibition for 2018.

Welcome to The Guy Fawkes Exhibition for 2018. This is the 8th year we have staged the Exhibition and we welcome new and old friends visiting this year!

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, in earlier centuries often called the Gunpowder Treason Plot or the Jesuit Treason, was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby.

Guy Fawkes became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, the failure of which has been commemorated in Britain since 5 November 1605. His effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, commonly accompanied by a firework display.

Some of the exhibit looks a bit more like a haunted house than a museum, such as the rotten bodies and the flaming barrels. But you soon get to the informative parts of the exhibit, with a display of pictures that when touched will tell the resident about a part of the Gunpowder part. There's also a video one can watch. And there are free items, notably a Guy Fawkes avatar and outfit. You can wear just the outfit on your existing (non-mesh) avatar.

The exhibition will be up to November 12.

Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night at the Happy Vixen

"Remember, remember, the Fifth of November." In Britain, Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night. In 1605, a group of conspirators plotted to blow up Parliament and the King, with Guy Fawkes guarding the gunpowder. But the "Gunpowder Plot" was discovered and Guy Fawkes captured and later executed. The English people celebrated their king escaping harm that night by burning bonfires, and have been doing so ever since, with fireworks and the practice of burning effigies of Guy Fawkes later added. In more recent history, Guy Fawkes has become something of a symbol or anti-government resistance with the character "V" in "V for Vendetta" wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and it's adoption by "Anonymous" as a symbol of theirs.

Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night was celebrated in some places in Second Life with numbers of British, such as London. But there's just something primal about a good roarin' fire, and others took the opportunity to celebrate as well. At the Happy Vixen in the Purrfection Estates sim a couple nights before on Thursday November 3, a bonfire was set up next to the beach club, with an effigy of "The Guy" going up in smoke, and the people at the party danced away in firey costumes, fire animations, and a few with Guy Fawkes masks or black hats and cloaks.

The music was played by DJ Serenity, with Perri Prinz and Valkyrie Ice sharing the prize for best outfit.

The Happy Vixen's sister club, Club Cutlass would also have a Guy Fawkes party, this one right on the day of the holiday. But no pictures were taken of the event.

Guy Fawkes Exhibition

"Remember Remember the Fifth of November." Today is "Guy Fawkes Day" in Britain, also known as "Bonfire Night," the evening marked with bonfires and the setting off of fireworks. For those who want to know more about the events about the holiday, there's a Guy Fawkes Exhibition in the Lost Inhibitions sim.

Just inside the entrance are a few freebies, including a Guy Fawkes avatar, of which one can simply just wear the clothes, and a gunpowder keg. Inside are walkways to two rooms, the theater and the exhibit. The theater, of which one needs to be able to play the media, shows a BBC program about the Gunpowder Plot of which Guy Fawkes was arrested and tortured for, done with an occasional touch of humor. Getting there, watch out for anything dropping from above.

For the exhibit, click on the pictures on the wall one by one to get a step by step descriptions of events. There are also a few props one can pose with.

The exhibit is at Lost Inhibitions (88/53/22). There's a Guy Fawkes Day group one can join. It mentioned a party sometime today, but didn't give the time.

Keep an eye out for other Guy Fawkes events. Many are no doubt in sims frequented by Britons, but people from other parts of the world have gotten in on the act. This includes the Happy Vixen Club, which has a Guy Fawkes Night party at 8PM SL time tonight.

Guy Fawkes Party in Steelhead

Last week, Guy Fawkes Day took place on the Fifth of November. In the past, there have been some exhibitions, and last year the Newser covered a party that very night. This year, what I had time to cover was the Guy Fawkes party at Steelhead on Friday night. The community noted for it's number of mad scientists was more than happy to take advantage of the holiday to have a "big bewm."

Fuzzball Ortega was the DJ for the event, the location loaded with crates of gunpowder and other explosives. Whenever his tip jar got a donation, there'd be a boom, "Bombs Away!" The comments were numerous,  "I'm bored. We need bigger explosions." "Fuzz is making more tips tonight I think." "Hope you don't mind smoked meat." There were also Chinese firecrackers one could light on the ground. Not everything was about explosives. TotalLunar Eclipse showed up in a fox spirit avatar, "This is (an) Amaterasu, I am rather fond of it."

This wasn't the first time Steelhead had a "Bonfire Night" party. In 2012, they had one then as well.

Guy Fawkes Night

The Fifth of November was Guy Fawkes Day in England, which in the evening brings on "Bonfire Night." And in Britannia Village they held a Guy Fawkes Night party. It was music with some fiery fun as "The Guy" was burned in effigy (and avatar).

See pictures of the celebration in Events.

Guy Fawkes Day

Today England celebrates "Guy Fawkes Day," which is also known as "Bonfire Night." English residents of Second Life celebrate the event as well, and invite others to join them in the festivities. And for those looking for fun, fire, and a chance to blow something up, ths can be quite a holiday.

Looking around the Grid, I heard about something going on in Britannia Village in the Green Park sim. Looking around, I saw this castle with lines from a poem. Going inside however, it proved empty. But there was a portal to the local cinema, where one could catch a BBC show about "Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot." Green Park (100/50/33)

Besides the theater, there's also an event planned for today at 1PM SL time, going to 4PM and perhaps later. The poster promises, "Music, bonfires, dancing."

The popular (and packed) London City is supposedly having an event as well at Noon SL time. Be on the watch for Guy Fawkes events across the Grid.

Guy Fawkes Night at Steelhead

Steelhead and explosions seem to go hand in hand. But Friday Nov. 9 had something new. Their Friday Night party had the  explosive theme of Guy Fawkes Day. And the Steelheaders showed up to celebrate the British holiday with an American Steampunk mad scientist "blowout."

Guy Fawkes Night at Steelhead's Friday Ball

Friday night in the community of Steelhead is Guy Fawkes Night, in which the Steelheaders "pretend it's the 5th of November, and dance away under the town hall." Those Guy Fawkes masks seen at protests and elsewhere are encouraged, "Bring your revolution masks and some dynamite."

The dance is at the Steelhead Ballroom in Steelhead Capital City and broadcasted on Krypton Radio. The event starts at 7 SL time, and goes on until at least 9, or until the last people leave.

Guy Fawkes Exhibition

In the Tardis sim, there's an exhibition of the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot.

Experience the dark history behind one of England's longest traditions, the burning of Guy Fawkes effigies on November 5th. The Guy Fawkes exhibition will take you step by step on a true story of a plot to destroy the very establishment of England, and the truth behind the man considered the culprit. With freebies and interactive props, this Exhibition is not to be missed!

A notecard at the entrance reccomends you set your view to midnight to get the best effect. Most of the show is in the main exhibition room in the center of the place. "On your way back out, don't forget the freebies."

The exhibit at Tardis (215, 55, 22) is open to November 11th.

Guy Fawkes Day

In the Tardis sim, there was a Guy Fawkes party, one that presumably started in early evening in Britian. But it was continuing at 6 SL time, when I came across it. There was a small plushie Guy Fawkes in front of the bonfire, and fireworks going off over London Bridge.

To the south, there was a Guy Fawkes exhibit, with displays showing how the Gunpowder plot was discovered, and Guy Fawkes tortured and then hung, "no reason for gunpowder treason."

It wasn't just in Tardis that there was some fun that night. At Hyde Park in the London sims, there was a large celebration, filled with live music bands, and firework shows.

To those unfamiliar with the holiday, Guy Fawkes was in charge of guarding the gunpowder underneath the English Parliament in a plot to blow it up. The plot was discovered, and Guy Fawkes was caught, tortured, and later executed. Upon hearing of the foiled "Gunpowder Plot," people celebrated it's failure by lighting bonfires. Later on came further traditions, such as fireworks and Guy Fawkes in effugy (with or without fireworks). At one time children would go around collecting money to by materials for their Guy Fawkes dummy, asking for "A penny for the Guy."

"A Penny for the Guy"

Arriving at New London Village at about 1:30 PM SL time, the Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night party had already been going on for an hour and a half. Among the avatars celebrating was a GuyFawkes Firegrave, an alt brought out for these kinds of events. At 2 PM, GuyFawkes was hung in the gallows with the party continuing.

Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night

For British residents of Second Life, and those looking for a good party, November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night. In real-life celebrations, effugies of "The Guy" are burned, often after being stuffed with firecrackers. And in Second Life, some various locations, such as New London Village, will be having their own Guy Fawkes events.

New London Village offers more than a party. According to a CNN article by Janey Bracken, the sim has an exhibition around the Gunpowder Plot in which Guy Fawkes took part and was captured and executed for. Janey wrote the sim owners and managers, "have done a brilliant job displaying this part of the UK’s fascinating history."

The Bonfire party at New London Village will take place at Noon SL time. Other Guy Faukes events are taking place in Mango, the London England UK sim, and many others.
