Reader Submitted Picture: Early SLB Empty Plots

From Kamida Delec, who was going about the grounds of the Second Life Birthday on Sunday July 21, and noticed some spots that had nothing but green grass or water. When told it was the last day of the event, "Ah, that explains the empty plot I see time to time."

SL16B Sims Open to Exhibitors

Yesterday, Sunday May 26, the sims of the Second Life Birthday were open to exhibitors. The Newser, and other people applying to have exhibits at the grounds of the event celebrating Second Life's anniversary got notecards notifying them they had been accepted.

Hello and welcome to Second Life’s 16th birthday celebrations! We are thrilled to have you joining us this year! It is hard to believe that 16 years have passed since Linden Lab first opened the doors to this wonderful adventure we call Second Life. We are excited to have you bringing your building skills and creative vision to the party. This year to memorialize Second Life’s “Sweet Sixteen” we are going all out with a rock-around-the-clock extravaganza. So pull out the poodle skirts and the leather jackets and meet us for a ice cream soda at the diner because this year we are going “back to the future” and partying 1950s style.

People were asked to contact one of three moles to get invited into the Exhibitors group, and to get their plot for their build. As people were asked to mark plots with something to tell others they got it, The Newser quite literally threw it's hat into the ring, or rather our fedora.

And what will be the building of the Newser's that reflects both the 1950s and Second Life's vision? Well, you'll see. We'll show you a couple sneak peeks between now and then though.

Stay tuned.

The event will be held October 19-28, 2018 - mark your calendars and start making plans!

Instead of information sessions, upon purchasing your plot, you will be asked to fill out a simple form which will help us to place your camp in the best possible location on the playa. You will not be assigned your camp location or group tag until you have submitted the form - the link to that will be in the notecard included in your plot folder when you purchase your plot.

Be sure to reserve your plot today! The sims will arrive about mid-September, but plots are limited.

Plot Sizes, Prices, Prim Limits, Maximum Build Heights

512 Plot L$2,800 LI = 156, max height = 16m

Here is the SLURL to the kiosks: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Burning%20Man-%20Deep%20Hole/174/32/25.

SL15B Open to Exhibitors

The early part of the Second Life Fifteenth Birthday is over. The exhibitors, at least the first round of those approved, were notified a few days ago in their emails. And starting at Noon today, they could ask to be invited to the exhibitors' group and claim their plots. Ant the Newser "threw it's hat in the ring" once more. Our build will be at SL15B Spectacular.

Already, some exhibitors are putting their builds up. So we can't show you an expanse of plots waiting to be claimed as the builders were that fast. We may show you a few sneak peaks over the next few weeks. But we can't reveal too much, not yet, at least of the builds. But there's still plenty to write about in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for further updates.

The sims open to all on Sunday June 17 at Noon SL time when the celebration begins.

SL14B Update: The Second Life Newser Gets Its Exhibit Plot

On Friday May 26, those accepted as exhibitors at the Second Life Birthday celebration were invited to begin claiming their plots. Some did so right away after 12 Noon when the volunteers were ready to do so. Others due to real life or a desire to avoid the rush waited until later. Among those was the Second Life Newser. Right after being assigned a plot at SL14B Electrify, we were to claim it with a dropped object. Many did so with the Cake slice in their exhibitor packets. Yours truly chose something else, quite literally "throwing our hat in the ring," or in this case on the plot.

But the hat didn't stay there for long, at least the way it was shown above. Silvia Ametza, the builder of this year's Newser exhibit, was soon on the scene. And what took the place of "The Hat?" We'll have a sneak peek or two soon.

Press Release: Burn2 OctoBurn - Da Vinci's Workshop - Octover 15-23, 2016

"Welcome Home"

We are so excited! Planning for the Big Burn we've all been waiting for is now getting well underway. As is often our custom, we follow the theme that Burning Man announces, and this year it is "Da Vinci's Workshop."  You can read the full description of the theme as written by Larry Harvey and Stuart Mangrum at Burning Man's Website.

We had a poster contest and the posters were all so good that four winners were selected rather than just one, shown below. We will use all four posters for distributing the news inworld and online.

More Burnin' News

The plot sale opened Sunday the 17th of July and plots are being reserved. Plottery and Juried Art camp applications are coming in. It’s really going to happen! Support BURN2 and reserve YOUR plot! Can’t buy one? Apply for a Plottery plot, or take on the creative challenge and apply to be a juried camp artist at Octoburn! Note: These plots will be in limited supply, however...
Now then, all you primslingers and meshers, script wizards and graphics imagineers: Get inspired by visions of Renaissance ingenuity, Medieval machinery and the artistic, eclectic, multi-gifted genius of the great Leonardo da Vinci, and bring those creations to the virtually dusty playa - come in world and get your plot reserved as soon as you can!

A Call for Volunteers
Teams are forming up, leads will be identified, and we will need volunteers to help with greeting, building, creating, performing, dancing, and sharing the news about the happenings on the virtual playa! If you think you might be interested in joining us in a lead, co-lead or key role capacity, be sure and fill out the BURN2 Application for Key Roles form. We’ll be in touch right quick. If you don’t want to be a lead but you do want to help out, fill out the volunteer application and our volunteer coordinator will help get you started!

While We Wait...We Ain't Waiting!
We’re not just sitting back and twiddling our thumbs. We are planning all sorts of fun little things to do together. Watch for notices in the BurningMan 2.0 group - be sure you’re in that group! - and join in with your fellow Burners to participate, collaborate and just plain celebrate the fact that we are Burners!

Then, when the sims come in, let the building begin! Burn On!

Guy Fawkes Exhibition

"Remember Remember the Fifth of November." Today is "Guy Fawkes Day" in Britain, also known as "Bonfire Night," the evening marked with bonfires and the setting off of fireworks. For those who want to know more about the events about the holiday, there's a Guy Fawkes Exhibition in the Lost Inhibitions sim.

Just inside the entrance are a few freebies, including a Guy Fawkes avatar, of which one can simply just wear the clothes, and a gunpowder keg. Inside are walkways to two rooms, the theater and the exhibit. The theater, of which one needs to be able to play the media, shows a BBC program about the Gunpowder Plot of which Guy Fawkes was arrested and tortured for, done with an occasional touch of humor. Getting there, watch out for anything dropping from above.

For the exhibit, click on the pictures on the wall one by one to get a step by step descriptions of events. There are also a few props one can pose with.

The exhibit is at Lost Inhibitions (88/53/22). There's a Guy Fawkes Day group one can join. It mentioned a party sometime today, but didn't give the time.

Keep an eye out for other Guy Fawkes events. Many are no doubt in sims frequented by Britons, but people from other parts of the world have gotten in on the act. This includes the Happy Vixen Club, which has a Guy Fawkes Night party at 8PM SL time tonight.

At the SL12B Exhibit Plot

With Qwark Allen gone, it's up to me, and longtime Newser friend Ranchan Weidman, to build the new exhibit. Yours truly isn't a professional builder, so while Ranchan was building part of the exhibit at her carrier high above HV Community, yours truly was tweaking a few things on the plot to at least make some progress. But after some work, it was time to rest.

Stay tuned for more details as The Birthday approaches.

Putting Our "Hat In The Ring"

The Newser finally got it's plot for it's exhibit at the SL12B. To let everyone know it was claimed, an object had to be rezzed on it. Some just rezzed the "slice of cake" that all exhibitors received from volunteers. Me however, I left something else behind.

Stay tuned for more details on the SL12B.

Cartoon of the Day: The SL11B

Taken somewhere at the SL11B. I'll have to credit Crap Mariner for this joke.

This is the first cartoon I've done without the benefit of the "Fototrix," which I used since Dana Vanmoer told me about it several years ago.

SL11B: Plot Holders

Gemma Cleanslate has been busy with her Exhibitor Assistant duties at the Second Live Eleventh Birthday (SL11B) sims, so her time for reporting has been a bit short. While she's come across a number of builds at the SL11B plots, it's still too early for pictures. But she has seen no shortage of plot holders, those little things builders leave to claim a plot while they work on the exhibit. So she took a few pictures.

See Gemma's pictures in Extra.

RFL: Postcards from The Walk

Bain Finch invited the Newser to use a couple pictures originally posted on Facebook. On the plot for the RFL Advocacy team, their initial build was ... simple.

Red Ryder commented amusingly on the untextured, blocky structure, "RFL Advocacy got us all beat."

But the builds are just beginning. Stay tuned for more pictures.

SL Video: "The Drax Files - Episode 8: MadPea Games"

(Click Here if the video fails to load)

In the latest of Draxtor Despres' interviews, he goes to Kiana Writer of Madpea Games. This time, it's Draxtor who is filmed in-person and Kiana appears just as her avatar, "it's time for a little role-reversal."

"The debate if Second Life is a game or not is alive and well at least since on NBC's The Office [2007] Dwight Schrute rejects a narrow definition of the vast virtual world in which he "plays" a paper salesman.

Meanwhile, Finland based design company MadPea Games has not been paying much attention to this back and forth, instead churning out complex immersive adventure games and game-based learning concepts within Second Life using the platform's vast array of tools to the fullest.

MadPea's globally dispersed team operates as if they are working out of a joint because the persistent universe of SL allows them to do just that: scripters from Holland manipulate game mechanics with 3D modelers from the United States in real-time while designers from Germany, France and the UK test game flow on their new work-in-progress action game "Unia", disproving assumptions that only consoles can handle intense game-play, high-end graphics and epic storylines."

SL10B Open to Exhibitors

Yesterday on Sunday May 26, the sims for the SL10B celebration were open to those whom would be setting up the exhibits, or helping out to. All day begining at Noon SL time, exhibitors IMed the SL10B group asking to be made part of the new exhibition group so they could teleport over to their plots. Since applications were closed on May 20th, the exhibitors began getting their notifications in the email. This includes Second Life Newser, which got it's notification a few days ago.

The Newser's plot is in the SL10B Astonish sim, the northeast corner of the event grounds. Like the others, it was 1024 square meters (32x32) with a 269 prim capacity and a 175 ft height limit.

Each exhibitor got a "Cake Slice," with a few notecards and things, made to resemble a slice of cake with the words "It All Starts With a Cube," a quote from Philip Linden.

Among the contents were "Exhibitor" tags to be worn by avatars. The title for exhibitors in their new group was "SL10B Exhibitionist," which got a few chuckles in the group chat.

Residents were asked to drop something on the sim to let everyone know the plot had been claimed. For the SL Newser's plot, there was one object that would tell everyone for sure whose plot it was.

A wider view of this corner of the SL10B grounds. A few other plots had already been claimed as well. While some just had a cake slice dropped, others had at least something set up on the plot.

A couple exhibitors looked like they already were set up for show.

It's still three weeks until the SL10B event begins, so there's still plenty of time for the exhibitors to set up their builds. Including the SL Newser, which will soon have something else in place of "The Hat." Stay tuned for more updates.

Guy Fawkes Exhibition

In the Tardis sim, there's an exhibition of the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot.

Experience the dark history behind one of England's longest traditions, the burning of Guy Fawkes effigies on November 5th. The Guy Fawkes exhibition will take you step by step on a true story of a plot to destroy the very establishment of England, and the truth behind the man considered the culprit. With freebies and interactive props, this Exhibition is not to be missed!

A notecard at the entrance reccomends you set your view to midnight to get the best effect. Most of the show is in the main exhibition room in the center of the place. "On your way back out, don't forget the freebies."

The exhibit at Tardis (215, 55, 22) is open to November 11th.

Remember Remember the fifth of November

The gunpowder treason and plot

I see no reason why gunpowder treason

should ever be forgot

Guy Fawkes Guy, 'twas his intent

to blow up king and parliament

Three score barrels were laid below

to prove old England's overthrow

By God's mercy he was catched

with a dark lantern and lighted match

Holler boys Holler boys let the bells ring

Holler boys Holler boys God save the King

SL Machinima: A New Babbage Xmas by the "Designing Worlds" Team

A little Steampunk Xmas story, by Saffia Widdershins and Elrik Merlin

"Saffia and Elrik are visiting New Babbage to deliver a shipment of seasonal gifts from Prim Perfect Publications to the urchins of New Babbage. Saffia will be meeting our old friend, the Assistant Maceholder of New Babbage, Victor Mornington, to deliver the gifts, while Elrik hopes to get a look at some of the exciting new steam-powered technology developed for the winter season by their ingenious engineers. And this is New Babbage, after all, so absolutely nothing at all can go wrong…"
