At the Relay

As this is being posted, it's the middle of the Relay Walk, the 24 hour event that is the high point of the Relay Weekend.

Following the Opening Ceremony, the various teams gathered onto the Track.

While cancer is  a serious subject, there's been much funnery on the Track. Team Ragtag poked fun at the "Pokemon GO" craze by putting a pikachu on their camp.

At the American Cancer Society sim, there was a spontaneous gathering of people.

When Stingray Raymaker went AFK, people decided to poke fun at him by rezzing things on and around him. Then Maddona, with her cockroach arms after her "Nightmare" challenge decided to stand behind him so he was between me and the camera ...

Poor Stingray. He never gets a break.

That's all for now from the Relay. Stand by for more.

Relay Track Peeks: "The Forest" and Team Shadow

Among those taking part at the Relay for Life Track this year is Gemma Cleanslate. Besides both a reporter for the Newser and a member of one of the teams, Team Shadow, for her the Relay is personal as she herself is a cancer survivor. Taking a look around the track before the Relay Walk this Weekend, she stopped by her own team's camp and one of the designer sims, Pluto Fairey's "The Forest."

Press Release: Get Ready for the Relay Weekend!

Get ready for Relay Weekend!
Celebrating 12 years of raising funds for cancer research

(July 6, 2016) In just 3 days, thousands of Second Life Residents from all across the real globe will join together on July 16 and 17 for the 12th Relay Weekend of Relay For Life of Second Life and celebrate.

“It’s incredible to see how this Relay has grown over the last 12 years,” said Stingray Raymaker, American Cancer Society staff partner. “That first year, 2005, there were 315 Avatars walking the track to bring attention to the importance of cancer research. This year more than 3,000 will take to the track. Come on out and see what has become the largest fundraiser in SL and other virtual worlds.”

Relay Weekend will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16 and will feature 24 hours of themed laps, activities and entertainment. The weekend will wrap up with a massive party at 1 p.m. PDT Sunday, July 17.

If you can’t be at the Relay sims, tune in to T1 Radio, at T1radio.com, which will be airing the festivities through Relay Weekend.

“Our 2016 season has brought about outreach like no other season” Said Random Padar - Darrow, 2016 Event Chair. “We have over 60 new teams this year.  At every team event we have seen more and more new faces.  I am thrilled that our Relay Weekend is almost here!  We will begin with an opening ceremony beginning at 10am on July 16th, followed by our Honor Lap for our survivors and caregivers to walk proudly. At 9pm we will hold our always inspiring and touching Luminaria ceremony.  As I walk through our sims this year I see some amazing builds!  Team campsites along with special designer sims will compete for awards that display cancer education and theme inspired builds.  Once Upon A Cure season will go down in the history books as one which was filled with stories from our passionate Relayers, while working to write the end of the story!”

Relay For Life of Second Life is an annual activity that takes place in Second Life in July each year. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from March through mid-July. In July, teams build campsites and walk a track, just like in a real world Relay.  Over the last eleven years, Relay For Life of Second Life has raised almost $3 million for cancer research and is the largest charity event in the virtual worlds. Several thousand volunteers from more than 80 countries participate each year, truly making it a global event.

There are many ways to get involved in Relay For Life of Second Life and another way to show your support is through sponsorships. Relay For Life of Second Life is proud to have the following as premier sponsors:  RGF Estates, Rockliffe University, Sol Existence and Runestone and other sponsorships are available; please contact the Cathy10 Longoria, Sponsorship Lead or Random Padar, Event Chair for more details.

Relay For Life Track Sneak Peeks

Work on the Relay for Life Weekend Walk track continues. For the Sunbeamer camp in RFL Support, the work is just about done with some adjustments here and there. This picture taken over the weekend shows team captain Rita Mariner with builder Cynthia Farshore.

One of the sim-wide non-team exhibits had a "Jungle Book" theme

"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"

With the weekend getting closer, the work on the 36 sims is almost done. Though there is still a little more left to do. Stay tuned for more sneak peaks, and a preview of the Team Sunbeamer camp.

Relay For Life Walk Sims Online

The sims for the Second Life Birthday may be coming down. But the ones for the next big event in Second Life have just come online. The American Cancer Society sim has been joined by about forty others which appear about once a year at this time for the 24 hour Relay Walk, also known as the Relay Weekend as it takes place over Saturday and Sunday. A few sims are for activities and major exhibits which take up a whole to a half sim. But most of the areas are divided up into quarters to accommodate four teams.

Among the camps will be that of Team Sunbeamers. Their camp is in RFL Support, the sim just to the left of the northeast corners. Rita Mariner (still in her "Bid Me Pink" avatar) places the team name marker on the campsite here in this picture.

Unfortunately. aside from the build teams and a few other Relayers, the sims are closed to the public. This includes a certain fox reporter of whom this was as far as he could go. The good news, Becky Shamen is on the Sunbeamer's build team, so we should be getting some sneak peaks over the next couple weeks, the Relay Weekend taking place on the 16th and 17th.

BACKGROUND

The Relay For Life movement united communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. Relay for Life events are typically community events where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. But in Second Life, we get to do it all within the virtual platform in the 17th largest Relay For Life event in the world. Each Relay team has at least one participant on the track at all times and raises funds for the American Cancer Society in the months leading up to the event.

Beginin July 11 through July 19, the Activity Regions will be open to the Second Life community. Join our Relay community for this week-long celebration. You can expect to see numerous events from live musicians, a comedian, fun games, and people celebrating in an already electrifying atmosphere.

"The campsites are built, and the atmosphere is so contagious. Join us as we bond as one team with the one common goal in fighting cancer, said Random Darrow, 2005 Relay For Life of Second Life Event Lead, "I am very proud of our Relay community. Seasoned Relayers embraced new teams and Relayers. We had a record number of new teams this year, a sign that Relay For Life in Second Life is growing!"

Since Relay For Life started in Second Life, volunteers in the virtual world have raised more than $2.6 million and hope to reach $250,000 USD for the 2015 season. Funds raised in Second Life are routed directly to the American Cancer Society through official fundraising kiosks and vendors. The money raised through this event helps the American Cancer Society to fund life-saving cancer research and to continue to be the globalleader in the fight against cancer through education and prevention initiatives.

The Relay For Life of Second Life is one of the most diverse annual events of any kins on the grid where hundreds of teams representing many communities in Second Life come together, united in their shared goal to end cancer. The event also provides an opportunity for some of the grid's most talented designers to showcase their talents on team campsites and interactive region-wide builds.

The event is open to the publice during the full 24 hours between 10AM-10AM SL time on July 18-19. "We invite everyone in Second Life, reguardless if you're a current Relayer or not. Walk the track with us, visit the campsites and builds, shop, make donations, and listen to the stream," says Stingray Raymaker, Director of RFL Online Revenye for the American Cancer Society, "There's something for everyone at the Relay For Life of Second Life, and if you want to fight cancer, this is the best way to do it!"

The Premier Sponsors of the 2015 Relay For Life of Second Life are:
Gemstone Breedables
Sol Existance
Metal Health Club and Mall
Runestone
Club Zydeco

From 10AM SL time on July 18 through 10AM July 19, you can listen to the event at T1radio.com. T1 Radio is the official broadcoast stream of Relay For Life of Second Life.

Sunbeamer Meeting

On Saturday June 6, Team Sunbeamer, the Relay for Life Team for the Sunweaver Estates, had their meeting about what to build for their camp on the Relay Weekend track. Those attending were Team Captain Rita Mariner, Cynthia Farshore, Shockwave Yarreach, Dusk Griswold, Pagan Sunburn, Nydia Tungsten, Lomgren Smalls, and myself.

Some ideas were pushed around, and an outline of what to build was agreed on. So what will it be? Stay tuned.

Relay Weekend Sims Online

With just a couple weeks left until the Relay Weekend, the high point of the RFL season, the sims of the track are online. There are a total of 43 sims, including those for the Breedables Fair and some for activities. But the bulk are for various team exhibits. The shape of a "10" is in tribute for the RFL in SL now having it's tenth season.

The Sunbeamers, the team of the Sunweaver Estates where the Newser office makes it's home, will be having it's exhibit in the northwest corner of RFL Dedication. Some work on the place has already began, with plans for a tribute to the now gone Passionate Redheads team as one of the displays, though not the only one. Until it's finished though, any pictures of the place will just be "teasers," not showing much.

The opening ceremony will be at 10AM SL time on Saturday July 19, after which the event goes on for over 24 hours, closing at about Noon SL time on Sunday July 20.

"Go Relay!"

Relay For Life: After the Walk

Bixyl Shuftan continues his coverage of the Relay For Life sims. Even with The Walk over, there are still things to see and do. The camps and builds offered plenty to see. And then there were the Relayers themselves, who were determined to have fun while the sims were still up.

The 2013 Relay Weekend

Last weekend was when the Relay For Life Walk took place across forty-some sims in Second Life, hundreds of avatars taking part in the event. They raised thousands of dollars worth of Lindens for the American Cancer Society, and had fun doing so with fun and informative exhibits and activities, and numerous smaller events. Bixyl Shuftan, a member of the RFL Sundreamers, the team of the SL Newser's office neighbors, writes about his time at the Relay.

Almost Time For The Relay For Life Walk: July 13-14

After months of Relay For Life fundraising, the main event of the season is almost here. For 24 hours from Saturday July 13 to Sunday July 14, hundreds of avatars will make their way across over 40 sims. Most of them have various exhibitions set up by the various teams, including the Steelhead Salmons and the Sundreamers. Besides the kiosks set up around the track, there are numerous luminaria one can donate to in the name of a friend or loved one. The various exhibits offer sights to see and things to do for those willing to get off the track and explore, and there will be numerous DJ music parties and other events.

The Relay For Life is Second Life's largest charity, raising funds for the American Cancer Society. And the Relay For Life Walk weekend is one of the Grid's major events of the year.

The event will officially open at 10:00am on Saturday with an Opening Ceremony, where the Fundraiser Club Banner Awards for 2013 will be presented to the teams. More than 100 cancer survivors and caregivers have registered to take part in the ‘honor walk’, which is a CELEBRATE lap and will start immediately after the opening ceremony, followed by the team spirit lap.

At 9:00pm the track sims are turned to midnight to light up the thousands of luminaria (candles) along the track, each representing a survivor or someone who has passed from cancer. For one hour people walk the track in silence as the dedications are read over the broadcasting stream, provided by T1 Radio. This lap is known as the REMEMBER lap.

At 6:00am is the FIGHT BACK Ceremony when people gather together to make a personal pledge to help fight cancer. It might be by pledging to have a regular breast exam, to follow a healthy diet, or to stop smoking.

The Closing Ceremony will begin at 10:00am on Sunday, June 14th followed by a final victory lap at 11:00am. The Raffle For Relay and Silent Auction will remain open until that afternoon.

RFL: Postcards from The Walk

Bain Finch invited the Newser to use a couple pictures originally posted on Facebook. On the plot for the RFL Advocacy team, their initial build was ... simple.

Red Ryder commented amusingly on the untextured, blocky structure, "RFL Advocacy got us all beat."

But the builds are just beginning. Stay tuned for more pictures.

Press Release: It's Time To Relay

After four months of fundraising, Second Life Relayers will be gathering on July 13-14 for the ninth annual Relay For Life of Second Life 24 hour event to CELEBRATE, REMEMBER and FIGHT BACK.  The Relay track will stretch across 34 of 40 Relay sims and will bring together thousands of volunteers and team members who have so far raised an amazing US$300,000 in the 2013 fundraising season and who will be walking the track together in their quest to see an end to cancer.

Stingray9798 Raymaker ( Jeff Montegut, the American Cancer Society’s staff partner to SLs Relay) said: “Thanks to the tremendous support of our volunteers, teams, committee members, and corporate partners, we have raised an astonishing amount of money and are getting so close to an all-time total of 2 million dollars raised in Second Life.  This important contribution is money that funds the mission of the American Cancer Society – research, education, and prevention.  I’m looking forward to personally thanking everyone at this years event!’

The theme of this year’s Relay is ‘100 Years of Hope’, a theme that has inspired some of the most imaginative events and builds and in celebration of the American Cancer Society’s 100 year anniversary.  The Relay track will be divided into Past, Present and Future areas.  The fun-filled weekend will also include five activity regions that will house live music, djs, a silent auction, an art show, a Raffle for Relay, Snail Racing, a Teams vendored flea market and a special ‘Teams R Us’ clubhouse where teams can hold events away from the track so that they can celebrate without lagging the track sims.

Visitors will land at the Welcome Area, upon arrival, located on the Relay For Life region, where there will be a lot of helpful information to help them get started and where there will be volunteer greeters to answer questions and give out the 2013 Visitors Guide.  There are themed laps between the main ceremonies and visitors will see signs over the track that display the current lap theme.

The Closing Ceremony will begin at 10:00am on Sunday, June 14th followed by a final victory lap at 11:00am.  The Raffle For Relay and Silent Auction will remain open until that afternoon.

Nikki Mathieson, 2013 Event Chair, said: “We have had an amazing season. Our volunteers have worked non-stop, their excitement, commitment and dedication has not wavered!  We are looking forward to Relay Weekend, where we will come together to Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back.  Relay For Life of Second Life has made such an important impact, with thousands of people logging in to make some loud noise and pitch in on Finishing the Fight against cancer!  We have proved that a determined group of people who care, can join together and do amazing things.  We CAN make a difference!  Congratulations to each and every person that was involved in this year’s relay!”

Relay Weekend: "360,000 Thanks"

Looking back at the Relay Weekend, here's a few words from Relayer Bain Finch.

* * * * *
Wasn't that just the most amazing 24 hours, ever?

I found myself fixated in the Volunteers and Lands group chats today, just reading the out pouring of one's profound emotions moments and expressing of their thanks to everyone involved.

And going well beyond the obvious faces, names and voices of Relay, but to people that worked tiredly in obscurity. The individuals that stepping in to fill a void. The linden's were impressively thanks as well, as they were out there working long hours trouble shooting the chaos of Relay, and they were noticed by some, and others openly shared that appreciation.

There are a good many individuals out there, that must be completely spent from their efforts. Charlene, Nikki, MamaP, Dwen, Stingray and Trader are the obvious leaders to the legions of others under their wings. The mentors, Teams R Us Survivors/Caregivers, Outreach, Event, Design, Sponsorship and PR committees and their legions. I would like to see that list of everyone that held a committee position this year, I bet it is extensive. And then the Special Events people that work in concert with Relay of Second Life but are not part of Relay.

And then there are THE TEAMS! Team Captains, Co-Captains and their membership and supporters and individuals. We have shared many a laughs, great times. And many very real moments and tears, when life rears its ugly head. You are Relay. You are that <<>>

All the Sponsors of Relay and the Sponsors of Relay Teams, that participate at ever level Relay. They pay for us to do what we do. Please show your appreciation by visiting their shops all year long.

Yet another group of people that work constantly of our benefit are the media people: Streamed, Voiced and Written. This group of folk are a little different. They work year round. Again this Relay season the main media groups in Second Life – Treet.tv, Metaverse Broadcasting, Metaworld Broadcasting, Pookymedia and Prim Perfect are came together to put out a twenty-four hour telethon in support of Relay for Life, which will include news, interviews, and special events and streamed that inworld and online.

These same good people also covered all our mains events, right from Kick-Off, to the Fashion Fair, on and on, along with another legion of Bloggers, Tweeters, Facebook and so forth. These people do this year round and lend their support and move on to other stories, along with their followers and supporters, sponsors and so forth.

Going a level further, there are all the people, our real life family, our real life friends, co-workers and associates that give us support in this. Letting you book time off for this, covering you shift maybe, or the thousands of ways they support you and this.

I know I have missed a major group of people, because it just too daunting of a task to summarize everyone.

Just like it is just too daunting to summarize my appreciations for all the big and little things, that every single one of us have done in this.

The very best way I can think is, for each one of us, needs to take a step back, take what you are feeling right now, and thank yourself with that thanks.
