SL Video: "Second Life Destinations - Medieval Roleplaying"

Xiola Linden's post for Second Life Destinations on July 3 was of "Medieval Roleplaying," the video filmed in the area of Mystvale.

Have you ever thought about writing your own Medieval novel? What if you could live through your very own battle of the throne without any of the very bloody and finite endings you’ve seen on television? Hold court, joust, ride forth into battle on the back of your trusted steed, or simply embrace the photogenic romance of living in an era long passed - it’s all possible in SL.

That’s where communities like MYSTVALE and other role-playing communities within Second Life come in. Tailored to immerse you in an experience that blends history and fantasy together, and allows you to begin making your own history through creative story-telling. Talk about choosing your own adventure!
Put on your favorite medieval outfit, grab your preferred party of adventurers, and cross the virtual veil into MYSTVALE.

Game Review: War Thunder

When it comes to multiplayer WW2 combat vehicle games, most will probably think of "World of Tanks" or "World of Warships." But there are others out there. One that's gotten some attention is "War Thunder." Starting off as an air combat game, it's been expanded over time to cover ground, and more recently sea battles. But even if one sticks to the tanks, there are a number of differences from it's more famous counterpart.

It's been several months since Leona Kitty Last wrote an article for the Newser, saying she needed to take some time for real life business. She recently contacted the paper again with some bad news: she had cancer. Despite the best efforts of doctors, the cancer has been an especially aggressive one that has progressed to the point curing it is no longer their goal. Leona decided to write about her experiences with the disease.

Scenes From the Linden-Resident Snowball Fight

Monday December 21 at 10AM was the time of the Linden-Resident Snowball Fight in Second Life. Numerous Lindens, including Ebbe Linden himself, showed up to take on the many residents there eager to pelt those whom keep putting off fixing the bugs, create too many bureaucratic rules, and charge too much for tier. Gemma Cleanslate was there, and took a number of pictures of the melee.

Reenactment at Roma

Last weekend at the Roma community, the Paganalia festival took place. On Saturday January 24 there were various events such as a live music concert and a fishing tournament. The fun continued on Sunday January 25, with events such as a crocodile race and a battle reenactment.

The XIII legio will reenact the heroic action of Horatius Cocles, who on 509 BC defended  the access to Roma via Pons (bridge) Sublicius, standing alone against the Etruscan army. LMs in notecard.

One reenactor took on the role of Cocles while several others assumed that of Etruscan attackers. To help out the defender, he was wearing a slightly buffed battle HUD that gave him extra hit points. But it turned out those weren't needed (except maybe as a psychological boost), as he continuously beat all attackers while taking less damage than they.

After the last attacker was beaten, the bridge was collapsed, replaying the part when the real bridge was destroyed, allowing Cocles to retreat to safety.  The Wikipedia entry about Horatius Cocles about the story says that it describes him as surviving the battle and being subsequently honored, but the injuries he suffered from the battle meant his career in the Roman army was at an end.

RFL Springfest Battle of the DJs

From Noon to 2 PM on Sunday April 20, the Relay for Life's Sunbeamer Team held a "Battle of the DJs."  This was the Relay team's event for the "Springfest" weekend. Three of the team's DJs performed to raise funds for the team for the American Cancer Society.

'Beamers, we will need you to here to cheer on your fav DJ to victory. Cynthia Farshore, Shockwave Yareach or Perri Prinz, as they battle for your hearts, minds and your hard earned Lindens.  Who wins will be determined by who raises the most Lindens, during their 40 minute jam session!  Battle starts at  Noon SLT.

DJ Cynthia performed first at Noon. The music from a far shore was followed by the 'beamers answer to Wolfman Jack: DJ Shockwave whom performed from 12:40 to 1:20 PM. Last but far from least on this Easter Day event was their resident bunny DJ Perri. Here, she has a couple new fans coming up to the stage for a closer look.

All three DJs brought in several thousand Lindens, bringing the team total to just under 49,000 Lindens. As of the writing of this article, the total stands at 50,000 raised, about half the amount needed to reach Silver status.

*Addition* Rita later announced it was Perri Prinz who brought in the most cash.

I want to thank our three DJs for putting on a great show!  You all did great!  ...  I do want to thank those of you who did find the time away from family and friends to come out and support our event.  Cynthia raised 1170L, Shockwave raised 1949L, Perri raised 2450L.  So Perri is our WINNER!

Go Relay!

Battle of the DJs at Tiki Paradise

In a few days, on Friday the 4th, the club, Tiki Paradise, will host a DJ battle, at 1800-2000 (6 pm-8 pm). The DJs performing are fairly new to the club, Safi and Hudley. The music they will be streaming has yet to be determined. However, when it is determined, it will still be kept secret to keep the battle fair.

I originally started to organize the battle three days ago, to prove to everyone how much a host really can do. However, that soon changed, when I went to a friend's set. Their set usually draws about 20 people, however less and less people have been coming, and this set really hit the low, the only people in attendance were the host, the DJ, the two owners, and me. I realized that most people go to clubs, not for lindens, but to hear great music.

It is sad, yet it's assuring at the same time. It's sad that we can't get people to come, even when there's a contest, consisting of, at least, L$ 250. It's reassuring, since it shows how much greediness has decreased. So, rather than sitting back, and watching the club die, I decided to do something, and that is when I really had a reason to get this battle all set up, and going.

So make sure, if you want to hear some great music, while helping a club out, at the same time, come to Tiki Paradise. Not to mention, it's sort of my way of getting back to hosting at the club, which has been a second home to me, since I joined SL, over a year ago.

Virtual Gettysburg Gets a New Home

Last month in December 2013, the Newser reported on the Virtual Gettysburg exhibit, which at the time was a temporary setup in the Sunset Isle sim. For those who enjoyed the display, there's some good news. The battlefield now has a new home in Redemptions.

"I'm happy to announce that we've moved to a new sim, which will hopefully be a permanent home," Trodden Mills explained to me, "we have more prims now so we will have a chance to expand -- I've got someone working on a walking tour that should be very impressive. ... Something with more information than the balloon tour."

Trodden also explained they will be fixing a few bugs the display had, such as some "holes" in the terrain, "At least we can guarantee no one will fall ..." *grin*

Virtial Gettysburg is now at Redemptions (98, 23, 3965)

Biggest Battle in Eve Online's Ten Year History, Over $300,000 USD Worth of Virtual Weaponry Lost

People can put some serious money in virtual goods sometimes. For instance, sims in Second Life cost a thousand dollars for a normal one that can handle more than a few people, and about $300 a month to maintain. Have several sims, and that's some serious money invested. But could one imagine the equivalent of these sims invested in a single battle, and possibly lost forever? With this in mind, in the game of Eve Online on Monday January 27, a battle took place that was truly massive in the numbers of players taking part and the value of the ships involved. And the amount the participants lost in terms of real-life cash was nothing short of massive as well.

Virtual Gettysburg

If you're looking for a change of pace from the Winter events and places, there is an historical exhibit up: Virtual Gettysburg. This location depicts the field of the Civil War battle that raged in southern Pennsylvania from July 1 to 3, 1863, resulting in tens of thousands dead or wounded. If you're interested, don't wait long. The exhibit is scheduled to be gone after December 31st.

Minecraft Ship Battle

Besides Second Life, there was piratey fun other places online last week. World of Warcraft for instance had it's "Pirate Day" at Booty Bay. But there was also Minecraft. Nydia Tungsten was able to set things up for a ship to ship battle, and it was "cannons away." That is, if you knew how to fire the contraptions.
