The Linden Snowball Fight

Winter offers many kinds of activities, from skiing, to sledding, to skating, snowman building, and more. But there's nothing quite like a good 'ol snowball fight. And one Second Life tradition is the Linden Snowball fight between the residents and Linden Lab's finest. This year, the snow scrap had a different twist to it. Bixyl Shuftan was there, and took a few pictures, and observations.

Weekend in Brief

Quite a bit happened this weekend. On Friday December 15, the Linden Snowball Fight took place. It would also be the closing day of the Team Diabetes Winter Showcase. There were other events, such as the Riny Carolers at Mieville on Saturday December 16, and the "Christmas at Wild Castle" party on Sunday December 17.

We'll have more on some of these stories, and more, when time's available to report in detail.

Linden Snowball Fight This Friday

For those wanting to toss a little "Christmas cheer" at Linden Lab's finest in the form of a snowball, or just in the mood for a good snowball fight, now's your chance. It was recently announced in the Linden blog that the next Linden (and Mole) Snowball Fight is this Friday, December 15. Or rather, two fights. The first will be at 8 AM SL time, and last for an hour (at least officially). The second will be at 12 PM SL time.

‘Tis the season for some snow-slinging shenanigans at the NEW Winter Wonderland Snowball Fight Arena!

Get your warm clothes and throwing arms ready - it’s time for a Lindens and Residents snowball fight! This snowball showdown means you're free to pelt your fellow Second Life Residents and Lindens with a bevy of sparkling snowballs - launched fresh from the snow-arsenal available at the arena.

The battles take place on Friday, December 15th from 8am to 9am PT and then again from 12pm to 1pm PT. Spots are limited, so be sure to get there early to grab your free snow-launching weaponry from the vendors around the arena.

Mark your calendars, assemble your dream squad, and be there!

While the snow scraps officially last for an hour, people often linger for longer.

Remember, the fun is this upcoming Friday, December 15, at 8 AM and Noon SL time.

Reader Submitted Pictures: At The Linden Snowball Fight

Zada Bury is known for her "Drivers in SL" videos. Though when she dropped by the Linden Snowball Fight last month, she decided to document her fun. She sent the Newser a few pictures, as well as links to a couple videos.

Cartoon of The Day

Taken at the Linden Snowball Fight. Looks like Zada Bury isn't expecting much from Santa this year, but isn't too concerned about it.

Linden's Winter Wonderland Open, Linden Snowball Fight

A few days ago, the Lab announced their Winter Wonderland area was open

Winter Wonderland is back in all its beautiful glory with interactive fun that you won’t want to miss! Start your adventure in the Village of Lights, then make your way to snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice-skating, and of course, the snowball fight arena. These activities are more fun with friends - so grab your besties and plan to spend a few hours catching everything that Winter Wonderland has to offer. If you’re in the mood for something a bit quieter after all that running around, take a breathtaking trip on the Ferris Wheel and catch incredible views of the twinkling lights and shimmery snow. You may be prompted to opt in to the Winter Wonderland experience in order to participate in the activities - be sure to read and accept the experience.

You can get in through the Portal Park hub that can teleport you to this and several other Linden areas. But when I tried it, it was glitched. But I was able to teleport directly to there at Winter Wonderland 2 (154/230/57).

Also the Lab mentioned an event many residents have been looking forward to all year: The Linden and Resident Snowball Fight.

‘Tis the season for some snow-slinging shenanigans at the Winter Wonderland Snowball Fight Arena.

The battles take place on Monday, December 19th from 10am to 11am PT and then again from  2pm to 3pm PT. Spots are limited, so be sure to get there early to grab your free snow-launching weaponry from the vendors around the arena.

A reasonably strong computer is recommended as the place will be crowded with plenty of lag. The snow scrap takes place at the snowball fight arena at Winter Wonderland 5 (113/7/31). You can also show up any time with friends and have a match of your own.

Linden Snowball Fight Tomorrow, Friday Dec. 20

Have you wanted to toss a snowball at one of Linden Lab's finest? Well, tomorrow you're getting your chance. On the official Second Life blog yesterday, the Lab announced this month's Linden Snowball Fight.

Tis the season to let it go and get into some icy fun at the Winter Wonderland Snowball Fight Arena for some snow-slinging fun times!

Get your warm clothes and throwing arms ready - it’s time for a Lindens and Residents snowball fight! This Snowball Showdown means you're free to pelt your fellow Second Life Residents and Lindens with a bevy of sparkling snowballs- launched fresh from the snow-arsenal available at the arena.

The frozen frenzy will take place twice on Friday December 20. The first will be from 10 to 11 AM. The second will be from 2 to 3 PM. To get there, head to Portal Park, then look for the doorway with the Winter Wonderland sign. It is suggested that you get there early and have a good computer as the event will probably be crowded.

Linden Snowball Fight Today

The residents of Second Life have something of a love/hate relationship with the Lindens. We're grateful for them creating and maintaining this virtual world. But some of their decisions over the years often make us wonder. If you've ever wanted to toss a snowball at them, now's your chance. Today is the Linden Snowball fight.

Come one - come all to the Snowball Arena for a friendly ice battle of epic proportions! This Snowball Showdown means you're free to pelt your fellow Second Life Residents and Lindens with a bevy of sparkling snowballs! But the Lindens and your fellow Residents get to return fire with their own avalanche of snow-arsenal.

The event lasts from 11AM to 1PM SL time. So head to Portal Park, then head to the Winter Wonderland area, and head to the Snowball Fight Arena. If you miss this event, you may have to wait months until another chance comes.

Scenes From The "Snowball Showdown"

On Friday November 15, the "Snowball Showdown" took place at the Snowball Fight Arena. From 11AM to 1PM that day, the snowballs flew at the area designed for friendly melees in the Winter Wonderland location. The area was accessible from the Portal Park sim. Once at the arena, there was a board describing the two or three weapons available, depending on whether one had a regular or premium account. For regular accounts, the riffles offered rapid fire, but the pistols fired rounds that would toss someone in the air. One would click on the display of weapons to pick up the snow gun HUD.

I arrived a bit late, so didn't see any Lindens. But there were still a number of residents pelting one another in the arena, with plenty of places to sneak around, or fire from above.

Another Luskwood Fox whom just landed after being launched in the air. For those who missed the melee, don't worry. Last winter there was a second Snowball Snowdown a few months into the year.

Linden Lab's Winter Wonderland Returns, Date Set for "Snowball Showdown"

On Wednesday November 29, Xiola Linden posted of the official Second Life blog that their "Winter Wonderland" area, accessible from Portal Park, was once again open. Attractions there include the Village of Lights, the Winter Snow Track, the Ice Skate Arena, the Ferris Wheel, and the favorite of most: the Snowball Fight Arena.

Also announced was the date of a Second Life tradition: the time of the "Snowball Showdown," or the "Linden Snowball Fight" as it used to be called.

Holidays have traditions - the gathering of families, the giving of gifts, the food and merriment, and - in our case - the Linden/Resident Snowball Showdown! This is your chance to arm yourself with some sweet snow-slinging artillery, take to the sparkling ice, and attack your friends, fellow Residents, and some Lindens with snowballs galore! But, you had better be prepared to get pummeled in return, because much of the joy of the holidays is giving - even if that means giving someone a snowball sandwich when they are least expecting it. Join us at the Snowball Fight Arena on Friday - December 15th from 11 am to 1 pm (SLT) and prepare to get pummeled!

The Linden Snowball Fight and The "Skunk Aid"

Quite a bit has happened in Second Life lately, and we haven't had time to tell it all. Two fun events that happened recently had to wait until now. One was the "Snowball Showdown," better known as the "Linden Snowball Fight," which took place on Friday March 17. The one last December was part of the "Jolly Holiday Crawl." This time, the snowball splatting stood on it's own as Lindens and residents slugged it out it the arena in the Winter Wonderland arena.

As it took place on St. Patrick's Day, the arena was lit with green lights, giving the event an "Emerald Isle" flavor. The hat on the arena monster, which occasionally popped up, added to it as well. But the main event were all the lindens and moles, including a certain one whom was recently hired. There were two separate snowball scraps, and at each for an hour the frosty missiles flew. But at the end, the Lindens bade the residents a friendly farewell. At least until the next showdowns next winter.

A couple days later was the "Skunk Aid" event for the "Relay Rockers" Relay for Like team. One of the things teams can do one another for fun this year is to "skunk" one another thanks to "Stinky the skunk." When the Rockers got "skunked," they decided to hold a "Skunk Aid" party. The event took place in the Arinultra Cay sim.

A number of Relayers showed up for the two hour event. While Stinky himself never showed up, a number showed up in skunk avatars, such as Gem Sunkiller (pictured above), and Team Sunbeamer's captain Rita Mariner. The Rockers got a couple days knocked off their "skunked" time period. There was also a contest won by Nulala Maracas, who showed up not in a skunk avatar but a skunk suit.

A Busy Weekend

Quite a bit happened this weekend. If one counts Friday, there was the Linden Snowball Fight and the Team Sunbeamers party. But there was the Giant Snail Cross-Sim Race (see below), The VWBPE (Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education) Press Day (picture above), the event itself starting on March 29, the Relay Rockers "Skunk Aid" party, and more.

We've gone into detail about the Sunbeamer party. More on one or more of the others later.

Cartoon of the Day: Canned Linden

Taken at the Linden snowball fight/Snowball showdown. Among the Lindens there was a relatively new one, Mazidox Linden, who went around in a spray can avatar. Actually, how he left his old job is unknown, but when you go about in a can avatar, one "can" expect some kind of ribbing. What "Pesticide Sprayer" means, I can only guess at.

Scenes From The "Jolly Holiday Crawl" And The Linden Snowball Fight

A week ago, on Monday December 19, the "Jolly Holiday Crawl" took place across several locations across Second Life. Organized by Linden Lab, the venue crawl turned out to be a hit with the residents. But one could do more than just talk to the Lindens. At the "Snowball Showdown," better known to the residents as the Linden Snowball Fight, the frozen missiles flew.

The "Jolly Holiday Crawl" And "Snowball Showdown"

Remember the "Creepy Crawl" Linden Lab organized on Halloween? It seems the event's been such a success, they're doing a Christmas-themed venue-hopping event, the "Jolly Holiday Crawl,"combined with the "Snowball Showdown."

It’s beginning to look a lot like the holidays have taken over a good portion of the grid. Everywhere you look, there’s snow, lights, and so many wintery delights that all you can do is sip a peppermint latte and smile. And then join us for some thrillingly chilly fun festivities inworld on Monday the 19th, starting at 10 am SLT and ending in a snow-flinging frenzy where Lindens and Residents can frolic in an ice castle, pelting the hail out of each other at the Snowball Showdown!

The Crawl goes from 10AM to Noon SL time, taking place at four locations with half-hour intervals. The places are "The Arctic Express," "Kate's Whirl," "The Winter Ice Christmas Festival," and "Frisland."

Following the Holiday Crawl comes the "Snowball Showdown," which in previous years was called the "Linden Snowball Fight," taking place at Linden Labs' Winter Wonderland area. The location of the place has yet to be published by the Lab, though in previous years it was accessible from Portal Park so it can be assumed the snowball fight arena can be reached from there: Portal Park 1 (175/118/52)

Linden Snowball Fight: Pics and Video

Second Life Newser wasn't able to attend the Linden Snoball Fight yesterday, but Daniel Voyager did.

Over 70 residents attended this morning for a massive snowball fight with the Lindens over at Winter Wonderland in Second Life. Many well known Lindens including Torley, Dee, Governance, Keira, Michael and many more dropped in to have fun with the community after many years of waiting. The event started around 10am SLT and ended after midday with a victory for the residents.

Daniel has more pictures of the snowball fight on his Flickr page.
