SL Video: Drax Files: World Makers "Episode 44: Istanbul University"

(Click here if the video fails to play)

From Draxtor Despress on April 10, 2017, "Professors Tuncer Can and Irfan Simsek from Istanbul University use the virtual universe of Second Life with hundreds of students every day.

"Why? They would probably cite the fact that SL empowers students from all over the world to rise above their own expectations: 'The freedom that students have through their avatars and their ability to create worlds in the context they need in the classroom can not be found anywhere else!' is their paraphrased credo that keeps coming up in conversation.

"For almost 10 years now Tuncer and Irfan use Second Life to train English teachers in the physical classroom and via remote instruction: students collaborate in role-play, do homework or film Machinima to use as custom supplemental materials.

"But Tuncer and Irfan don’t stop there: Educational technologists who study to become advisors on digital learning platforms in other schools and universities, examine the advantages [and pitfalls] of using SL in the classroom by designing proof of concept games for math instruction and climate change.

"Istanbul University with its 200.000 students is the city’s oldest university, founded in 1453, and a perfect example of how Second Life can work in education - when used by passionate teachers who are embracing the unique affordances of a world where boundaries collapse and cultural exchange is not only possible but an essential feature.

"As the buzz about how VR is going to revolutionize education is growing, it may be useful to remind ourselves: there is a digital world out there, used by countless educational institutions day in day out, ripe with possibilities and not going anywhere!

Announcement: Free Dance Lessons at LEA1

Dances in Real Life offer Free Dance Lessons; Dances in Second Life should too!

The essence of our Dance 101 class is to recreate that same social experience, educational experience, and just plain fun experience.   Our class is self-guided 24x7, but the real fun comes with our Live Instructor classes.

New LIVE INSTRUCTOR Dance Classes have been scheduled at LEA1 for Thursday, September 1, at 7PM SL time, Tuesday Sept. 6 at 2PM SLT, and Monday Sept. 12 SLT.  They will be held at our 1940s themed venue, CP Swing, located in the heart of Swing City - our 1940s themed city within LEA1.

These FREE Dance Classes have a new LIVE class format featuring two songs per dance, and an additional break between songs to allow for costume changes.  We have been delighted to see some of our participants wanting to change costumes along with the instructors, which has added a new dimension to the class experience.   Come learn six of the most popular dances in SL, meet new people, and dance with them!

While you are here, be sure to check out our other exhibits.  Jardines de Baile offers a Dance 101 classroom next to Club Nocturno, recreating a Mexican seaside resort experience.  Gardens Park provides a beautiful setting to practice your dances.  And our Education Center provides an overview of our 2LDance.org mission and vision, and what went into creating our LEA1 venues.

Burn2 "Burniversity-athon" Event

The Burn2 group is having an event today, with what they call the first of their "Burniversity," or rather their "Burniversity-athon." Here, one can get a few lessons on building, and what to expect at the real Burning Man art festival, which Burn2 is based on.

It may be June, but for us it's back to school -- Burn2 style. Join us at our very first Burniversity-athon, this Saturday, the 9th of June 2012. Here's the whole schedule!

9a-10a SLT – DMV workshop with EmCee Widget: How to build a basic art car.

10a-11a SLT – Burning Man 101 with Ronon Carver: How to prepare for Burning Man – what to take, what to expect, basic survival, questions and answers.

12n-2p SLT – Sound and Lag with Lorin Tone: How to use sound effectively in your builds.

2p-3p SLT – Poetry Workshop with Jilly Kidd.

3p-4p – Synchronized performances with Klark Harvy: How to create synchronized performances in Second Life. The first half hour is a demonstration of synchronized male dancers; the second half hour is a discussion of how to create these synchronized performances.

Come and join us, and get the jump on Burn2!

There was no location given as to where in Deep Hole the event was (this location was once their information tent): Burning Man Deep Hole (96, 6, 25).

M&M Creations:

Second Life Newser talked with 10 Goosson of M&M Creations about what has been happening at her store: M&M Creations. “M&M Creations just keeps steady and growing,” 10 explained, “There's a lot to tell. ... I’ll make it a short list.”

* The scenery screens have been deleted. After three years of selling those, the interest and needs were gone.

* Part of the main mall has been taken by the tree shop with all trees repacked with a temporary rez. So click, see and buy, or leave. Easy and much better than walking over the entire island and not being able to find what you are looking for.

* The flowershop, same story. The flowers have all been repacked, and some new shapes (sepals) have been added, with temporary rez as well. I dusted all flowers this way and was surprised about what I've created last three years.

* The landscaping shop has had a small transformation as well. It's filled, again a fast and easy way to see all builds rezzed, by using the good TP-system to visit the object you want to see.

* Marcthur is still releasing the Antique builder-packs. Those seem to be very popular.

* M&M Fashion will get more time and attention. Full Permission outfits with all materials used are very new in Second Life. Especially because all creators are so anxious about their goods being copied or stolen. We ignore the fear and keep making new things Full Permission to help designers of any level with good stuff to create great objects/outfits.

* It was time to create a new Tutorial: Fit & Wear Fashion Sculpts. A lot of questions about it and it isn't easy. So this tutorial is almost finished.

* In the line of this new tutorial, I will give the other three (and the new one of course) in-world and will schedule these. There has been a long running event in June: Tutorials. So, classes, classes and classes (this time on our islands platform with the possibility to rez, all people who will participate, can build right at the spot)

* I changed the island that much, only a few parts are now recognizable as they were.

- The fairyland has more wetland and has a huge cave with colorful scenes, all fantasy-flowers, fairy-like landscaping items, etc., are rezzed. I'm still amazed I built this all myself and I wonder around at midnight. The stage is wide and open next to the seaside with some quiet, hidden, corners to relax.

- We embraced Annika Designs with her low-prim builds (caves, waterfalls, etc.) so she has a place to rez a few of her great builds.

* Marc is also renewing the oldies. The cherubs have lighting shades and a very special copper texture. They really do look amazing.

* New fashion sculpts are made of course. Some of those oldies are renewed, because they needed the newest skills of the creator (smile).

10's 4rth Tutorial was released in the beginning of June, like all the others, free of charge. They have also been taking part in the gridwide Madpea Hunt.

Always improving, always striving to do better, M&M continues to offer shoppers high quality sculpted outdoor products. And 10 Goosson is still personally helping those new to building to become better at it.

M&M is at the Double MM sim: Click Here for the SLURL.
