Cartoon of the Day: Lightsaber Accidents Before Class

Taken at the VWBPE Keynote. Holstering a weapon on one's back can be tricky. When done with a sword or gun, it can be seen like cloth over it or poked through the clothes. But as a lightsaber can do damage just by touching, it this case it looks like it got shoved in, either by an enemy or a training accident. So why wouldn't it be removed? Memories of life in the education system made me think of one possible reason.

Spanish With Eugenia

While a small majority of Second Life's residents come from English-speaking countries, others come from countries where it's not so commonly spoken. Plus in real life many people from other lands move to those countries. So it's often a good idea to try to learn a little about another language. Among the various exhibits at the Second Life Birthday was that of "Spanish With Eugenia," a language class by Eugenia Calderon. The Newser met up with her and had a few words with her about it.

 From Draxtor Despress on April 10, 2017, "Professors Tuncer Can and Irfan Simsek from Istanbul University use the virtual universe of Second Life with hundreds of students every day.

"Why? They would probably cite the fact that SL empowers students from all over the world to rise above their own expectations: 'The freedom that students have through their avatars and their ability to create worlds in the context they need in the classroom can not be found anywhere else!' is their paraphrased credo that keeps coming up in conversation.

"For almost 10 years now Tuncer and Irfan use Second Life to train English teachers in the physical classroom and via remote instruction: students collaborate in role-play, do homework or film Machinima to use as custom supplemental materials.

"But Tuncer and Irfan don’t stop there: Educational technologists who study to become advisors on digital learning platforms in other schools and universities, examine the advantages [and pitfalls] of using SL in the classroom by designing proof of concept games for math instruction and climate change.

"Istanbul University with its 200.000 students is the city’s oldest university, founded in 1453, and a perfect example of how Second Life can work in education - when used by passionate teachers who are embracing the unique affordances of a world where boundaries collapse and cultural exchange is not only possible but an essential feature.

"As the buzz about how VR is going to revolutionize education is growing, it may be useful to remind ourselves: there is a digital world out there, used by countless educational institutions day in day out, ripe with possibilities and not going anywhere!

The Philosophy Class: Looking for Spinoza

While school is usually associated with childhood and young adulthood, education doesn't end there. People self-teach in libraries and bookstores all the time. But sometimes an instructor is necessary, and so people go back to college or attend an adult education class. Such classes also exist in Second Life, including Professor Bergson's Philosophy Class. For nine years, Gemma Cleanslate has been attending, and a new semester is about to start. This year, the theme is "Looking for Spinoza." So who was Spinoza and why does the Professor consider him important?

Philosophy Class: "Why Science is Right"

September is when many college students go back to class in real life. In Second Life, it's also the start of a new semester of Professor Herman Bergson's Philosophy class. Gemma Cleanslate, a returning student, had a few things to say about this new term and it's theme, "Why Science is Right."

Philosophical Landmark: Professor Bergson's 500th Philosophy Class

Education in Second Life can take many forms. There are museums one can attend. If one wants something more involved, there are classes one can attend. For Philosphy, Professor Herman Bergson teaches a class, and has been at it for a while. Yesterday marked his 500th class, and the professor isn't done yet.

Herman Bergson's Philosphy Class Begins, Again

Second Life isn't just a place to party and play games. One can also take part in adult education classes. One such class is run by Herman Bergson, whom teaches philosophy. Having taught almost five hundred classes, he gets a number of students every year. Among his students are Gemma Cleanslate, whom wrote about the beginning class of this semester as he moved on from Western to Chinese Philosophy.

Surprise Visit in SL10B

Since the SL10B is still going on this week, I logged into the History site in Beguile sim to check on what was going on. If you have visited you know that the arrival point is the good old corral of the early days. To my surprise the corral was full!! Many avatars were sitting on the ground. 

 

As I surveyed the avatars, I saw that almost all were newbies. Thanks to Fran Gustav, a greeter and host,  I learned it was a university language class visiting Second Life for the first time. The instructor, Pionia Destiny, brought them to here as part of the class. I supplied her with some landmarks and information and tagged along. What fun! 

 

Their first stop was to the Welcome Center where they picked up all the goodies there and learned how to change their appearance. Then with some instructions, she set them free to roam. It was joy to watch.

Herman Bergson's Philosophy Class

The summer break is over and our Philosophy class is about to begin again. Last semester we completed a study of “The Utopia of the Free Market.” You can read the lectures and discussions at http://thephilosophyclass.blogspot.com/.

Herman Bergson, our Professor is ready with a new theme for the coming semester which begins the first week of September. I asked what would be the philosophical lectures of the coming semester and he told me, “Like Communism as an economic system collapsed, so is Capitalism now. We have to face the question 'What next?' In this project we'll investigate and analyze what is wrong with neo-liberalism and what alternatives we'll have.”

The classes in Second Life go back to 25 September of 2007, meeting twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00PM SL time for about 1 hour, and you are all invited to join. I have been attending since almost the beginning and had learned a great deal about philosophers and their philosophies.

Although I have missed some of the classes it is easy to keep in touch with the lectures at the website above so if you would like to join don’t worry, you will not lose credits if you miss a class or have to leave early. Don’t be put off by the theme. He makes it easy to understand and you are invited to ask questions and add comments at the close of each lecture.

Syzygy University

Syzygy University is the latest improvement to be added to the Syzygy Community. The University is located at Syzygy Eos (89, 21, 1326).

Built by Syzygy resident B.W. Jinxings, SU has all the latest in modern technology, including TV camera and monitors. The classroom is spacious and airy.

Last week fellow Syzygy resident Elric Anatine presented the first class on SL Photography. Notes, including screen shots of the best viewer settings, can be found at http://www.syzygycommunity.com/support/tutorials-how-to/viewer-settings-for-sl-photography. Or, you can go into the classroom and touch the blackboard for a direct link to the webpage.

In case you need a pick-me-up to get through your SL day, there are Red Bull and Coke dispensers outside the classroom, too. You won't need them to stay awake in the Syzygy classes, however, as they are awesome!

Be careful, however, when walking around the grounds. Odd creatures are springing up from the lawn and sewer. It's also possible to fall off the edge of the skybox. Or perhaps one of those creatures pushed me. In any event, beware!

The next class will be May 20, 2012 at 11:00 AM SLT. Dr. Anatine will be presenting a class on "Taming Your Inventory". We all know how out of control that can get!

The University is free and open to all SL residents.

Philosophy Class: "The Mystery of the Brain"

Summer break is over. Back to the studies. This is the 5th year of Philosophy classes in sl and I have not graduated yet, but have not been dismissed either!

Professor Herman Bergson is opening his classroom again this year starting with the 341st class. We have been through so many rewarding projects over the years: 100 Philosophers, 25+ Women Philosophers, 25 Adventures in Thinking, Modern Theories of ethics, The Ideal State, Political Philos., and presently The Mystery of the Brain. Of the present project he says, “ I have done a number of projects, but the present one, still "The Mystery of the Brain", is my most cherished one, because it is the direct follow up of the thesis I defended in 1977 at the university."

If you are interested in the study of philosophy with lectures and lively discussion every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00pm SL time in his lecture hall at Wainscot. The classes usually last about 50-60 minutes. Come visit and listen then you can join the group is you like. You are always welcome.
