Press Release: Cultural Diversity Day

 

CULTURAL DIVERSITY DAY - Observed May 21st - ALL INVITED


Essentially, cultural diversity is about bringing people together from a diverse set of backgrounds and cultures, then creating an environment that not only recognizes the differences between those cultures and backgrounds, but celebrates them. It helps create a space for people to be authentically themselves.

International Cultural Diversity Day is a day set aside annually to celebrate and appreciate the different cultures and backgrounds of people all over the World.  Everyone should be respected and included no matter where you're from, the language you speak, what your beliefs are, the color of your skin, your age, your disabilities or gender.

SecondLife is a platform made up of people from many different cultures, traditions and beliefs so for us, this day will be a time to recognize the beauty of our uniqueness from within our continents, to mainland and even to the grid in general.

Crowne Heights Community is a community themed in the 1950s. Our diversity event will be held in the streets of that location. We invite and encourage all backgrounds of people to come and explore, visit and celebrate with us.  We will hold social events and gatherings throughout the year to help bring people together to celebrate as one.

A Biological Perspective on Mating Dynamics in a Sex Ratio Imbalanced Population

The basic tenet of biology is reproduction to continue the species. Evolution and genetics has programmed every species’ to follow behaviors to ensure the next generation. This genetic programming influences the mating game between the sexes in those species even in “higher” cognitive species such as humans. The interplay between conscious and subconscious driven behaviors is increasingly complicated to understand as society becomes increasingly complicated compared to “cave-man” days. One aspect of human biology without intervention is that the birth rate of male to female is 50/50. One aspect of most historical and modern societies is a cultural trend towards life-long pair bonding being encouraged and even legally enforced in some cases. Research has suggested a correlation to economic and social stability in such monogamy encouraged societies.

China and India are notable case exceptions to the gender balance. Cultural practices has lead to an overabundance of men. These have important consequences for the mating game in those countries now and the foreseeable future. Japan similarly has had cultural practices leading to a current stagnation of dating today, developing the monikers: dating “‘herbivores” and “celibacy syndrome”

This presentation will explore initially the biology of sexual reproduction in vertebrates and humans, the development of monogamy practices in history, then look to reconcile or at least understand better the current society/cultural situation in these countries.

BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man culture and community into the world of Second Life. Building is in full swing for our October event, themed “The Great Unknown,” as Burn2 follows the same Burning Man art theme each year.  As is tradition every year, artists and creatives are invited to get their plots and create homes and art installations in our virtual temporary city.  For 2021, we have double the size of our past virtual playa with a total of 12 regions - plenty of space for seasoned and new Burners to build their art, theme camps, and even camp villages.  So collect some friends and join together to make your scene on BURN2’s virtual playa, 2021!  Yes, you can group build and make a great village or art installation come alive and share it with friends. Only a few days left until the build period closes!

This year’s theme, The Great Unknown, is Burning Man’s 2021 theme and we are presenting this as BURN2’s theme for our annual October burn at BURN2.  Did you participate in Virtual Burn Week? If yes, bring it out again to BURN2 in October. We’ll help Burners bring their 3D builds into Second Life, help campmates decompress on our Playa, and we can help you with some supplies that you can decorate as your own.  Take your virtual theme camp to another level by creating events or gatherings in your space and we can post the activity to our website in our version of the Who/What/Where Guide.  We have a large Burner community at BURN2 eager to burn with you and we are excited to see what you will bring out to the virtual Playa and share with us!  Check out more at www.burn2.org. Plot Sale
Our plot sale in its last few days! While the deadline was the 29th of September, we are extending it through Sunday, October 3rd. Burn2’s plot sale is equivalent to buying a ticket to camp on the Playa.  This helps to pay for the cost of renting the sims in Second Life®.

Apply for our Plottery if you find you are unable to afford a plot, but you want a place to call your home on the Playa.

Create a Small Art Display
Big art sounds intimidating?  We are inviting Burners to contribute small-scale art that will be displayed across the Playa. You can sign up on this page. Meanwhile, put on your art beret, fire up the sketchbook or mesh build apps and add your bit of creativity to this event.

Gift Your Talents in Tunes and Dance
Not into building virtually?  Burn2 has three official stages for performers: Main Stage, BOB Stage, and Center Camp at Burn2. Visit our website for information on how you can join the event as a DJ, live mixer, live musician or singer.  The stage times are first come, first served. And all camps aka “plots'' have their own sound stream and can create their own stage. You can even do your thing inside your camp space and invite others to join you, of course.  Want to read, interview someone, have poetry readings?   You can do that with a live stream or in local voice chat.

 

And, last but not least...the Man will Burn! And we will also burn a beautiful Temple, a space that we hope you will enjoy similar to the experience you get from being in the presence of a temple on a physically dusty Playa.

"The Artist's Palette" Begins March 10

On Friday, March 10 at 8AM sl time, 'The Artist's Palette' will open its first event at Sunset Mist Town Square.  The theme of the said event is about color, creativity and culture.

This month, it is inspired by the celebration of diversity and the rejection of racial discrimination in all forms. The organizers and designers,  aim to showcase their work to be able to share information and education amongst the residents. And through this, we may be able to help each other in understanding one's culture and life.

The Artist's Palette will hold regular events in Secondlife every other month starting this March.

From Draxtor Despress, "'I just like making things and see how other people enjoy them!' summarizes virtual entrepreneur Nylon Pinkney her enthusiasm about her work in Second Life. Over 10 years now she has been shaping SL culture through her unique art and products: not only clothing and wacky accessories like the wiggling wedding cake are on offer, Nylon has also dabbled in Machinima as well as offering custom SL/RL portraits. Prominent fans such as US comedian Drew Carey frequently profess their admiration for her on social media sites, but Nylon Pinkney does not see herself as a celebrity.

"'When I discovered Second Life in my early twenties what got me hooked was the fact that I can be my own boss, that I can be authentic and when people actually started to buy my stuff - which is so different than the usual Barbie & Ken type products at the time - it felt really good!' And in response to the negative perception of a virtual 'anything goes' universe in some quarters Nylon takes a common sense approach: 'Flickr can be pretty weird if you look for that stuff, but it also has beautiful art. Same is true for Second Life: where ever you want to go!' "

DJ Micah's Club Culture

Grease Coakes is back telling of a new club in Second Life. Club Culture, by DJ Micah, promises to be a place about music rather than flashy lights. Grease talks a little about Micah, and the club which he's set some higher standards for.

Interview With Frolic Mills

For several years, the inworld magazine "Best of Second Life" entertained it's readers with it's pictures of ladies in fashionable dresses and stories about culture, society, and other subjects about the Grid. All this time, it was under the direction of the same owner: Frolic Mills. Less than a month ago, Frolic announced his decision to retire, and now the magazine is in new hands. In an interview with Bixyl Shuftan, Frolic had a few things to say about his time at the magazine, and why he felt it was time to move on.

SL Enquirer: Stalkers in Second Life - Welcome to the Dark Side

A few years ago we incredulously witnessed the news of a SL romance ending in real life stalking, attempt kidnapping and crime of virtual passion. Cases like this are increasingly recurrent.

In Second Life stalkers see their art made easier with more ways to torment people and with more amenities to hide behind the screen, a supposedly safe and consequence-free place to impetuously pour out their frustrations on others, therefore, exacerbating their actions.

The Portuguese Way

Gemma Cleanslate took a good look at a new exhibit at the Linden Endowment of the Arts area. At LEA19 is a tribute to the history and culture of Portugal: The Portuguese Wat. Beginning with the opening party attended by a number of artists, she made several trips to the place, once with her partner Qwark Allen who lives in Portugal. So what were some of the details that made the exhibit so memorable?

Bard on the Beach

Last weekend, DrFran attended "Bard on the Beach," an annual event involving the reading of various works of Shakespeare. Held at Crap Mariner's Nowhere sim in front of an audience of forty, much fun was had while the various participants went on stage and voiced their various parts from "Hamlet" to "The Tempest," to "Much Ado About Nothing." The event was held for the War Child charity.

Press Release: Ballet Pixelle Presents "The Nut"

Ballet Pixelle® will present it's holiday program "The Nut" opening December 2, 2012.

Ballet Pixelle® performs its version of the Nutcracker ("The Nut") for the sixth year this holiday season. "The Nut" is Ballet Pixelle's essence of The Nutcracker so you can see just the wonderful, and truly original, dances.

Does Clara become the Princess to her Nutcracker as he becomes the Prince of her dreams?  We see mysterious dances in the white castle.  Arabian dancers fly in on magic carpets.  A Russian Cossack stamps out a dance.  Russian dolls roll and play.  Chinese empresses and emperors and move on delicate feet and Spanish senoritas and senoras throw themselves flamboyantly.  A field of flowers waltz together.  And even snowflakes dance!

Join us for an evening of classic, and yet new, holiday delights.

Performances are Wednesdays at 2:00 pm and Sundays at 5:00 pm SLT throughout December and part of January in the Ballet Pixelle Theatre.

Culture and Fun

After several days offline due to a technical glitch, reporter Gemma Cleanslate is back in business. Last weekend, she attended an exhibition of a new group on the Grid, "Culture and Fun." They were showing off a number of paintings by Pan Yuliang, China's first modern artist.

Skin Burn: The Final Flare

The Man blazed  for one last time this year at Burn2 as the Skin Burn was held on the playa Saturday, and attendees wore only skin! NO scripts or attachments were allowed. All had a great time dancing around and watching as the flames spread up the Man, and then, we jumped on the remaining cinders as on a pyre and danced some more!

Burn2: The Temple Burn

Last Sunday November 4, the Burn2 festival came to an official close with it's last big event: the Temple Burn. Second Life Newser was there, and took a few pictures.

Press Release: Skin Burn

Burn2 isn't QUITE over yet!

Burning Man’s Ten Principles calls for Radical Self Expression. As part of that Self Expression, Burning Culture includes nudity and decorated nudity.

For BURN2, we see it as an opportunity to celebrate the Burning Culture while watching The Man burn under low lag conditions!

How? SKIN BURN!

We do this by having our Avatars wearing just skins, no prim attachments and minimal scripts, so we have minimal Avatar Render Weight (the former Avatar Rendering Cost, or ARC), slowing down the Virtual Playa server.

We first tried this in 2010; this event was an instant hit. We're bringing it back again to the Virtual Playa with the Skin Burn on November 10th! ! Below you will find the information for this years Skin Burn.

To get to the Skin Burn sim, one must be in the BURN2 Skin Burn Group and have the tag active.

Hope to see you there! REMEMBER, access is only available to a limited number of avatars! First come, first served! Alternate viewing of the Skin Burn will be from Elko.

Press Release: "Couleurs de la Danse" by Ballet Pixelle

Ballet Pixelle® will premiere its fourteenth original ballet "Couleurs de la Danse”, Sunday, September 23 at 5:00 pm. 

Performances will take place every Sunday at 5pm and Wednesday at 2pm at the Ballet Pixelle Theatre, through the month of October.

"Couleurs de la Danse" is a ballet about color...and dance.
There is no story, there is only movement.
A dashing and strong danseur in green with his vibrant green ballerina. 

A  quick and jazzy danseur in red with his fleet-footed and daring red ballerina. 

And a study in femininity and grace -- the lavender ballerina.
Then, a solo ballerina in white lace daintily follows the lines of the baroque violins.
And finally, red passion erupts!

"Windows" by the Ballet Pixelle

When one thinks of dancing in Second Life, ballet is not usually what comes to mind. But this example of culture and the arts can be found here on the Grid too. Gemma Cleanslate recently heard of a performance by the Ballet Pixelle named "Windows." So she went by to see it.
