More "May The Fourth Be With You"

Wednesday May 4 had it's share of Star Wars jokes, "May the Fourth Be With You." And yours truly was in with the humor by sporting this specialized stormtrooper armor. Made by Satch Flan, it was a limited edition I got at a Luskwood Star Wars event several years ago.

At DJ Mattie's set at the Fairechylde that evening (see above), at one point someone got into a "Scoutwalker." Thankfully it didn't dance and step on anyone. Guess that would be "Revenge of the Fifth."

Last Day For The SL17B

It's been a lot of fun, but the Second Life Birthday event is about to come to a complete close. After Midnight SL time tonight, the SL17B sims will be closed to the public. So now's your last chance to see any exhibits you might have missed.

There have been no more official events since Sunday June 28. But there have been some impromptu ones, notably the several on Tuesday July 7. There might be a few DJs playing on stage sometime today, though no guarantees.

Enjoy this last day of the SL17B.

Last Day To See The Relay Sims

There have been some years the Relay sims were up after the weekend until Friday. But sadly this year isn't the case. Today is the last day to get a chance to take a look at the various sims and team campsites, such as the Second Life Cheerleading Squad's, which had this fun playable tribute to Donkey Kong at RFL Promise (166/160/23).

But before the camps are taken down, there's a Relay tradition to take place, the Flood Party, which starts at 3PM.

The Flood The Regions & Wrap Up awards weill be held Wed. June 10 from 3 til 7 pm, on the beach @ http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/RFL%20RESEARCH/129/36/23

Join us for one last time on the Relay Regions and Track!

Wrap Up Awards will be announced During The Party
Listen Live on https://RelayRadio.t1radio.com

Bring A Floatie and Dress To Get Wet!

After the event concludes, teams are given the go-ahead to start taking down campsites.

Addition: As the Flood Party was starting, we heard from Linden Lab that the sims had a few more days. Unfortunately, some people, presumably mostly those who would be busy tomorrow, had already taken their camps down.

May The Fourth Be With You

May 4 has been occasionally referred to as "Star Wars Day." This is from "May the Fourth be with you" being a pun of "May the Force be with you." And in a few places, people were in full or partial Star Wars looks. At the Fantasy Faire, this guy was wielding a lightsaber. Considering his outfit looks suspiciously like a Star Trek redshirt, be better be extra careful with that thing.

I still had a set of Stormtrooper armor I picked up at Luskwood a few years ago. It was a better fit for my rabbit avatar than I was expecting. One girl had a similar idea with her Rebel uniform, and well, we ended up dancing.

May the Fourth be with you.

Happy Australia Day at "The Pocket"

January 26 is known as Australia Day in the land down under, and it was reflected in Second Life with the holiday being celebrated at a few Aussie clubs. Among them was "The Pocket," which has live singers performing every Friday night. And with the holiday happening in real life with many of the regulars, the place was in a party mood.

Shockwave Yareach’s Valentine Maze

DrFran Babcock, recently found a fun Valentine's Day themed attraction: the Valentine Maze by Shockwave Yareach. In the maze one hunts down candy hearts, though it's not as simple as it first looks. After looking the maze over, she found the builder and had a few words with him. This maze wasn't his first, and he plans to bring back an old favorite later this year.

Memorial Day in Second Life

Memorial Day is here, and for Second Life residents in the United States, time to take a few moments to remember the fallen Veterans of its wars, past and present.

Among the places with memorials, Southern Colorado sim has one, built by owner Daaneth Kivioq.

"Memorial day is upon us, and it is time to honor those who have selflessly served America - especially those who have fallen fighting in her honor. Several years ago I created a small memorial to them in Hope Gardens. I invite you to come visit it, and spend a few minutes remembering those who have sacrificed so much."

At the memorial, a plaque reads, "My angel, his name is Freedom - choose him to be your king. He shall cut pathways east and west, and fend you with his wing." - Ralph Waldo Emmerson

"Dedicated to all those whom have given life or limb in service of the Angel named Freedom."

Southern Colorado (129, 42, 25)

Probably the best known veterans' memorial in Second Life is the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. Created by Meme Science, modeled after the real life wall, it has over 58,000 names of those killed and missing from the Vietnam War. More information can be found at it's website: http://www.thewallsl.com/

To get to the Vietnam Wall, Click Here.

The Patriot Island sim is the home of a Veterans' group. Naturally, it has it's own memorial, one for those soldiers whose remains were never identified: The Tomb of the Unknowns.

The memorial is located at Patriot Island (111, 123, 29).

These of course are just a few memorials. Look for more.

Australia Day 48 Hour Benefit Raises Over 300,000L for Flood Relief

In recent weeks, Australia has been hit by record flooding. Thousands were forced to evacuate from towns and cities, three quarters of the state of Queensland declared a disaster area. A wikipedia entry stated the death toll was 35 dead with nine missing. Damage by the floods is at least one billion Australian dollars, estimates as to how high going as far as thirty billion.

Wednesday January 26 was Australia Day, when Australians celebrate the founding of their country. In Second Life, B&B’s in the Utopia and EnGedi sim decided to hold a two day live music event starting that day to raise funds to help those affected by the flooding. Four dozen musicians were participating, such as OhMy Kidd, Gina Gracemount, and the folk band SOAR.

Get set for the Australia Day Concert: 48 hours of fantastic LIVE entertainment from 12:01am on the 26th right through to 11:59pm on the 27th. There is an awesome line-up featuring some incredibly talented performers! You won't want to miss this.

When I dropped in on Thursday the 27th, I was greeted by over a dozen people dancing and listening to the music, led by B&B’s co-owner Bundy Xue.

♯♬♥♪♥♩♥♬♥ FLOOD RELIEF ♬♥♪♥♩♥♬♥♯
♯♬♥♪♥♩♥♬♥ BENEFIT 2011 ♬♥♪♥♩♥♬♥♯

Bundy continuously greeted visitors with a cheerful hello, and kept encouraging people to give to the fund. The goal was to raise 315,000 Lindens, which equals 1250 US Dollars.
Among the people there was noted SL blogger Nazz Lane. Cellandra Zon was also there.

“Bundy is such a sweetheart,” one person instant-messaged me, “She has worked soo hard for this benefit. She lined up all the musicians. She made sure everything was organized. And she has been here to work it too, and greet the people. AND she was here for almost all of the 24 hours! I think she took two 3 hour breaks, and that's IT.”

The event total was 293,000 Lindens when I arrived. Finally at 7:30 PM SL time. Cellandra Zon announced the total had passed 300,000, “THANK you, Grateful! THANK you Rayzer!” As the night went on, the total continued to rise. at 8:50 PM, it was announced that the goal of 315,000 Linden dollars raised had been met, “WONDERFUL WE HAVE CRACKED 1250 US$ Thank you all! (smile)” Dropping by the next day, the total on the board read 363,500 L.

The fundraising in Second Life has not gone entirely unnoticed by media outside the Grid. An Australian news site made a mention of the event: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/floods/8201695/.

The event was part of a larger fundraiser, which someone mentioned had so far raised a total of over 7000 US dollars. People wishing to contribute more can visit The Extend a Helping Hand Market, which according to a notecard passed at the event will be around until February 8th, "Money raised will be donated to the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal to assist those affected by the Queensland floods. ... You can join the Extend a Helping Hand Subscription Group to keep updated for the duration of the event, and to receive notifications when vendors release new donation items."

"Extend a Helping Hand is an event put together by Sanura Sakai to raise funds for the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal. The aim is to provide support and assistance to those Queenslanders affected by the recent massive flooding. She started organizing the event when it hit her home-town, and on the very first day of the market itself, it swept through her own city. 75% of Queensland, at the time of writing this, has been declared a disaster zone. Many have lost their homes, and some have even lost their lives.

"To read more about the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal, to which all funds raised by this event will go, please visit http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/. You can also donate directly, if you so desire, through the information provided on that site. To provide complete transparency to this process, transaction history for all donations will be provided at the close of the event at http://katjohnston.com. Kat Johnston is the real life name of Sanura Sakai, who will be running the event."

Another example of Second Life used to help people in real life.
