Weekend in Brief

Quite a bit happened this weekend. The big event was the Bay City Sixteenth Anniversary Celebration, which was it's yearly parade and after-parade dance party. Also going on were some Relay events, such as the Buccaneer's Ball. And the Raglan Shire Artwalk event, one of Second Life's largest annual art shows began this weekend.

More on these, and other, events later.

SL: Second Look

"SL: Second Look" is a unique event for sculptors and 3D artists. Artists will have a 31 days period of time, from Midnight of 14 August to 23:59:59 on 14 September (all times SLT). Artists may rez up to 100 Land Impact worth of parts, components, bits, etc. in a moderately-sized area.

What's the catch?

Aside from working in Blender, PhotoShop, GiMP or other programs, all of the building of the sculpture must be done inside the artist’s area.

And it is open for the public to watch them work, chat with artists, critique and ask questions, etc.! This is designed to be a fully-interactive (in terms of communication) race against the clock to come up with a wholly-original three-dimensional piece of art. Artists are encouraged to leave parts and components and bits out overnight, over several nights, over the four weeks.

What matters is the interactive aspects.

That's why it is SL: Second Look -- people can look at and observe and interact with the process of creating art, and then get a second look at the finished (or mostly finished) work!

Who are the artists involved in SL: Second Look?

"SL: Second Look" is a fully-interactive and unique event for you to watch, chat with, critique, ask qquestions and even (within reason) pester four sculptors and 3D artists:

1. Rage Darkstone
2. Proton d-oo-b
3. Isabelle Fisher
4. Marcel Mosswood
as they create a brand-new 3D work.

Any question? Contact Annie Scott-Siegel or Nils Urqhart.

Saturday, 25th May

10am - Bona Dea Ritual and Maypole Dance
Our festivals begin with a ritual for Bona Dea, "The Good Goddess" - Also known as Fauna, She is the daughter of Faunus, and a goddess of virginity, fertility, and healing. Bona Dea's rites included only women - even paintings or drawings of men or male animals were forbidden - but in our ROMA, the menfolk are welcome to Her rites. After the rite, we will have a traditional maypole dance, music, and picnicking!

Mercury isn't just the herald of the Gods - He's also the patron of merchants and commerce! So this Mercuralia, we will be honouring Him with a ritual on the roof of Trajan's Market! After the ritual, there will be Mercury's Treasure Hunt - Mercury has dropped His parcels and most of His money while flying home to Olympus! The pouches are now scattered throughout ROMA!  Can you help Him find them? But watch out - each pouch will give out only one prize, and then it will disappear. So you will have to be swift to find these elusive pouches before anyone else does!

Raglan Shire's Art Show

This month, the Tiny community of Raglan Shire gets more visitors than usual. The reason is their annual art show, which is publicized not just to it's local residents, but to all of Second Life. Both paintings and three-dimensional art are featured in the event lasting most of the month of May. Bixyl Shuftan went to take a look at the exhibits.

"1000 Avatar Project" to Close

Gracie Kendal, known as Kristine Schomaker in real life, announced yesterday her "1000 Avatar Project" will soon be taken down from the Grid. Starting in October 2010, she had taken her 1000th avatar picture by Jan 2011 and kept on going to 2000, which she reached later that year.

I want to thank you all so much for your love and support in following and being part of the 1000+ Avatar Project. I am so very proud of the work I have created here and I am glad I have been able to share it with the Second Life community. I think the work speaks for itself in showing the wonderful diversity that we all share here. The lives we create and live and the imagination that you all have shared shows that Second Life is much more than… well the media makes it out to be. I am proud to be a member of the Second Life community and I will continue to pass on its wonders, its capabilities and I will continue to forge ahead as one of the pioneers of this new media art form.

The project has gone through so much since it started in October 2010. I have published 2 books, the installation itself has moved several times and most recently I created a mixed reality installation/performance using a selection from the project in an exhibit in Los Angeles and Second Life.

The whole experience of shooting the portraits, working with my great friend Nikki on publishing the books, putting together the RL/SL art installation and standing back to see what I have done is something I will never forget. I have met so many amazing people along the way. more then 2000 of them )

Some people have asked me, why I don’t go for 3000 or 10,000 avatars now. At first I kind of laughed it off and said… we’ll see. But as with my paintings, I know when I am finished. It is just a feeling you get. You look at the work you have created and you just know. It is done.

One can read more about the "1000 Avatar Projec"t at http://1000avatars.wordpress.com/. One can also read about Gracie Kendal's "My Life as an Avatar" project at http://graciekendal.wordpress.com/.

Gracie's exhibits will remain up until June 3, 2012. Until then, people can check out her "100 Avatar Project" at the Coyote sim (95, 166, 1430), and her real-life/Second Life installation at Seraph City (137, 206, 107) where her recent performance art crossing the real and virtual worlds took place. On the last day, there will be a farewell party at both locations from Noon to 3PM SL time. It is open to all.

"Thank you again so much for your love and support!!"

SL Machinima: "Artwashers"

Artwashers from 2sense Productions

At the UWA's Open-Art Challenge last weekend, there was a contest for machinima. The one that took second place, written about by Rowan Derryth was the film "Artwashers," a clever parody about one advantage of a virtual art museum by Friday Siamendes.

"In many ways, though, this works the same way as visiting a gallery or museum. The work is physical, but we do not usually smell or taste it; and we usually don’t touch it either. In fact, virtual art is even MORE interactive–we can ‘touch’ is and be part of the work. And we don’t have to worry about caretaking and conservation in the same manner as physical work (although virtual works opens whole new problems in these areas). One of the machinima from the UWA challenge that I absolutely loved played upon these ideas was ‘Artwashers’ by 2sense Productions.

"By introducing us to the fictive cleaners at the UWA, the parody cleverly highlights how such a space is so much less complicated that a real museum, allowing the administrative energy to be focused on creativity and education. And that freedom to focus on the creative work has created a wonderful, happy accident."

Even those of us with a poor sense of the artistic can appreciate the humor. Well done, Friday.
