Burn2 Update

It is amazing that a whole year has passed since the 2011 Burn2 event. The playa is humming with activity as this year’s burners begin creating their builds on the six regions. That is two more than last year so there will be more to visit. The temple build is underway as is The Man. Stages are in progress also, to accommodate all the entertainers and djs that will spin for the many parties that will take place.

There are still many people in sl who have never experienced a burn. You can read the history of this event in SL at http://burn2.org/burn2-history. It will give you a background for your visits to the playa. In case you missed the dates, the Bur2n will be open from October 20 Noon SL time through October 28 11: 59. It sounds like a long time, but it will pass so quickly you will miss all the builds if you don’t save time to visit more than once.

I will be a ranger volunteer as I have since 2009. There are many opportunities to volunteer in some capacity. Take a look at the volunteer section in the blog and think about becoming a burner. There is a wealth of information in the blog that will appear as time passes. Keep it in your favorites. As we say to everyone who arrives on the playa, “welcome home.”

Opening day is coming soon!! ( the 18th of June) As an Exhibit Assistant I have had the privilege of helping the exhibitors get their plots going, setting music for them, chasing prims that flew across the sims and enjoying it all. It has been very busy!!

As I stood trying to do my work after meeting builders on their plot, they were throwing up creations right around my feet! Some were so excited to have their builds placed immediately. It was great fun. One prim became 250 in about 4 minutes! Some creators are still holding theirs in their sandboxes or or pockets til the last moment. But a look at the 20 sims on the map tells the story. Most plots are full.

The spirit of cooperation among the whole staff has been outstanding. The exhibitors for the most part have been so grateful for any assistance we could give them. It is a wonderful experience to be part of it all. I recommend you all set aside lots of time to visit. There are so many plots. 300 besides that, the stages for performers and for DJ parties, and an auditorium for meetings and learning. There is also a pod ride for the eastern and one for the western areas. Taking the ride will be fun as you will hear about some of the surrounding builds as you pass along the roads. You will find it near the entrance.

The birthday cake is a decoration to behold. It occupies the center of the whole 20 sims. Take a look at the map when you come and you will see it!

The Burn Begins

The Burn2 is off to a great start.The dates are October 1 through 9 and although it seems far away it will be here soon. Plots are being sold to builders and they are busy are working on their creations off the playa getting ready for their projects and are excited. I cannot wait to see the artistic visions for Rites of Passage, the theme of Burn2, 2011.

Any resident of Second Life who wishes to can be involved in some way. There are many opportunities for volunteering. Do not feel you may not have enough skill. There is training for you. The commitment of time should not bother you either. You will fit in somewhere for the time you would like to spend. You can visit the tent at Deep Hole to see all the possible groups to join.

As a Ranger, I have already started my training. I am also a Lamplighter so I can join in the lamplighter's parade when I am available. That is great fun! The greeters are wonderful helpers to new arrivals on the playa, assisting with questions about where to go and passing out gifts. The dpw has a lot of cleaning up to do during the burn.

People are also invited to loan or “donate “ a spare sim you may have to allow more space for the Burn2 builds. Your sim will be added to the 5 sims already at the Playa and returned to you at the end of the Burn. If you are not familiar with the Burn which used to be Burning Life in SL, visit the wiki - http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Burning_Life. This is the second year that the Burn is solely run by Second Life residents. The Leads are depending on you to make the Burn! You can visit the kiosks at the tent to sign up or just to get more information.

RFL “Bid Me Human” Event Nets 29,000 Lindens

That was, unexpected. I never expected the event to bring in so much.

The “Bid Me Human” event in Southern Colorado took in much more than I expected. Passionate Redheads team captain Sabine McGettigan thought 5,000. I thought 10,000. It netted 29,000!! The initial goal of five thousand Lindens was reached within twenty-four minutes. Sabine herself called it one of the biggest events for the Redheads this season.

The consequence, since I had stated I’d be in a human av a day longer for every thousand raised, the result was no "foxy" look for almost a month.

Well, most of the time. From the start, I had stated I’d be back to fox at the club I do some occasional hosting at, as well as the combat RP I’ve joined up with. I also explained I’d have to return to my usual appearance for any interviews, plus the special event happening this June 4th and 5th. So while there will be the occasional short break, I’ll be having this look for a while.

And why an ethnic human look? Well, griefers usually hate it as much as furball appearance. So why let the trolls have any fun. ;-)

Already having to go through a few shaved jokes from my furred friends. I’m sure the next few weeks will be interesting to say the least.

Relay For Life "Bid Me Human"

It was a couple years ago in which Daaneth Kivioq voulenteered for a "Bid Me Furry" event for the Passionate Redheads in which he offered to join the ranks of the furballs if people donated enough. 10,000 Lindens were raised, and he took on the look of a feline for a little while. Also about that time, another group did a "Bid Me Human" event in which a kitty offered to shed his fur coat and go human. Not as much was raised, though the girls at the event donated enough cash to make him furless.

With the Redheads needing a little more help after their recent troubles, I brought this up to some officers, and they liked the idea. Since it was my idea, well, guess it was only fair to volunteer.

Yep, that's right. "Fox News" is offering to be not so foxy for a little while.

The event will be at the Southern Colorado sim at (159, 36, 25) , Friday May 20th from 6 to 8 PM SL time.

“Tail Sale” at Club Zero

Nydia Tungsten recently announced the space club Club Zero gravity would soon be hosting it’s first “Tail Sale.” What is a tail sale? Nydia compared it to a flea market, in which volunteers put themselves up for bid offering activities such as drawing or building, or perhaps offer themselves up for a date with someone from the opposite sex. Winning bids will be split between the club and each volunteer.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Nydia Tungsten or YuliaV Resident. All entries must be in by February 25. The Tail Sale will start on March the 1st, and go on to March 17th.

Second Life Veteran’s Tribute

Coming up soon is the 2010 SL Veteran’s Tribute which will be held from Sunday, November 7th to Saturday, November 13th. This is the 4th annual Veteran’s Tribute that we have put together.

We are looking for Guides to help guests, monitor for inappropriate activities and behavior as well as to answer questions regarding the event. The Guides help on a volunteer basis only and there is no pay for any person that partipates in the Veteran's Tribute. Guides will receive a free uniform to wear when participating at the events. Guides will also receive "training" that last approximately one hour.

The Tribute itself is non-political and serves one purpose and one purpose only and that is to honor all the men and women that have given willing of their time to protect the lives we enjoy today.

The goal of the Tribute is to provide a non-political, content filled, educational, interactive SIM inside Second Life where men and women of all walks of life can visit and provide remembrance and honor to those who have served or currently are serving in the Armed Services.

The tribute operates on a zero dollar budget and are non-profit; the entire tribute is built, funded, organized and executed on a purely volunteer basis. We have an organized group on SL called the “SL Veteran’s Tribute” if you would like to look it up. This group will be used as the basis of our planning and scheduling for the Tribute.

The SL Veteran’s Tribute also collect donations for Operation Uplink (http://www.operationuplink.org/) which provides pre-paid phone cards for military personnel stationed overseas.

e-Volunteering

Ever wondered if it's possible to do meaningful volunteer work, even if you can't leave your house or bed?

It is!

The National Service Inclusion Project is going to share with us lots of information about virtual volunteering options. They will help us match our interests and skills to causes. We will learn about communication, accessibility, and support while volunteering.

The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) is training and technical assistance provider on disability inclusion, under a cooperative agreement (#08TAHMA001) from Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). NSIP partners with the Association on University Centers on Disability, National Council on Independent Living, Association on Higher Education and Disability and National Down Syndrome Congress to build connections among disability organizations and all CNCS grantees, to increase the participation of people with disabilities in national service.


The event is at Friday, October 15, Noon SLT at The Sojourner Auditorium on Virtual Ability Island at (56, 169, 23).

Rebar Ceremony on The Playa

The Rangers for Burn2, http://www.burn2.org/ , have finished our training. On Saturday the 25th, the Rebar Ceremony was held. The graduates gathered at the Ranger Headquarters on the Playa in anticipation of crossing the line. The address explained the symbolism of the ceremony.

In RL a long time ago, the first Black Rock Rangers took a step across a line in the desert. Ronan Carver said, “Danger Ranger took a stick, drew a line across the earth, and said ‘On the other side of this line, there exists a world where everything is different.’ Then everybody held hands and stepped across that line. The first settlers of Black Rock City had come to burn a wooden man. In doing so, they created a community.”

Rebar is the common anchor for tents and so the Rangers starting stepping over a length of rebar in 1996. Now the numbers of graduating Rangers are so large that the rebar is used to draw the line and the rebar is laid down at the end of the line at the Burning Man . “The important thing is what the rebar symbolizes. ..an anchor..”, said M2Danger Ranger.

So now we are ready and willing to help the community on the Playa! We have learned the skills to work with the community. Our community is busy building wonderful exhibits for the Burn2 week.(October 16 is the start.) It is exciting to watch it all grow from the soil upward. The Rangers are looking forward to it all!! Greeters and Guides for Burn2

Time is passing so quickly. The playa is alive with builders working on their wonders. The entertainment planning goes on so that there will be music and fun for all the visitors. Brigit Ranger , the Community Lead for Burn2 has put out a call for Greeters and Guides. She says, “My hope is to find people who are looking for fun, like to meet new people, and who know the meaning of patience and perseverance. “

It is great fun to be a greeter. I have watched as they weave their magic like trapeze artists at the gate to the playa . Their friendliness and help to new arrivals makes for a happy start to your exploration. A volunteer need only dedicate 6-8 hours for that week , October 16 through 25, on the Burn2 playa. You will probably want to spend more time.

Help Wanted at Burn2

The DMV (Department of Mutant Vehicles) of Burn2 is looking for volunteers. Artists and builders can all help with the creation of the fun vehicles that visitors to the Burn2 playa can pick up and drive around.

Part of the fun of the playa is getting ready for the Burn2 which will take place October 16th through the 24th . There are many other jobs to apply for that do not require building skills so don’t be shy. Greeters have a lot of fun. Lamplighters dance up the road every day and night. There are many who did not get a plot in the lottery but here is a way of being part of it all.. Volunteer!

The Burn2 Blog is posting the Volunteer application . For those interested you can fill out the application checking the job(s) you would like to do and submit it. There are many positions to be filled and you will have fun whether you have lots of time or just a few hours to dedicate. You can check some of the duties by clicking on various departments. The playa is alive during the Burn2 with activities going on all the time and magnificent builds to view.
