Yuri's Night
On Saturday, April 11, the National Space Society celebrated "Yuri's Night." The event, named after the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, is to celebrate milestones in manned space flight. The party was high above the Spaceport Bravo sim.
Yuri’s Night party happening now! Celebrate Yuri Gagarin, first person in space, with the International Spaceflight Museum and the National Space Society. DJ Aristippus spins space-themed tunes and songs of the Space Age. Futuristic, space-related or early '60s fashions are encouraged, but in no way required.
There were a mix of early 60s tunes, and space themed songs such as "Walking on the Moon," "Goodbye Cruel World," "Space Girls," and others. People either danced, or floated in the air, often in spacesuits.
There were a few topics, such as the Coronovirus Crisis, which may have caused one NSS member to skip the event, and some sadness over the lack of progress in manned space travel in recent years.
On another note, it was fifty years ago that the accident that crippled Apollo 13 and almost caused the loss of all aboard took place. It took a good deal of effort by both the astronauts and the ground crew to get the crew back to Earth in what would be called a "successful failure."

A Busy Weekend
It's been quite the busy weekend in Second Life. Friday was the "Yuri's Night" celebration held by the National Space Society. The anniversary of the first man in space was also one of the themes at the Burnal Equinox, which ran from Friday to Sunday night. There were also a number of Relay for Life events. Saturday had the Sunbeamer Air Show which launched Team Sunbeamers well into Gold level fundraising. On Sunday was the conclusion of the "Bid Me Bald" Team Challenge which raised a total of almost a half million Linden dollars in which the Cure Chasers team won and Mieville Steampunks ended up with bare scalps.
More information on these happenings, and more, to come.

Burnal Equinox Starts Today
The Burnal Equinox art and music festival starts today, Friday April 12. From today at 10 AM to Sunday at 11PM, the Spring Spinnoff of the Burn2 event will take place with many sights to see, and much tunes to listen to.
Burnal Equinox is our traditional event that we hold midway between our annual October “big Burn” events. This year the theme for the spring event is “Eyes to the Skies”. Creatives are invited to start thinking about tunes, writings and art to bring to the playa.
So, what is this “Eyes to the Skies” theme about? And when is the event? Glad you asked.
The next event of Burn2, Burnal Equinox, takes place the weekend of 12th through 14th April. As it happens, the opening coincides with a worldwide celebration of the first human to enter space, called Yuri’s Night.
So, how do we celebrate space, the Great Beyond, on the dusty dry desert lake bed we call the Playa? That’s for YOU to decide! While keeping playa aesthetics always in the forefront of your mind, you can create art and music to celebrate space, human curiosity, and the explorer’s spirit that led us to fly ever further “out there”.
You are invited to come and do this with us, explore with us, create with us, dance and play and … of course, BURN!

Yuri's Night 2018
Thursday evening on April 12 was "Yuri's Night," an international celebration of the anniversary of the first manned mission in space. Although at the time it was seen as a defeat for the American space program as the United States was engaged in the Cold War with the Soviet Union, in years since it has been come to seen as a triumph for all of humanity.
For the event's first two hours, the party took place high above the Spaceport Bravo sim. Then at 4PM SL time, the people headed to the Sagan Planetarium at Aspen (200/120/3730). There, people danced, sometimes going weightless. Next to them, the planetary displayed to show each of the planets and the dwarf planets Ceres and Pluto. It was a fun time for space nuts. For pictures of the 2016 Yuri's Night, Click Here.

Yuri's Night 2015
Last weekend was the anniversary of the first manned mission to space by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Although the event at the time was seen as a propaganda victory for Communism, with the thaw of the Cold War, it's been seen more as a triumph for Mankind in general, and is celebrated by space fans every year. This includes those in Second Life, who got together for a couple parties and a contest with a prize worthy of an aspiring astronaut.
