Reader Submitted: Game Review - World of Tanks

Rita Mariner, who sent us a series of articles on how to get through Subnautica, recently sent us a review of a noted game that's been out for a few years: World of Tanks. Developed by Wargaming in 2010, "WoT" as it's called for short was the company's first Massive Multiplayer Online game, and remains it's most popular one. Rita has been a longtime player of the game. But in her opinion, the game has not gotten better with age.

Read Rita's reader submission in Other Grids, MMOs, and Games.

3D Republic and Harambee

Christmas is getting closer. And the search for winter and holiday-themed places in Second Life continues. Gemma Cleanslate found two more, 3D Republic and Harambee. 3D Republic is a place where vendors "come together to bring you a variety of items to choose from to celebrate your holiday season." Harambee is a place that helps raise funds for schools in Kenya. So what did Gemma find in the two places?

Read Gemma's article in Places.

A Busy Weekend

There were a number of events that took place this weekend. Saturday December 15 had the CDS Inaugural Ball (pictured above), and the Caledon Oxbridge University Christmas party. Sunday December 16 had this month's Homes For Our Troops' fundraising concert at Veterans Isle.

More on these events later.

Exclusive Winter Gift For Premium Accounts by Linden Lab

When Linden Lab announced their Winter Swaginator Hunt, they also stated that "Premium members will see a very special new and exclusive gift"and it would "go with your Winter Swaginator gifts." A few days ago, they announced it was available for pickup, at least for those with Premium accounts. And what is the gift? A winter cabin.

This charming home-away-from-home features a scripted door for added security, extra textures for the exterior, and other features. If you’ve been collecting the weekly Swaginator gifts, you’ll find this cabin in the perfect place to decorate with those gifts or give it your own personal flair with your unique decorative eye.

So if you have a Premium account, head to a Premium Gift Collection Spot and get it. If you're not, trying gets you a message like that on the left. For everyone else, the clue for the final gift in the Winter Swaginator Hunt should appear on the official blog sometime today.

Cartoon of the Day: Bike Riding Santa

Taken at the Christmas Expo. So what would Santa be doing with a bike instead of his sleigh and reindeer? A few possibilities come to mind.

The Winter Swaginator Hunt, Gift Four Location

It's the final day to get gift four of the Winter Swaginator Hunt. The clue was a vague one, suggesting it was somewhere around the Winter Wonderland area accessible from Portal Park. Turns out that the gift was placed just outside Winter Wonderland's entrance, at Portal Park 1 (180,112,52).

Unpacking the gift, there are four items of furniture: a bed, a bedside table, a bedside table with books, and a table lamp.

Check the Linden Blog tomorrow for the fifth gift in the Winter Swaginator Hunt, and the last one for free players. Premium accounts get one more gift.

Mystery Craft In Montecito Bay

Just a week after the Newser reported on mysterious circles appearing on the streets of Montecito Bay, more strangeness has happened. Their Oceanside Galleria building has what looks like a flying saucer of some kind having crashed into the side.

If anyone needs to take Flamingo Ave. East, don't bother, traffic is officially halted from the start of Mission and ends at Venetia. We're not entirely sure, but... there's been a massive..... object that's crashed into the Galleria. We're doing our best to sort it, but please, to avoid delays, simply go all the way around to Bayside Drive or Palm Drive.

Group chatter didn't reveal much. Two people stated besides the police, the FBI has gotten involved. But no one would would say a thing about what the craft was, except perhaps the person in charge of the community's Twitter page.

Traffic has been halted from the start of Mission to Venetia, as authorities investigate a vehicle crash in the side of the Galleria. Expect delays. ⌿⍀⟒⌿⏃⍀⟒ ⊬⍜⎍⍀⌇⟒⌰⎐⟒⌇
#SecondLife #UFO #Second_Life

So somebody called this craft a "UFO." What the strange symbols in the tweet, or those in the tweet of this week's club events mean, or if they have anything to do with the UFO or the strange markings on the streets is unknown.

Although the US Military has tried to develop aircraft that resemble flying saucers, so far the prototypes are highly unstable more than a few feet in the air ... so far.

Stay tuned for more information.

What Happened to Aero Pines?

In the past, the Newser did a number of stories on Aero Pines Park. This park area had a number of activities, most noted for it's nature trails and horseback riding. But it also had yearly parties and festivals, in addition to it's 9/11 firemen tribute. But earlier this year, the park closed down. Recently, I had a chat with it's former owner Cindy Bolero, and she explained what happened.

Who Should Be Second Life's "Man of the Year?"

The noted TIME magazine recently issued it's annual "Man of the Year" edition, as it has for decades, the person whom it feels made the biggest impact in news events for the past year. It's not always a man, as women have won it. It's not always a good guy, as it's been awarded to dictators. Sometimes it's awarded to a group of people, as it was this year when it was awarded to a number of journalists whom have dealt with persecution, and in once case death, at the hands of authoritarian governments. Sometimes the choice stirs controversy, such as one year when it was awarded to "The Computer," and at other times when it was awarded to someone whom had obviously made the news for destruction and death.

So whom was the biggest newsmaker over the past year in Second Life? What man, woman, group of people, or even thing, made the most news here?

This will be the fifth time the Newser has given the title. In 2014, the new CEO of Linden Lab Ebbe Linden was the Man of the Year. In 2015, the residents of Steelhead were the Community of the Year. In 2016, the title was given to the Relay for Life in Second Life. In 2017, someone from outside Second Life was chosen for the first time with FCC Chairman Ajit Pai getting the title for the potential damage his Net Neutrality could have for the virtual world.

So who will be number five? For now, we're still taking suggestions. Feel free to list then in the comments below.

The Winter Swaginator Hunt: Clue to Gift Four

This is the fourth week Linden Lab's Winter Swaginator Hunt has been going on. And for a couple days, the clue for gift number four has been up on the Linden blog. But for those whom had a hard time with the previous week's clues and were hoping for something easy, sorry to say that this one is the most vauge of them so far.

It’s winter-y, fun, games and a series of quests. Can you find the gift hidden in the magical chest?

The link takes you to Portal Park. I guessed the gift was somewhere around Winter Wonderland, and an initial quick search proved fruitless (no, it's not near where the first gift was). Eventually, Gemma Cleanslate found it. So where is it? We can't tell you just yet, but we do suggest keeping a careful eye out. It could be right before your eyes, and you still might not notice.

The location will be revealed this weekend. And next week, the final gift (unless you have a Premium account, in which case there may be one more).

North Pole And The "Christmas Express" at Caledon Downs

Christmas is coming to the Caledon community. At Caledon Downs, residents can visit the North Pole where they can see the toy workshops and sample a few goodies. How to get there? There's a train called the "Christmas Express." But this is a very special train: it actually flies! Cynthia Farshore showed me around the place and the train.

Christmas at Creations Park and Botanica

As the days continue to count down to Christmas, Gemma Cleanslate has been continuing to explore holiday-themed places. One is a noted area that's been given a festive look for the season, Creations Park. There are a number of events happening there, as well as plenty of hidden gifts waiting to be found. She also visited it's neighbor Botanica, The well-decorated sim offers skating, racing, a music shop, and more.

Reader Submitted: Snowman Smashed in Caledon Downs

"This just in. As previously reported earlier today. Another snowman was found deceased early this morning by a local pub owner. The owner stated that there has been no crime this year except for the occasional barrel of rum going  missing. We have received a follow up report that another snowman was apparently a victim of a hit and run in downs. Inspectors are looking into the matter."

A Busy Sunday

Sunday was an active day. It was the last official day for the RFL Christmas Expo, and among the last big events was the "Holidays for Hope" ball. The stage was cleverly designed, looking like a music box. The event lasted from 1 to 6PM.

The Expo wasn't the only event going on. Bay City had it's Christmas Tree Lighting party. with the music provided by DJ GoSpeed Racer and live musicians Melinda M. Baptiste and Erika Ordinary. This was a two hour event from 1 to 4 PM SL time. The event raised a little money for the Child's Play charity.

More pictures later, time permitting.

Pony Town Sim Closed For Remodeling

Besides being a noted member of the Sunweaver community, Dusk Griswold (Ginger) is also one of the staff of the Pony Town sim. She stated the sim has been "temporarily closed for a move and remodel" for a month, and isn't sure when it will be open, "I haven't gotten a definite answer. ... There was no notice sent out, just a public announcement in sim on Halloween." The sim closed a few days later.

Dusk stated the sim has been around since 2010 or 2011, "one of the longest running MLP sims." Of how the remodeling is going, "I have been to it to see the progress, it is coming along nicely. ... Some features the old sim lacked will be added. I can't go itno detail, though."

On the map, Pony Town is close to Saddlewood, another pony sim.

The Winter Swaginator Hunt, Gift Three Location.

It's the last full day to get gift number three of the "Winter Swaginator Hunt." If you couldn't figure how how to get it by now, here's where it is. First of all, if you haven't gotten the hunt HUD, head to the Winter Wonderland area in Portal Park and get it. If you have the HUD, then good news. The area you need to go is within sight once you land in Portal Park: Linden Realms.

They last part of the clue is "It's hidden nearby a tree that glows." Not too far from the Linden Realms base is the glowing tree in the first part of "The Search For Magellan." The gift box you'll need to touch, with the Swaginator HUD on, is at LR 46 (153/50/41). Oh, and as this is a game area, watch out for bear traps, quicksand traps, rock monsters that want to eat you, and if you're in the area at peak times the "air blobs" can lie around anywhere completely invisible until someone runs over them and gets knocked out back to a regenerator.

Opening the gift box, there are four furniture items. There's a working floor lamp, two rugs, and a bookshelf. The bookshelf has some humorous titles such as "Rolling Restarts," "Cubes, Spheres, and Other Shapes," "Linden Realms Cheats," and more.

Check the Linden Blog tomorrow for the fourth gift in the Winter Swaginator Hunt.

In August, Gemma Cleanslate covered the opening of the Tarot Garden in LEA17. Late in the month, the exhibit will close. But before it does, you can drop in for some gifts. Every day until the 22nd, the exhibit will be offering a new item by one of the sculptures. Klaus Bereznyak writes about these parting presents to the art lovers who come by.

Mysterious Circles Appear on Montecito Bay's Streets

In October Montecito Bay dealt with a slime and maw monster scare. But while Halloween has ended, the weirdness in the community hasn't. Recently, there's been a rash of patterns appearing on the sim's city streets. While most are dismissing them as someone's prank, there have been some strange coincidences that have locals scratching their heads.

Read the story in Extra.

Pearl Harbor Memorial

It was 77 years ago on December 7, 1941 in which the Second World War came to the United States. The Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Over 2400 were killed in the attack, including almost 1200 of the 1500 sailors on the USS Arizona, when the battleship suffered a catastrophic explosion. Most of the ships severely damaged or sunk were repaired and returned to service. But the Arizona was too badly damaged to raise. It would be left in the water, the resting place for most of those who died on the ship. In 1962, a memorial was build over the battleship, the USS Arizona Memorial.

In Second Life, a replica of the USS Arizona Memorial stands at the Oahu sim. The memorial has existed for several years, and had a 70th anniversary commemoration in 2011.The memorial was offline for several months in 2016 when the sim closed. But in January 2017, the sim and memorial came back online. Last year at this time, the memorial was inaccessible due to the sim being "under construction."

Sansar Now Available On Steam

About a month ago, Linden Lab announced that it's next-generation virtual world, Sansar, would soon be available on Steam. Yesterday, it was announced that Sansar was up and available there.

As of today, December 5th, we are officially live on Steam!

We wanted to give a huge thank you to our current community who have been so supportive, and to extend a warm “Welcome” to all our new community members joining us from Steam!

You can find us on Steam as an Early Access Game, where we’re free to download. Even better, you’ll get to enjoy all the benefits of Steam as a social platform for gamers including full access to our Steam Community Hub!

Sansar is one out of two products by Linden Lab available on Steam, the other being Blocksworld, which has been there since September 2017. Both are listed as "early access" platforms, "We plan on staying in Early Access until Sansar is the very best it can be." So far, there are a handful of reviews, which are mostly positive.

In it's move to Steam, Linden Lab did away with the SandeX, which was where Sansar users could buy and sell the virtual world's currency. There's no threads in the official forums about Sansar now being on Steam, though there is one in Virtualverse. Second Life had been available on Steam in 2012, but wasn't there for very long.

Ryan Schultz stated in his blog that why he hoped Sansar's move to steam was successful, he wasn't sure it would be, noting that High Fidelity doing the same didn't change it's numbers much. He did worry about Steam users being "brutal" with their reviews, though as mentioned earlier they are mostly positive so far. But he did say that two games in Sansar that had been getting attention, Hoverderby and Combat Zone, had been closed by the developers. If so, fewer available activities could make it harder for the next-generation virtual world to retain users.

The Luskwood Tribute Party

If another community you admire isn't able to organize a key anniversary event, what do you do? The Luskwood community, the oldest in Second Life, turned fifteen this fall, but it's founders couldn't hold a grand anniversary event. For the the Happy Vixen, the beach club of the Sunweaver/Angels community, the answer to the problem was to hold a tribute party. The party was a big success, with a number from Luskwood dropping by. To everyone's surprise, so did one of the Lindens.

Khargo Christmas Market and Under The Tree Christmas Shop

Gemma Cleanslate continues her exploration for Christmas-themed places in Second Life. One is the Khargo Christmas Market at Yellowstone falls, where one can get many kinds of decorations. At Under The Tree Christmas Shop in Larsen, you can chop down your own tree, as well as getting things for it.

Bento Realistic Organs For Avatars For Sale

Remember the "Visible Woman" Beckye Burnstein a few years ago? For those who don't, She added realism to her avatar by adding bones and organs underneath. Since then, yours truly has seen a number of avatars with brains in the head, but nothing more until a friend pointed out a mutual friend had gotten internal organs. Talking to her, she pointed out a certain item on Marketplace: "Bento Realistic Female Organs 4.1."

What the product does install a set of organs and glands one would expect to see for a grown woman, a heart, lungs, intestines, a liver, and more. This includes mammary glands and ovaries and an uterus. There's an option for the brain to give out "emotional messages," which appear in local chat, "What your heart thinks is great, is great. The soul's emphasis is always right." There wasn't really a way to see the organs other than panning inside (I let the lady know, as well as getting the okay to take and publish pictures).

The item, made by a Jackhammerhp Strom, is up for sale both on Marketplace and his inworld store. Most of the reviews in Marketplace were positive, "So realistic in a creepy but awesome way." But one gave mixed reviews, "This product isn't good or bad, it's just...confusing? " Jackhammer recommended an avatar of at least 20% body fat, plus altering the avatar further if some organs end up poking out. One reviewer stated it doesn't always work on furry avatars, though it was a furry I saw with the organs.

There are a number of other items in his Marketplace store, and inworld, including Bento skeletons for avatars, and a skeleton and organ "Pregnancy System." It should be noted some of the items are clearly of an adult nature, so the page should be considered "Not Safe For Work."

So has Beckye heard of the Bento organs? Messaging her, she responded, "Of course I did, and I got it right away! Haha, finally someone made it!"

So while selling human organs in real life may get you in a lot of trouble, in Second Life, it can be done. That is, if you've got the "guts" for it, and the "heart" to always listen to your customers.

The Winter Swaginator Hunt: Clue to Gift Three

It's the third week of Linden Lab's "Winter Swaginator Hunt." And there's a new gift out for it. The clue posted on the Linden blog goes as follows:

Among sparkling crystals and dangerous rocks, the treasure is hidden inside a magical box! In this Realm, look high, look low. It's hidden nearby a tree that glows.

This was followed by a more direct comment, "Head to Linden Realms in Portal Park!" - Park 1/128/128/23

So where in Linden Realms is it? We'll have the location this weekend. But take note Linden Reals has a new obstacle: "air blobs." They appear out of nowhere and knock your character out. So be prepared for a lot of setbacks.

Addition: When I checked later in the evening, the air blobs were gone. There were fewer people in the Realms at the time, so maybe this particular obstacle appears when there's more than a certain number of residents at the time. So maybe check for the present when there aren't so many others around.

Mermaid Celene About The Radegast Viewer

Second Life can allow the disabled to do things they couldn't normally do in real life. But what if the disability is visual impairment to the point of legal blindness or full blindness? Deaflegacy recently interviewed Mermaid Celene (celenehighwater), the head of the Blind Users Viewer Support group, and a member of the Radegast group. Mermaid talked about what the Radegast viewer is, and how it allows the blind to use Second Life.
