Cartoon of The Day: Why Did He Faint?

Taken at Caledon's Battle of Wits. With all of the groaners, one guy used his fainting gesture a few times. So what else could cause a guy to faint? I could think of one other reason.

Caledon's Battle of Wits

Last weekend, yours truly attended an event some might say was overqualified to take part in, Caledon's "Battle of Wits." This fundraiser hosted by the Relay's Team ACTS was supposed to be a contest between those on stage who could crack one joke and pun after another. Things didn't go quite according to plan, but it all turned out well. Perhaps not so much for some of the jokes. In this spree of groaners, it was a must to be oh=pun minded.

Read the story in Events (and lovers of bad puns, feel free to use every one).

Cartoon of The Day: Steamed Up

Taken at Caledon's Writer's Meeting. This charming fellow was all in armor with a boiler for a helmet. So why a boiler? I could think of one reason.

Caledon Celebrates Twenty Years With Anniversary Ball

A few days ago, the Second Life community of Caledon celebrated a milestone anniversary: it's twentith. On Thursday February 26, there was a Founders Ball.

Tonight marks our 20th year since Desmond Shang founded Caledon.  Join us in a lovely new ballroom as we celebrate 2 decades of our wonderful nation.  Show your spirit with Caledon colors, formal wear especially welcome.  Music begins at 6:30pm SLT

Yours truly was able to drop in late in the event, just in time to see Desmond Shang, the founder of Caledon and it's former "Guvnah," tell everyone good night, "can hardly believe we lasted this long. ... Thanks for keeping this place going, Neo. means a lot to me." People raised a glass to the past and current leader, "It's lovely to have you both here, Des and Neo." NeoBokrug Elytis smiled, "The good and the bad are the sum of who we are, I'd have it no other way."

As the event went on, people reminisced about the times they had, "I was just thinking where I have been 20 years back in my life. I just had lost a job, met again with my crush and visiting her family." "I remember when Des first announced Caledon in the old SL forums." Someone would find it: (link, "The old SL forums are so badly broken now and it's difficult to find anything on them."

A couple times, the Caledon anthem played, which got comments from the crowd, "Dougie McLean's greatest song," "So angelic," "Gives me shivers every time I hear this."

Andrea Jones would post some pictures of the ball on her Flickr , "I hope I got everyone's picture."

There would be further events two days later on Saturday, but the ball was the key event.

"And happy anniversary again, Caledon! Here's to many more years!"

Taken at the Caledon Anniversary celebrations. When people were watching a movie, there were only a few seats around. But this lady found a solution in hand.

New Year's Eve 2025

Many people in Second Life, perhaps most, love a good party. And New Years Eve had a number. Some places had a special twist on regularly scheduled happenings, and others were open just for this special night. Yours truly dropped by a few from Wooburn, to Caledon, to Bay City, and his own home community the Sunweavers as they bade 2025 good bye, and hello to 2026.

Announcement: Christmas Downs Is Open

The Duchy of Caledon Downs is pleased to announce the opening of Christmas Downs and the Santa Sleigh Ride. We do apologize for the lateness this year but most all know of the major land movement and parcel ownership that took place which caused a re-routing of the ride.

The Christmas Express which takes you up to Santa's land is located on the high ground at the railroad track, Also the Christmas Express has been replaced with newer models with easier to sit on car. Ice skating on the harbor now can provide free skates. Up on the Goblin Cave hill is a free Sled to ride on.

We do hope you will come and explore Caledon Downs as it is completely open to the public.

Reader Submitted: Team ACTS

Mr. Spatterdash prevailed in the Caledon Battle of Wits today held in Support of The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in SL  - team ACTS (Aether Chrononauts & Tiny Steps). It was really fast and furious in a close match as his two very worthy opponents gave as good as they got. Much fun was had all around! Witty banter, puns, riffs, limericks and other bon mots were hurled around the Guv’nah’s Mansion in Steampunk Victorian Caledon today as over L$64,000 was raised by the contestants and a L$10,000 challenge was made for the kiosks to hit L$60,000 by this dedicated RFL team co-captain Wildstar Beaumont - and they DID! HUZZAH! L$74,000 in 2 hours is an impressive total! Event Hostess and Sound Maestra Magdalena Kamanev always throws a wonderful shindig. We are all looking forward to Royal Ascot coming up as well June 17-23.

Team ACTS, in its 17th year is currently ranked #4/189 teams.

Writers' Meeting At Caledon

Yesterday, I dropped in at the Writers' Meeting in the Caledon Night Readings Room. This is a place for people to talk about what they've been writing, listen in on others talking about what they've been writing, get a little help and inspiration on writing, and more.

Meeting for writers to talk about writing. Sit near the virtual fireplace and discuss about what one is writing, planning to write and maybe tell about their writing process. ... And somewhat random writings prompts are provided later, in case they might give inspiration. Use them whatever way you wish.  There is no demand to write anything based on the prompt for the next meeting. Come talk about writing or bring your questions about writing, editing, and publishing in a friendly atmosphere.

I dropped in a bit late on this particular meeting, which had one dracanic-looking avatar among the human ones. An earlier meeting I was at had a mix of humans, furries and tinies. One was talking about elves in his story universe, saying they had originally left the land the story takes place on, but were being forced to return, and most weren't able to use magic. One of those present commented that appealed to him, "more interesting when they have to use the grey matter between their ears."

The Writers' Meeting takes place every Thursday at 11 AM. The discussion is in chat and not voice.

Caledon's Governor Desmond Shang To Retire

September 12th 2023 became a red letter day in Caledon history. Desmond Shang, Governor of the Independent State of Caledon since 2006, has announced that he will be stepping down. The position, fondly called by its citizens “Guvnah” will be assumed by NeoBokrug Elytis. It is understood that Caledon is not sold just placed into the hands of a new Governor. Desmond has known NeoBokrug for nearly 20 years and NeoBokrug is owner of The Wastelands which itself is 16 years old, thus clearly Caledon’s new Governor is well chosen.

This does not mean that Desmond is leaving; it is only a retirement. He will still be a citizen of Caledon and will be present it is just that real life is even more demanding and can’t allow him to give Caledon the attention it needs. A Town Hall meeting is scheduled for September 16 at 2pm SLT at the Governor’s Mansion for the formal change of office and public introduction. Later within the week NeoBokrug will be sending out inaugural invitations so more information will be coming.

Caledon Downsizing A Few Sims

Last week, it was announced that the Caledon community would be giving up a few of it's sims soon. So why is the place getting smaller? Yours truly asked it's leader Desmond Shang a few questions, and he had a few answers as to what's going on and why.

Caledon Steampunk Community to Lose Sims

Some sad news for the people in the Caledon steampunk area. Last night, community leader Desmond Shang announced that three sims (four if a homestead is counted) will likely be closing soon.

Now that I've got notices out to everyone in Kittiwick, Tanglewood, and Cay, this is a general announcement that we are cutting back 3 standard regions and one homestead (tbd due to possible swaps).

Residents, if you haven't paid your parcel meter, I'm going to assume you don't want the parcel, and a displaced resident from a closing region can have the unpaid parcel.

Caledon currently has 22 sims, full and homestead. It started out as two, and quickly expanded to 29 in 2007. But over time, it got a little smaller. This loss would make it 18.

Hopefully a way to be found to keep these sims from closing.

Caledon Celebrates 17th Anniversary

Sunday February 26 was a special day for the noted Steampunk community of Caledon. It was the anniversary of it's foundation, the day being considered "Founder's Day." And they would have an event to celebrate that evening.

Today, February 26th, is Founder's Day--the 17th anniversary of the day Caledon first rezzed in!  Join us tonight in the beautiful Dragon Ballroom to celebrate.  Wear your Caledon colors, the national tartan, or just plain dress up in something fancy.  Music for the Founder's Day Caledon Anniversary Ball begins at 6:30pm SLT

A number of people showed up, including Caledon governor Desmond Shang, nicknamed "Guvnah" or "the Guv."

Kamilah Hauptmann, the one who talked yours truly into signing up onto SL in 2006, was also there, still finding the time to occasionally come by some Caledonian events.

Following the party in the Dragon Ballroom, people went to a secret tunnel leading from the governor's manor to the lair for the "Catgirl Bash." Starting a couple years after the founding, this would be the 15th.

After the regalia and gentility of the Caledon Anniversary Ball, it's time to drop the cravats and release the corsets to prowl down to the Catgirl lair under Victoria City!

Unfortunately, there was a problem with leaky pipes, and flooding. But the catgirls persisted through the wet clothes and wet fur (some more furred than others). Sadly, there would be no fireworks that night (maybe they got damp), but it was still a fun time as this large Steampunk community celebrated it's founding.
