Relay Track Camps Open to Builders

 

 

Earlier today, the campsites at the Relay Weekend track sims were opened up to builders (and one reporter designated one). This includes the Sunbeamer camp, which team captain Rita Mariner showed off the marker.

For the 'beamers, things will be a little different this year. They will be sponsoring a sim: RFL Advocacy.

The sims are mostly empty now. But it won't be long before they're full of builds as the various teams fill up their campsites. The Newser won't show pictures of incomplete sites, but we can and will show "teasers" for small glimpses of what's to come.

New Sponsor: Steelhead Bay

Great news. The Steelhead community is once more sponsoring the Second Life Newser. What made them stop? To begin with, Steelhead for several years was one of the more notable steampunk/Victorian communities. While not the largest, it certainly enjoyed high visibility due to it's award-winning Relay for Life team and the antics and events of it's residents, such as it's yearly eruption of Mount Saint Hellens. But in September 2015, the owner of the sims at the time announced he had to leave Second Life for a while due to real-life difficulties, and the estate closed a few months later. Although it's residents were able to move to other sims, they missed their old home. Finally in March 2017, Fuzzball Ortega, the sheriff of the old community, announced he would be rebuilding Steelhead. And in a short time, the sim of Steelhead Bay was full of buildings.

We look forward to covering the Steelhead community's Relay events, plus other antics of this interesting steampunk area.

The Confederation of Democratic Simulators, or CDS, is a community in Second Life in which ownership of land entitles a resident a say in how things are run. We at Second Life Newser have several levels of advertising. For 1000 Linden dollars, you can have an article describing your business and what you sell on the front page for a week, and afterwards it remains in our archives, either of your design or done by one of our writers. To keep your name in the spotlight, consider a sponsorship in which you'll have a banner, linked to your page or an article of your choosing, near the top of the front section where it will be quickly noticed by readers, a three month term for the economical rate of 15,000 Linden dollars. Secondary Sponsorships are much the same, the banners appearing high on the page of other sections, such as People, Places, and Events, the three month term there costing 5,000 Linden dollars.

New Reporters, New Sponsorship Level

It's been a lot of fun celebrating the Newser Anniversary, but that's not all we have to crow about.

In the past couple weeks, we've had three new reporters join our ranks, Leona Kitty, Syndra (Katakanna), and Ozymandius (0zymandi). They've already sent in some articles. Ozymandius did a great review of the Insilico roleplay area. Syndra brought our Fashion section out from inactivity. And Leona has gotten the attention of people wanting to advertise here. We're looking forward to more of their articles.

Also, we've had requests for a smaller level of sponsorship from people who are looking to do so long term, but have doubts about doing so at the level our normal sponsorships require. So we're introducing our Secondary Sponsorships. These are much like Primary Sponsorships, but are on other sections other than the main one (People, Places, Events, etc.). These are currently 5,000 Linden dollars for a three month period, extendable by purchasing more time.

Giant Snail Races in Need of Sponsors

For years, the Giant Snail Races have been a weekly event in Second Life. Organized by RacerX Gullwing, part sport and part entertainment, this is the sort of thing that could appear only in this virtual world. With the huge snail avatars stumbling across the obstacle course, or along a cross-country track, the wackiness of it all has been enough to keep a following of fans, both those who watch every week and those whom keep occasional tabs.

Week after week, month after month, year after year, the races have gone on. So imagine the surprise when RacerX made this announcement, both in the inworld group and his Facebook feed:

The Giant Snail races may on it's last few months. Were gonna lose our sim soon . Well still do some specialty races I suppose for RFL or special events but could be the end of our weekly shows.

We had a good run 11+ years. Thanks everyone for your support.

When I IMed RacerX, he told me he'd be able to speak more on the matter later. And indeed a few days later, he had a few things to say, "Looks like we may be around a while longer. Mae Best was paying for the whole sim herself. But if we can come up with most of the money, we'll be able to stick around. now just We had a few people so far say they would. but no specific amounts yet."

"Here's what she said on Facebook: Emretta May Hinman - 'We need sponsors to pay for the Sim Tier starting in Aug. Unfortunately due to budget cuts in the Govt., and poor numbers in my company, it looks like my job is going away, and I am no longer able to do it alone as I am taking a lesser paying job elsewhere. YOU can help by sponsoring a small $ or L amount each month towards Tier fees!"

The Snail Races are at 11:00 AM on Saturdays at Gullwing Coast Racers (142/104/777), aside special cross-counry races at the last Saturday at the end of each month from March to June for the Relay for Life.

Further Details on the SL9B

On Monday, there was another SL9B announcement by Saffia Widdershins on the Prim Perfect newsletter following the one over the weekend. The centralized ten sim event will take place from June 18th to June 24th 2012. The sponsor of the event was also named, Dream Seeker Estates, "teams are already at work planning and developing ideas so that they will be ready to house the exhibits and the entertainment that all of us will create."

The announcement described "there will be a main stage and other stage venues. There will be gifts to take away … There will be an auditorium for talks (and also for TV broadcasts …)." Among the "old favorites" that will be returning is the cake stage, and while there may be a bear given out, it won't be a Linden Bear. Saffia stated her Designing Worlds" show would be filming there, in addition to Pooky Amsterdam's "the 1st Question" game show being there.

Signup details are at the http://sl9b.wordpress.com/ website, where people can sign up as exhibitors, performers, or volunteers, the latter which the announcement stated were especially needed for the event. Like the Linden Lab sponsored anniversary events, the SL9B has a PG/General rating. So all exhibits and performances will have to limit themselves to one as well, the purpose being for all residents, including the underage ones, being able to attend, "exhibitors may provide landmarks to Adult regions, provided they are properly marked as Adult. And if residents decide to have a special Adult celebration on dedicated sims, a link can be provided to that too."

In addition to the "Community" theme, "this year there will be a new innovation: one day of the Birthday celebration will be dedicated to charity. The theme is AIDS awareness, and there will be fundraising for the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS charity, which is supported by the Dream Seeker Estates."

Saffia described this event as "last minute ... we only discovered a few days ago that definitely, definitively and finally that Linden Lab would not be supplying land for a centralized Birthday celebration. ... this is still a project in development, and you may be seeing a few changes over the coming days."

Vietnam Wall Builder Would Help Bring Back Momument if Sponsor Comes Forward

In November, The Vietnam Veteran's Memorial was found to have vanished. Contacting the head of Meme Science, Evian Argus, which built "The Wall" sim where it was, he told me someone had been sponsoring hit, but must have decided to suddenly up and stop paying the tier. He would try to help bring it back if there was someone else offering to sponsor the Memorial.

So who can help bring back this replica of the memorial to the 58,000 soldiers who gave their lives in the Vietnam War?
