Echovets Announces New Veteran’s Gateway Sim
What we are attempting to do is have some free items for our Active Duty, Veterans and family members that choose to Rezz for the first time in Second Life at the EchoGroup Gateway.
I have been in SL for almost 19 years, I know, and have seen us pull together to help new residents get a great start. I am hoping I can count on you to pull together again, with us to make it a great experience for them as they come to Second Life, and to EchoVets and not only join us in the place we all love, but also to receive the benefit of having their Rezz day on our sim where we can provide LIVE assistance with the systems in place to help them as Uniformed Service Members.
We are looking for Mesh Bodies, Hair, Skins, Clothing, and any great items you think might be a nice free item or even VERY low cost that I am willing to give them the lindens out of my pocket to obtain.
I welcome you to tour the sim, ask any questions you like, and I am also including some background and our social media links for your information.

Relay Kickoff Tomorrow
For members of the Relay for Life in Second Life, tomorrow is a big day. Saturday February 20 marks the start of the 2021 Relay season here in the virtual world. The the first event will be the Kickoff at the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society2 sims. It's set to start at 10AM SL time.
The theme this year, "A Cure for a Happy Ending. It's sure to be a big event with people from many teams, large and small. For those already in the Relay, it's an event not to be missed. For those not yet part of the Relay but wanting to know more, this is a good chance to find people to talk to about it and maybe join a team.
On a similar note, there's a call for screenshots, and other items for the Relay museum. They're looking for those from the 2016 to 2020 Relay seasons. While they've gotten the permission from the Newser to use any of it's pictures, well, we weren't everywhere at once. So by all means consider sharing any you have. The one to contact is Museumstorage Resident. The museum can be reached at American Cancer Society (78/104/23).
Go Relay!

More Merchandise Available In Second Life Redbubble Store
In September, Linden Lab launched a Second Life merchandise store through Redbubble. Earlier this week, the Lab announced some new items had been added to it. There's now winter-themed shirts and coffee mugs in the selection, as well as April and Coyot Linden bear themed t-shirts.
We'd like to announce that we've added a couple wintery items to our official merchandise store on RedBubble. A wholesome and humorous play on our logo, we hope these can bring some lighthearted joy to kick off a hopeful and positive attitude for the start of 2021.
We've also added the Linden Bears of April and Coyot to our collection of pocket tees.

Furry Fashion Goods at Farshore Shipping and Trading
Cynthia Farshore recently notified me of a number of additional items up for sale at her "Farshore Shipping and Trading" store in Sunlight Bay. The brand of most of these goods will be familiar to longtime readers: Furry Fashion.
The decision of Furry Fashion to change it's Furry sim rating to adult (which was made only after talks with some in the staff whom had concerns), was not well received by everyone as the comments after the announcement in the Newser shows. As Sunlight Bay has a rating of "Moderate," the new goods at the Farshore store allow a location for those who want to shop at an inworld location with their goods but can't or won't set foot in a sim with an "Adult" rating.

Maxwell Graf of Rustica Asks For Help Due to Real Life Eviction
by Bixyl Shuftan
Maxwell Graf, best known for being a content creator and his well-designed sim Rustica is in trouble. A few days ago, he sent a plea for help, saying the house he and his wife were supposed to spend their retirement in will soon be lost due to a falling out with the wife's family, "We have to vacate ... This is terrifying. We have no savings, we have to credit cards to run up. Even in a best case scenario, we can only afford a small two-bedroom apartment ... What I want is a safe place for Cheryl and my dogs to sleep at night. Nothing else matters. I am not the kind of person who wants a handout ... What I am asking is that you take a visit to my sim (Rustica) and purchase an item or two, or visit my admittedly small marketplace store and find something there. If you want something but it costs too much, IM me and I will send it to you for whatever you do have. ... Every single item will make a very real difference in this crazy transition, and I honestly have never needed your help and support more in my life."
I got in contact with Maxwell, and we talked about his situation. He didn't have anything to add about his real-life situation other than "my schedule is absolutely messed up crazy right now, and going to go dark here at any time due to the move." But not everything was going bad, "I can say this.I have never before experienced the kind of love and caring and support that I have seen from so many people for Cheryl and I. In the middle of those closest to us, the siblings who are doing this to us, we have had an army of people we only know through 'virtual reality' do the most amazing things for us. It's such a strange dichotomy. I mean, people I have never even heard of sending me five or ten dollars to my Paypal somehow (I did not give it out), and randomly sending me lindens. People offering to let us stay with them, people offering to come help us pack. It's just amazing and I've been crying a lot.(smile)."There IS love and kindness in the world, beyond what I have ever known. I have always had a hard time asking for help, so I am just a pile of mush lately with the outpouring we have had from the SL community. ... amazing people. Never believe that this place is just a bunch of sex addicts or trolls or fashionistas, like they would have us believe. I know you never felt that way and I have not either, but this goes beyond what I have ever experienced. So much love from people."
For anyone wishing to help out, head over to the Rustica sim, Rustica (130/116/58), to purchase an item, or do so at Rustica's Marketplace page.

Scammer Alert: Unauthorized Full Perm Item Resales Reported on Marketplace
By Bixyl Shuftan
Strawberry Singh recently wrote about an apparent problem on the Second Life Marketplace after being contacted by the maker of full permissions, or Full Perm, items which he sold on Second Life's Marketplace. Unscrupulous individuals are taking such items, and placing copies up for resale on Marketplace, not bothering to get permissions or give any kind of compensation to the content creators. Unless the offending party agrees to take down the items themselves after being contacted, the only recourse for the creators is to file a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown request with Linden Lab "over and over until they are taken down, but then they must also DMCA items that are being sold by people who have bought these illegal full perm items and are selling them in their stores thinking they have a legal copy of the item."
Unfortunately, while sometimes this is the end of the ripoff, sometimes it continues, "A DMCA take down usually takes a week to be taken down, but the next day, that account puts it right back on that same Marketplace as a new listing."
Strawberry offered the following suggestions of "some of the things that you should look for and be aware of before making a purchase."
Before purchasing look at the seller’s other listings. If there is a hodgepodge of brand names and the vendors all look different, they are most likely an illegal seller.
Purchase the items from the inworld store of the full perm creator instead of the marketplace, to ensure that you are not purchasing from an illegal seller.
Most of the illegal sellers have blank profiles. Real full perm sellers usually have a full profile filled with links to their websites, mainstores and marketplace stores.
Most Full Perm sellers have started using water marks on the vendor ads which say the name of the avatar that is supposed to be selling it. The illegal sellers are still using those ads, even with the watermark. So it is important to look at the name of the creator on the watermark, and if it isn’t that person selling it, don’t buy it.
Try to find a way to report these items, either to Linden Lab by flagging the listing or to the original creator of the items.
That among her suggestions is not using Marketplace to purchase these items, Hamlet Au, who also wrote about the issue, called this, "Ironic, because a key point of the Marketplace existing at all is it makes online shopping for virtual content much more convenient than having to go rooting around for items in the full 3D client." Hamlet would go on to say Strawberry felt Linden Lab's options for dealing with this problem were limited.
"I honestly don't think they can because for them it would be hard to tell who is a valid seller without someone informing them at first and that's why the DMCA needs to happen." She was quoted as telling Hamlet, "If they went around closing accounts of people they suspect might be doing this without someone claiming it first, then they could potentially close some innocent accounts."
One possible solution, Strawberry suggested, was closing the accounts of those DMCAs had been filed against. But the Lab would need to be careful about unfairly shutting down creators whom are the target of false reports. Doing to would take time and resources (and money)by the Lab. But as Hamlet put it, "doing that would cut into Second Life's steadily shrinking profit margin. Then again, alienating content creators by not giving them a secure market also is also a profit-limiting move."
Among those leaving comments after Hamlet's article, one resident compared the problem to selling real life goods if they were easily duplicated in a fast-operating and extremely cheap to operate 3D printer. The person felt if someone was selling something completely Full Perm, rather than copyable but not transferable or transferable but not copyable, the seller was taking a chance, except perhaps if such items were useful only as parts to make a more detailed good.

Press Release: Team Sunbeamers Needs Your Help
We need stuff to sell at this years RFL, I personally can build stuff, but I can't script my way out of a paper bag. So we need ideas for goodies. We need them built and scripted, if needed. Here are a couple of ideas.
1. Sunbeamer Skunk Doll/Plushie, maybe big enough to lay or sit on?
2. 7 Seas Fishing items (fish, critters, collectables), unique to our area. The sillier the better. You can get info at 7Seas HQ on what you need to do.
3. Steampunk items, simple fun stuff, you just need!

Going on a Hunt
You might have heard friends talk about them: hunts. But what exactly are they? In Second Life, hunts are a kind of challenge a store or a group of stores sets up to attract shoppers: one or more freebie items are placed somewhere in the store, and the shopper searches around for it. It's become a popular means of advertising for the stores, and for the shoppers a chance to get free stuff and have fun searching for it. Kitacelia Resident had a few things to say about hunts, and wrote about them.
