Corey In The House, SL Avatar Statue Builder

Have you ever wanted to get a statue of your avatar or that of a friend, for amusement, or some other reason? I was pointed to Corey In The House, who for some Lindens will do just that. So how does it work and what else is he noted for?

Project Guernica

Made by London Junkers and Lizzie Gudkov, this three-dimensional tribute to the famous cubist painting by Picasso is in the Linden Endowment of the Arts sim LEA6.

In 1937 Spanish painter Pablo Picasso created one of the most important icons of the 20th century when he made the Guernica. Painted in black and white, depicting the horrors of war, it is today as solid and modern as it was when it was first shown in the 1937 International Fair in Paris.

The intention of re-creating this masterpiece in Second Life comes from the love for the original mural itself and what it represents.

After a lot of thought and experimenting with external 3d software, a decision was made, this installation would be built only in prims, as an exercise of the possibilities that LEA has given us.

With this piece, we would like to pay homage to Picasso and let visitors learn more from it.

Three tips were given for better viewing, using mouselook, setting draw distance higher, and turning "atmospheric shaders" higher.

Reader Submitted: "Where I Found My Ivory Tower Surrounded by ..."

Artée (Artistide Després) has primarily worked for the last 2 years on the creation of musical instruments with brilliant optical and acoustic effects, which have been frequently awarded. Parallel to the furthering of perfection of instruments, many important incidents occurred across the globe which are still changing the world: The bank crashes with the result of the worldwide Street Occupy Movement and the atomic accident at Fukushima. Both themes are already heavily influenced the previous works of Artée, but that did not prevent her from believing more and more in the ivory tower of the protected environment of her artistic world. The result is the current work "Huxley, Orwell & Ivory Towers."

We see around the centered instruments in the ivory tower several fields of worldwide misevaluation: Urbanisation, Totalitarianism, war and violence, misuse of financial power and pollution. Artée shows that our society loses freedom via new media and switches from Huxley’s social vision in “Brave new World” of dictatorship via Entertainment to Orwell’s vision in “1984” of a society under total control.

Valentine's Day Gift

Thank you the readers for the Valentine's Day gifts you sent over. Among them was this little artistic goodie from Crap Mariner.

Guess he counts as a lover of space travel. ;-)

SL Machinima: "2AM" By Chantal Harvey

"Machinima by Chantal Harvey, made at Bryn Oh's Standby installation at IBM sims in SL.
The song "TWO AM" is by Grace McDunnough.
Machinima made by Chantal Harvey. http://mamachinima.eu

Grace McDunnough is an independent artist from Atlanta, GA. Grace began performing live music in the virtual world of Second Life in 2006 where she still performs regularly. An entertainer and modern bard with heart and soul to spare, Grace throws down a variety of acoustic sets with an old guitar, rich lyrics and powerfully raw vocals for a growing international fan base. http://phasinggrace.blogspot.com/

Bryn Oh is a metaverse artist who is meant to exist only online. She is a concept, a pixel character who inhabits the virtual world of Second Life. The idea is to see if a virtual identity can succeed within the real world of flesh and blood artists. http://brynoh.blogspot.com/

This machinima is filmed in Second Life tm - at IBM sims.
Since 2006, IBM has maintained a presence in Second Life which has included the venerable IBM 6 sandbox, a home and training ground for some of the grids most talented builders, both IBMers and non IBMers, and the IBM 2 and IBM 3 Exhibition Sims. Through the operation of these areas, IBM has recognized that community building and social content creation are a key part of the value of virtual worlds. http://exhibitionspace.org/about.cfm

The song TWO AM inspired me to create this machinima, it has been haunting me - till I was invited to the Standby Art installation by Bryn Oh. I want to thank Bryn for letting me film there, and thanks Grace for allowing me to use her song. I hope I did justice to it.
Lyrics of TWO AM were written by Salome Strangelove. "

Press Release: "Acquarella - After the Apocalypse" Opens in InWorldz

Acquarella: After the Apocalypse GRAND OPENING
Saturday, October 29, 12 - 3 pm PDT

Attention! this event is in InWorldz, not Second Life!!

You are cordially invited to the GRAND OPENING for my first-ever full-sim art installation!

Come give me a hug or introduce yourself if we haven't met. Enjoy music by Chandra Deed noon to 1:30 pm PDT and Declan G 1:30 - 3 pm PDT! Feast on sushi! Ride a pink seahorse!

Best of all, come see a story as told by a sim: the Age of Man has ended in a blaze of fire, famine, and warfare, and the Age of Acquarella dawns. The mighty goddess repopulates the oceans with aquarium outposts filled with creatures that survived in the coolest depths. Hoping to avoid the violent excesses of her forebears, she plans for these little oceans to be peaceful and pure. Alas, as they say, if you want to make the Devil laugh, make plans.

Check out the unusual terraforming and land textures, the beautiful hand-drawn plants and exotic fish, the sea serpent, the rideable seahorses. Feast in the Sushi Pavilion. Look out for the 8-eyed monster - a true fear experience. Freebies and lots of cool stuff for sale in the Sim Store, too.

Wearable Art

Kelly Yap sent an invitation to come see "Art for you Head." I was curious so took a TP over to Healy to see. Kelly greeted me as I arrived. “This is an exhibition all about art that is worn on your head. We have fancy hair, hats, objects, etc....the main requirement was that it was that made to be worn on the head!“

She tried on a few for me and I tried on one myself. There were other visitors there trying on hats also while I was touring the area. As you view the art you can try some on and you can vote for your favorites. The winner will receive 5000L.

The exhibit runs until September 30 so try to get there to see the head art and to vote! There will be an ending party on October 3 at 3:00-5:00 SL time where the winners will be announced. You may want to take a hat home to wear at your next event! They are for sale. There are seventeen artists to view so save some time.

Papermakis

Earlier in August, I heard about an unusual place: Papermakis. Mentioned in a Second Life art blog, the place was made as a kind of artwork, one that was a “limited-time art exhibition.”

Welcome to the world of Papermakis, a creative place inspired by newspapers, books, articles, drawings and paper. Visit this limited-time art exhibition by Romy Nayar at MetaLES before it disappears in early August. More info at: http://metalesperformance.blogspot.com.

Porting over to the MetalLES sim, the place was ... odd. It was a surreal landscape of white with random letters sprinked across. There were occasional structures that looked like wrapped-up paper-mache newsprint. There were even paper-mache people and critters. Going about, I saw some variety in the structures. Black wire “trees” would drop solid black spheres onto the ground. A few structures would leak ink, or a stream of letters. In a couple places a few paper-mache creatures were spewing clouds of “O”s or “H”s. In a few places the “people” were socializing, or in one place cleaning up piles of letters.

Among the displays of paper-mache people, there was a paper-mache avatar. Named Ux Hax, or “Per4mancE” as the display name read, I tried talking to the person, but the av was away from keyboard. So I sent an Instant massage before heading off. Later on, the artist messaged me back, identifying herself as Romy Nayar:

Ux Hax: Instalation interactive 3D, Women artists and creators of SL ,expose each for a month in Sim MetaLES..O.. Promoting culture and art in the Metaverse. Performance always accompanied by special music for the event: http://metalesperformance.blogspot.com, Art.

Intended as a temporary exhibit, Papermakis didn’t last too long and was soon taken down. But it still exists in a machinima taken by ColeMarie Soleil. And Ux Hax/Romy Nayar was soon back with another exhibit in the MetaLES sim.

Inside Anna's Many Murders

Viewing the machinima posted in this publication on 6 August, I found myself quite intrigued by it. I wondered what was behind it, the motivation or inspiration or, even...compulsion, if that were the case.

I contacted the creator of the machinima, Bryn Oh, whose responses to my questions were quite intriguing to say the least. Anna's Many Murders was born of a daydream when Toronto's subway lost power. All passengers had been lost in their own electronic worlds (blackberries, ipods, etc.), ignorning those around them. When the subway came to an abrupt halt, everything else stopped and the silence and stillness in the car was eerie (enter the Twilight Zone?).

The daydream was of a future where no one would carry additions to their bodies but instead have them surgically implanted. For example, a nose app would "smell fresh baked bread 3 blocks away" and an eye app would "set out a digital course...to find the bakery."

Hence, the victims in this machinima are largely metallic in shape and Anna symbolically appears more human. This is representative of the world in which Anna lives, a world where everyone has become almost inhuman because of the many apparati they carry.

Trapped in this dehumanized world, Anna is desperately lonely. She glosses over reality with her own imagination in order to function and be happy. In the process, she becomes quite mad and in her madness, she seeks to annihilate those mechanical beings which make up her world.

Anna's Many Murders is somewhat (and I use the term loosely) representative of today's society, the world in which we all live. Filled with digital "apps" that we can't seem to live without, we have lost touch with reality and the beauty of nature which surrounds us.

Unfortunately the patron who had supplied Bryn Oh with the sim to build Anna's Many Murders had come into hard times a few months ago when Anna's opened and Bryn could no longer afford to keep up the rent. The build has since come down but fortunately for us, she was able to make a machinima of her exhibit beforehand.

Bryn Oh's "Anna's Many Murders" Exhibit to Close

Checking Second Life artist Bryn Oh's blog, the "Anna's Many Murders" story art exhibit will soon be closing.

Unfortunately the patron who had supplied me with a sim to build Anna's Many Murders had come into hard times a few months ago when Anna's opened and I took over paying for the sim. I can not afford to rent the sim any longer. So the build will come down in a week or so.

The build is on Bryn Oh (67, 208, 186)

Bryn Oh did finish a machinima of her exhibit recently.

Bryn Oh's "Anna's Many Murders"

Anna was an enigma to me on my first visit, so I went back several times. Anna is a creation of the SL and RL artist, Bryn Oh, who imagines and dreams many, many things.

Her book about Anna will lead you through fields of grasses, to a dark house where you will begin a journey to see what Anna is all about. Bryn offers you a notecard to help you find the lighting that is most effective for the viewing along the way. Take the time to adjust the settings . It is worth it. The way is not an easy one so be careful as you open doors to pass to the next page, or whatever you may see. Look at everything or you may miss some things as I did on my first visit.

Bryn was greeting people as they arrived at the house. After I finished the trail I wondered how she got this idea . She told me that once on a subway all was silent in the car and as she looked around at all the people, each was either on a phone, a blackberry, or some such instrument. Then she saw them all with attachments to their human body.

“So this story is about people adding to their own body until they are no longer human in a way,” She told me, you will see Anna adding things to people, opening them up and adding a leaf or something she thinks of as nature.” But, as you will see, Anna is also losing something of herself, her mind.

This was a creation that Bryn made to rest from the emotional completion of the Rabbicorn stories. I found it to be not as relaxing as she did, but she said “I like blue humour.”

Visit and follow the story along to the watery end. I plan to visit one more time at least.

Bryn Oh (69, 209, 186).

SL sculptural works are exhibited among the trees and along the shores of the western half of Heron Forest in Heron Shire sim. A special Director's Show is located in the Raglan Tree Gallery. TP kiosks to the display locations are on the grounds of the festival.

"We are so excited to see such a wonderful collection of excellent works exhibited by the artists of Second Life," said Teal Freenote, ArtWalk Organizer, herself one of the exhibiting artists.
