 Checking the Second Life Forums, on "How Does Your SL Look Today" on page 682 there was this post by Spiffy Voxel, which was a response to one by Ernest Deed, Spiffy expressing disappointment that the hat on the Newser's SL23B exhibit was not "a cunningly-disguised flying-saucer."

 

Well, we ave had a few flying saucer cartoons over the years.

Second Life Birthday Starts Today

 

 After weeks of preparation, the Second Life Twenty Third Birthday Celebrations, also known as the SL23B, begins today. There's smaller events such as Meet The Lindens, music concerts, the Yapestry of Time, and of course the exhibits by regular residents, hundreds of them.

 

The main area has forty-one sims, with a separate area for Adult-themed exhibits and one stage for unfiltered music performances, totaling fourteen sims. 

 

Among those with exhibits is the Second Life Newser, in the SLB Beguile sim. Sadly due to real-life, the talented Silvia Ametza whom has done most of our builds and all of them for the past several years was not able to do one this year. So as a backup plan, the office from the SL9B is back, with a few touches.

The Opening Ceremony, with Philip Linden speaking, will be from 1 to 2 PM at the Orpheum Theater, with three suggested teleport locations:

Following Philip's speech will be several music events, with Merryjest Starchild and dancers performing the first one.

Be sure to have plenty of fun. For those with older computers, coming by late at night should help with the lower lag.

The Newser Is Approved To Be In The SL23B

 

 We got the news last week, but wanted to wait until we received the final stage of approval, the plot of land. We got word of that yesterday, and now we can say we've "thrown our hat into the ring."

 

The Second Life Newser will be part of the Second Life Birthday, the SL23B. 

 

Our plot's in SLB Beguile. The big hat's our marker until the exhibit is placed there. 

 

So what will it be? Well, you'll see. For now, this is all we can show of the plot, at least until the opening on Thursday June 18.

The Raglan Shire Artwalk

 

One of Second Life's most noted yearly art shows, and Raglan Shire's best known annual event, is now taking place: The Raglan Shire Artwalk. Occasionally called "art on a hedge" by the local tinies, there's a huge amount of art available to see.

 

The Artwalk officially opened on Sunday May 17.  To start things off with a bang, there was a concert in which Mia Rose sang at 11 AM SL time, followed by Nivor the singing chicken. The latter had a few jokes about someone in a hen avatar singing the tunes, and even Nivor himself joined in with a couple songs about frying poultry, to prove he wasn't afraid of anything "fowl" happening, let alone fox reporters. 

 

There's plenty of artwork to look at. Some are prints of real-life paintings and drawings. But there's also Second Life screenshots, and prints of real-life photographs, as well as some three-dimensional sculpture. And much of it reflects the whimsy of the Raglan community. Some of the art also has a "buy" option, so you can take home some copies to put on the wall of your own virtual space. 

 

There's also a face-painting booth in which your avatar's face becomes a canvas itself (might work only on tiny avies). There was a "hedgiepillar" to ride as it walked around the art displays. And then there's Catten Carter "Art-o-Matic 3000," in which you yourself end up part of the art, albeit briefly. 

 

The Artwalk goes to June 14. During this time, other events will be going on in Raglan. So don't be surprised if while touring the pictures, you hear the high-pitched cheers and applause of the locals in the distance.

SL22B Starts Today

 

 After weeks of preparation, the Second Life Birthday celebrations finally start today. The builds are finished (baring a few last minute minor tweaks), and ready for the public to see them. 

 

The area for the celebration makes up 52 sims, including eight for adult-rated exhibits not shown on this map, being some distance to the east.

 

This includes the SL Newser's exhibit, at southeast SLB Enchant. Built by the talented Silvia Ametza and her team, it shows how time has altered the Pyramids of Giza.

The event begins at 11AM SL time when the sims all open. At 12 Noon today is the Opening Ceremony by Patch Linden at the Royal Keep at SLB Mesmerize (245/10/76), followed by numerous music events at the stages, with the resident-built exhibits available at any time from start to finish.

The Second Life Birthday is over. But before the sims closed, the Newser had a chance to check out a few more exhibits. We naturally spend time to get a good look at our own first, built by Silvia Ametza and her team. So what did it look like close up? And what else did we manage to capture on camera?

SL21B Begins Today

 

 

For those waiting for the Second Life Birthday, today is the big day. Sometime today, the sims will open to all, and the music stages, the shop and hop, and the exhibits will be open for all to see.

It is unknown just what time the sims will be open, but the Opening Ceremony will be 2PM, hosted by Patch Linden. It will be at the Aquatorium theater in SLB Mesmerize, SLB Pizzazz, and SLB Spellbound. At 3 PM, the music begins at the three music theaters, The Nimbus, Firestone Keep, and The Stonehold.

 

 

This includes the Newser exhibit, built by Silvia Ametza and her team, located at SLB Incredible (23/26/21).

SL Newser Is In "The Birthday"

 

 

 The sims for the Second Life Birthday are now open to exhibitors. This includes the Newser. And so we're throwing our hat into the ring, so to speak. Or rather, marking the plot with my hat. 

Unfortunately, that will be about the only picture from inside the SLB grounds we'll be able to show. The Lab has stated they want a news blackout of anything going on inside these sims. But we can still show maps. And since our last map picture, the sims have started to be grouped more together. 

This year's Second Life Birthday lasts from Friday June 21 to July 21, a full month. The theme this year is "Elements."

 

Bellisseria Anniversary Grounds And Bubbles

 

Gemma Cleanslate has been busy. With Bellisseria celebrating it's anniversary, she was at the Fairgrounds checking the sights and the tours and other activities. She also checked out Cica Ghost's newest art exhibition, "Bubbles," featuring creatures under the sea.

Interview With Jarden Alexis on The PBC Cultural Arts Center And The Black History Month Exhibit

 

Last month, the Premier Business Center hosted a Black History Month exhibit at its Cultural Arts Center. The Newser crew decided to interview the PBC's owner, Jarden Alexis. Dancerina Starlight met up with her, and asked her about the CAC and its exhibit. Jarden had much to say.

"Tracks To Trenches"

 

 

With this being Veterans Day week, it caught the Newser's attention that the Zany Zen Railway was doing a commemoration in honor of the soldiers of the First World War, "Tracks to Trenches." 

It's that time of year again when we remember those who fought for us, as always the ZZR will be remembering the men and women who served on the WW1 trench railways, delivering vital support to the front line troops. ... During this special tribute, the ZZR will transform into a front-line service, paying homage to all those who served during this critical period in history. You can choose to ride the rails in our Troop Transport, experiencing the journey as soldiers did, or join the munitions train responsible for supplying our troops on the front lines.

 

I dropped in on the last day the exhibit was still being set up. The volunteers were dressed looking more like they were getting ready for a wild party than a military exhibition, but they did their job well. the station had plenty of barbed wire and an observation tower next to it, with a trench and British Mark 1 tanks and Sopwith Camels across the road. At the station itself, small trains were making their rounds. I hopped on one after getting a ticket, and traveled to a couple other stations, the engineer telling any soldiers boarding, "keep your battle bowlers on."

I had a few words with Zen Swords-Galway (ZenriaCo Resident), one of the women setting up the exhibit. She told me this was the eighth year in a row the ZZR had done an exhibit like this. She enjoyed the banter from the bot engineers, "love those announcements, we got supah lucky and found a actor in SL who did a fairly good British accent."

World War One, originally called The Great War, has been overshadowed by the Second World War, particularly in American history books. But it still had a huge impact on world history. All the death and destruction was a profound shock to Western Civilization and would lead to what some called "The Age of Anxiety" which would last for some decades. Almost 20 million were killed and about as many wounded, many in the static trench warfare that characterized the fighting on the Western Front in which thousands would get killed in fighting a battle and the front line would barely change. The war toppled empires, resulted in the creation of the world's first Communist dictatorship, and although called "The war to end all wars" sadly a generation later the world would be caught up in an even greater global conflict.

 

The exhibit will be up until Monday November 13.

The 2024 Election US Presidency Exhibit

 

 

I recently came across an exhibit for next year's election in America, the 2024 Election US Presidency Exhibit. It's a place where one can learn a little more about the country's Presidential Election.

Review information about voting and voter registration, key dates for the 2024 election, Democratic and Republican Parties and candidates, and more! Collect party supplies! Enjoy refreshments from the Campaign Cafe! Start your own fireworks show!

The U.S. Presidency has been an exhibit topic at Learning Virtualē from September 2012 through March 2014 (for the 2012 presidential election and more) and April 2015 to present (for the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections and more). 

 

Looking around, there was a place to pick up bottled water and a hamburger or hot dog, or other goodies. There was also a sign "Exercise your Constitutional right to vote!" 

 

Among the displays was one of voter trends in recent years. There was also a billboard giving out notecards of recent Presidential and Presidential election scandals and controversies "and every Presidency seems to have an alleged scandal or a few." There was one place where one could read charts on voting statistics, such as what percentage of what age group went out and voted. The chart displayed was stating older people are more likely to vote, though in recent elections more younger people were coming to the polls. 

There were also a couple places where one could get a little information on the candidates, one for the Democrats and another for the Republicans. With this upcoming election having a Democrat as the incumbent, there were only a couple other candidates listed besides President Biden running for the nomination by the party. In contrast, there was a long list of candidates running for the Republican nomination for the Presidential race, such as former President Donald Trump who has been having a consistent lead in the polls. While fortunes in politics can, and have, change wildly in a short time, there is the likelyhood of the next US Presidential election having the same two candidates by the two major parties as in the previous one. This would be only one other time in more than a century this has happened, in 1956  when the Republican Dwight Eisenhower faced the Democrat Adlai Stevenson. Neither of the major parties have ever before nominated a former President to run in a Presidential Election in American history since Grover Cleveland in1892.  .

Learning Virtualē was founded by Addison Loxely and describes itself as "a group and site for educators, students, and others interested in the advancement of e-learning in (higher) education, particularly the integration of SL into learning experiences."

Serenity's "The Fantastic Future of Health"

 

There are many exhibits at the Second Life Birthday.  Among them is one by Serenity (SerenKitty), "The Fantastic Future of Health Care." The exhibit at SLB Fabulous would discuss what she felt were the shortcomings of the US health care system, and the alternative she was working on.
