The 2024 Election US Presidency Exhibit

 

 

I recently came across an exhibit for next year's election in America, the 2024 Election US Presidency Exhibit. It's a place where one can learn a little more about the country's Presidential Election.

The U.S. Presidency has been an exhibit topic at Learning Virtualē from September 2012 through March 2014 (for the 2012 presidential election and more) and April 2015 to present (for the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections and more). 

 

Looking around, there was a place to pick up bottled water and a hamburger or hot dog, or other goodies. There was also a sign "Exercise your Constitutional right to vote!" 

 

Among the displays was one of voter trends in recent years. There was also a billboard giving out notecards of recent Presidential and Presidential election scandals and controversies "and every Presidency seems to have an alleged scandal or a few." There was one place where one could read charts on voting statistics, such as what percentage of what age group went out and voted. The chart displayed was stating older people are more likely to vote, though in recent elections more younger people were coming to the polls. 

There were also a couple places where one could get a little information on the candidates, one for the Democrats and another for the Republicans. With this upcoming election having a Democrat as the incumbent, there were only a couple other candidates listed besides President Biden running for the nomination by the party. In contrast, there was a long list of candidates running for the Republican nomination for the Presidential race, such as former President Donald Trump who has been having a consistent lead in the polls. While fortunes in politics can, and have, change wildly in a short time, there is the likelyhood of the next US Presidential election having the same two candidates by the two major parties as in the previous one. This would be only one other time in more than a century this has happened, in 1956  when the Republican Dwight Eisenhower faced the Democrat Adlai Stevenson. Neither of the major parties have ever before nominated a former President to run in a Presidential Election in American history since Grover Cleveland in1892.  .

Learning Virtualē was founded by Addison Loxely and describes itself as "a group and site for educators, students, and others interested in the advancement of e-learning in (higher) education, particularly the integration of SL into learning experiences."

CDS Election Update: The Candidates

 

On  April 18, the Confederation of Democratic Simiulators (CDS) made it's call for candidates in their upcoming elections. On May 2, the day after the deadline, the Dean, Delia Lake, announced the list.

With the number of candidates being exactly the number of offices, this usually means the election becomes a formality. But this time, there's also a referendum to vote on.

"Should CDS join the Virtual World Education Consortium and move to the VWEC Eduverse reserve?"

A proposal has been made for CDS to join the Virtual World Education Consortium (VWEC) and move the estate at no cost to an educational/non-profit reserve on the SL Grid.

The purpose of the VWEC Eduverse reserve is to bring educational communities together into a common area. That area will include welcoming spaces for socializing and educational purposes, and for providing convenient links to the larger educational community. As well as supporting diversity and inclusion, there will also be opportunities for collaborative educational projects, and for sharing best practice of learning within virtual environments.

The CDS Government and a group of citizens already active in the VWEC are convinced that the CDS would blend in well. We can contribute as one of the oldest democratic communities in Second Life and our numerous creators and instructors can work towards the goals of the VWEC Eduverse.

As a VWEC member region, we would anticipate mutual inspiration and collaboration with our new neighbors. This could also have positive effects on the further development of the CDS community.

We will remain an independent working democracy within this wider community.

The idea of joining the Eduverse was favored by the current Representative Assembly. But as RA member Almut Brunswick put it, "I prefer to make this vote more official and transparent to the CDS public." So the matter will be put to the voters as a referendum. The matter was discussed in the CDS forums.

The campaigning doesn't officially start until May 7. But already residents are expressing their support for the issue. At the Antiquariat Bookstore at Neufreistadt (154/165/173), those in the CDS group can pick up a t-shirt, courtesy of Lilith Ivory.

Voting starts when the polls open on May 14, and close on May 21. On June 1, the new term of the local government, the 37th, officially begins.

Call for Candidates for the 37th Term of CDS Government

 

It's election time in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators. Unlike most places in Second Life, the CDS chooses it's leadership. And twice a year, they have an election for their Representative Assembly and their Chancellor. 

The schedule for this spring's election go as follows:

April 8 - Census of citizens for eligibility to run for office

April 15 - Citizen qualification deadline for right to vote

April 18 - Call for Candidates for Chancellor and for RA

May 1 - Deadline for Declaration of Candidacy

May 4 - Dean posts list of candidates

May 7 - Campaigning starts

May 14 - Polls open

May 21 - Polls close

May 22 - 31, incoming RA take their affirmations of office and members meet to elect their officers

June 1 - The RA and Chancellor of the 37th Government of the CDS take office.

It was on April 17, a day early, that the Call for Candidates went out.

Today (April 17) is the first day to declare your candidacy for the offices of Representative Assembly (RA) and Chancellor. These are very important offices for our CDS Community. When we elect these representatives we are electing friends and neighbors to work on our behalf to set the direction of our community, enact our laws and regulations, and manage all the tasks that keep the CDS a wonderful place to live. Now is your time to participate and declare candidacy.

So far, one person, Almut Brunswick, has declared his intention to run. More will certainly follow in the next ten days. 

In contrast to many real-life elections, the CDS elections have remained largely drama-free for some years.

CDS Election Update

 

On October 21, the fall elections in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators started with the call for qualified residents to announce their candidacy. Yesterday, Wednesday November 4, Delia Lake the CDS Dean posted the list of candidates.

The period for Declaration of Candidacy for the 34th Term of Government for the CDS has concluded. Our offices in government positions subject to election consists of one Chancellor and five members of the Representative Assembly (RA).

Normally there would be a short campaign season for about a week before the polls open. But with this short list of candidates, any events wouldn't be debates.

Usually at this time campaigning starts, but with only 5 RA candidates for 5 seats and only one chancellor candidate there are no real elections necessary.

CDS Campaigning Begins Tomorrow

Earlier this month, there was a call in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators to local residents for candidates to run for office. Several answered for the Representative Assembly, or RA. But only one announced she was running for the Chancellorship.

The following citizens are standing for office in the coming elections:

One position as Chancellor : Emilia Dagostino (emilia.avindar)
With no other candidate declaring, Emilia Dagostino will be the Chancellor for the 32th term.

Campaigning can begin on Saturday Nov 2th.

The CDS Campaigning Act imposes limits on how candidates run for office. Campaigning starts two weeks before the end of the election, and ends when the polls close. Candidates are "expected to conduct campaigns in a civil and respectful manner." Griefing, spamming, defamation and libel are expressly forbidden. Candidates are encouraged to hold campaigning events. And there are several limited on campaign signs and where they can be placed.

This week, the CDS community is holding it's biannual elections. On Monday, several candidates running for it's Representative Assembly appeared at the Colonia Nova Amphitheatre. They would give statements about their campaign, and answer a few questions.

Update on the CDS Election

As the days get shorter for the people in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators to decided on whether or not to run, several people have thrown their hat in the ring. So far, Tanoujin Milestone, Rose Gray, and Lyubov (20180414) have declared their candidacy for the Representative Assembly. Hannah Marie Tempestwolf's (Han Held) had declared her intention to run again for another term as Chancellor. But last week, she posted an angry group announcement to the community following finding the CDS Museum which she runs almost completely empty. She would later announce she was withdrawing her candidacy for reelection, explaining what happened in her blog.

Since Han's withdraw from the election, two people so far have declared for the Chancellorship: Drewski Northman and 恭子 Kyoko (Samara Barzane). With two candidates, this means a race and campaign for the CDS next month.

CDS Citizens, those who own property on the community estate sims, have until 12 Noon SL time on October 31 to declare their intention to run for an office. The campaigns officially start November 3, and the polls open at Noon SL time on Nov 10, and close a week later on Noon SL time Nov 17.

What Happened With the CDS Elections?

"Suppose they gave an election and nobody came." That wasn't quite what happened with the Confederation of Democratic Simulators, or CDS. But the number of people who stepped up to run for office was small, just enough to fill the seats. Both the soon to be Chancellor, and the current CDS leader, had a few words about the matter to say to the Newser.

New Chancellor In The CDS

A picture of the celebration for the winners of the recent election in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators. Last Saturday on May 24, Cleopatra Xigalia contacted me to say Ceasar Xigalia had won the Chancellorship. He had outperformed the other candidate, Patroklus Murakami, 34 to 31  (details in CDS forum).

There was also a referendum on whether or not to purchase a new sim, which passed.
