A Marine's Story (2011)

Memorial Day has many stories. One would first be told one Veterans Day in 2011. At the Second Life Veterans Tribute, Laken Titanium, a US Marine in real-life, was introduced to me. He had a story to tell, not of himself, but rather of a number of his platoon whom sadly never made it home.

Read the story from 2011 in People.

Happy Birthday US Marines

 *

Wednesday November 10 was the anniversary of the founding of the US Marines, 246 years since the founding of the Continental Marines in 1775 (July 11, 1798 was when they were re-founded under the Federal Government). To celebrate, the Veterans Tribute held a party in their honor, with a number of residents whom were Marine veterans present.

The 15th Annual Second Life Veteran's Tribute requests your presence in joining us as we celebrate 246 years of the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS with a formal ball.  The ball is open to both military and civilians.

DJ Huntyr played the music from 5 to 7 PM.From 7 to 10 PM, the music was DJed by Flattop Ewing.  A benediction was done by Samson Rowley.

There was a cake in the corner. There was also a present giver that when clicked would offer a package. When unpacked, the person would get a Marine-themed bracelet.

This is far from the last of the Veterans Tribute events. Today, there are eight hours of events planned there from 2 to 10 PM.

Some Veterans Day Events

It was a hundred years ago last week, November 11, in which the first Veterans Day, or Armistice Day as it was called then, was held. In real life, there were parades, ceremonies, and other events. There were also some events held in Second Life to honor those who served in the Armed Forces.

Veterans Tribute And Sci-Fi Expo Return

With Halloween over, attention turns to upcoming holidays. Among these is Veterans Day. And so the annual Second Life Veterans Tribute, the thirteenth one, has returned.

The Tribute itself is non-political and serves one purpose and one purpose only and that is to honor all the men and women that have given willing of their time to protect the lives we enjoy today.

This wall consists of names submitted by those in Second Life to honor their loved ones from any branch of military service, in any country. Honoring those currently servinc, those who have served, and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country.

There will be at least one event at the Tribute, the SL Marine Corps Ball, on November 9, the day before the anniversary of the official founding of the Marine Corps.

Also taking place is the Sci-Fi Expo. This sister event to the annual Sci-Fi Convention takes place every fall while the Con takes place in Spring or Summer. Taking place on the Solaris Station sim, the event raises funds for the Relay for Life, which does so in behalf of the American Cancer Society.

The kickoff for the Expo was on Saturday Nov 2. Further information can be found on the Sci-Fi Con website at https://scificonventionsl.wordpress.com/ .

Veterans Day Tribute Concert at Veterans Isle

In the evening of Sunday November 10, Veterans Isle held a music event in honor of both Veterans Day and the US Marines Anniversary.

The concert was a Tony Keith tribute, and a group of residents played the roles of the country music singer and a band. They were cheered on by members of the crowd.

A number in the crowd were real life veterans, including some Marines. It was 238 years ago on November 10, 1775 that the US Marines were founded. While their weapons and tactics have changed over the years, their mission and certainly their dedication remains the same.

The Second Life Enquirer was also there, and interviewed several veterans about what the holiday means to them.

Nearby was a replica of the Tomb of the Unknowns. The bright lights made taking a picture difficult, but it's presence was unmistakable.

At the last Sunday of the month, Veterans Isle holds their monthly Wounded Warrior Tribute, led by Frets Nirvana.

A Marine's Story

Behind the big story of the Second Life Veterans Tribute last week, there were smaller, more personal stories. Among them was that of Laken Titanium, a US Marine in real-life, whom a number of his platoon met their end in Iraq. Second Life Newser had the fortune to meet up with him, and he had a story to share.
