Eleven Years of the SL Newser

What is it like to take part in a dream, and one day being the ones to continue the dream?

It was eleven years ago, Saturday June 5 2010 that the leading newsletter of Second Life at the time closed, and the one formed by four of it's reporters that carried on where it left off began. For myself and others, especially SL Newspaper editor Dana Vanmoer, the past several months had been a challenging time. In October, the SLN's main sponsor had gone bankrupt with no warning. Linden Lab had made some decisions such as closing their mentor program that made people wonder about their concerns of the well being of the residents. Over time a number of reporters had left. And events in real life had forced the paper's owner, JamesT Juno, offline and were dragging Dana away. Fortunately I could update the paper when Dana couldn't.

Finally in a meeting in early April, Dana informed us she could no longer keep the Second Life Newspaper going, and it would close in two months. We were shocked and surprised, Gemma suggesting there could be another way. But Dana felt without James' input, there were no other options. After a little time to recover and talk, four of us, Gemma Cleanslate, Grey Lupindo, Shellie Sands, and myself came to the decision to form a new one. And so just as Dana was finishing the closing article for the Second Life Newspaper, the Second Life Newser had begun.

For us, it was a scary time. And for me personally I wondered if I was up to the task. But we had a job to do, and with big stories coming in such as the layoff of a third of Linden Lab, the return of Philip Linden, the Second Life Birthday, and the Relay for Life, we went to work reporting the news. We soon had our office thanks to the Sunweaver community, then our first sponsor, the Podex Exchange. By the end of the year, it was clear we were around to stay. The news would continue to be reported.

And so over the past eleven years, we've written much about the people, places, events, and things in Second Life. While I would make a few changes from Dana's model, the Newser would report the news in much the same style as the SL Newspaper did. While yours truly was the one in charge, we were a team effort, reporting from our perspectives. Shellie had stories about her misadventures with bunny raising. Grey liked to explore around a lot, but would also report on the goings-on with her home community. Gemma would also explore, report on a new art gallery exhibit, and once in a while talk about a nice little fishing event. Myself, I would do a little bit of most everything from writing about goings-on in the Sunweaver community, to breaking news about Linden Lab, an interesting sim I came across, amusing advertisement articles for the Podex Exchange, and more.

Over time much has changed, both with the Newser and Second Life itself. While this paper didn't cover Second Life in it's golden age, it did began as the Lab was reacting to it's end. Over time, the Newser covered three changes of leaders at Linden Lab, and various changes of strategy. We covered the introduction of mesh which would change the way objects and avatars were made. We covered changes in the terms of service, such as one vauge change that caused confusion about the rights of content creators for many months. More recently, there has been Second Life's long slow decline in it's numbers coming to a halt, and then the virtual world experiencing a resurgence as it's numbers grew once more, and then came it's getting acquired by investors.

And the Newser itself would change some. Sadly Shellie Sands and Grey Lupindo would depart as circumstances in real-life dictated changes in plans. But others would come in over time such as DrFran Babcock, Xymbers Slade, Any1 Gynoid, Becky Shamen, Breezes Babii, and many others over time. Each had their own perspective of the virtual world, and covered Second Life from that perspective. Those whom had only been on for just a few months were just as welcome as those whom had been on for many years as sometimes those whom have been around for just a year or less can notice things "oldbies" often miss. And of course those whom have been around for a while have a sense of history and how things used to be, as well as earlier times when residents panicked about the virtual world ending and of course it didn't. In recent times, three fine reporters have joined the team: Anita Kimono, Dancerina Starlight, and Rosie.

But what never changed was our mission to get the news out of the people, places, and events of Second Life, and to do so without unnecessary controversy. Unlike the tabloids, we don't make things up outside of April Fool's day unless it's the occasional piece of SL fiction (such as the advertisements we used to do for Podex). Nor do we need to. Eventually some troublemaker reveals himself, or Linden Lab does something that results in unintended consequences. There have been a few times we've made a mistake, but we try to correct them.

We have done much. Over the past eleven years, we've posted over ten thousand briefs, announcements, videos, cartoons, and of course articles. And for those interested in what happened in the past, one can quickly go back to a certain time and see what was going on, such as previous Second Life Birthday and Relay Weekend events.

And now, eleven years have passed, with the virtual world we cover now reaching it's eighteenth year. Thanks to the combined efforts of our reporters over the years, and of course you the readers, we have not just endured but prospered. It's a different Second Life than the one we started in, but we cover it just the same.

And our future? Some of my friends feel all it would take for the virtual world to collapse is one really dumb move by Linden Lab. But the virtual world's demise has been predicted more times I can count. Most likely, it has at least several years left. Unless there's some unforeseen calamity such as an Internet-destroying solar flare or catastrophic economic calamity, Second Life is here to stay, at least for the rest of the decade. And the Newser will be around to cover it.

Special thanks to our sponsors Lorena Chung Estates, Montecito Bay, The Deathlands, Coral Estates, the Safe Waters Foundation, Farshore Radio, and the Sunweaver Estates. Special thanks to James and Dana who taught us how a newsletter should be run. And of course special thanks to you the readers whose readership makes this paper possible.

Luskwood's 11th Anniversary

Last weekend, Luskwood celebrated it's eleventh anniversary. The best known of furry locations, as well as the oldest community in Second Life, celebrated with live music and DJ tunes. Quite a few Luskwood noteables showed up for the occasion, in addition to visitors dropping by only for this one event. So what exactly went on?

My Take on SL11B, By DrFran Babcock

The Second Life Eleventh Birthday Birthday is over, at least officially. The sims however will still be up for a few more days before cleanup begins. So which exhibits stand out? DrFran Babcock went around the SL11B grounds, and found some that stood out quite well.

Happy 11th Birthday SL!

By Grey Lupindo

The birthday celebrations for Second Life are always special for me because my first visit, many years ago, led to me becoming a news reporter here in SL.   I always look forward to the creativity, beauty, and great people that I meet there each year.   This year’s celebration features 8 areas – Astound, Beguile, Enchant, Fascinate, Pizzazz, Spectacular, Spellbound, and Wonderous – with hundreds of things to do and see.   But it was fitting that I started my visit at the SL Newser building, located on Fascinate at SLNewser Office Building, SL11B Fascinate #20, SL11B Fascinate (78, 87, 21).
We have a great view from the conference room floor.  Early Monday morning I met up with fellow reporter Gemma Cleanslate, and we chatted a few minutes about the sights of SL11B.  After you check out the views, you can look at the cartoons to start your tour with a laugh.   On the second and third floor you will find our pictures, which link to our favorite articles.   I’m sure you’ll want to re-read all of them.
I met Motoko (marisa.warrhol) while she was visiting the news office.   She recommended that I see The Blackened Mirror, a nearby build by Aisling Sinclair.   This build is a movie set that lets you become part of the action.    Motoko said the movie set was awesome, and I agree.    It is located at L11B The Blackened Mirror, SL11B Fascinate (97, 112, 23).   The notecard states that it is, “... an animated television series that brings together elements of film noir, steampunk, and classic Lovecraftian horror. “   The show is produced here in SL, and can be seen on Treet TV, Aview TV, or on YouTube.  A HUD is included in their gift box so you can view the show in world, too.  Season 3 will be released in the Fall.
Next I began checking out some of our neighboring builds, beginning with Eternal Realms at  SL11B Fascinate (68, 32, 23).   This build features a mesh replica of an 1830 Victorian train.  It was created by Tintin Tuxing, and it also features great gifts.  I received a Victorian lamp and a mermaid golden harp.
SL11B has a great treat for all of us who love to hunt.    The hunt will cover all of the regions over four paths.    A large sign in front of participating builds lets you know to hunt here.    You can start anywhere, but HUNT SL at SL11B Fascinate (110, 38, 24) was my choice as a starting point.   In addition to lots of well-hidden prizes, the huge tower has information about many of the upcoming hunts.   I ran into fellow hunt-lovers ScouseGirl and Bee Sopor here.
If mazes appeal to you, be sure to check out Amazing Dreamz at SL11B Fascinate (69, 198, 31).   I found this to be a very difficult maze.  It was created by arniek Resident.    Inside are a tangle of colorful halls and ramps and many dead ends.   I finally gave up and cheated.  I flew to the rooftop patio where I could relax with Tai Chi and the soothing sounds of the waterfall.
My last stop for the day was at Relay For Life of Second Life, SL11B Fascinate (141, 189, 21).   This quiet spot is a beautiful garden with lovely music and places to relax.  They call it “A serene look into the future when the cure for cancer has been found.”   A lovely thought for a lovely place.

A complete list of all the sights and events on Fascinate, as well as the other sims, can be found on the SL11B website at  http://slcommunitycelebration.com.

SL11B: Tips For a Good Visit

After weeks of preparation and work on the part of the staff, the SL11Birthday celebration is finally here! Remember the first week will be party, party, party! Three stages full of entertainment  , live and djs . The schedule for each is on the website. The delightful outdoor Auditorium will host a number of speakers on many various issues for residents so take a good look at that schedule also. There will be lag of course so dress accordingly and come with fewer huds and embellishments to your avatar for comfort.

Since the 11 sims will remain open for a second week for viewing all the marvelous builds created especially for this event you should get a chance to see a lot. I caution you , though I have been there already for three weeks I have not seen everything and don’t expect to. Past experience tells me I won’t. There is so much to look at and investigate.

Don’t forget there is a hunt going on in all the sims in various builds. You will see a sign at those sites and need to take the time to go in and find your gift. Some creators also have their own freebie gifts set out for you too. I made a special folder for items picked up there so I can be “organized “ (laughs out loud).

I strongly recommend that you take a pod tour to see just what is there. There is a tour for the eastern sims and another for the western. It is narrated so you can see what you are passing by. Hop out anytime you want at a site. There are friendly greeters who can help you get around and pass out information. Don’t miss the vendors containing a special robot for the occasion and teddy bears and more

The best place to get all the information you need to move around the sims is the website. Keep this close and have a great time!!  http://slcommunitycelebration.com/

SL11B Press Day

The day before the Second Life Eleventh Birthday was officially opened to the public, it was opened to the press. As an exhibitor, Second Life's editor Bixyl Shuftan had already been seeing exhibits. But he dropped by the press tour anyway. The result was some perspectives on a few places he hadn't noticed before.

SL11B Sneak Peek: The Cake Stage

With only a day until the sims at the Second Life Eleventh Birthday celebration grounds close to exhibitors for inspections, yours truly looked around to take in the sights. Most I can't show the pictures, yet, but there was one exhibit I could: the "Cake Stage" in the middle of the SL11B grounds.

Unlike previous cake stages for SLB events, this one covers just two sims, not four. Still, it's quite sizable on the inside.

Looking up, what a dazzling sight, all those pretty lights, some forming geometric shapes.

Camming around, here's the stage looking down from the ceiling.

And here's the cake stage from above and outside, a beam heading up into the sky.

SL11B: Plot Holders

Gemma Cleanslate has been busy with her Exhibitor Assistant duties at the Second Live Eleventh Birthday (SL11B) sims, so her time for reporting has been a bit short. While she's come across a number of builds at the SL11B plots, it's still too early for pictures. But she has seen no shortage of plot holders, those little things builders leave to claim a plot while they work on the exhibit. So she took a few pictures.

See Gemma's pictures in Extra.

Second Life 11th Birthday Preparations

The SL11B is fast approaching though it seems far away yet.

The roads are down on all the sims. Stages are in progress. The auditorium is awaiting programs. The builders are waiting to enter. Yesterday I went to my training session for Exhibitor Assistant. Diana Renoir gave the training again this year. This will be my third year as an EA as we are called. Our job is to help the builders get settled on their plots and have the “tools” they need to do their work in the sims. We give them a slice of cake which contains all their information to make life easier for the next few weeks before the opening of the sims to the public.

The builders are most grateful to the EA’s throughout the next weeks because we can set their streams on the plots, put a landing point for them and a texture of identification of their plot. I took some pictures at the training session so you could see some of the people you may meet on the sims . I enjoy being in the sims during the building to witness the growth of the installations .

One thing I know, although I will spend time there in the next month before and during the event I will never get to see everything there is to see. The past two years have proven that to me. It is impossible!! There will be so much to explore on all those 11  sims. So I am warning you now to save more than one day to come during the public weeks. You really don’t want to miss all the sights, and freebies, and parties do you?

Keep an eye on the blog and check out those great videos and get ready for fun!

SL11B Sims In Progress

The sims for the Second Life Birthday celebration are online and on the map. This year, there is a total of twelve, eight of which are open to exhibitors.

SL11B Impressive
SL11B Spellbound
SL11B Electrify
SL11B Beguile
SL11B Astound
SL11B Fascinate
SL11B Wonderous
SL11B Enchant
SL11B Pizzazz
SL11B Astonish
SL11B Spectacular
SL11B Bear Island

This is a smaller number of sims than previous years. The SL11B blog conceded this, "making for a smaller but more streamlined event." But they insisted, "Smaller in size, but not smaller in energy. We have managed to fir all the usual buildings and event venues into a more compact area without compromising on quality." They also stated the smaller number of spaces for exhibitors meant that those applying to be exhibitors would have to act more quickly." Applications will be taken for a few more days until May 20th.

The sims themselves will be open to builders on May 30. The official birthday celebration will be from Sunday June 22 to Sunday June 29. The sims will remain open for several days afterwards for visitors to continue to see.

For more information, check the SL11B Blog.

And here is the fifth of the SL11B videos by Saffia Widdershins, "The Madman explains how Second Life businesses can apply to exhibit at the SL11B Community Celebration - and what they can and can't do here."

Press Release: Second Life Eleventh Birthday

The event will be held from Sunday June 22nd – Sunday June 29th—seven days of amazing exhibits, music, conversation, debate, firework displays, games, puzzles, sports and everything else the wonderfully inventive communities of Second Life™ can pack into seven days and 11 sims.
Actually, even that won’t be the end of it, as the sims will be open for a further seven days for everyone to explore.

What’s our theme?
The theme this year takes inspiration from a quote by the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill:
The empires of the future are the empires of the mind.
Last year’s theme was “Looking Forward, Looking Back,” but we focused mostly on looking back, and rightly so, as 10 years was an important milestone and a perfect opportunity to reflect back on where we came from.
This year it’s time to look forward; to imagine where we are headed.
When Winston Churchill said this in 1943, he could not have imagined a virtual world like Second Life, but now, more than seventy years later, his words have come true in this new world that we have created.
If there’s one thing that makes SL unique, it’s our community of users. Users from all corners of the globe come together under a single umbrella to build a community that comes from our minds and our imaginations. Everything we see, touch and use in Second Life is a product of our imaginations, our minds, and our community.
And this year, at the SL11B Community Celebration, we want to celebrate precisely that!
Get thinking. Get imagining. Get creative!

How do I get involved?
Applications are now open for Performers, Volunteers and speakers and performers  in the Auditorium. We will need lots of volunteers to make this a success, so please consider whether you can give some time to helping out. We can promise you a lot of fun!
Applications for Exhibitors (i.e. people who want a plot to build on) will open on April 27th.
The closing date for Exhibitor, Performer and Auditorium applications is May 26th.

How do I find out more?
You can find out more by following this blog, and by following us on Facebook and Twitter.
We also have a Flickr page where you can paste your own images when the sims open. You make see some sneak images from the team before that so keep watching!
