Dropping By The Fandom Con

The other day, I dropped by the Fandom Con at a music event at the ship stage in Nautical (202/70/23). DJ Knut was performing for a small but enthusiastic crowd. There was one more in the water as well, a mermaid. Nearby were some of the raffles mentioned in the Newser a couple days ago, but the focus was on the music.

Looking around, there were a couple stores, such as these two in the WastedLands. At least some of the money of each purchase goes to the American Cancer Society. Or one can simply donate in the numerous kiosks around.

And plenty of scenery as well.

The Fandom Con goes on to Sunday, August 11.

At The Renaissance Festival (Joust a Linden Today)

The Second Life Renaissance Festival has been going on all week. In a four sim area next to American Cancer Society, various events have been taking place such as jousting (above), melee combat, and roleplay. But there's also been plenty of music events people can just drop in and dance.

Besides the DJ events, there are also live performers. There was one late last night at 9PM by Dee Freund (Dilah Halostar), the "Grand Finale" that night.

The Festival runs to Sunday October 3. Events in the final few days include jousting with a Linden or Mole today, Thurs Sept 30 from 12 to 3 PM.

On Friday October 1, if you want to get back at the Lindens for something such as the lag or teleport crashes, you'll have your chance as several Lindens and Moles will be at the pillory. The pelting with rotten tomatoes and other less than fresh produce lasts from 1 to 3 PM.

Saturday October 2 is also the day of the drawing of a raffle, the chance to create a new last name for residents to use (and the option to change your surname). The drawing will be 8:45PM SL time. Tickets cost 100L each, or 3 for 200L.

And for those looking for a game, there is the Queen's Quest. Somehow, someone stole her library, and there will be a reward for whom can get it back.

For more information, check the event's blog here: https://slrenaissancefestival.com/

Correction: We originally reported that the Lindens at the Pillory event was on Saturday Oct 2. We apologize for the error.

At the RFL Black Sea Raft-Up

On Sunday June 24 from 9AM to 3PM in a four-sim area in the Blake Sea was the "Raft-Up" event. This was a six-hour Relay event held by the Sail for Life team. There was music, dancing, and lots of boats of all sizes.

Besides the Relay kiosks, one could also donate by purchasing tickets to a raffle. One would "add" the ticket, then touch the raffle drawing they wanted to enter. Single tickets cost 100L each, with larger amounts costing less per ticket. Among the prizes available were boats and sailboats.

The event was packed, and yours truly crashed a number of times, so I didn't stay long. Sail for Life has been a long-lasting team in the Relay, having been around for a number of years. Their team page shows them as having raised $1015 US dollars, or a little over 250,000 Lindens, Platinum level fundraising.

Veterans Isle HFOT Bennefit Raises Over 100,000 Lindens

On Sunday November 20, Veterans Isle held their monthly fundraiser for Homes For Our Troops, a charity that "builds mortgage-free, specially adapted homes nationwide for severely injured veterans." Although the event is usually held on the last Sunday of every month, it was held on the one before this time due to Thanksgiving Weekend. The event went on from 4PM to 9PM SL time (Midnight EST).

First at 4PM SL time was Waya Snowpaw, in real life a veteran for 20 years whom often performs as a DJ at a veterans motorcycle club. Next was Frets Nirvana, who helped organize the event, played his guitar while singing for the audience for the second hour.

At 6PM SL time was Keeba Tammas and her "Tiny Maniacs" band of tiny avatars, who played instruments while she sang for the crowd. "I loved the tinies! They were cute!" One would later say, "I almost put one in my pocket. He was holding up a little sign that said 'Free to a good home!' (grin)" At the end of Keeba's set, the tinies lined up and "Time to Tiny Raver Dance!" And the diminutive band members began tromping up and down as Irish music played.

At 7PM SL time was Maxx Sabertooth, A Rhythm and Blues singer whom yours truly knew from the Queen of Hearts riverboat club years ago. He would get down from the stage and mingle among the audience. Maxx still had his touch.

For the last hour was guitarist and singer Reggie Sunset. As he played, the total amount raised in the two house shaped kiosks on both sides of the stage began to get high. at 8:30 PM, the 75,000 Linden mark was reached. At 8:47, the total was at 91,000 Lindens.

There was also a raffle for a motorcycle during the benefit.  The bike was provided by Lil Birds Customs. Although the one on display at the event was in US Army camouflage, the winner could chose a paint job of any branch of the military. Entries cost 100 Lindens each, and a total of 31 were bought, for a total of 3,100 raised. The winner of the raffle was Psychoblaze Resident.

At the end, a total of 101,350 had been raised in the two kiosks. Combined with the raffle, it was a total of 104,450. Talking to Frets, he commented, "Right now ....what I have to say is ...this wore me out!" People had a number of compliments, "This was wonderful way to spend a Sunday night!" "Thanks for the wonderful tunes, again." "Lovely set!"  ""Great show!

The next benefit at Veterans Isle should be on December 18.

Second Life Cheerleading Squad "Funday" Gets Bronze

This weekend saw a number of events for the Relay for Life. Among them was the "Funday" event by the Second Life Cheerleading Squad. This twelve hour event lasting from 9AM Second Life time to 9PM (Midnight EST) had a number of musicians performing live, and raised thousands of Lindens, enough to put the team total to 81,500 and into Bronze rank for fundraising.

Please join the Second Life Cheerleading Squad for a day of fun and doing good as we present our first FUNDAY of 2016 on March 13th from 9 am slt to 9 pm to raise funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life program.

Our theme this month is CARS. We will have a full slate of live singers as well as some great DJ's to entertain

The event, which took place at the Squad's Cheertopia sim, had eleven singers: Marqs, Harmonia Trefoil, Stinna Celt, Phemie Alcott, Maximillion Kleene, Madmax Huet, Phillip Moura, Laidback Celt, Gibson, Aria, and Dj Dione.

We have some awesome cars on display and raffles to win your own cool car.

At there event, there were a number of cars lined up, each with a kiosk in front, and people could "vote" for their favorite one via donating. There was also a raffle, in which a donation of 50L got someone a chance at winning a purple race car.

Despite some "unscheduled maintenance" of the Grid by Linden Lab, in which "some residents may experience login issues and residents in-world may be logged off or experience degraded performance," the event was a success, and the Second Life Cheerleading Squard joined the handful of teams which had reached the Bronze rank a week after the Relay's start. Two teams have already reached Gold, the Relay Rockers and the Gorean team, and one Platinum, Unmasking A Cure. As of now ten teams, including the new Builder's Brewery and the team of the Newser office neighbors' the Sunbeamers, are in the newly created "Rising Star" rank (25,000 to 75,000 Lindens raised).

The Cheerleading Squad's Funday wasn't the only event going on. T-1 Radio's Trader Whiplash played some music at a Narnia-themed stage at Fashion for LIfe7. There was a "breedable" pet lion wandering about. But fortunately the only complaint was about cat hair around.

Stay tuned for more Relay events, including Trader's "Bid Me Bald" and the first Giant Snail Cross-Sim Race.

RFL Christmas Expo Ends Today

After eleven days, the Relay for Life Christmas Expo ends today. Over the weekend, a number of events took place. One was an auction yesterday on Sunday in which about ninety avatars crowded into a single sim to take part. Another was the  Fifth Annual Holiday Of Hope Gala, pictured above, which took place from 4 to 8PM on Saturday December 13. Prizes were given out about every ten minutes to some lucky resident. There was also a raffle in which those paying 100L had a chance to win over 31,000 Lindens worth of gift cards. The winner was Sidney Spore.

The Newser's Gemma Cleanslate was a tireless volunteer throughout the event, helping out those attending, including fellow reporters who dropped in to cover. She would write down a few words in the Expo blog

This year I personally experienced how much the American Cancer Society is able to provide assistance to those who need support during treatment.  It is a pleasure to help raise funds for continued research and the help the ACS provides to individuals. I appreciate the Relay For Life so much more!

We'll write a little more about the Expo later this week, but for now enjoy the last day of the event, and the scenery before it vanishes away.

Holiday Decor

By Gemma Cleanslate

Can you believe it is that time again? Time to do Christmas decorating! The Corner is loaded with  Christmas trees, wreaths, a full skating rink , snowmen, sleds, and so much more to help you decorate your home or business. The best part is that all the items are free.

As usual Vickijo Rivera had arranged to have her creators place them for those who can use them, as she says, “Each of us has a special talent in this world and this group is for both creators and for those that just 'dig in the dirt' and enjoys anothers' gifts that give freely.  Amor Fati! (love of fate)”  Not only do group members get to gather  goods but anyone can come and collect the offerings.

If you would like to join the group for future notices you are very welcome to do so. Right now there is a weekly raffle still going on for members. After you pick up all your free decor take a walk up the stairs in the building to the second floor where you will find the raffle information. I will be looking for more decor for you as the season goes on. Thanks to Pink and Zain and Saucy for the wonderful sim and contents. They caretake the sim for all of us to enjoy.
