Press Release: RFL - Hitting the Ground Running.

Hi Relay World!

Everyone has hit the ground running, and the RFL Of SL is filled with feet, paws, hooves, shoes and boots taking a stand. We have everyone getting loud in group chat. We have over 200 amazing events so far, attracting people from all over the grid to finish this fight. A chorus is filling this grid, with each and every one of your voices being heard. "We WILL make this a future without cancer!"

So many of you have gotten down to work, and have no plans to slow down. We're not quite yet to April, and along with having already raised $111,000+, many teams have already made their way into precious metal and gemstone levels. One team has already hit sapphire. Five more now sit at platinum. Six others are currently gold. A dozen have reached silver. And, incredibly, 56 teams have already made their way to bronze, and undoubtedly, we will watch all those numbers - and our total - climb over the next few months.

The unity we have seen already has been inspiring, to say the least, as teams have worked together on events, and so many people have made their presence felt throughout all of Relay.

What an amazing March it's been. But, knowing you all the way I do, I know the best is yet to come.

The purple army is on the move. Get loud, and get louder, because cancer fears noise just as much as it fears the walker.

What an amazing beginning to what will be our greatest season ever. The Future Is Now... Let's make it one without cancer!

The 2015 Relay for Life Kickoff

A few days ago on Sunday March 8, the 2015 Relay for Life season "The Futire is Now" officially opened. The event was attended by well over a hundred avatars most of the time, and at one point about 170. Bixyl Shuftan was there to take a few pictures of the event fueled by the enthusiasm of the many volunteers.

A Big Opening for the Relay Season

Sunday March 8 was the opening day of the Relay for Life fundraising season. In the two sims south of the American Cancer Society, RFL Kickoff and RFL Kickoff 2, over a hundred residents gathered to start the megaevent fundraiser that will last five months. Quite a bit happened, and it was a busy day. So the full story will have to wait until later this week.

American Cancer Society Island

The Second Life Relay for Life kicked off the season Sunday the 8th  as you know. I took a trip over to the American Cancer Society Island to see how it looked this year. It is spectacular . The main building is lovely with the surrounding area restful  with fountains, gazebos, natural areas filled with spring trees, shrubs and flowers. In the main building there is all you ever needed to know about the Relay in Second Life , and in Real Life too. There is a viewer on the wall with pictures of avatars and why they relay. The history of the Second Life Relay is there , year by year with scenes from the events from each. There is a chart of overall structure of the Relay for Life SL Committee, who is in charge of what that is very helpful. Upstairs there is an area where you can learn about the full mission of the Relay around the entire globe. Although the Relay is all for the benefit of the American Cancer Society its results extends around the world in its scope.

There are graphs explaining so much about the reasons to relay. On the wall there are resources for  information on almost any aspect of cancer that you can imagine. On the upper floor there is a meeting area for volunteers. Outside the building there is an events calendar. Across the way is a building that is  our making strides against breast cancer and International building. It will be filled this month so you can visit and see the far reaching implications.

The Hope Haven building is inviting with art on the walls, and an offer of support . Pick up the notecard outside the door. It says in one section, “'A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. If you have lived one day with cancer, you are a survivor.”

I have been involved to an extent in the Relay in past years. But now I am a survivor too and will be more involved.  I highly recommend a visit to the island . It is an education and a solace  not only to survivors but caretakers , family and friends. It is Hope and the Future is Now.

About Relay For Life of Second Life:

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society and has been active, and continually growing in Second Life for 10 years. In 2005, the first Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) was attended by a few hundred avatars and raised almost $5,000 US dollars for the American Cancer Society. As of July 2014 RFL of SL ranks number 17th out of 5000 teams worldwide in donations received. We have brought in over 2 million US dollars to help with the fight against cancer. This year our Relay weekend will be held on July 17th and 18th.

About the American Cancer Society:

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of nearly three million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society's efforts have contributed to a 22 percent decline in cancer death rates in the US during the past two decades, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress nearly 14.5 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year.  We're determined to finish the fight against cancer. As the nation’s  largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, we’re finding cures and ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more. For more information, to get help, or to join the fight, visit cancer.org or call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345.
