This Weekend at the Relay

The Relay for Life is underway! There are so many events we are being pulled in all directions. Saturday afternoon I donned a  1920‘s flapper dress to attend an elegant affair at the Chicago Fiume Jazz and Blues Club. The Tribute City Relayers sponsored the event where Henri Mckeenan entertained with music of Billie Holiday, Scott Joplin, Lional Hampton and other vintage jazz.

It was like a fashion show from the era. Everyone was wearing lovely outfits, jewels, boas. All proceeds from a raffle for gift cards was destined for the Relay. It was great fun! The team had reached the 300,000 L point when I left.

I made my way over to Relay dAlliez Celebrate where Rajun Cajun was entertaining a large group with tunes while Pyrie Catoria (Catalina Staheli) was busy taking pictures for The "Why I Relay" project. The line up of people waiting was so long, Leala Spire stepped in to make a list and organize the waiters.

You can find the pictures and comments at the center at American Cancer Society Island. Pyrie has been working on this for weeks, taking pictures and verbal expressions of why they are relaying. Busy day.

There were more events but I ran out of time. There will be more!

In July teams build campsites and walk a track that spans more than 40 virtual regions.

In 2013, Relay For Life of Second Life reached a milestone of having raised $2,000,000 since its fundraising beginning in 2004, for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life has become an international movement in RL and in SL. In 2013 participants from over 80 countries took part in Relay For Life of Second Life.

Each new Relay season the RFL of SL volunteers choose a new theme for the following season. The chosen 2014 theme is, A Journey of Promise. More Winter Fun

Winter has come to Second Life, and a number of regions are showing it, with both winter activities and Christmas-themed fun. Gemma Cleanslate has been dashing about the Grid, braving the cold to see where one can find them. Her latest story shows a few places where one can have so much fun, you don't mind a little snow and ice.

Places to Go on July 4rth

There's a lot to see and do on this July 4rth. Tribute City, built on the WW2 Tribute sim at (128, 51, 2518), has been holding Independence Day-themed events. They're the most publicized place, but by all means not the only one. Areo Pines Park also has it's own event today and for the rest of the week at Equus (16, 231, 22). Later tonight, the newly reopened Raised Tail Resort will be having it's own 4rth of July Beach party tonight at 6PM at Purrfection Estates (249, 61, 22).

If you want to celebrate by taking part in a WW2 themed combat game, head to the New Bastogne sim, join the group, read the rules, choose a side, get the gear, and after taking a moment to get the hang of the controls head out into the combat zone and run your flag up the poles to claim territory.

For places in Second Life with a patriotic look, one is SummerTown USA. But another was made not by an American but a Frenchman.  At Le Dome (36, 111, 21) is the Black Hills Forest, where you can see replicas of Mount Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty.

Happy Fourth of July.

Tribute City

Gemma Cleanslate recently took a look at a relatively new place in Second Life, Tribute City. Located in WW2 Tribute, the sim in the past was the location of the Flying Tigers and air combat. Today, the Tigers have moved on. But the sim has taken on new life in the form of fishing spots, four clubs for partying, newcomer freebie and help, and much more.

Happy New Year! 2013 Arrives in Second Life

By Bixyl Shuftan

On Monday January 31st, residents across Second Life rang out 2012 with parties and other events around the Grid. Large and small, residents found a number of places, and a few different ways.

For about eight hours, Tribute City held a New Year's Eve party from about 10AM to 6PM SL time. Four DJs, playing for two hours apiece, performed. And 1500 Lindens was given out every two hours for those judged Best in Theme. While there, one could pick up party favors, such as hats and horns, or get a glass of bubbly. For Europeans, this was one place to ring out a little early, but there was no shortage of Americans there to help celebrate a little early.

Jessii2009 Warrhol, the co-owner of Tribute city, celebrated along with the other partiers at the crowded club in WW2 Tribute. She's also known as one of the leaders of the Flying Tigers air combat group.

At 6PM SL time, Club Little Dove started it's own New Year's Eve Bash. Among the FCA Clubs, this was the one of which the event fell on it's operation hours. The zeppelin floats over the Colorado sim.

Cynthia Farshore was the DJ for the event. The self-proclaimed "Goat you got" did a six hour track of songs, some modern pop, some classic rock, and of course "Aud Lan Sang."

About a dozen and a half people were at the party at one time. A number of people had to leave early and a number arrived late. A total of a few dozen attended, as one by one, the New Year was rung in across the time zones. There was a prize of 2000 Lindens for the Best in Theme. Perri Prinz, writer and popular DJ, won.

It wasn't just clubs celebrating New Years. In this reader submitted picture, the Stalingrad combat sim launches fireworks in the air at the stroke of midnight, taking a break from the fighting.

Numerous other places celebrated New Year's Eve, from Mystery, to Club Gearz at Steelhead, to Madpea, to Luskwood, to the Odd Ball, and more. And the celebration's not over yet.

New Year's Day offers more fun and merryment. Club Zero Gravity has it's "Happy Rockin' New Year"party from 6 to 8PM, with DJ Perri playing classic rock hits in tribute to Dick Clark whom hosted "New Year's Rockin' Eve" until his passing on in 2012, with 500L on the board for Best in Theme. The event is at Purrfection Estates (229, 11, 3365)

And the party continues from 8 to 10 PM, or longer, at Castaway Cove with "Skylark's Rockin' New Year's Day" beach bash. Partiers are asked to wear Father Time or Baby New Year outfits, or one of the mild to wild outfits one might wear on the streets of Time Square. The party is at Kalmeere Paradise (18, 184, 21)

Some Events This New Year's Eve

Time was in Second Life, you had the choice of going to a Linden-organized ball-drop if you didn't know of any community/club events. The times for the former are gone, but there are still a number of local events.

Today at 8AM SL time, Tribute City starts its eight hour New Year's Eve Party.

-10am to 12pm slt - DJ Jami & Host Rinka
-12pm to 2pm slt - DJ Anakin & Host AJ
-2pm to 4pm slt - DJ Cath & Host Amber
-4pm to 6pm slt - DJ Jessi

1500 Lindens are on the contest board every 2 hours, come as you are. "Free New Year's party favors and a loaded raffle board."

WW2 Tribute (130, 127, 29)

For info & inquiries, contact Jessii2009 Warrhol, Co-Owner of Tribute City

At 12 Noon, the Queen of Hearts has it's New Year's Eve party. 250 Lindens are on the prize board for the best in theme. DJ Mantia will be playing the music from Noon to 2PM SL time.

Mystery (79, 89, 23)

And at 6PM when things are closing in Tribute City, the party's just getting started at Little Dove. The high-flying steampunk zeppelin club holds it's New Year's Eve bash, with DJ Cynthia Farshore taking the helm, "I will be spinning the tunes till at least midnight SLT. That’s right a whooping 6 hours all for you. For the contest it’s not the same old baby or party clothes or …no this time we honor Father. As in The Best of Father Time or Mother if you’re fem. Come as the best haggard bent over old geezer you can dream up. Think back over the year and picture what he will feel like. The prize will be set at L$500 but it may actually go higher."

Southern Colorado ( 110, 35, 105)
